Is anyone going to watch this video about an Icelandic rock band? Let's find out! Also, tell me what other bands/musicians you'd like to see me explore.
I really enjoyed this video. Sigur Ros is an interesting band, I don't really care about lyrics that much in songs anyway so they are right up my alley.
Hey I’m actually an Icelandic Sigur Rós fan so I understand the lyrics to a majority of their songs quite well so your video title actually doesn’t apply to me 😎
I was first exposed to Sigur Ros in 2006. Changed my life. Whenever I listen to Takk, I am reminded of when I first heard it at my college dorm as snow fell down by the window. The majestic cold icy vibes of that album accompanied by a genuine soul that nourishes in the background. It was escapism through music at its apex.
Similar experience here. I was in college when I discovered their album Ágætis byrjun. My fondest memory is when ( ) came out...I drove to college in a snowstorm, but found classes cancelled. I skipped the expressway and took the long, local road home in the snow while ( ) played.
I’ve always related Sigur Rós with wintertime, especially Takk, Ágætis byrjun and ( )… I’m from Iceland, but I started listening to Sigur Rós when I was 17, and I played those albums on repeat the whole winter, which is probably why I make that connection. But I just feel like the dark nights, ice and snow fit perfectly with the music.
Is a native Icelander I can confirm that even they'r song lyrics that are entirely in Icelandic are not to be understood. At least some of them. They use real words and real sentences, but the the text makes no sense and is never about anything particular. One song though, my personal favorite, is Dánarfregnir og jarðarfarir (Death announcements and burial services). That song has no lyrics in it. The opening tunes are actually derived from a well known radio tune from Iceland's national state radio (RÚV). It's a segment called Death announcements and burial services, and in that segment, following that well known tune, a heavy monotone female voice would list people that had recently died and announce when and where burial services would be held. I don't know if they still do these announcements on the radio but I remember them from my childhood in the 90s and 00s.
I've heard from Icelandic people before that Jónsi is generally quite hard to understand, which is why a lot of their songs still don't have full lyrics even after 20 years. Even recent songs like Óveður, native people don't seem to be able to figure out everything that he's saying.
I have often struggled to understand what nearly any lyrical songs say. My brain always pays more attention to sounds over voices. I suppose this is why I most enjoy instrumental or foreign music. So I can fully relate to the feeling of just being "in" the music.
I completely share this with you. Words when they can be understood often just get in the way or corrupt the connection I am making with the music. They are far too specific.
I have heard stories of people becoming so overwhelmed with emotion when they see Sigur Ros perform live, they pass out or collapse. I am a person who feels bigly so i have many years of therapy before i can safely see them live.
I am SCREAMING INSIDE! Sigur Rós is transcendent! subbed! Thank you! Edit: I could not even make it through the 4 minutes of the video without crying. Sigur Rós is just so emotional and tied to an insane time in my life. Not sad crying, just the crying when you are overwhelmed with emotions from a flood of memories.
Funny...I’ve actively avoided knowing what the lyrics meant since I was sure they could not live up to the beauty of the music. Now I know I had nothing to fear :)
Beautiful. Sigur Ros has always been a favorite of mine, one of the bands I can say truly helped me through difficult times, and to this day I still think Heima is the most beautiful musical documentary I've ever seen. I was always fascinated by Hopelandic, I think it's such a great idea to let the sound itself to carry all of the meaning in a song. Great video, and the quote from Shawshank is perfect.
As a singer/musician myself, this is something many of us who write our own music and lyrics do. I didn’t realize that it was a whole “thing”, nor the fact that it’s so common, but it is certainly a dependable way of structuring the vocal melodies and harmonies of a piece, as well as just figuring out exactly how the vocals are going to sit within the song (if that makes any sense lol).
That makes so much sense. The unknown can behold anything. The "vibe" of the video, or the opposite... depending on your mood. Always just thought they are singing in a icelandish
You lost me at "It's complete gibberish". No, it's not that noone understands it. It's the other way around. The point is to have everyone understand. Everyone hears the same thing. There's nothing being hidden from us based on lack of knowledge. We all understand.
That's been my interpretation, too. It doesn't matter who we are, where we live, what nationality we are, or what native languages we speak... We're all on the same page when we listen to Sigur Ros. We all listen as one, and feel as one.
I first was exposed to Sigur Rós through Game of Thrones, when they sang the credits song for the purple wedding. They have a really cool and unique sound.
In my case was the trailer for the 2008 Prince of Persia reboot. It has "Saeglopour" as soundtrack. The imagery and that beautiful piano melody instantly grabed me and i had to look it up. I'm so glad i did
Their liveshows are almost like an out of world experience and honestly the landscape and atmosphere of Iceland combines so well with their music. I was listening to Takk... when I first saw the northern lights (svo hljótt and heysátan, agaetis byrjun afterwards). I will never forget that. Sigur Rós is more than music. It is pure emotion. You don’t just listen to it. You must feel it.
Agaetis Byrjun is one of the most special albums to me of all time. It still makes me cry tears of joy while filling me with such sweet, nostalgic sorrow.
Vaka (Untitled #1) is even more incredible live. The visuals really add to the experience. Too bad they're basically on hiatus. I'd recommend anyone see them live.
A few years ago i stumbled upon Sigur Rós and was entranced. I shared it with my friends and they all found it strange. I'm glad I'm not the only one who appreciates their truly beautiful sound
I might be their number one fan. I’ve been in love with Sigur Ros from the moment I first heard their music. It is ethereal and existential. It transports me from this crude reality to a place I call home but didn’t know existed until Sigur Ros. My soul experiences this music the way a person recognizes themselves when they look in a mirror. I love it!
I’m 16 and me and my dad found Sigur Ros together about 3 years ago and by now have gone to 2 of their concerts, one on my birthday, and they are just magical. I can only describe their beauty in hopelandic, as real words escape me. Their music reaches deep into my soul always and makes me feel in ways I didn’t know I could. My favorite track is ísjaki but I can’t truly choose 1 because it shifts depending on the day or my mood. This band is a staple to any that find it, as there is just nothing like their sound and I doubt there ever will be such raw and powerful emotion displayed in music ever again
The few times I have seen them live I was always enraptured. Sober and smiling with my eyes closed. It was like nothing else. Also loved how they would refuse to do encores. They did their show and walked away. Then would meet fans after shows. Got to have a few drinks with them. Was great
Thank you for bringing more awareness to this amazing group. This group has single handedly shaped my life from a kid with its amazing hopeful sounds and uplifting lyrics
Thank you for featuring sigur ros.they are one of my favorite bands if not the most favorite. It gives me a deeper appreciation and understaning of their music (in a sense)
I love the music of Sigur Ros because it invites you into the depths of your own emotions. Bono once said of Bjork's songwriting that it's easy to write a sad song when you are sad. Writing blissfully happy songs is so much harder, but Bjork does it effortlessly. Sigur Ros's whole catalog is an emotional spectrum journey and hearing them live is the equivalent of having all your cells in your body turn on all at once. I've been to 4 of their concerts and all were unforgettable. If they ever tour near you, just go!
I love the band. It was the first band I really ever fell in love with. After so many years I still come back to their albums and am brought to tears at the beauty. I would have liked this video if it didn't have 666 views; I'm sorry but I couldn't besmirch that. This was a nice reminder of one of my favourite bands. To anyone who hasn't listened to all of their albums, you really need to. And if you have, you understand.
I was introduced to them in 2006 after showing a boyfriend my love for Bjork. Takk was everything to me. I explored so much of their lives at that time..I fell in love with their essence. It illustrated some on the most defining parts of my life. I’m so happy to hear that there was more than me just having this divine connection to gibberish and beauty. I’m baffled that hopelandic isn’t known more about it you listen to the band. I’m happy Jonsi chose to use hopelandic. Jonsi knew that the music they were producing was supposed to resonate with so many hearts and we would all have space to put out own meaning. Sigur Ros has gotten me through many hard times. I’m so grateful.
The music of Sigur Rós has blown me away since the first time I listened to them but another band who's music I love called The Cocteau Twins did the same thing with their vocals although she never ever sang words and she said she was always amazed at the words she'd hear people singing at their concerts.
I first came across this band when I was hanging out with my dad in an old cd store at his hometown (Pelotas/Brazil). As I was looking for something to my liking, I came across this really strange specimen. Just a black album with a picture of what looked like an alien baby. I opened it up and took a look at the booklet, it had some stuff written in a language i couldn't understand or even read. I asked my father if he at least knew the "mascot" in the cover of the album, but he was just as clueless as I was. We tested the CD out but we couldn't really hear anything, so I decided to get another album for myself that day that seemed more to my liking "The Dream Sequencer", which ended up being my favorite album of all time btw. Anyhow, I decided to write down the name of this mysterious band and i was really excited to listen to them when i got home and... Damn, it was something truly special, I never heard anything like them in my life. I have enjoyed many songs by them ever since, but always trying to look for their meaning and sticking to a translation that sounded the most logical to me. Now i'll try to listen to them through this new perspective. Really cool video, thank you for sharing this info in such a concise piece of work
I don’t know why but I actually enjoy the ads at the end of the videos the music and relaxed version of advertisement is just so much less intrusive and in all honesty if every UA-camr would approach sponsorships like this I’d be much more open to what they have to say
At the most basic level...these sort of super well made video essays about something very specific...like a band...make me realize that the idiosyncratic strangeness that is my perception of reality...is in fact shared by others. I was honestly kinda vibing off the fact you not only love Sigur Ros as much as I do....but you love their music for very similar reasons to me. And it's just really cool to hear another human being express my own exact thoughts...but in their own words.
I first heard of Sigur Ros almost ten years ago from The Vampire Diaries of all things, and I've been a massive fan of them ever since for their utter uniqueness and beautiful music; a few months later, my favourite magazine published a piece all about Iceland and its culture. Coincidence? Great vid x
I heard sigur ros for first time ten years ago, when I was on n UA-cam and the page recommends me the video of "voiral ver" and was so amazing to me, cause was the same that I was living that time of my life
Thank you for this video!! I love Sigur Rós for 4 years now and didn't now about the language. I always thought it was sang in icelandic and I didn't search for the lyrics because I love the fact that I can interpret by myself and feel the song with more intensity... That's amazing. Jónsi is amazing!
Mom introduced Sigur Rós to me at a young age through svefn-g-englar, never fails to put me into deep sleep; a nostalgic lullaby to some extent. She told me stories about how she used to listen to svefn whenever she's in a park in Japan, but never told me the meaning, So I did the research myself. Watching the svefn-g-englar music video made me feel some type of way; a sense of hope and calmness that I've never felt before. Seeing sinless souls dance around on a land in Iceland, carefree and gayly, it's captivating. It does have a meaning, but the meaning of this music can be interpreted by the listener.
I went to the Rock and Roll museum in Keflavik when I visited Iceland. There's an exhibition where you can pop a "record" on and put on headphones and music plays while you watch videos and and read from a projector (so terribly described but anyone going to South West Iceland I would recommend this!). Hoppipolla played in the background of this presentation and I got literal shudders and genuinely cried a bit! Proof that it's not just about the lyrics, but music makes us feel something so unexpected and unexplainable
One of the most creative and musical bands of all time. Great to see a video about them in 2020. Olsen Olsen is one of my favorite pieces of music. Scratch that. Agaetis Byrjun is an amazing album
I'm really new to sigur rós I recently discovered it in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in its 13th season finale, I always think about that whenever I hear it it does something truly beautiful to my soul every time I listen to it
I first heard of Sigur Rós almost ten years ago, after watching a football video name "The Butterfly Effect MKB CC8 Winner by ElAlonso" (which I would definitely recommend to any real football fan :). The track playing during the video is Sæglópur. Of course, I don't know any Icelandic, but boy did I wish I knew at that moment. Ever since then I've been following this band, finding a sort of safe haven whenever I feel I need one. I never truly wanted to know what the lyrics meant, but when I read an English translation of Sæglópur I was pleased to learn that almost any interpretation of the song is valid. It's the emotion you feel during listening that counts and to me, that is something truly special about this band which keeps bringing me back and will keep bringing me back until the end. Beautiful video Elk :)
I had the pleasure to experience a live performance by them, either back in 2007 or 2008. They played at the Berkeley Greek Amphitheater, it's an outdoor venue and the whole experience was amazing. Especially during the encore, they played gobbledygook and it started raining and there was a huge drum line. It was a beautiful moment.
I bought the Untitled Album from Ameoba in Los Angeles and hasn't a clue what I had done. I thought it was unfinished work. After listening to the entire album. Enjoy each song a bit more from the last, eventually resetting. I believed they were singing in Icelandic, so how was I suppose to know. I would adlib my own words. Never knowing about, Hopelandic. They're a powerfully inspiring band.
Sigur Ros: We're gonna sing in some made-up gibberish. it will consist of consistent syllables but contain no real meaning, and YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT!!!! Me: Shut Up and Take my Money!!!
Check out Takk and glosoli in order, without pause or interuption between them, both are on the takk album and they are absolutely brilliant played like this. Staralfur is another very good one.
I did not know that! I assumed I just didn't understand the lyrics, but I get it: they are so moving and filled with unspoken passion you couldn't possibly put the emotion into words. Remarkable band.
I suppose you meant that we can't translate it, but I understand it perfectly, as I understand holding someone's hand, watching someone cry, feeling the pain in someone's voice. It's human.
You do understand it. An artist’s/band’s music should make you feel something. I feel like listening to Sigur Ros is like taking DMT or Ayahuasca. You’re transformed into another state of consciousness. Your brain goes into a different place.
I remember being obsessed with Jonsi in 'How to Train your Dragon', then in 'I Bought a Zoo', and then I introduced myself to Sigur Ros. They're awesome!
i love it! i love people who try something new. Island or Iceland is in my opinion the most beautiful country i've been to. one of, if not the most beautiful landscapes i've seen (and i'm born and live in Greenland)
Well from what I’ve read Elizabeth Fraser was really sensitive to the music press criticising her early lyrics, so she intentionally made them a little bit incomprehensible. Cryptic, and often seemingly slurred, or mumbled and bathed in that beautiful wall of sound.
I don't want to sound like Sigur Rós is one of my favorite bands and I have all their albums; but It's one of my favorite bands and I have all their albums... Thanx for reminding me to listen to them in this time when hope is most needed...!!!
whenever i hear this album now i’m always transported back to 6 years ago. i used to smoke joints every night back then with a friend, but my gf at that time didn’t like it. i still went and smoked though, and every night, when i got back home, pleasantly high, i would play this album and look through my gf’s pictures, thinking how lucky i am and how amazing she is.
I first heard this band on some demo video for my gr 9 video editing class. They used Meo Blodnasir. Their music evokes such a strong emotional reaction even with mostly gibberish for lyrics. Love this stuff
So cool to see like minded people on this band. I have been alone with my thoughts on this band since there music departed Iceland. I just stumbled across this on youtube tonight. My wife has made fun of me for 13 years blasting Sigur Ros on occasion LOL. Be well all.
Ever since my brother and me bought the album the day it was released in october 2002, I've known this is the album that will be played from second 1 till after 1hr and 11 minutes just before I'll be cremated. It's just the only one and best album EVER.
They are in my top 3 favorite bands/artists. They are absolutely amazing. Have seen them live couple of times. And I didn't get to know them through some movie or tv show. I absolutely adore them. There are so many excellent songs they have. But one of my all time favourites is ''Viorar Vel Lif Torasa'' that song is like an Angel singing to you for 10 minutes on. I liked this video it's good but I don't really mind not understanding the lyrics,
sigur ros is magical, like iceland, it's the sound of that lands, atleast in my head, also if u like music from there check out kaelan mikla, or low roar but LR is well know thnx to kojima now
Reminds me of why I enjoy music in general in languages I can't understand. I can concentrate on the vocals as a sonic instrument and not be bogged down by the meanings of the words.
"This video is brought to you by audible. I love audible because I live audibooks. I love to listen to them all in languages I don't speak. I love to imagine the books are about something ineffable and beautiful that I'll never understand."
Is anyone going to watch this video about an Icelandic rock band? Let's find out! Also, tell me what other bands/musicians you'd like to see me explore.
It's a much needed inner distance-as-far-as-possible to Covid 19 numbers. Very much appreciated! Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed this video. Sigur Ros is an interesting band, I don't really care about lyrics that much in songs anyway so they are right up my alley.
I'd love to see you explore the music of Aesop Rock - the esoteric rapper with perhaps the largest vocabularies in the entire genre.
Hey I’m actually an Icelandic Sigur Rós fan so I understand the lyrics to a majority of their songs quite well so your video title actually doesn’t apply to me 😎
Glad you enjoyed it!
There’s only one appropriate sentence to express how this video made me feel:
Eeyo tiear ee nah uhoo su ah ca eyn.
How many times can I like this comment??
I agree.
This cracked me up - lmao - that's awesome.
Iuslaulon fai, isou lai.
I’m a simple guy. I see Sigur Rós, I click.

Svefn-g- Englar , every time time I hear this song it does something to me and seriously I can not describe that feeling in words.
Me too. First heard it in Vanilla Sky and ever since it takes me to a reflective somber place.
Great song!
Try with songs like se lest, milano and sægappur. Svef-n-englar was my favorite when i was 17
that song is in icelandic
Transcending?

The world this day and age could use this band to give everyone hope
Sigur Ros' song "Varuo" was the first I've heard, and I was so in awe by their beauty that I inevitably fell into Atmospheric music
The letter ð (capital: Ð) is transcribed as d, so you should've written "Varud".
I love Sigur Ros so much!! Been a huge fan for years!! Great video!!
Thanks!!
That makes so much sense. The unknown can behold anything. The "vibe" of the video, or the opposite... depending on your mood. Always just thought they are singing in a icelandish

Sigur Ros songs are like David Lynch movies; they're left open to interpretation
and both very pretentious

I love the music of Sigur Ros because it invites you into the depths of your own emotions. Bono once said of Bjork's songwriting that it's easy to write a sad song when you are sad. Writing blissfully happy songs is so much harder, but Bjork does it effortlessly. Sigur Ros's whole catalog is an emotional spectrum journey and hearing them live is the equivalent of having all your cells in your body turn on all at once. I've been to 4 of their concerts and all were unforgettable. If they ever tour near you, just go!
A video about an awesome Icelandic Post rock band I adore??? Nice
Glad it’s up your alley!
And if you have, you understand.
unparalleled in their complexity, expressivity, originality. Sigur Ros
I love the comparison to that scene in Shawshank. Awesome video, two of my favourite things Sigur Rós and The Shawshank Redemption!
I’ve been watching for years, and I just realized you did a video on Sigur Rós.
Amazing! I’m just glad it’s not ‘The Day Sigur Rós Died’.
Ive had problems connecting with My feelings, and sigur ros songs help me connect with myself
Really cool video, thank you for sharing this info in such a concise piece of work
I've listened to Sigur Rós for awhile , it is perfect for looking at the sky on dark windy nights, or stormy days.
I don’t know why but I actually enjoy the ads at the end of the videos the music and relaxed version of advertisement is just so much less intrusive and in all honesty if every UA-camr would approach sponsorships like this I’d be much more open to what they have to say
Thanks! Now go get yourself a free audiobook. That helps me get more future sponsors and keep making videos like this.
Thank you for making this, not many people listen to this band but for the people that do this was a very important video :)
One of the most creative and musical bands of all time. Great to see a video about them in 2020. Olsen Olsen is one of my favorite pieces of music. Scratch that. Agaetis Byrjun is an amazing album
BRO STOP I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THE SPELLING OF THIS BAND FOR FIVE YEARS THANK YOU THANK THANK YOU FOR COMMING ON MY RECCOMEDEDSJUAKA
I'm really new to sigur rós I recently discovered it in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in its 13th season finale, I always think about that whenever I hear it it does something truly beautiful to my soul every time I listen to it
I hear "You sat alone with fire" "you saw the light" and I can't unhear it now
Me too!
That song from bracket album is one of my favourites. Instant goosebumps every time. Thanks for this! Greetings from Argentina. Suscribed!!
Greetings, Argentina! Glad to have you on board with the channel. :)
I first heard of Sigur Rós
almost ten years ago, after watching a football video name "The Butterfly Effect MKB CC8 Winner by ElAlonso" (which I would definitely recommend to any real football fan :).
I am British and Sigur Ros is the best band i have seen live to this day there was so many emotions !
Hell yes
I LOVE IT
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY (but actually don't shut up)
ive always loved their song Hoppípolla, i gotta explore their discography more. no other band sounds like them.
Check out Takk and glosoli in order, without pause or interuption between them, both are on the takk album and they are absolutely brilliant played like this. Staralfur is another very good one.
if you love hoppípolla, check "inní mér syngur vitleysingur". It has that same pure joy feel throughout the song.
@@AIPTutorials Probably my favorite song from them. Við spilum endalaust also has the same energy
I would try out the whole of the untitled album from 2002 in which you can get addicted to it like I did
Thank you so very much for making this and sharing. Very beautifully put.
Your brain goes into a different place.
thanks for making this video just got into this band this year and that title made me laugh out loud cos i kniw what it means
Glad you liked it!
I remember being obsessed with Jonsi in 'How to Train your Dragon', then in 'I Bought a Zoo', and then I introduced myself to Sigur Ros. They're awesome!
My favourite band! Thank you so much for spreading their music ❤️
My pleasure!
i love it! i love people who try something new. Island or Iceland is in my opinion the most beautiful country i've been to. one of, if not the most beautiful landscapes i've seen (and i'm born and live in Greenland)
Sigur rós is for me like happily tragic
The Cocteau Twins did something similar, maybe they were inspired by CT
21 year old doomer I was here to see if anyone was going to mention The Cocteau Twins.
Oh definitely
Yess
Magma did it 2 years before the Cocteau Twins formed. Both Sigur Rós and the Cocteau Twins may have been influenced by Kobaïan,
Well from what I’ve read Elizabeth Fraser was really sensitive to the music press criticising her early lyrics, so she intentionally made them a little bit incomprehensible. Cryptic, and often seemingly slurred, or mumbled and bathed in that beautiful wall of sound.
Wish I could go back to these records for the first time. Over-listened to them so much in the mid-late 2000s.
Seen em twice. They are the best! Especially live.
You don't understand Sigur Rós, you feel it
They are in my top 3 favorite bands/artists. I liked this video it's good but I don't really mind not understanding the lyrics,
sigur ros is magical, like iceland, it's the sound of that lands, atleast in my head, also if u like music from there check out kaelan mikla, or low roar but LR is well know thnx to kojima now
It's not about understanding, it's about feelings
Reminds me of why I enjoy music in general in languages I can't understand. I can concentrate on the vocals as a sonic instrument and not be bogged down by the meanings of the words.
I used to listen to this everyday when it came out and I know every single syllable on the album.
Ooh, I really liked this video. A good change of topic.
Thanks!
Damn..
This band should hold a special place in Every persons heart
"This video is brought to you by audible. I love audible because I live audibooks. I love to listen to them all in languages I don't speak. I love to imagine the books are about something ineffable and beautiful that I'll never understand."
Jonsi voice is just another instrument on their tracks, beautiful xx
I fell in love with olsen olsen years ago and still like it to this day .
Long live sigur ros
Been listening to their music for 11 months now :)
