My favorite version of this song... the original. Schwarz' slowed-down remake, with deeply meaningful lyrics, is lovely and touching; but it's this original version that brings a hopeful smile to my heart. Awesome song!
A fitting song for this time of year, remembering about grateful. It is indeed a beautiful song that makes reminds me that even in despair we are loved by God.
the composer Stephen Schwartz performed this song on his piano after 911 in October 2001 at a performance at Ohlone College. He likened it to a rising from the ashes from ground zero. It was moving in 2010 as it was in 1973 and is now. It is very hopeful song.
This is my favorite song from the movie. I fell in love with the score from this "idiotic absurdity." I don't believe a cynic could appreciate the beauty of this celebratory production!
My favorite song from the movie! Uplifting with beautiful harmonies. Don't know how they managed to get sections of New York to shut down for some of the scenes!
In the new Broadway revival, this is done as a mournful solo ballad by Jesus (Hunter Parrish). Lovely and sad. I really love this sweet version from the movie. Great scene.
Jeffrey Fairfield You couldn't be more right! I love this movie. I remember when it came out at the theater I was working in a cinema and we had droves of people. Back then was the Jesus freak revolution. I wonder how many Jesus freaks remained Jesus freaks?
You too? I just ordered this score...I can play it on my flute. I love Victor. Seems this song has a lot of different versions. I like this one and these lyrics the best..not that you asked. LOL
tarbandu - thanks for posting! This was released as a Promo 45 single after just before "Day By Day". I have BC playing on my radio station, so come listen!
"Come sing me sweet rejoicing/Come sing me love We're not afraid of voicing/All the things we're dreaming of Oh, high and low/and everywhere we go Chorus: We can build/A beautiful city Yes we can/Yes we can We can build/A beautiful city Call it out/And call it the city of man"
We don't need alabaster/We don't need chrome We've got our special plaster/Take my hand, I'll take you home! We see nations rise/In each others' eyes (Chorus)
This is the ONLY VHS tape I ever purchased and is now well worn having loaned it to every high school in the area so they could see the original. They saw the costumes and dress of the day.The only thing they changed is the word Keds to Nikie in "I read feet"
I heard the new recording of this first. It's shocking to hear it so upbeat in contrast! I love this version, but I find the slower, more melancholy version just painfully beautiful.
1972 version it is so upbeat when Stephen did the new version it did not have the same feel to it the new version was not bad I just like 72 version better I love Godspell and mostly all the rock musical superstar, Tommy the wall, song remain the same
@CaletheMrActor i was part of a Godspell performance here in arizona, and this song is actually sung twice. once at this tempo and feeling towards the middle, and again at that point you're talking about as a reprise. maybe your director decided to opt out from the first?
@susparkles somebody asked me who played Jesus in Godspell. They said he became a famous actor way after Godspell. Now i can tell him. Thanks for the info.
My lil nigga charcoal battaglia was this for Halloween one year n did the play n all that...not usually my cup of tea...but he made it slap #salute charcoal battaglia
I'm gonna be in a Godspell performance, but this song is placed in between Light of the World and Finale. It's also more sad and slow. The lyrics are also a little different.
Be careful what you type, this is Sacred Music to some people. It is far from being cheesy. We are talking 1973 and this is from a movie. The quality is 1973 quality and it is not much different than the rest of the movies made then.
Cub lion says, "anytime I roar everyone just laughs and says how cute!" "Maybe that might change if you practice your roar some more," replied Father Lion. "Try it one more time for me." "Yikes!" yelled Father Lion as he scrambled to get away.
Well this song was not apart of the original musical/script. IT was added once they decided to do the movie...and is very good song.!Chessy for todays standards, but but an uplifting song overall.
I was wondering about that. I have the original Broadway soundtrack, and had never heard this song before. I have never seen the movie. Apparently, I need to change that. I am just discovering these videos online. I absolutely love the music from "Godspell."
This one holds its own because it is the original. Which gave rise to the new. Standing on the shoulders of giants. Should consider looking to the past more often.
Victor Garber,if you're out there.I love you as an actor.you are wonderful, back then, now and always.you've never been less than great.
God is Great

Such an underrated stage-to-screen adaptation!
+Jeffrey Fairfield
it is very nice, though the musical composer apparently didn't like it much.

An extremely pretty song.
What an inspiration!
For me this song represents the end of the adventure leading into what lies ahead.
+Owen Scheid thats what it is. I think its also no matter what happens God's love will prevail
No doubtts about it!!!
LOVE IT!

beautiful song
Poignant - especially now
Thanks - and your words truly reflect the poignancy and passion we need today.
@cecilia0007
That is the brilliance -- the slow one is so poignant. But this one is so uplifting! The original Boradway version even more so.
Melbourne....let's keep our city beautiful!!!

Lighten up Francis, I like Godspell music...
fast fretting Lol I'm atheist and I still enjoy this movie.
I do not believe in atheist's.
fast fretting Alright and that's good for you.
Sacred how?
This song sounds like something from the Partridge Family. I like it though.
This song always sound me like Abba :)

They should be sharing a soft drink !
In light of all of the immigration morass and unspeakable separation of children from parents, this song helps me and makes me hopeful.
Acredito plenamente, que a Espera irá prosperar.
a mis amigos!!
🕊
Audio has to be cleaned up, wee bit low
Much, much better than the "new" version Schwartz wrote after rioters destroyed Los Angeles in 1992.
Well this song was not apart of the original musical/script. IT was added once they decided to do the movie...and is very good song.!Chessy for todays standards, but but an uplifting song overall.

Help, I can't get this cheesy song out of my head!
Ouch ...well there goes my smile :(
Thanks and I was actually admitting that I like these tunes... perhaps "cheesy" was the wrong term.
Barek Halfhand it’s not “cheesy.”
Please upload the "Gethsemane" parable from the movie "Godspell".

Cute
Great song but still I prefer Jesus Christ Superstar, when it comes to 70's film versions of musicals based on Christianity.
P
New version of this song is so much better...
Actually, the original version stands on it's own. As it has for 45 years.
They're both lovely.
This one holds its own because it is the original. Which gave rise to the new. Standing on the shoulders of giants. Should consider looking to the past more often.
They have Jesus dressed up like a clown what's up with that??
I love this original version of the song. The way they've bastardized it for xian propaganda is lame.
***** Rubbish! The Hunter Parrish version destroys this hokey version. "xian propaganda". LOL!
I'll need a few units of testosterone administered by drip IV after watching this.
Go spend a few hours in a Northern Tool and Equipment outlet. It works for me.
If it affecteed you that much that you need it, it may be too late for you.
