Hey this is a really good video. Phenomenal editing , good clear information without any time wasted. Also nice variety, I have a farm and there’s a lot of trees growing along the side that look just like this.
Thanks for this video! Last fall I planted several of my smaller trees into the ground hoping to grow bigger trunks. I'll reference this video as my trees grow in the garden!. Cheers!
Another great timely video, just a few days ago I ground planted about 15 of my different seedlings to out for a couple years, thank you for this video.
Another superb video Jelle with loads of great ideas to take me forwards - my flower garden will be slowly transformed into a miniture woodland :) And yes please to any cuttings going begging, you can never have too many trees 🤔
Wonderful! Please do make sure you discuss the flowerbed transformation with other people that might use the garden! A tree is not worth a relationship!
All going pretty well thanks. Out of the 30 beech trees around 5 didn't make it, but considering they were dug up and left out on the side in a pile for a few days before I got them, I'm happy with that. All the rest are doing well apart from one hawthorn which is also brown bread!
Hey Jelle! Thanks for sharing, i really need to try this. On my Uncles farm there should be plenty of space. I've seen this only at Herons so far. Keep it up! Cheers 💚
Thank you so much. What specifically makes this one different? I would love to make this channel in one that is different, so it helps me to know how you see this!
It’s the only one I’ve seen that explains the process is slow in making a bonsai trees. And that you explain how to plant them in The ground with a piece of slate or a rock beneath the roots. I’ll be absolutely trying this At this point I have attempted making my own bonsai using other methods. Only one has been successful but I am going to keep trying with your methods. Thank you.
You covered it perfectly. i wish I had been as methodical with all of my 'field grown' stuff. I used the slate and I kept cutting back but what I didnt do is check the roots regularly. Some of them are a real nightmare now!
If you tried to dig anything when you were in Melbourne, you will understand my envy at your ease of digging! My clay is so hard, than even in winter it requires a strong boot on the spade to get even half depth in the ground. Nevertheless, ground growing works for trunks, and I am looking forward to lifting a few maples to check their progress . . .
@@rebeccahunter725 Not sure what you have in your area but I love razorback shovels and couldn’t garden without them. Damn that is a tough shovel for clay.
Well.. I planted them. Now it is a matter of waiting to see whether they root! Sometimes they do, and sometimes.. They don't! This is mainly lazy planting from my side :)
Great video Jelle. I think I will do this with a few of my smaller trees this year and see how well they choose to take off. I like that tile underneath. Does it make a difference if it is a rough surface like a cinder block over something smooth?
I am very curious about the air layer that you left on over winter. Did it work? Did the substrate in the air layer pot freeze and do damage? I tried to air-layer a Japanese maple (outdoor tree) in the Toronto area and thought that the harsh winter would kill the branch. What is your climate/lowest winter temperature?
hey jelle....nice video again. I have some bonsai trees that I would like to put in the ground in my garden...when would be the best time to do this? planning to plant 2 acers and 2 ulmusses to fatten the trunk
When you plant them, make sure you work the roots, spreading them out. This sort of work is best done in early spring as trees are starting to wake up (Regular repot time). I also do this in late summer after the main heat is gone, hoping winter is more than a month away..
Konnte mann machen. Ich glaube jetzt wird es aber zu spat zum erwarten das neue Wurzeln kommen bist winter, also konntest du auch bis ende februar, nach die grosste frostzeit so etwas machen.
Hello Jelle, thank you for that great video with lots of information. I recently bought some young bonsai being 2-3years old and planted them in the ground. Can i leave them there during winter or should i dig them up and put them somewhere frost protected? Best regards from Germany
Hi Jelle, do you know Bonsai Q channel from Japan? They have Areal more drastic method for Maples. I made some experience with the same method you are using. Thanks for this video
Leatherback!!! Do you ever put them in some kind of container to pull up easier? I've seen that method but it doesn't seem like you do! Just curious. Do you ever do evergreens or conifers in the ground like this or mostly deciduous?
Na, a good spade does the work of pulling up for me. I have a bunch of junipers in the ground, however with wiring them during development sometimes I find pots easier.
Hi Jelle! Thanks for another cool video, I was wondering - I have bought a Japanese Red Maple seedling here in the UK without realizing that it needs its winter dormancy period (it did go through it this time though, also its been repotted in a bonsai training pot that has a substrate similar to the one you are making), I have it growing under a grow light right now and it seems to be thriving (it was a twig but now it's pushing its first leaves which are already redish in color). Do you have any advice for when the time comes, do I just take the tree out for a couple of hours (to acclimatize) then leave it fully out for the winter to get its dormancy period? or can it stay inside but in a cool (10 degrees Celsius) place? I should have had a look before purchasing it. I am now well aware that some trees need the "outside" but it's too late and I'd still love to take good care of it! (I also don't have much of a space outside cuz of the way standard UK flats are haha!)
Can't wait to see what you mean by "fairy tale" bonsai: this Japanese maple branch I'm playing with has a similar dead patch by the root crown and I've been debating what to do with it when I cut the branch back to size.
Hello Jelle I just subscribed to your channel, I saw a few of your videos very nice work I must say sir. So how can I get one of your maple bonsai I saw on one of your videos with your noise neighbor in the background lol. Well I must go for now hope to hear from you soon. Your friend Juan
Hi Juan, welcome to the channel! To be honest, I do not have a shop. Every once in a while I put a tree on the european bonsai auctions site. But that is about it. Not sure, is that what you mean?

Interesting video, makes me think about my garden space. One question, does zelkova survive our winters?
Surprised that your cuttings take by planting directly into the garden with no rooting hormone. Impressive.
Well.. I planted them. Now it is a matter of waiting to see whether they root! Sometimes they do, and sometimes.. They don't! This is mainly lazy planting from my side :)
Damn i really need a garden for this, but also because my balcony is full of trees
Well.. You can always go house shopping for your trees
Nice no nonsens information as always. If you do a give away of any Zelkova cuttings, I would be happy to get one.
Hm.. Should check what I still have sitting with roots. I might have some left.
Great video Jelle. I think I will do this with a few of my smaller trees this year and see how well they choose to take off. I like that tile underneath. Does it make a difference if it is a rough surface like a cinder block over something smooth?
I do not think it makes a difference, except that possibly roots grow partially into the cinderblock making it hard to get the plant off.
