    Bruh, everyone think the Spitfire is the only true hero of Battle of Britain. The Hawker Hurricane was used more in the battle and produced in large numbers. Yes, it's understandable to recognise the Spitfire more with its iconic design and multiple models of the plane but remember there were plenty more hero's in the fight for British air space.

In the 8 miles surrounding my house there are 3 former RAF fighter stations; RAF Westhampnett, RAF Tangmere and RAF Ford. I would love to have the chance to see the Battle of Britain unfold from the ringside seats the people that lived in my house would've had

    • @jamiegrover3181
      @jamiegrover3181 6 років тому +5

      You wouldn't have liked it at all. The uncertainty of death for you or your family would have been terrifying. Your comment of having 'Ringside' seats gives a rather flippant disregard for the flying men that lost their lives on a daily basis as they were trapped in their burning aircraft, don't you think. This was not entertainment such as seen at a boxing match. This was survival.

      lukusism hello, not sure if you return to old posts but I may be able to help. Both my grandfather and his brother were spitfire pilots in the war. The tales of survival odds were very true. My grandmother was well aware of the days when quoted odds of 50/50 survival rates were doing the rounds. One day having shot one of the bastards down and to relieve my grandmothers nerves, my grandfather did a victory roll over their house at tree top height to let her know he was safe and well. My dad who was 3 at the time, his eyes still sparkle at the memory. The merlin engine literally made the lawn shake. The story has an unhappy ending. A jobsworth living next door reported my grandfathers plane to the ministry and he ended up in a world of trouble for his roll. Also the odds proved true; his brother was killed in his plane.

    A massive salute to the overwhelmingly BRITISH pilots who fought for their homeland. That often gets forgotten in the incessant need to include others: That this was a British victory by Brits for Brits.
    The bravery and contributions of the minority non-Brits should NEVER take precedence over that.

    I went from the "Where Eagles Dare" theme to here, and then hopped in the Hawker Hurricane, er, Jaguar XK8, and went to blockbuster to rent them, and they don't have either. How sad is that, I remember 5 years ago renting this movie from Blockbuster.

    There are still two flying and one in my country that did, but when the museum that it's in bought it they filled in three of it's engine's and left it too rot on display (without the guys who restored it knowing). It'll cost more to restore now then twenty years of maintenance (fuel and insurance is another matter).

    Polakin Holland: Don't get offended; the revision isn't saying the squaddies aren't telling the truth, it's just that when you have a BIG Furball, a pilot can't watch his target for TOO long or else he'll end up with a bandit on his OWN tail. It's only natural when you take a squirt & then break away at 500KPH & then you look back & see a split second glimpse of a plane falling with smoke trailing, you're gonna think you killed that plane.

    @QuaVzBuMzGB Well, according to the limited resources I can access here (i.e. the net), the engine in the Bell P-59 (the first US jet fighter) came from the Power Jets W.1 which came from the Gloster E.28/39 and was built under contract in the US. The engine in the Lockheed P-80, the first operationally used jet fighter in the USAAF came from plans developed from a British de Havilland H-1 B turbojet.
    But I don't remember jet engines being in the discussion... :-)

    One of the most poignant scenes in the movie is when Canfield's black lab is looking into the sky for him to come back but he never does.

    Like 'Tora, Tora, Tora' , another WW2 Docu-drama made in 1970---no frills, no romances just the lead up to the attack on Pearl Harbor as told by both sides...Don't get me wrong I have BoB along with Longest Day, Bridge too Far, Dam Busters, Cruel Sea, Zulu & 'TTT' as well...LOVE them all---I wish the British Film industry STILL made movies like that!
