    One advice that I've been given which I think is excellent is: look around where your future farm is, and see what grows like weeds. Farm that first. E.g. don't try to grow berries that need you to change soil PH. Don't grow veg that requires an amount of water you can't provide. Don't farm stuff that requires a whole lot of sprays, fertilizer and treatments. Grow what grows.

      our land is so very fertile and grows many high nitrogen weeds very tall grass lots of netels so i think corn would be a very good choice using this knowlege

    Hi Moreno, thank you for this video. Good point about the jang seeder ;)
    My tip: write a simple business plan. It clarifies the whole farming process and the costs involved. I am currently writing one and have split costs into necessary startup costs, annual reoccuring costs and costs for year two and later. Each time I go back to the plan I will revisit the costs and most of the time something can be moved from startup to later. It really helps to clarify what you really need.

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  3 роки тому +5

      Exactly that Sabrina! I know you want the Jang, but it might be better for later;) A lot of the success comes down to this initial planning! But at a certain point it's time to make the move ;)

    I’ll say don’t quit a good paying job too soon, I may have to get a job again after 1.5 years because I’m moving the farm to a new location and I’ve been without veggies since the beginning of summer. I finally got my first plantings in. But there’s a whole lot to preparing land, some more than others, and you either need lots of money, lots of your own hard labor, or both. And that’s just the land. It is all idealistic, but reality is quite the opposite, especially when you start actually doing the physical work to complete your goals. So either have a bunch of money saved, like $50K or keep your job even just working 3 days instead of 4 or 5, until you are confident of your ability to maintain production. Thanks for the video Moreno!

      Well make sure that if you should have questions that you look into Dutch farm methods, especially the organized and efficient way of working. Going to a Dutch farm you’ll see the farm is well organized with designated work areas and well thought out garden layouts.
      There is so much knowledge about cultivation, soil improvement, water management.
      And it’s very specialized, so specialized that they’re on of the smallest nations in the world but also the world’s second food exporter after the US. There is endless online written and spoken information in English on farming from Dutch farmers and the famous international renounced agricultural university of the country educating people from all over the world.
      But there is also a great American invented method where a guy got an old greenhouses and created a way to grow plants and Tilapia fish in a closed loop hydroponics aquarium pumped round into grow bed setup with fish feces feeding plants and plants in a natural gravel like medium to hold the roots filter this water for the fish. Can’t remember what he fed the fish, but you could grow your own maggots as fish feed with a solar plus batterij driven ventilator air vent connected to a enclosed hanging box with rotting kadaver/ organ meat on a platter placed on a mash bottom, so maggots crawl out and fall into the water and flies can come in to lay their eggs. And with compost designated areas to even heat the greenhouse during cold periods it’s extra efficient (he got additional compost materials for free saving heating cost whilst making great compost soil for his outside gardens saving on having to heat the greenhouse). This with the several hydroponic growing levels makes it very space efficient and cheap way to garden/ farm.

      Hi, Gaby - the first thing I was thinking: DIVERSIFY, if anything happens to your bees, disease, some chemical that is used by big ag - you could be wiped out through no fault of your own. If bees are only 30 - 50 % of your operation, you would be on the safe side. As you are in the state of NY would a bread and breakfast be an option ?
      I know of small farmers who gave up on most of the traditional farming, they have fields but no more animals except a few pigs (what they need) plus likely chickens. They house construction workers (breakfast, and evening meal, good homecooked food), in summer they have families with the kids.
      A touristic region is within 30 - 60 driving minutes (only summer and some fall tourism), the town where they are is nice but nothing special, they would not attract normal tourists. When they have nice weather the tourists will drive to the lakes or go hiking and if it is raining the lady of the house will sometimes drive with them to a do sightseeing in the city.
      The interesting thing is that the children come back when they have kids, it is not a glamorous holiday, but very family friendly, the animals, and the region has enough attractions that it works. I guess she is a good cook and she is a social person that knows to make that into a special experience (like making the tour guide for them to compensate for bad weather).
      If you are close enough holiday on the farm with visiting touristic spots - like NYC could be an option, folks may want to visit the National Parks (looking for beavers etc), a few days on the farm with the animals and fruit / forest or organic garden, (if you have bees not suited for people with allergies) and they could do a one day tour to the big apple as well.
      That family also makes money from baking bread and baked goods, but they sell only at the market in a nearby larger town, their town does have a farmer's market but they do not bother (our residents know where to find us) so they are quite time conscious.
      It helps that it is a couple. And adult daughters as backup.

    • @Horse237
      @Horse237 2 роки тому

      I was thinking of pasture raised animals but having the pasture shared by goats, chickens and pigs. I discovered a new breed of pig that does not dig up roots. You might think of bees and raising flowers. A partner might want to raise flowers for their local shop. Two or three uses for one farm will reduce costs.

      Maybe you find someone that has a piece of land that they would rent to you. In which case you know exactely what you do not want when you buy - with some experience under your belt.
      A good balcony game, maybe a few beds at a land of friends. Then moving up to leasing. a plan (planting schedule) and photos could help you convince owners. Like he mentioned - NOW that people see that he takes good care of a property he is getting offers to buy.
      I think many people do not want to sell (be it a house or a farm or homestead or holiday cabin) and they are wary WHOM they would get as renter. If they know that you have your act together, will pay your lease or at least take good care of the place - most people would not mind have such a person on their land for 5 years or so.
      The problem with people that fail to pay is often not even the loss of money - some people can weather that quite easily and they would not lose sleep over it. But if tenants lose control over their life to the point where they do not pay, they often are also in other kind of trouble, or they "lose" it alltogether. Not only do they not pay rent - they even cause damage, by negligence or even intentionally. (Happened to older relatives). I know people that would rather not rent than to get that kind of trouble, and even if you you fulfill all financial obligations that you will not put poison in the ground, try to get rid of tree stumps with diesel, bleach, old motor oil.
      (no kidding, many people see that as legitimate attempt, no idea why they obsess with the tree stumps, I would grow mushrooms and let nature rot it down over a few years).
      And in traditional farming it is almost a taboo to sell land or a part of it. Unless the owners die, move away, etc. Everything that reeks of: they need the money and "have" to sell is against the code of honor.
      But if a person is capable and a good stewart, it is O.K. to sell to them. They are doing you a favor so to speak, the neighbours and community will not assume the seller needed the money.
      I looked it up he is now in the South of France, you bet the farmers there roll like that, that is why he is now getting the offers.
      I would make a _contract_ though - 5 years minimum and clarify what you are allowed to do on it. Setting up a metal garden shed or container ? Fences ? Digging a well ? - or is it only electric fences. sooner or later you migh consider chickens, or sheep - and maybe even a pig.

      Good idea! Most foot traffic is reduced by creating a good design for your farm BEFORE you start it! I'll see what I can do to make a video about it.

    Very interesting and surprising tips. I'm left with 2 questions;
    1. Why don't you use government grants as this is a big deal in France?
    2. isn't it a pity to rent land and then move on while no dig farming is a lot about improving the soil on the long term?
    Many thanks for the e-book, it's very helpful.

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  3 роки тому +4

      Hey there. We never needed any grants because we used our own money. As for the soil, the money spent in compost for the no dig beds is earned back in year one + profits. It also happens to be one of the fastest ways to convert a plot of land into a production area that simultaneously minimizes the workload significantly (a lot less weeding).
      If you know that you can only rent the plot for 1 year I wouldn't personally do it this way. But we know that we're renting this land at least 3/5+ years so it's more than worth it. And if we leave the plot behind, the next person renting this land will have a fertile garden;)

    Yep - top video Moreno. You can't expect to start up a farm with really limited funds. I'd say it's better to wait till you've got enough money for a decent set up, rather than try to get by with not enough (or substandard) gear. You could even try to borrow money from family with a repayment plus interest. The only thing stopping me starting right now is Covid would you believe! And i'll take your advice and make the first year a pure trial. Nothing beats the voice of experience - thank you!

      @@haukbayer4510 Hey Hauk, no problems! I would personally go with mushroom logs (since we have a lot of this available in my area) although I haven't tried it yet. I'm not really in a position of giving you any advice on mushrooms since I know very little of it. I recommend you find the people that do!
