Cycling the British Coast - 4.1. The Outer Hebrides & North Coast

- The fourth leg of my ride around the British coastline is an epic 2-week adventure up the Outer Hebrides, along the northern coast of the mainland, and down the Moray Coast to Aberdeen. This is the first part of that adventure.
Starting on a long ferry ride from Oban to the beautiful island of Barra, my first four days advancing north along the remote and barren Western Isles is a mixed bag of tropical beaches, violent rain storms, ancient standing stones and missed landmarks.
Back on the mainland, I find rolling hills, distant dramatic mountains, and thrashing shorelines, as I pick my way north from Ullapool to Durness, and then turn east for the first time on my trip to cycle the north coast. Here I made it to the northernmost tip of the island, John O'Groats, before ending at Duncansby Head - the furthest point from Land's End down in Cornwall.
The second part of the trip will be in the next video...

That "old seafarer" at 21.10 had a definite look of "Oh crap! Another bloody tourist!" about it too. 😜😁
I'm really enjoying this series of videos... something I just couldn't do myself...so yeah... really great. Thank you 😊
Great video series, brings back memories from 40 years ago, Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, the NC500 route (North Coast 500) has been a mixed blessing; alot of extra traffic from the hordes of motorhomes on often unsuitable roads. Looks like a springtime ride that you took? A few of us cycled the Outer Hebs from Oban (we drove from Manc and parked in the leisure centre car park free for 8 days), and also included Skye and Mull and Ardnamurchan in May and it was magical! Well done, already looking fwd to the next instalment.
Sounds like a great adventure! I'm amazed that you knew it was filmed last spring though!!
Hi Ollie, nice to to see you out and about again. So to the South, all down hill from now then! All the best S&J.
I have been to the Isle of Skye for a week and it was raining and windy but very beautiful. Stunning view 😍
I really enjoyed the ride-along..
Amazing trip, Ollie. Beautiful!
I am always thankful when cyclists have made themselves visible in such bright colors.
Nice one olive
Thanks Louise
Great vid. Great crazy junction.
Being a while but I am so glad to see a wonderful video from Bee Here Now.
Thank you!
What a great bike ride you're doing, wish I was there. The water and beaches at 5:45 look fantastic, I see you forgot your swim trunks. lol Olli you take the saying "live life to the fullest" to the limit.... Enjoy your ride.......
Thanks Mike! My number one fan I think!
@@BeeHereNowuk Someday I would enjoy buying you a coffee. Breaks over, back to work for me......
Super video, thanks. Its actually pronounced Melvick, just FYI. If you look at 19:19 where you can see your route map and Melvich, you can see 3 golden beaches on the coast. I'm from the one on the left.
Good Effort
Great video, beautiful scenery.Done quite a few trips upto Scotland over the last 2 years and would love to go abit further north on the west coast!
Great video Olli - as you said epic ! Really enjoyed it and very impressed by the way you did it. Lookin' forward to next part to Aberdeen ! All the best mate!
Beautiful pics, stunning. Safe ridin', mate!
Thanks Johannes
Great video, recognised some sights from way back when I did a Scotland trip. Nicely filmed and edited, really interesting!
Well done, Ollie. I'm doing well to ride five miles on my push-iron, these days (then I walk like John Wayne for a few days after - because I'm sore in places we can't talk about!)
Haha I know the feeling!
Wonderful video. I have spent many weeks of holidays in recent years in all of the places you visited here. Many happy memories.
Glad you enjoyed it
That was amazing! Stunning scenery and great atmosphere! You don't half have some adventures! I went to the Uists a few years ago rescuing hedgehogs... it was such an experience. Brilliant video Ollie!
Yes to marigolds! You remind me of that polo that vw made with the mixed matched panels. Could call yourself the harlequin cyclist. Haha
Hahaha I hope that doesn't stick
Great vid Olli. be funny when you get to the most easterly point of Scotland, i live here and its not that easy to access lol im from springhead btw. lol
Oh great! Small world! You'll have to pop the kettle on 😄
Great adventure your having . 😊 I get your point about the amount of tourists, it’s all relative though , I do cycle a lot and like the back roads quite , then when I’m on my motorcycle up on the 500 , I have to stop about every lay by for camper vans , especially around loch Eribor😠 now I’m converting a van ..😅
Yes it's all good though. I think it's relative to how tired you are as well 😂
Love the lighthouse tagging. Colours? - You’re like a bag of Skittles 🤣
Thoroughly enjoying your films, liked and subscribed now 🙂👍🏻
Thanks so much! 😊
Great journey, I’m very envious. Beautiful beaches in the Hebrides, pity you couldn’t have stayed longer. What time of year did you do the ride? Did you not think of dropping in to Dounreay after your Sellafield trip, or over to the Orkneys? Looking forward to the next video.
Shame you didn't cross the Pentland Firth to Orkney, you could've come here and done the shortest scheduled flight in the world that goes between here and Papa Westray.
That NC500 label has turned a great drive into a nightmare.
The nature of the east coast is completely different from what you've already done but that's not to say it's not scenic in its own way. Until you get to the really flat land that is.
(Isn't Knoydart, near Mallaig, the most remote part of the British mainland?)
Brilliant video love your passion and enthusiasm looks amazing ...thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Just found out youre doing this. Going to stop watching and rewind several episodes. Bye for now 👋
