For me he is the finest rock guitarist of all time. I have heard no one else play with the same incredible sense of melody and feel. And yes his very best work was with UFO in the 70s but there was some great stuff with MSG as well, in the 80s, some incredible solos! like on 'Looking for love' - beyond sublime. He will always be the best of the best as far as I am concerned.

I think Schenker was wary of joining bands because of being screwed over by his brother & the business early in his career. The guy was an original not into the fame game who's sound & style was imitated & commercialized for cooperate metal in the 80s & after. That said, Schenker in Motorhead woulda been fuckin KILLER!
Fun Fact: The MOTT THE HOOPLE connection was real, in fact Ian Hunter's son & Schenker's son formed a band called The Audio Cartel in Brooklyn Ny in 2007. I remember the name being out there.

Around the time Michael was asked to join UFO, he was approached by The Rolling Stones management to audition. MIck Taylor had just left the band and they needed someone. My other favorite is Ted Nugent both these guys were so talented and underrated how these 2 guitarist aren’t in the RNRHOF is just unbelievable they were both amazing players !! As far as you asking what we think about Michael joining these 5 bands well if Michael hadn’t already made a name for himself then possibly he may have !! Michael’s career was blossoming in UFO he had written some incredible licks and riffs with them he participated in 1 of the greatest live albums ever recorded “Strangers in the night” it was a shame that Phil Moog punched him because that ended maybe 2 of the best song writers ever collaboration,Michael is going to go down as a great guitarist who many say was their biggest influence !! Depends how you define "great." Michael's approach is definitely more old school (very little to none finger tapping or high speed fretboard masturbation from the genre of Hair Metal), but what he does play is done with finesse, precision & grandeur. Take, for example, his solo on "Desert Song" - - on the surface it is very simple, but the way he delivers makes it a thing of majestic beauty. When he really cuts loose such as his extended solo on live renditions of "Rock Bottom," he can give ANY guitar player you can name a run for their money. And I have never witnessed him give a sloppy live performance or have an "off night" - - I cannot say the same regarding nearly all of my other guitar heroes.

What time period did Michael Schenker play as a member of Ratt? I know that during the late 1980's to early 1990's he enjoyed a modest amount of success by teaming up with Robin Macaulay to record & tour as the Macaulay Schenker Group. I thought those albums were decent but a little too slick for my taste, and they limited his potential by underutilizing his talent. I guess he felt then he needed to adapt to the times by conforming to the more popular & dominant 1980's LA Hair Metal sound, but I think his personal style is much better suited to the heavy classic rock sound of the late 1970's & early 1980's.
