One more exceptional concert by Heramb Hemanth, the twin brothers. The sense of "aesthetics" both in melody and rhythm is what makes them so so unique and special. Two young geniuses in the house! God bless.

Recently Ms Amrutha Murali, a renowned and on the upward swing to stardom in our music, had a lecdem on Subbarayashastri who had the rare fortune of being the sishya or his famous father and his immediate Thiruvayyar neighbor the mahasadhu Thyagarajaswamikal. Ms Murali talked about Thyagarajaswamikal brainchild of "Sangathi Creation" in his song to build up the tempo of his kritis. While she talked about the absence of sangthi steps in Muthuswami Dikshitar's kritis which had its of delightful uniqueness of Madhyakala{Madhyamakala is a misnomer as per the late eminent jurist-cum-our-muisic's-outstanding-critic Ananathanarayanan saar} charana fast sahitya Ms Amrutha talked about the special feature of sangati building within it : She used "O Rangashayi" as an example : The snagatis are built on "O" while "Rangashayi' remained unchanged in its rendering. Here the gifted Heramba and Hemantha rendered the whole O Rangashayi as part of RTP{Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi : This RTP is in fact Ragam-Tanam-Padam where instead of a one line "Palalvi" the whole song is rendered thus giving us RT Padam, that eminated from a very young [died at a young 33, sad] Swathi Thirual, the erstwhile Maharaja of my native Travancore kingdom that was to only a limited extent exploited by the greedy and racist British rulers. (A fantastic layavinyasom [ Fo not call it an uncouth "Thani" as per that eminent violinist M Chandrasekaran Saar! We rasikas must lsiten and follow him] by two brilliant youngsters spark my Carnatic-music-rasika heart at 76 as I write these heartfelt notes!]
I tell you the pullamkuzhal identical twins -- as the youngest child of the 9 kids of my parents I was 10 years younger than my just elder brother who retired -- and sadly died at 82 -- as Air Marshal of Indian Air Force and yearned for a younger one -- a sister preferrably -- who could call me 'Kanthichetta' as I am a Malayali or even better identical twin sister just like the ones who sat across from me in my kindergarten class -- my strict Parukutty Amma teacher who could sing "Vande Matharam" to the cheers of Mahatma Gandhi who had it sung at everyone of his Delhi sandhyavandana assembly who chastened me for staring at the stunnig twins who sat side-by-side instead of rewriting to perfection daily transcriptions of [native Malayalam[, [North Indian] Hindi and [Hindu sages' ]Sanskrit; my desire of having twin sisters materialized; however , I still hold dear to my heart the joy of sighting just any twins -- but IDENTIACAL ones. There are couple of identical twin sisters on Carnatic concert tour these days. Let's see what is in store for us after our sweet and dear surrendertoperfectionwithhumilityviolinist M Chandrasekaran saar's "LAYAVINYASOM." .... MUST BE SWEET. Behag? Kapi? Neelambari? Don't worry ; I will take anything from Heramba and Hematha ( I hoe they will one of these days play ; Voleti mahavidwan's favourite : Amba Souramba -- hear me Heramba?[Why does the brilliant Anand need taped fingers at this young age? I wonder] Narayana Teerthar and his mellifluous Sanskri and Darbarikanada{Hemantha's flute matches with jubba's colour ornamented with those saffron circular rings around. What a feast to my septiagenarian eyes here in River Islands, Calif on a sunny yet chilly Feb 8th Tuesday afternoon!!!} Paramananda ... I get 'paramanandam' from this pullamkuzhal recital !! Ha ha ... Sri koustubhadhara pahi mukunda ... Namaskar to the artistes and all rasikas worldwide ad pendemic here in the US becomes endemic

Akshay Anand is something else; if he persevers he could be the new gen's Pazhani or Murugabhoopathi or Mani Iyer or Ragu or Dr TK Murthy
Indeed. Anand is indeed lucky to have the good fortune of having Sri. Kalidas as his Guru. And Sri. Kalidas has done such a good job of passing the Pudukottai bani to Anand. I can not emphasize enough the importance of manodharma and it is only through a good Guru a shishya gets the foundation on which to lay his or her individuality. If the Pudukkottai bani is so evident in Anands play then credit should equally go to the Guru. That Anand is such a capable student and player is evident from how quickly he has established himself along with Grade A AIR artist. I am a big fan of the Dakshinamurthy style and PSP and CSM fanatic who were like the sun and moon of that school. I wish Anand the best in his career. He has a glorious future ahead of him and hope he grabs every opportunity to learn and enthral music lovers like you and me.
To me the nadam of the mridangam and notes should give away the player. It is easy to identify Anands play just like the play of the greats of the past. It is pure Pudukottai.
Take for instance Flute Jayanth. He has imbibed so much of his Guru and grandfather's manodharma. And there is no denying that he is a very fine artist. One feels assured that the art is safe in the hands of such artists.
@@srinivasanshivakumar6616 Dear Sri Shivakumar, I just got a letter from Shri Anand Srinivasamurthy who is the father of Anand we are talking about. As I was wishing Anand a bright future and fame as in the line of many illustriuous mridangam artistes of yesteryears -- because of his leftiness -- I put Sri Pazhani at the top of the brief list. Little did I know that Anand's own gruruji is none other than Sri Kalidas [who I have never heard of just like the guru of Patri; in that case I could at least once watch him play as a young Patri sat behind him; I wish I could get to watch with glee Sri Kalidas in action!] when Anand's father Sri Anand Srinivasamurthy who wrote to me 4 hours before your own elegantly written letter [ are you a professor of English? or a Physicist? Chemist? Mathematician? Why? Among all the disciplins those who studied -- apart from English Literature which was studied in ernest by the great GeeyeNBee { his thesis was on Arnold ToyeNBee!!!} "Chandrajyothi" for GNB was always "Moonlight"! -- students of those three specialties master English along the way : case in point : MDR, a student of Physics at Palghat's Vicoria College [the name still stands] even as his buddy Palghat Raghu studied Mathematics. Thanks to his 'tapas' at Kalkshetra MDR excelled in extemporaneous[is that same as our Manodharma?] English speeches; Raghu saar was no good at formal speeches but -- I had heard him carry on easily with American audiences] was a known English speaker with no fault. The point I am saying is -- with an unexpected death in the immediate family I was sddened to wake up this Feb12th morning lacking any energy at all -- your meticulous, masterly English letter brightened up my day so that I can relisten to Anand's playing followed by the most recent kutcheri of Pantula Rama. "Manodharma", yes ! Saar! That's it. With that handy all mridangam players can reach -- with perseverance and humility -- the stars.
Star you are in the art of English letter-writing. Don' t ever lose it[coming from a 76 year-old transplanted Malayali from Changanacherry to Central California].
Flute Jayanthh. I like him too. But -- these identical brothers carried me away. I can hardly wait to attend their 'live' kutcheri in San Fransisco or San Jose two main cities with populated with huge counts of South Indians. My tiny town has few S Indians such as I who do not have the resources to organize a kutcheri.
With all those precious kutcheris in an abundant collection in the old cassette format I have full kutcheris every night -- the only problem is I am the only one in the audience in my tiny office overlooking a lake nowadays taken over for fun by swans, big and small ducks, mallards and occasional geese in transit on the way to Mexico.
Sri PSP was the guru of a mridangist from Kerala, a family friend, Padmashri Krishnankutty Nair.
In saw a 'circular' beauty in two names from the email replies I received 4 hours apart : 'Srinivasan' Shivakumar's followed by Anand 'Srinivasan' -- father of our Anand! Beginning with "Srinivasa" and ending in "Srinivasa" isn't that a delightful ' circular' names connection? All in the context of our Anand who we love.

@Anand Srinivasamurthy Sri Srinivasamurthy, I was saddened by the unexpected death in the immediate family; I woke up rejected this morning here in California on the 12th of Feb -- only to rejuvenated by your kind and loving letter. Proud one indeed. I have never heard of Sri Kalidas[anywhere I can watch him in action?]
I was thinking of the manodarma of many greats of the yesteryears. Because of Anand's leftiness I put Sri PSP at the top of the list! With his gently serious handsome face he must be a delight to all leading artistes. I can hardly wait to see him in action. I am 76 and do not get to travel to S India frequently as I did up until 2019. Then came the awful covid misery. I live in a tiny town with vast open spaces for walking -- the only exercise I indulge in. San Fransisco and San Jose are two big cities with a sizable S Indian population where kutcheris are organized. Please let me know when Anand will be in those towns. I shal meet him and drive him around [though 76 I enjoy driving my new Cadillac XT4!!] if he has the time.

My maiden experience with the identical twins. Rangan and Sunil Kumar are familiar figures. The lefty Akshay Anand is new to me too. With perfect recording the percussion sounds do enhance the sweet pullamkuzhal sounds. I am in for a great treat this Sunday morning -- delightfully chilly morning -- here in Central Valley California. The first hum by Heramba[if I were to assume that the left facing young man is Heramba] I knew it was Andolikaa. Great feeling. In neraval mridangam thrives; with excellent recording system Ganjira's sounds are clear and sweet. Aduthathu ... Nasikabhooshani!! I found a way to identify who is who among twins : Assuming Hemantha is facing the audience, with his one fold up on the jubba sleeves, it ought to be Hemantha. I,f on the other hand, Heramba is facing us, he must be Heramba. Vittal's playing with Nasikabhooshani neraval is pure perfection. Is he son of the famed violinist Vittal Ramamurthy?[did I get the name correct? Sorry, if I didn't] I love this song : Manavinalakincha NalinaKANTHI !!! I LOVE IT !! Bale Kamboji elaborate alapanai. After Sikkil Sisters, I am hearing a very pleasing flute duet after many years. Violin is too melodious.Where was the program conducted.? In India or elsewhere? TKS for uploading such a wonderful concert.

If you want to continue as a duet please learn by seeing videos of Sikkil Neela and Kunjumani on how to perform as duet performers. Currently your performance is below par. It is very difficult to have the bombardment of two flutes played at full throttle. The decibel level is too high to tolerate for the ear. Kambodhi was a wasted opportunity. Needs a lot of skill to play and attract the audience. Other components in your performance do not indicate that your sadhana is enough. Just playing the song should attract the audience. You lack this. Copy Mali if you can.
