Koala Drinking Water On A Hot Day

  • This young koala moved on down from a tree on a hot day while I was watering the front garden. I knew he needed water. This interaction is not uncommon here in Summer. Usually koalas get enough hydration from eating Eucalyptus leaves, but during our harsh Summers with 40C+ days we get koalas approaching humans and wandering our yards for water. They will seek out sprinklers, ponds or anything with running water. We keep several shallow water trays out for wildlife during Summer. The least we can do for building amongst their homes. This little koala was very friendly and had the softest fur!

Thank you so much for this and for letting us hear the natural sounds without irritating music. So neat to hear the birds in the background as this little critter learns to drink. A big thumbs up.

is this the woman who was in the 'curious koala that came in her home' for a bit?.?. this woman has a calming voice that I think the koala found quite lovely, it was how she was with him too "you belong outside" but when she got water n dipped her hand in n allowed the koala to lick the water off I couldn't help but smile n at the end when they both ready she said "let's find you a tree" much respect to her n the koalas..... much love n prayers to all effected in australia!

Such a sweet baby! They're even cute when they sneeze! You are so kind to give them something to drink. It must be particularly bad this year, with the fires. I feel so bad for them. I'm so angry at the kids who intentionally started the fires! They do that here in America, too. Selfish brats! Don't care who they hurt.

Koalas don’t usually seek out human contact . Most Australians have never seen a koala except at the zoo.
Koalas in the wild don’t usually drink water or allow humans close to them.
Yet they are intelligent enough to know humans can help them..
The fires have destroyed their trees and hundreds of koalas have perished.
It is not known if there are enough still alive to sustain the species.

Most Australians live in big cities . However someone live near Adelaide hills, riding bike along the road will see many cuties. They have been losing their trees due to over development of construction projects. Only Kangaroo Island of SA host the 100% decease free Koalas imported from French Island of Victoria State.
Although Australia is home for Koalas, it is also killing BBQ Oven for them in Summer .There are conservation programs in oversea in case there is extinction of Koalas here. Such as UK and China. China is more successful in breeding due to warmer climate and Pandas breeding experience.
Aussie Environment Minster is reviewing about listing Koalas as endangered species in some parts of nation. VIC and SA treat Koalas as pests and not protected so far.

I wouldn't be surprised if a thirsty koala couldn't be quickly taught to hold a suitable sized cup and drink from it. They certainly are not skilled at drinking by lapping.

      You are right.
Hundreds of koalas have perished during the wildfires
Any who survived, cannot return to their trees. They will be taken to an area not burnt out.
