My friend's 2008 Yaris had a similar symptoms just like on this car, the shop that he went through told him that his transmission is dead and they had one lying around for $2k minus the labor, luckily he didn't took that offer and consulted with me first, I scanned his car and it throws out a P0977 Shifting Solenoid circuit B error, and it was just an easy fix, those things are pretty cheap in a 2nd hand parts shop, we found one for just $20 in Ebay and another $30 for a 4L Toyota ATF, his car runs like it used too again and he avoided being scammed.
I agree there is an awful lot wrong with the van. That being said, the prices of good used vehicles are still very high. The owner will need to see if it is cheaper to repair, using good parts, or to get a replacement. Years ago replacing a worn out vehicle with a newer one was a no-brainer but not now. I wish the owner luck with what he decides.
I appreciate a mechanic with integrity. Given that some mechanics will sell their customers on unneeded repairs, this car would be a gold mine, given all the needed repairs this has. They wouldn't care that the repair bill would exceed the value of the car. Glad to see you are putting your customer first. By the way, it is nice to see that you seem to be rather busy. I guess people are pleased with the quality of your work.
I appreciate the ethical analysis of why you’re declining service on this vehicle. There’s a point in any vehicle’s life where the cost of keeping it going vastly exceeds the resources that its owner has, and the “value” of the vehicle. That one looks like it’s reaching that point. Not only are there DTCs indicating moderately expensive repairs, but the scope of the oil leaks suggests that it would take a “gasket-and-seals” job to clean up the engine (and if you’re doing the transmission replacement, you might as well replace the rear main seal on the engine, since you’re already in there), and then there’s the suspension work it needs. At a guess, I’d wager that the owner can buy a whole new set of problems (er … vehicle) for that money. Sorry to hear about there being family drama in your life. It’s not fun to have to deal with that stuff, and yeah, it’s painful as well.
I remember working for UPS and finding out that they have a hard math for when to stop repairing their fleet of vehicles. Something to do with the annual cost of repairs versus the current value of the vehicle.
@@MonkeyJedi99 in a fleet environment like UPS, that's a very reasonable approach to things - basically you amortize the cost of the vehicle over time, which provides a fairly concrete sense of it's "value today", and then when you are evaluating repairs, it's a matter of a ratio between the cost of repair and the book value of the vehicle. When we are talking about personal vehicles, it's a bit of a different calculation because personal factors ranging from emotional attachment to the vehicle to the "market value" can come into play. Car Wizard (another channel) has a late 80s Ford F150 that the owner is sinking some $4K or more into repairs simply because while it's more than the truck is "worth", there aren't any options out there right now that get a similar vehicle for that money - so it's "worth it" to repair the 80s truck even though it's only in mediocre shape.
Not long ago that was true. But not any more. Acceptable new cars are no longer available at any price. They are super expensive, extremely poor quality, and they have all that self driving trash technology. You couldn't give me one. They are not safe to drive. I would rather spend $20,000 completely rebuilding an older vehicle than spending $50,000 on a new piece of trash. I was a government fleet mechanic for41 years. I quickly noticed that there was one vehicle that was way more reliable than anything else in the fleet. That was the 4.6L 2V Ford Crown Vic. I have been driving them for the past 30 years. They used to be everywhere, but many of them have been trashed. Finding decent ones is hard to do. I have a 2006 and 2007 Grand Marquis. The '06 has 381,000 miles, the 07 only has 36,000 miles. They are both worth new engines and transmissions when they wear out. So many of them were made that 4.6L 2V engines and AOD transmissions practically grow on trees. I plan on driving these cars for the rest of my life. As new vehicles get more expensive and continue to become more computer than car, the value of used vehicles and parts will continue to go up. New vehicles are simply no longer an option for a great many people, and likely never will be again.
Every generation has a “favourite” vehicle, and that’s often the car that’s nearly 20 years old (Panther platform is far older than that, having come out in 1979). Often, their proponents will point to how much simpler they are compared to modern vehicles, they’re easier to repair, etc. All of which is valid for some people. I imagine as a former technician, you probably feel more comfortable doing repairs yourself, or having someone do them for you - as long as they can explain what they’re doing to you. A lot of people simply aren’t inclined that way. I know enough to understand the gist of what my mechanic tells me, but frankly for most of what my cars need, I rely on the skills of others - I have to. If my mechanic comes to me and says “yeah - your car needs a boatload of work and it’s going to cost way more than the car is worth”, it’s time to replace it. That typically means I replace my cars somewhere around 10-12 years old. I currently have a 2015 Honda CRV - I’ll probably drive it another 4-5 years before it starts needing major repairs. I’ll decide then whether or not I put the money into it, or replace it. (So far, it’s been robust and reliable - is it “lower quality” than previous Hondas? Not to me)
Hi Ray, they say a problem aired is a problem shared and Face-book allows this to happen so easily. For me my problem started after being diagnosed with esophagus cancer but it was the 24 hour continuous pain that clouded my better judgement. I did not want to share my problems with anyone else. However I wrote a blog on Face-book and by golly, thanks to the many friends I had met on Face-book, I cannot say thank you enough to those who encouraged me to keep going. To you Ray I send the same encouragement, your videos are brilliant not just to us old tech's but think of the young mechanics you are helping in so many ways. You have a fabulous wife and kids, let them support you with the extra strength they can give to you Ray. Love you all ♥and best wishes to all watchers on these pages. 👍
Ray, I have a narcissist woman who gave birth to me, but I haven’t called her mother in 20 years. She (to this day) tries to cause problems and will do anything to cause problems. Like calling child protective services and 911, lying about abuse to our child. Telling the courts my dad never paid child support, but he was able to produce receipts. And getting the next guy she married…. Fired from his job because of lies and she was living off of his paychecks with child support. Well he got fired and she lost the house because her only source of income was him. So now my youngest sister and her are homeless. She cared more about hurting him, than thinking about the consequences of her actions. That was a decade ago and she still randomly tries to reach out to cause more pain. So I know all about ex family members doing everything they can to cause pain emotionally, physically, and financially. And they are NEVER held accountable for their lies.
Not sure if anyone's chimed in on the orange sealant on the trans, but Toyota's factory FIPG (Form In Place Gasket) for transmissions and driveline components is orange.

Hi Ray I feel for you with your family problems. I have gone through some issues myself. Hold it all together my friend you are a strong man and iam sure you will overcome these problems. Best wishes.👍🏻😎👍🏻
I completely understand, my family, and my wife's family have been toxic to us, almost 15 years later were still going strong. Her family have been the worst with us, telling her she needs to leave me, but she has stood strong through it all and she has stood beside me no matter what they say, im so proud of her for her belief in me. Take solace in ur immediate family, your kids and your wife are of the most importance. Family is family, but your kids and your wife should be your sole focus.
Many families have that one relative that always appear to want to place the stick in the spokes of the wheel. It does, however, take time to realize that we are better off without them. Good luck, Ray. You deserve to be happy. Best wishes to you and your family.
Sorry about the difficult family member. I think we all have that ONE person who loves to make everyone miserable. My ex boss had a 2013 WITH A 6 CYL. She bought it new and ran the living crap out of it.(TAXI SERVICE) When she took it out of service it had the jittery-toyota-transmission-syndrome. But she decided to "junk" it because it needed 2 new Catalytic converters to the tune of about $5k. She didn't think it was worth it, and she sold it to an employee for $300. It had 350,000 miles on it. He took it, had the cats done, gave it a tune up, and sold it for.. Get this... $11,000!!!!!! No joke. The Toyota mini vans, even super high mileage and broken sliding door motors and cables, are GOLD.
Same delay cold shifting on my 2000 Sienna. The transmission has seals that are dried up and the transmission shop overhauled it and now the vehicle is shifting normally again.
This is why you always keep up with services and preventative maintenance. My dad's 99 suburban had almost 300k miles on it before it started to show problems.
My dad had a Jetta turbo diesel, it had almost 800,000km on it when he passed away. He was religious about maintenance, and it was running in original specs when it was sold.
I have seen so many cars like this, virtually no maintenence, owners just expect it to work properly for no money, and then when something big happens expect a mechanic to be able to fix it in super quick time for cheap and it be as good as new again, this has so many problems it would be cheaper to just scrap it, then they will do it all again to another car and be surprised when it happens again.
@@TremaineLea Nice. My dad's suburban wasn't too far off from original specs, but after he calculated it being over 10k to get the frame and bodywork done he stopped taking good care of it. The last year of him owning it he just topped off the oil and didn't change it. He traded it in and got an 07 Silverado.
Only got themselves to blame really, spend a few quid every now and again, or a couple of thousand in one go, or another car, I have no sympathy for them, because we are on the same roads as these pieces of junk@@GrumpyIan
Many families have experienced similar issues as noted in the comments. You and wife unit have a wonderful nuclear family. Never perfect, never quiet, but yours. They are your concern and passion. All others pay cash, as they used to say. God Bless.
I'm major impressed with the ATF pour with only one free hand and a funnel that didn't fit down into the dipstick tube to stay in place on it's AND didn't spill a drop all while holding camera in the other hand! 👍👍
I agree with your findings. It would be cheaper to buy a new used van in better shape. Some places would suck the customer dry and they would still have a pile of junk.
I have had a mechanic tell me he "could" repair my car, but also that I should not put more money into it. After he explained, I agreed and took it back to trade in (for $50) on my next car.
Sometimes its cheaper to repair than replace a new vehicle is very expensive average payment 350.00 per month for years or a used vehicle you may be buying someone's problems if the other parts are OK I'd swap the trans
@@davidcraven277 On this specific vehicle, it has transmission AND engine leaks, as well as front end suspension parts to replace. And Ray didn't even do a frame inspection or check on anything related to the rear axle. Based on the interior, that one has had a pretty hard life.
Just for giggles, I'd be curious if some Lucas transmission goop would affect things at all. Then again, I don't know what the failure mode could be, but interesting nonetheless. Even then there's everything else that's wrong of course.
When my transmission had that problem the tech had to put it in 1st gear to get it on the truck to be towed to the auto gearbox shop. Apparently it was limp mode and shifted to 3rd unless you forced it into 1st.
Sorry to hear about your family problems Ray, been there myself I know how much it can get to you. I can see how happy you are when Lauren and the little one's are around you, keep your head up mate you'll get through through it 💯👍
Most likely a valve body issue on this transmission. I've replaced quite a few valve bodys in the U151e transmissions over the years. Not really much that goes wrong with these other than the valve bodys. Sonnex sells a remanufactured valve body for these. Always best to reset the adaptive values for the transmission too.
Why are you even thinking about transmission issues when the rest of the car is in the state that it is? Also in the state that it is, how much money do you think the owner has if it has been left to the state that it is now? It has done its time. Like Ray, I would not touch it. It is a money pit. It may be all they can afford but to do more work on this is to rob the customer. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.
Yeah the U151e in my Lexus was the absolute biggest piece of junk transmission shifting wise. Great car but I HATED that transmission. Installed a new updated valve body, OEM fluid, reset the TAPS and still had shift flare. Total hunk of junk. Sad because the 3.3 V6 is a legendary Toyota engine…
I think the trans fluid got low and the owner filled It back up with the wrong stuff, as it started working properly when he changed the fluid. If the transmission doesn't act up again after being driven for a couple of weeks, I think it would be worth fixing the front end issue and stopping the leaks.
Protip: RTV and automatic trannys don't mix because bits and pieces of silicone can easily get inside tiny little hydraulic passages and cause major problems!
Ray, I can sympathize with the family stuff, I have excommunicated a particularly obnoxious member. On a brighter note, seeing that Great Neck ratchet made me smile. I was given a Husky 3/8 drive socket set for Christmas in 1971, one socket cracked but all the others are still good and are still used. A few years ago the ratchet broke internally, I didn't want to throw it away so I bought one on Ebay and swapped out the internals. I still use it often, despite having many other ratchets, mostly S-K at my disposal. I can pretty much tell a story about every tool in my box, what car I was working on when I bought it, etc. That Husky set got me through minibikes, a motorcycle and many cars in similar condition to that minivan.
I heard from an old TV show on science the expression, "the experiment was a success but the results were a failure". Your videos don't aways have to be about winning. Life goes on..... .
I've changed a couple of Transmissions' fluid by pumping it out through the cooling connections by running the engine then replacing what came out and repeat until I see clean fluid coming out and quickly shut down the engine. This gets the old dirty fluid out of the torque converter and leaves only good stuff in there.
Hello Ray! Thanks for the videos! There is nothing like a family member, ex or otherwise to be able to sow havoc and ruin everyone's day. Sometimes you just have to make them "non gratis" and keep them out of your life. Easier said then done, especially with family! All the best to you and yours Ray. Keep on keeping' on! 😁

I agree with your assessment. This video illustrates the fact that if you don’t do regular maintenance on a vehicle when it’s due, they will fail, even Toyotas and Hondas.
My brother put a remanufactured trans through one if the big trans chains stores. 2006 Sienna with 230K miles. Total cost $1800. Drove it for a year before he totalled in in an accident. Of course it didn't have any leaks or bad parts. It was worth it.
I remember back in the good old days you could work on any car no computer just basic hand tools this new stuff is crap good job brother you got more patience than I do
Chin up Ray! Sometimes. The only family matters is the family you come home to at night. That's your #1 Priority and everything else takes a back seat! thanks for the new videos.
I am glad you went to correct fluid as a first step. I did get a Honda Accord to shift properly after putting in the correct fluid, but the trans still died a year later.
Good day to you, Ray! Glad your feeling better and rising out of your funk. Depression over unsavoury family matters is perfectly normal. You have my heart felt sympathies. Hang in there! Best wishes to you and Lauren at this difficult time. Love you guys!
I suspect that the trans fluid has been changed recently by the color of the fluid. On high miles that had not been changed before, this isn't a good idea because the grit in the old fluid was all that was providing friction for the clutches.
Had a car years ago drove it for 6 months, never needed topping up with oil, although it was black, I decided to change the oil, it was a bit thick coming out, changed oil, 300 yards and it was knocking like a good un, the old oil, no telling how long it had been in there was what was taking up all the slack in the crank.
Good day Raymond, most of us have loved and lost, just keep on pushing forward and things will change, might not be what we expect, but they will change!!!
I'm so sorry that you and your family have to go through unwanted drama. You've got enough on your plate for now. Also prayers for continued prosperity, as you are a good man, doing good works. Blessings on y'all! 🫶🕊️💞🎭😁
I'm sorry to hear about family difficulties Ray. I've had to deal with such problems many times in my life. I have found it very healthy to treat it like poop on my shoes. Just clean it off and keep on walking with the loved ones whom I can trust and grow with.
My first car (1977 Chevrolet Impala) had a lot of problems that I could not afford to properly repair (often repaired just enough to get it back on the road again, but nothing more), but when the transmission gave out that was all she wrote - it was time to find another beater. Still not well off by current standards, but have a car that is safe to drive and properly maintained (2006 Dodge Grand Caravan).
Our 2006 Toyota Sienna has done about $5k+ in repairs in the past year. Half done at a shop, half I did by myself. It is chugging along at 210K miles and hopefully we reach to 250k before anything more major needs to happen.

hey sir toyota technician here, the orange rtv is factory sealant for transmissions and transfer cases, most of the time its the plug on top of the transmission or sometimes lack there of that is actually leaking and that sketchy shifting of the front wheels while braking and going over bumps is worn out lower control arm bushings. old highlanders and all siennas all have the control arm bushing issue at higher mileage.

I just did a trans service on my 2005 ES330 with 210,000 miles. (Same engine and transmission) I service it every 50 to 60 K miles. It still shifts as new. The real Toyota T-IV transmission fluid is darker red color with a-slightly purple tint than what was observed in the video... i own a 2003 honda odyssey, a year ago the transmission went out on my wife, she was using our van to commute back and fort to work. i had this bright idea to go to pick a part (LKQ) and purchase me a used transmission for 450.00 dollars and paid some one else $ 150,00 to remove it from the odyssey we picked. it took me 3 days to remove the old transmission and install the one we got from pick apart. with all that work my van was up and running again i was realy happy considering it was totally shut down from previous. anyways the wife didnt like it. because it had a slight jerking on the second gear, so finally i bought a rebuild one and its running perfect now. it has been a year. the moral of my story is if you need a transmission or engine do not get it from the junkyard cause theres no telling it will work properly. just get a rebuild one it may cost a little bit more but it only takes one time to install.
A customer should appreciate your advice on cost versus value on a vehicle like this. As you outlined in the video of the options for a used good versus a cheap one and and a remanufactured or new transmission. Then also the other items on the vehicle that would need addressing. Whatever is going on with the suspension is also another item that could be very expensive. I really like your narrations on your videos, both the during repair and explanations of repair options/costs. Thanks for being the tech you are. A bright shining light in the sometimes dim arena of car repair.
I'm glad i maintain my Toys , i have an 06 Sienna close to 200 thou. but its maintained and is like new drive and suspension ! My 04 Camry is same 150 on it ..
I am gonna say some weird internal leak in the valve body that when cold, there is not enough line pressure to close the clutches. That's usually the problem with putting new fluids in a high mileage transmission is that the old burnt fluid had higher viscosity and that's keeping the line pressure high when cold. Once you remove that, everything is leaking and not enough pressure so you start slipping. You probably want to try a bottle of thick Lucas transmission treatment to see if you can get he viscosity back to keep these clutches engaged but it's on borrowed time for sure.
I had a younger brother that was constant problems since he turned 13. My enabling mother didn't help matters. Every ne'r do well in town would cycle through our house all night long. Then there was prison, identity theft of my identity, drugs, stolen stuff, break-ins, it went on and on until he finally OD'd. Life has been very peaceful for the past 16 years.
You mentioned the Pinto. My opinion, the Pinto was a cool car that got a bad rap about its fuel talk location, a problem many cars had in those days, but the Pinto got the flak. I own a 65 Mustang and would love to have a Pinto parked right next to it, drive it in parades, etc.

I’m thinking seeing how many miles are on the car that maybe the transmission was never really serviced and just recently got serviced seeing that the fluid looks clean and new and now the transmission is having issues shifting. The old dirty fluid is probably what was keeping the transmission going.

@@MonkeyJedi99 It's the only sensible way of dealing with things. You MUST NOT buy or maintain your daily drivers emotionally or you'll hemorage money
You got it right at the very end of the video… “End of transmission.”
Glad you are doing better and sorry you folks are going through this. Thanks for all the awesome videos that I always enjoy. Have a fantastic day!!
Hello Ray. Sorry to hear about your nuisance ...
My 59 year old wife has had zero interest in cars let alone car mechanics throughout her life but after watching your channel she is now very disappointed if there is no video to watch at the weekend (rare).
That's the positive impact both you and Lauren are having on the world (we're in 🇬🇧) so keep up the good fight Sir and THANK YOU!
Sorry to hear about your issue. All of your hard work you put into your channel has given both of you something that can never be taken away from you. I go through withdrawals if when I wake up and there is no video posted. You help us non mechanics understand the different workings of the vehicle's and how to repair it. We people appreciate what you and your wife do for us. Keep up the hard work. Will Say some prayers for your family keep up the faith in God he watching over your family. 🙏🙏
You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your relatives.
Hang in there Ray it sucks to see you down ,

Had to do the same thing recently with a family member, but you will find that putting yours and your family's mental health first is a good thing.
Same van as mine with 309k Love the Sienna! I have never ever seen a van so clean! Wisconsin here its all rusted!
Hope life gets back to normal soon. Hang in there.
This vehicle is a good example of fixing problems when they arise and not waiting until they become bigger and bigger and hardly anything works properly anymore
One of the reason I love your channel. It isn’t scripted. Everything on UA-cam seems staged and is scripted
@@johndilloway9762 Then they complain about how much it is to get it fixed....
Always best to reset the adaptive values for the transmission too.
what should I do to prolong the lifespan of valve body ? My van has 274k miles now :D
@@bobhudson6659 he just make a general overview of this minivan model not pointing out the van in the video separately.,
Yeah the U151e in my Lexus was the absolute biggest piece of junk transmission shifting wise.
Hi ray hope you and Lauren are all well keep safe and look after each other you are both a nice couple.
Hey Ray! Glad to hear you're feeling better! No good when you feel like crud... thanks for the update and all the best from Oz.
Good morning Mr Ray hope y'all have a great day, so sorry to hear about your family, y'all hang in there, you and Lauren are strong and can fix anything 😊
You have many, many friends out in the big wide world. Thank you so much for your brilliant content.
I agree with your assessment.
This video illustrates the fact that if you don’t do regular maintenance on a vehicle when it’s due, they will fail, even Toyotas and Hondas.
0:09 I appreciate hearing that! Many channels I follow make things sound 100% all the time!
Prayers for you and your family. Thank you for your never-ending hard work, and great videos.
I love your UA-cam format. Don’t change anything 😊
I am glad you went to correct fluid as a first step. I did get a Honda Accord to shift properly after putting in the correct fluid, but the trans still died a year later.
Hope you resolve the former family issue. Keep positive and things will work out. You have a great family now that stand behind you.
Yeah someone was messing with it.

Ray, I can sympathize with your family situation. We are going through the same thing with our son. Hang in there!
Good morning ray and wife unit awesome video just finished watching on transmission and know how you feel been there on families issues but we moved on and as always you and your families be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Always nice to be with at your shop what ever the job is. Have a nice day Raye
What we do at work is strain transmission fluid through a paint strainer. Works great for inspecting fluid for metal debris!
Rise above it Ray. Stay strong and move forward, their loss not yours 👍🇬🇧😎
It’s very hard when the betrayal comes from within the family. Stay strong my friend, you have a wonderful wife and kids that have your back.
I'm sorry to hear about the family drama. Say no more my good man. Been there and understand. None of our business but at least we can understand where you are coming from. Of course we, as viewers always are concerned when the content drops off.
hey sir toyota technician here, the orange rtv is factory sealant for transmissions and transfer cases, most of the time its the plug on top of the transmission or sometimes lack there of that is actually leaking and that sketchy shifting of the front wheels while braking and going over bumps is worn out lower control arm bushings. old highlanders and all siennas all have the control arm bushing issue at higher mileage.
Amazing how the BG fluid and additive helped
family stuff is oft times the most challenging thanks
Thank you Rainman Ray for this excellent diagnostic and cautionary video. Happy and grateful to see your channel back on my computer. You take care and hang in there. I had an '06 Sienna with 2WD and 170,000 miles. It was well maintained and ran great. I only got rid of it as I wanted something new. Replaced it with a'15 CX-5 which is still going strong.
This Sienna seems all used up. Advise owner to junk it.
hang in there Ray....many families have the same problems....my wife was assaulted twice by a family member and he thought it was appropriate to tell everyone that it didn't happen even though he was in court over it...needless to say he's no longer a family member....its his loss....keep the video's coming....cheers
with cars being so much $$$ a rebuilt trans at $2500 to $3000 might be the way..
My 08 Ford escape v6 is on its 3rd trans first was Warranty as it blew up within a month of me buying it.
Sec was $2,1000 with new CV shafts
Then the 2/4 gear band broke, and that was covered so far running good
I just did a trans service on my 2005 ES330 with 210,000 miles. (Same engine and transmission) I service it every 50 to 60 K miles. It still shifts as new. The real Toyota T-IV transmission fluid is darker red color with a-slightly purple tint than what was observed in the video...
Unfortunately it appears that this vehicle has not had regular and periodic maintenance. BTW the valve cover gaskets are a PITA to replace...
Lucas I have used that for many years and have had awesome results.

i own a 2003 honda odyssey, a year ago the transmission went out on my wife, she was using our van to commute back and fort to work. i had this bright idea to go to pick a part (LKQ) and purchase me a used transmission for 450.00 dollars and paid some one else $ 150,00 to remove it from the odyssey we picked. it took me 3 days to remove the old transmission and install the one we got from pick apart. with all that work my van was up and running again i was realy happy considering it was totally shut down from previous. anyways the wife didnt like it. because it had a slight jerking on the second gear, so finally i bought a rebuild one and its running perfect now. it has been a year. the moral of my story is if you need a transmission or engine do not get it from the junkyard cause theres no telling it will work properly. just get a rebuild one it may cost a little bit more but it only takes one time to install.
"End of transmission". No truer words have been spoken.
Glad your back…. Families are a tough piece of the puzzle…..keep doing you. Cheers
The best thing in life is family, and the worst thing in life is family. Keep your head up and work through it

Your vids are outstanding Ray!!! Much respect from TN. 🍻
I’m thinking seeing how many miles are on the car that maybe the transmission was never really serviced and just recently got serviced seeing that the fluid looks clean and new and now the transmission is having issues shifting. The old dirty fluid is probably what was keeping the transmission going.
