What Is The Difference Between A GMRS Radio And A Ham Radio? What IS A GMRS Radio Per The FCC?

- In this video I explain what it means to be a GMRS radio, and what some of the differences are between a ham radio and a GMRS radio or a Business/LMR type radio and a GMRS radio. Specifically how the FCC defines a GMRS radio and what the radio must do to be FCC Part 95 certified as a GMRS radio.

“Irregardless” people in glass houses should not throw stones “idiot”
Where do you buy your panties?
You know he does that on purpose, right? Perhaps you’re a little slow on the uptake
I just found your channel not too long ago, and pretty much have watched most of your videos. I'm very amused by your sarcasm and humor trying to deal with the flood of "experts" who's heads explode because of...words. Always amusing when you shut them down. I did buy a UV 5R and bigger battery, bigger antenna, etc, and got it set up with CHIRP due to your videos. Just wanted to take a moment to say "Thank you" for all your efforts. There are people out here who actually appreciate your efforts Sir. Keep up the good work.
Yes Sir, he has tons of old relevant stuff that I go back and watch. In Hollywood he would do great voice overs. Cheers
Randy is definitely one of the good ones!
The difference between GMRS and HAM radio is like the difference between normal and sexy.
Thank you for posting this I bought a UV 5R and I’ve gone through a very similar experience in a similar timeframe
For these two years that I've been actively involved in GMRS radio world,I've listened and watched a lot of videos, but I've stayed consistent on your videos because you speak clearly and loudly so I understand everything and I've learned a lot of things thanks to you, thank you.👍👍👍
My wife hates me watching your channel. Every time I watch it , a new radio shows up.. lol I loved the radio classes I took in the army in 81 to 86 so yeah now I'm the radio man in my neighborhood. Lol. Great videos brother.
HOOOAH! #AATW
🤣🤣🤣
As a new ham operator, I am thankful to have stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for what you do.
why are you here!? you are *not* welcome HERE!!
i am also a Amateur. may the waves be with you.
I have not been a ham licensed user of ham and GMRS radios for 57 years of my life of 57 years. This makes perfect sense to me. 57 years makes me an expert.
Far out yes l believe so😂😂😂
From a sad ham: Ham operators are much wiser and less constipated than GMRS operators. Love your videos!
People that pay for any kind of license for anything is a schmuck. Live in a shack on land you don't own or pay taxes on defended by arms of your own creation. Who'se gonna make me get a license? God? I don't even know what kind of radio frequencies I use, I just punch numbers in my UV-5R and start talking on whatever frequencies get people to talk back. CB, FM, AM, GM2D2, all the same shit to me tbh.
I just love to hear from this guy. He's transmits on my wavelength and his scrambler is crystal clear to me.
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
5 mygigglehurtz split? I have no idea how you say that with a straight face but I love it.
And yes I am a ham, no I'm not a sad ham and no I don't drone on about every medical ailment from encyclopedia Britannia. We exist. We even talk about this channel and how much we appreciate it
Just wanted to say thanks. This here student is learning alot. I think I"ll stay in this school for a bit.
Aahhhh irregardless. One of my two most favourite words to use around “intelligent” people.
The other word, suposubly.
Love this channel!
confukulation is on my list.... as well as gigglehurtz....
I’ve been a ham radio operator since 2010. Lately I have been enjoying gmrs a lot more than ham. I have two uv5r radios and both have the Roger beep enabled.
"Randy my favorite Hobo's condescending UA-cam videos are absolute comedy gold! Some people can't handle his humor, but for those of us who appreciate his sarcasm and wit, it's pure hilarity. Plus, his videos make me drink shot after shot of liquor. He is his own drug in his very own right. Cheers to Randy, the Hobo King of UA-cam!" You never... EVER... waste my time-- 5 Stars Bravo!
To "some people:" First off, let's talk about Randy's unique style. He's got this uncanny ability to make even the most mundane topics sound like Shakespearean dramas. I mean, who else can turn a video about boring electromagnetic sciences into a gripping tale of domestic heroism? Randy does it with a flourish and an eye roll that would make even the snootiest of Shakespearean actors jealous.
BUT why do "some people" get all upset about Randy's videos? Well, folks, it's simple: Randy's humor is an acquired taste, mmmm, nom nom, like a VERY fine wine or a stinky cheese. Some people just can't handle the level of sarcasm and wit our masculine Randy brings to the table. Those people take themselves a tad too seriously and can't begin to appreciate Randy's TRUE GENIUS. THESE PEOPLE are the ones who fold their socks with military precision and shudder at even the thought of a laundry rebellion!
Now, let's address the real issue here: THE SHOTS OF LIQUOR. Randy, my friend, you owe me a liver transplant! Your videos are so funny that I've turned into a human shot glass dispenser. Every time you drop one of your condescending bombs, I find myself reaching for the nearest bottle, pouring a shot, and toasting to your hilarity. It's like a drinking game, but instead of sipping, I'm chugging because your humor is so darn infectious!
In conclusion, Randy my dearest Hobo, you are a comedic wizard in the world of UA-cam. Your condescending charm, the way you effortlessly skewer the everyday mundane, and the uproarious laughter you bring into my life are truly priceless. Hats off to you.
To all the haters out there, maybe it's time to lighten up and JOIN the PARTY!! - just remember to bring your own liquor because Randy's videos will have you drinking shots like there's no tomorrow!
Cheers to Randy, the supreme Hobo King of UA-cam! Keep the condescension coming, my friend, and I'll keep the liquor cabinet stocked.
Love ya bud! Number #1 Best Fan for you. Nate up in Canada.
P.S. Save us from Trudeau.
Thank you El-Rando, for the clear and concise un-confunkulation of Ham and GMRS radios. WRMB632
Thanks for the warning at the beginning of the video, that made me stay to look for those references!
I am just learning about all this and wish i started sooner.
"irregardless" that's gonna trigger "some people" 😅😅
You're my favorite UA-camr 😊
Don’t be upset, but I’m his favorite viewer. He’s told Me multiple times!
He says it in code in each video
Is it normal to become slightly aroused watching these videos?
@@Taco_Syndicatehe says it to everyone but he only means it when I watch.
...hate to disappoint all of you, cause Randy will soon say it in Spanish..."porque yo...sí, YO soy su espectador favorito" 🎉😂
I was studying to get my technician/general, but after listening to you on HRCC and what I think I want out of a radio... I just went ahead and spread my bhole and forked over the $35 instead. Now to find a decent radio for in the car.
I've spent a grand total of 30 minutes tops since getting my license in 1999. But I still keep it active for emergency communication if it ever comes up. And as someone who is learning disabled & legally blind, I still see it as an achievement.
Randy, Thank you for the great video. You have taught me the differences between Ham and GMRS so well that I am now hoping that you could post a video explaining the differences between the 898,298 genders we can now claim to be. Again, thank you.
I banged whatever gender your mom was last night
I saw a spectrum of the Baofeng UV-17. I was shocked at how bad it *isn't*. The guy showing it was a sad ham and was complaining about it, but the first harmonic was 24 dB below the carrier and the 2nd harmonic was 40 dB down. That's pretty darned impressive for a cheap COTS transmitter with no filters.
-Professional EMI technician/ Randy's favorite viewer
I have a UV-17L Pro and put away my other boofwangs. It's the only one I use now.
I played a harmonica once
Just ordered 2 of those “FCC certified Sad HAM devices”. Great Black Friday deals through your hyperlink in the description in the review video you posted.
I'm a happy HAM operator. Your videos are awesome! I also have a GMRS license. All the spectrums covered. Great info.
Finally a bright guy who understands what a beginner is and a speaks in plain English
I don’t know the difference but I use both without a license and there’s nothing sad hams can do about it :-)
Don't be so sure there Hoss. The hams will go on the hunt for a fox(you), and they will have plenty to say about it.
Look up Fox Hunting
You gonna get tarred and feathered for breakin them radio rules! Big government and all its laws is evil and terrible and no good at all. Except the radio laws. Thou will rot forever for breaking even one radio law and there are 50 government hating hams ready to insist you broke the one law they like.
@@RKingis who cares, except the sad hams and #2 it was called rabbit hunting back in the day when cb's were all the rage. clubs used to have rabbit hunts all the time. it was pretty fun
.
I love this guy! Totally OG.
Good video Randy @NotaRubicon Productions
Okay, I came for the info, but spit Mt. Dew all over when you pointed with the broken pencil. 😂
Thanks for increasing the number of hams who want to get out farther on their transceivers and have more success contacting others in the event of an earthquake or hurricane that might make repeaters useless! So many have graduated from GMRS to HAM bands. Out frequencies propagate much farther.
Love your channel. I have learned alot about Gmrs radios and how to use them. Also I have watched most of your videos. They are very informative. Thanks Randy. WRYJ637
Mygigglehurtz just watching your delivery 😂
Information and comedy at its best.
Infotainment
Good lookin out making that tonight!
People that use GMRS radios are happy and smile frequently.
People that use HAM radios are sad and only smile when you mention spurious emissions.
My system is putting out 200 gigawatts on the FM, not sure why my hair is turning green and I keep crushing the neck on my Astatic microphone.
@@c.cmanakabubba9708 LSB = no carrier, so your hair should be fine. 🤔
CB isn't dead, we all just went up 1 MHz in frequency 😉. I would like to see (or do) a 50 watt GMRS vs 11 watt SSB CB showdown.
I had a nice conversation with a gentleman in the UK this morning on LSB from here in the US. Is that even possible with gmrs?
The CB will win. I used to talk to Iceland from Pittsburgh on SSB CB.
With CB...no silly repeaters needed.
@@justinrayguitars6024with repeaters or Zello, sure. But, I think most people on GMRS don't give two cares about making contacts with people around the world on a radio. GMRS is mostly just local, or regional if you look at the North Georgia GMRS repeater network.
The only difference I can find is I can piss off a lot more people with my Boofwang than my bubble packed FRS
Bubble-pack/FRS radios are not GMRS radios.. I guess now I have to make another video to explain that one.
@TheNotaRubicon there are some bubble pack GMRS radios, but they should be avoided because they are often substandard.
I guess I are a radio dork, because I understands everything you speak off 🙂
I love your videos. Thank you ☺️. You are hilarious 🤣 ❤
From my cold , dead hands. (In my best Charlton Heston voice)
Shhh! That kind of talk will get you banned from the U-tubez!
Have a few questions please.
Does a gmrs radio have to have a license?
Also I live at a bottom of a hill about 100 foot height and would like to talk with a neighbor when phone goes out without a license.
And what radio would be best suited for my circumstances?
Thanks.
I’m glad my mobile can transmit on frs. It comes in handy
I knew the difference about GMRS and non-GMRS radios, but I really wanted to listen to Randy go on about it. Very entertaining. Thank you!
When is a non-GMRS radio a GMRS radio? When it's that weird GMRS version of the Baofeng UV-5R.
catechize........... I had to look that up. Sounds like one of those catholic church words. I always learn something new on this channel.
Hi, love the channel! If you’re going bye the latest version of the FCC rules, then I might be wrong, but wanted to say this stuff anyway.
Just a few things…
There are no such thing as GMRS channels 8-14. Those are FRS channels hence why the rules are stricter on those frequencies. Also, aren’t the 1-22 channel radios, technically FRS/GMRS walkie-talkies? I don’t know if they’re still sold, but I know I have some strictly GMR as walkie-talkies that only have 15 channels. Or channels 1-7 and 15-22. Are
Irregardless is not a word, who cares, Randy has his own language and you have to love it
I had a friend many years ago, who used to love to push my buttons saying "Irregardless". I haven't seen that guy in decades now, and everytime Randy says it, I can see my Finnish friend looking over his glasses, waiting for me to be baited into an argument.
Heres the easy breakdown on gmrs there tends to be a lot of helpful people and families having fun On ham radio there are nothing but biologists and radio anthropologists that can carbon date an ht antenna or a 6146 tube all the way back to a mostar .. on every frequency on ham radio the bands are littered with nothing but top notch experts and expert commentaries. “So they think” ✌🏻🙏🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
I love how you wind them up 😂
I like your videos very informative, but you do know irregardless is not a word lol
Um, my Baofeng UV-5R GMRS, it said absolutely nothing unusual on the box about GMRS. However inside the back of the radio itself under the battery, it in fact does say GMRS
Another great video Randy
I bought a ham radio for my Labor Day cookout, it tasted awful, And now every-time I fart, I also “roger beep”…any advice???? MR. Expert
Clearly you suffer from much confuckulation....
Can we all pause a moment and appreciate all that is the Bwoofang Uv-5r?
No?
Okay, I'm cool with that. Didn't want to pause anyway.
Carry-on.
Did you know you can switch that tidradio TD-H8 from ham to GMRS to wide open? I switched mine and even had to program it under the GMRS version of the H8 in the listing. Fun fact.
👌👌👌👍 Thanks. ...Alan in 🇨🇱
You got me at the into.... I need cigarette.
I would not say CB is dead but it is on life support. The trucking industry is still using CB but most of the time in standing traffic.
What I gained from this is go with ham that can do GMSR..... not a gmsr only radio
Are there more than 1 version of the uv-5r? I have one and under the battery it says walkie talkie with a TX round sticker. Also cant find a way to get GMRS on my screen.... so confused...
There are dozens of versions of the UV-5R, but none of them will say GMRS on your screen until you program it on your screen with the CHIRP software.
4:40 Question: you mentioned that mobile GMRS radios must not be able to transmit on channels 8-14. My impression was that they didn't transmit on channels 8-14 because the mobile radio manufacturers didn't want to deal with having to transmit on such low power compared to the other channels, e.g. for technical reasons they **chose** not to transmit on 8-14. From this video it sounds like that is not the case, and that it is an actual specification from the FCCs that mobile GMRS radios are not **allowed** to transmit on channels 8-14. Is that a requirement? If so, do you have any idea why that might be? Thank you so much for all the fantastic information you provide. 😊
I used to think the same thing, that it was just about power. But there is an actual line in the FCC Part 95 wording that says something about hand-helds only on those channels.
@@TheNotaRubicon I had no idea. Thank you very much, and for taking the time to read and respond. Much appreciated. 😊
I come here for a vocabulary lesson.... the radio garble is just a perk!
My good friend. I would really like to hear you exceptional expertise and review of the baofeng uv-s9x3 tri band radio. That would really tickle me. Nobody could do it better.
Sorry, I don't review ham radios.
@@TheNotaRubicon understood. Thank you good sir.
@@TheNotaRubicon You don't? Haven't you reviewed the UV5R multiple times?
No, I have not. I have never done a review of the UV-5R.
That's not a warning, it's a "Tease".
What do you think of the quensheng uv k5 .
Am I even spelling it right , idk .
I wonder how many of the sad FCC's are actually HAM's themselves.
There use to be a ham in the enforcement bureau.
Let the feelin hurtin😂😂😂 commence...
Thank you for unconfuckluating this for us..
Just a noob question from a new subscriber. After seeing your video about the Wouxon KG-UV9PX, it got me wondering. If the radio is unlocked and GMRS channels have been programmed, is it legal to transmit on those channels with a GMRS license, even though its a ham radio?
The FCCs says thou may transmit on GMRS frequencies only with GMRS approved radios, so, no.
@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you...I appreciate your keeping me straight with the FCCs
Thank you!!
My wife bought a Beofeng walkie talkie on TEMU for $1.99. It is an 8W radio. It is DTMF encoded. No mention of GMRS. No mention of license required. I am GMRS licensed. Can I use it?
If it did not say "GMRS" on the product listing, and if there is not a "GMRS" sticker under the battery, then it is a ham radio.
Thanks.
Can the new Baofeng UV-5R GMRS model be unlocked for Ham channels ?
I love the content disclaimer 😂 thanks for deconfuckulating!
Randy, just curious if your 2nd generation TIDRADIO is showing 10 watts on the display even though it is transmitting 5 watts.
Thats not a scale of watts on the display, it is a display of power from 0 to 10.. Where 10=5W/high power and 5=2.5W/low power
In other words, yah..
@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you Randy I didn't know that.
How do you like that Tidradio?
Oops 😂 I think my gigglehurtz split lmao
I tried connecting to a repeater via "frequency mode" It wouldn't work even if ctcss is set. I have to use "channel mode"
100% 👍👍
does that LMR radio let you program from the keypad or do you need a computer and cable?
WHEN front panel programming is enabled It allows for some keypad programming, but you cant do everything.
The difference is that ham radios are sad, and GMRS radios are happy.
At first I didn't like your video,then I watched a ham 2.0 video... 😂
I saw where someone share where it said arrl reported that there's more gmrs license then ham tech license
The mygmrs website says: As of April 14, 2021, the total number of GMRS licensees in the United States reached 100,000.
As of February 2023 numbers show GMRS licenses total 336,513 That's more than triple the number of licenses in just two years.
The ARRL website says this week there are this many hams: Novice = 5,939 Technician = 377,230 General = 187,263 Advanced = 33,090 Extra = 155,206
For a grand total of 758,728 licensed ham radio operators.
An interesting question is how many hams also have GMRS licenses. I have both. (plus a private pilots license and a scuba diving license but Randy doesn't like off topic comments. Sorry, Randy)
I know irregardless was intentional... And I will accept that.
I miss the background music.
Informative and fucking hilarious.
Is there a tekmat of the month club i dont know about?
it`s never too late to get your GED
Never knew gmrs radios were a thing
They aren't where I live. I don't think anyone knows about GMRS here.
I’m curious, what’s your 2 most used HT radios to date?
UV-5R and XTS5000 ..
Its so nice that there is a space where we can talk radios without the hamsters.
Do you need a subscription of any sort to operate the GMRS radio?
The little research that i have done i have seen a subscription needed.
No , but the FCC says you need to buy a license
@TheNotaRubicon 2 question here...
1] is the GMRS License different from the ham radio License?
2] I live in Washington state, and my brother lives in Arizona, and I am trying to figure out what would be the best and easiest way to communicate with him in a SHTF situation... ham radio or GMRS radio?
I guess freedom comes with a cost.....
Gotta pay your buck 'o 5
How does one bake a radio? Is there a Farr’s oven?
45 minutes at 375 degrees F. Then the Farrs are all baked in!
GMRS hand helds are good for many users. A UV5R is better. An 11 meters band hand held is capable of many more fars. It depends on what you want...
You had me at squirt out.
Have you messed with the UV 17 yet?
Good one, Randy. There is much confuculation out there, thanks for clearing some of it up. Missed the background music tho...
I'm so using your big words 😂
i thought you would list the reasons why to use GMRS.
I didn't think the fcc had ever actually assigned numbers to the gmrs channels?? Just because everybody I ever tried to talk to about it busted my chops, till I just quit talking to radio guys on the interwebs!!
You thought wrong.
Didnt the fcc say they arent pursuing use of non-type approved radio use on gmrs?
Yes, they have publicly said that, but wait until you see tomorrow's video.
