  • Toile Fitting And Why You Don’t Always Need To Make One. Whether you call it a toile, muslin, test garment or even a mockup, it is a valuable skill to learn when to make one and when not to make one.
I demonstrate fitting a semi fitted jacket which I have never pattern drafted before, in this toile/muslin fitting I be checking for shoulder and armhole alignment, including the neckline and the no revere and shaping to the front and so much more…

It was great to see the toile and the “real” garment you made, using the changes you decided to do. I agree with all those decisions, it looks a LOT better curved and with the pocket higher.
Just for beginner Americans: a “toile” in the U.K. is called a “muslin” in the U.S. And what British people call “calico” is called “muslin” in the US. There IS a fabric in the U.K. called “muslin”, but it’s very lightweight and translucent and not at all what you want to use for a test garment. Now the American beginners will know what you are referring to. I’ve learned a lot from sewing and going to fabric stores here. Oh, and what we Americans call notions (ribbons, zippers, thread, buttons, etc) is called “haberdashery” in the U.K., which to my American ears, sounds very fancy and posh!! :):)
Oh, and Colleen, I like your hair like that!

Another gorgeous outfit. I wish you would do a Look Book of some of your creations over the years. Your sense of style is impecable...so is your sewing.

What a great idea something that I will consider, it's going to take some planning so I probably have to do a couple of videos which I will upload early next year. Thank you for taking the time to comment Anne.

Colleen great video! Thank you for the tips. Question, for jeans do you suggestions on different type of muslin or fabric to use when fitting jeans?

A drill heavy calico fabric, it is firm and rigid. Thanks for commenting.

Ahh, thank you. My jeans need to have 2% stretch, is there a drill heavy calico out there that stretches?

Not that I'm aware of, I would recommend buying cheap fabric of the same weight with the 2% stretch.
