I was at the Sutherland Lounge in the early 60s to see Miles and in walked Abbey Lincoln. Well, you would have thought the pope walked in. She was held in such high regard that the entire club became silent and, of course, the musicians' mouths dropped open. She had enjoyed such respect.
The intro alone belies the actual mood of this composition but the scathing irony of the “love for sale” quote. There’s much musical poetry happening in the space of a few minutes.
What an impact! NY Times published an article today about Max Roach and linked to this video, highlighting the drum solo in the last minute and twelve seconds. Wow. He didn't need to add anything, he just drove home the whole message of the song. To me, each of those final bars were a way to say "think about it!"
So the last 1.5 minutes so so - that melodic repetition - is there a message, a meditation? . . . it was so restrained - did it mean something or was it just a master class . . .
this song was a political statement so Roach's seemingly 'simplistic' drumming here has a purpose, you younger people viewing this seeking out a 'drummer extraordinaire' and wondering what all the fuss is about - there are plenty of of other Roach recordings showing where people like Neil Peart, etc., learned their craft
One of hundreds of great solos by Clifford Jordan… Check out his "Glass Bead Games". When one considers the quality/value of the recording in proportion to its notoriety, I think it is just to say that "Glass Bead Games" is probably the most underrated jazz recording of all time.
To all - addition to my answer for Christo. You can also try to find another excellent footage of this suite, which was filmed on January 15, 1964 in Baden Baden a.k.a. Complete German concert. This project of Max Roach is one of his most politicaly engaged and musically brilliant statements of this great man. I saw him few times solo and with quartet and was always delighted. Regards from Slovenia!
Refreshingly honest music played by professionals who have mastered their craft without the help / obstruction of all the gear, synths, pedals, electric keyboards and guitars (and industry unto itself, superseding the music). Incredible! And the audio is comparable to all the supposedly superior equipment of today. Clever insertion of Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" in the intro.
No. At the time, Max Roach, Charles Mingus along with jazz writer Nat Hentoff had to form their own record label, CANDID, in order to produce their music like as heard it. For example, when Mingus recorded the first recorded version of Fables of Faubus, Columbia refused to let him include the lyrics to the tune. He had to form Candid, in order to record it as he intended(on "CMingus Presents CMingus") > no 'industry" help here. Max and Abbey's Freedom Now! Suite was on CANDID as well. You don't even have to entertain the question regarding whether Columbia would have recorded this at the time). This video of Max and Abbey(*) was done by Belgian state television (you can bet your behind it wasn't on American commercial television in 1964! ! !)no real music industry involvement there either. (*) Not to forget the amazing solo by Clifford Jordan! (Who 10 years later formed his OWN musician-owned/non industrial record label STRATA-EAST with Stanley Cowell, but that's another story for another video!)
I saw her at a club in Seattle over 20 years and she was great. However, I obtained a CD from my local library a couple of days ago that she must' recorded in the last ten years. Sorry I forgot the name and I couldn't identify it on the Wikipedia discography; but I was very disappointed- the songs (one featuring a children's chorus) were not catchy or swingin' and she sounded tired. Maybe I'm getting old myself :)
The lyrics are in the first comment in this forum(open up Bill Orner's comment). But why don't you transcribe them yourself? ESPECIALLY if you have the intention of singing them yourself. And if you're not a native English speaker, make sure that you understand every word and their historic significance… This is NOT like just singing your interpretation of "Misty"… >>>It's as "serious as your life".
You can see the anger and pain on Abbey's face as she sings those words. She was a freedom fighter. Jazz is the music of truth, freedom, and beauty!
Brilliant
She is stunning! Thank you for posting!
Max Roach, Abby Lincoln. Big time jazz music.

Max Roach: drums - Coleridge Perkinson: piano - Eddie Kahn : bass - Clifford Jordan: Tenor sax - Abbey Lincoln : vocals

This is dope 👏🎉👏👏👏🎉
I absolutely loved 'Abbey Lincoln's' performance in the movie 'Nothing But A Man' fabulous all-around performer.
Thank you
BLACK MUSIC MATTERS AND IS 1 OF THE 7TH WONDERS OF THE WORLD U MAY TRY BUT U CAN'T REFUSE IT
She was absolutely gorgeous
This piece is one of the most compelling compositions ever composed in the 20th century. There is no better expression of oppression any where.
The lyrics are a classic example of “show, don’t tell.” They aim to put you inside the man instead of observing from a safe distance.

I talk to him in 2004 .He had a cousin named Charlie Williams who was a piano player. Max wife was Abbey Lincoln. He had a great sense of humor.
This was recorded in the early 60s! I think Driva Man has the potential to become the anthem of the black lives matter movement.
I still feel the sadness for my black man. And I still love him no matter what he has to deal with. Heart to heart.
🥃👍🏿

AWESOME NOSTALGIA 👌🏽THANK YOU 💎💙🦋
I love when the time signature changes to 5/4 right when Abbey starts her solo. So talented!
daaaaamn right 5/4 is so out of time
Abbey Lincoln and fearlessness, that's been her mode of life. This performance is just a single small example. Wasn't she brilliant?
She was!
Swede McGuire she was fearless, beautiful and amazing....chills.

I think the industry helped them, actually - can't imagine us seeing that vid without it being involved somehow
