Akai MPK49 Controller Overview

- The Akai MPK49 controller keyboard makes things easy -- as some would say, a little too easy. It's a keyboard controller with 49 keys that won't break when you touch them like other types of keyboard keys, 12 pads and enough options to where you could probably record something that sounds passable as music while you're off in the Caymans in the middle of some kind of money coma.
Bill Holland demonstrates.

buying one of these tomorrow in 2024! Lets gooooo
Hope they treating you well
no problem! I'm glad it helped. I personally really like this one, because I was able to plug it in and it immediately synced with my software. If you find the axiom videos I did, I actually had to reset everything by hand in ableton which was a little bit of a pain. The construction is quite good as well.
I like your desk setup. It's very clean.
Thx for the brilliant review. Cheers!
ableton is what I was using in the video. did you use the AKAI install disc that came with the unit? There are templates built into the controller (scroll through the menu) ranging from cubase to sonar to logic. There is an ableton preset.
finally, someone who uses the mpk49 in a way that's similar to mine.
Well, I've chosen M-Audio and absolutely satisfied. It doesn't have some features AKAI has, but it is so comfortable and user friendly, that totally worth money. I love it, hope you too :)
@SeanDaddyTV yes. Theres even a button for it on the keyboard.
But modding it is a good idea too.
@MrKeto9000 well you can hook up speakers to your computer thru the headphone jack. of if u want to hook up an amp you can buy a converter (you can find at radio shack) that will allow you to take the jack that your amp is using and change it to the common 3.5 size jack that your computer will have... if you have anymore questions, just ask!
all positive? no negative comments bro? it cant be true, just bought a49 almost bought the 61 version, hope i wont regret it when i see all the functions, i asked the seller for plug and play midi keyboards, and this is one of the ones he said, hope i wont regret it,switched from'just' a ESI keyboard to akai , hope this wont spend my time
dude thanks for answering all the questions!
i'm going to buy a midi controller for my bday gift and the mpk49 is on the top of my list...i hope it's as easy to use as you say
@MrKeto9000 this machine is just a controler... there is no internal sound... this is more for producing. this has to be hooked up to your computer and the sound is made in a program such as reason or FL studio. i hope that helps!
I'm still stuck between investing in this controller or the cheaper m-audio one. Thanks for the vid post thought, it really helped.
That's sick man
@Republican1980, ok, I bought a midi cable and I connected the midi out of the mpk49 to the midi in of my sound card. Once you open your software, select the mpk49 as your midi device, than insert a softsynthe in your software. I use sonar 7 PE, the MPK generate a sound only after I insert a soft synthe. I hope this will help.
@DECIFERTHIS09 thats how electronic music was born- most of the early seventies stuff was arppegiators and random notes_ala tangerine dream schulz floyd etc- i love working off of random arps- almost like freeform jamming and coming up with parts i may have never thought of!
Good pick. I giving back my 2013 m audio axiom air 49 and going back to the MPK 49. Nicer controls
nice demo bro
awesome video, man.
yeah and it is more solid, great vid
@JesseScooterz the software is ableton live 8. great software. is a bit different from others but once you get the hang of it its great
Just ordered my mpk49 online:) Cant wait for it to come so I can stop using my mpk mini.
Two questions. Does the key board come with a USB cable you can directly plug into the computer and does the key board, if bought new, come with Ableton Live Light? If someone could asnwer these i would be more than greatful. Thank you.
Arpeggiators have been around since at least the 80s, which is what that function is.
I got the akai max 49 instead. Took a little time to come in..... but worth the wait.
@MrKeto9000 im not too sure exactly what u have or if it will work but the sounds are going to be emitted from your computer so if u plug in a jack in the headphone slot then your basicly hooking up speakers to your computer... this is not efected when the AKAI is hooked up because the AKAI goes in the USB port.
HOW TO SET UP MPK 49 in FL Studio
great video! how did you set up to have drums on pads and piano on keys at same time?
the max's do look real sexy, but I got a super awesome deal, it was only used once and i payed like $250. But yea it finally came after like 2 weeks and i love it:)
Controllers seem like a real drag. Every time you want to play keyboards you gotta set up the laptop too. Persuade me that I am wrong. Guess thats why I bougtht the Korg tactile. Not completely satisfied but there are some decent sounds.
great video, can you tell me how you assigned the parameters to the knobs?
I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this one..
is it possible...in Abelton to..
Set up a click track that will only be sent to headphones(so my drummer can play along live while the rest of the track is sent to the PA system)
And with the MPK49 can I...
Set up samples in Abelton so ONLY the PADS will trigger them.
THEN
Rewire reason into Abelton and assign ONLY the KEYBOARD function to the Synths ( I have set up my I/O settings already..no need to explain how to rewire)
@ABUIK you can get it out of either i recomend external for quality
can this be used as a standalone keyboard or does it need a music processor ?
I should've gone with an Axiom 49. The only feature I really like about the mpk is the arpeggiator.
@nasschannel akai does work with ableton. ableton is the software he is using but they do their buisness seperatly
Im Thinking About Gettinng The Whole Kit From Guitar Center.. What Program Can I Use This With, For Recording And Such..
thank you
can you use these on pcs? and also do you have to have it hooked up to a computer to actually play it? sorry if these are dumb questions, i've just always rapped and wanted top try my hand at production. nice video man!
what do you run your akai thru for sound, and do you use windows xp?
You are old.
@Shanez84 because its akai.
@djtlos318 Thanks 4 ur answer, but I was able to figure out how get the sound. Thanks.
I have the mpk25. as far as features go its awesome.... but the keys are really stiff in my opinion, and yes, as many before me have already said, the pads are horrible. Kind of a let down since those are kind of the 2 main points of the controller.
the thing i hate about the mpk, is that the pads, you have to slam down, but i fixed them with a little bit of electrical tape, let me know if anyof you neeed some help doing it
@Tim7421 mpk gives more options plus the mpc
yes there is a mapping
I just acquired my mpk49, and I'm using it with the sonar preset. But I'm not getting any sound from the keyboard, can u help me out set it up"
Hi, thanks for your video! Could you please tell me if it is possible to get a dual sound on this? ie to play piano and strings simultaneously? and if so, how do I get that?
Cheers.
+ablythe16 You can layer sounds by making two tracks each loaded with an instance of a synth. Just configure the two tracks to respond to the keyboard midi input and you just layered your two (or more if you like) sounds. The only limit is your computer's CPU.
Ok so Im looking to do hom recording. and Im looking to get a midi keyboard. would you suggest the the basic m audio keystation. or this or m audio axiom 49. to do mixing or something. is this more of a live instrument. or is it good to do home recording. like could I record a part say using cutoff to make a drop good for this or just better to do it on the computer?
@MrKeto9000 alright no problem! and i suggest buying in person because if for any reason the speakers dont work it will be easy to return but its all up to you... good luck and i hope u find success with your band!
Old video but how do I get Abalton light as My used keyboard don't have it. Also can I just use usb instead of midi leads?
those sounds aren't in the actual controller are they? or are they just a sounds off s software like garageband or reason etc?
hi im gonna buy a midi keyboard this days..im beetwen mpk 49>>m audio axiom 49 >>or novation impulse 49 ???any suggestions??i heard that mpk is good but have prob with pads!!
looks like you had some trouble with the mpc pads. have u done or heard of modding them? seems like they are barely usable right now...
If I decide to use it without a computer sometime, does it have built in speakers so I can plug it into the wall and play that way? Or do speakers hook up to it and then plug it into a wall? Or is it STRICTLY for the computer?
Thanks to one and all!
hello,
i just got a mpk49. what kind of set up do i need if i already have a computer, but no speakers or a interface box yet.. i just want to sample and make some beats. thanks
@gearwire so did you mean the axiom has no instant controller mapping?
@sedative3145 are they? I only want to us them to launch clips in ableton - u think it will be alright?
can u make a video on how to sync the on deck arp and note repeat????
I don't like how you have to hit the mpc really hard... is there a chance you can post a video of the full range of sensitivity?
do you use external speakers or the laptop speakers for the sound to come through?
how can i make "tap tempo" blink again? i made something that made it stop blinking but now i want to make it blink again anyone can help me?
@sedative3145 They are not so bad if you turn of the velocity on em.
anyone know******one question im just looking for a controller for my nova rack synth- can i just use this like a traditional midi keyboard controller via standard midi- or is this strictly a usb type software controller- i like the arp option and build of these- i have an old roland a-30 controller for my other synths !
How can u add voicing to keyboard of mpk49?
I ordered this today, but do i need a cable or something to plug it into fl studio? Where can i buy one?
How do i use the faders and drum machine with fl studio
and the mpk49!!!!
Arpeggiators
@astrovan14 yes. looks like ableton.
@sedative3145 but cant u just change the sensativity to make them better?
just grabbed one today, it came with nothing but the controller and it won't even turn on... I'm royally pissed
does anybody know whether the akai has a direct link or similar feature like the axiom 49 or if you have to map out the entire keyboard by yourself?
Hi brother i seriously need your help i have the same MPK49 same as the one you are using suddenly the light wound turn on i try everything and i have no damn idea what has happen so decided to link you up if you have any idea as to what might happen. Thanks
Akai MPK49 or the MPK25. for the money considering the 49 is 100-150 dollars more. is it worth it??
how is this plugged in? just via usb or something? and how much is the cords roughly?
ah man im so confused on what to get :(
HELP, when i record, on the piano, i play somthing, and the velocity/volume is low on some, how can i make them all sound normal?
hey gearwire guy where did u get your double column 19" rack mount on your desk??? custom made? or purchased?
word man
how do u fix it to be 16 beats my melody is off i bought the mpk49 2 days ago im trna fix it
i know there are more pads on this but my costs limit is £250 so is it best getting a novation impulse 49 or akai mpk 49? there are more pads on this but are the impulse pads better quality and are these back lit? thanks anyone who reads this :3
I'm trying to decide as well...
@rockhills wtf youre talking about. got my MPK49 for about 1½ years now. NO ONE keys broke, and i have busted it a lot!
@EZASOMO hey i was having the same problem not getting any sound. How did you set up you mpk49?
MPK49+Cakewalk please? if i may request :)
I've never understood Midi drum pads. Especially if you're just gonna quantize anyway. Just draw them in the piano roll with your mouse. It takes 5 seconds.
What gear is that RED in your right side? Thanks.
go with this one, I have the axiom 49 and this one looks much better
are the faders at the top right motorized?
Would this be compatible with reason essentials?
they're built into the keyboard
Any other MIDI keyboard controllers that are the same price, maybe a bit cheaper, that are better than this one?
Is this compatible with Ableton Live 9 or Ignite?
Can anybody say me whats better an MPC for making beats ore the MPK 49?
i can't get record play to work any help?
Can this be used in pro tools? plz help
how to play keys and pads same time?
Sooo, people, Akai MPK49 or M-Audio Axiom 49 mkII ?
so how does this compare to a mpc?
