It's pretty amazing that Kubrick has a film in the categories of film noir, satire, historical epic, war, sci-fi and horror and each are considered contenders for top in those categories.
It's fantastic to see more classic B&W films get the 4k HDR treatment. Noir in particular can benefit greatly given the emphasis on shadows and light so I would love to see a ton of Film Noir get restored in 4k and with delicious inky black HDR goodness applied. I have this (And killers Kiss) also in a duel set but it's the UK Arrow Academy version, not the Criterion. I'll keep that for the special features (and as a Blu ray backup) but I'll definitely pick these new KL discs up....as you mentioned Heath they are now the definitive versions and I've been really enjoying what HDR brings to the blafk and white films. The Universal Monster pics in 4k HDR looked great and I can't wait to see more and more classic B&W stuff get restored like this.
Hope you picked up Kino's KILLER'S KISS on 4K UHD. I have it on blu ray from that The Killers Criterion blu ray. The Kino 4K really opens up the detail thanks to HDR!
Just ordered this as well as his other early (pre-SPARTACUS) films from Kino Lorber. I’m very anxious to see these all. When I looked at my film collection I noticed that I have all of his films in 4K except his earlier works. Not sure I’ll get EYE WIDE SHUT if and when it gets a 4K release since I really didn’t care for that one. I’m hoping Criterion does one for BARRY LYNDON but for now the bluray is fine. I really like your reviews since you get right to the point of things and don’t fill your videos with extraneous blather. I don’t know why it took me so long to finally subscribe to your channel!
I just placed my pre-order for “The Killing.” Never seen it, but I’m a loooong-time Kubrick fan (I still remember seeing the original theatrical run of “2001” with my dad in 1968). Yours is the most comprehensive and in-depth coverage of all the UA-camrs I follow who cover films/music/physical media. Keep up the good work!
I just picked up the Criterion blu-ray last week and saw this for the first time. Really great! Killer’s Kiss is included, but I have not checked it out yet.
A GREAT MOVIE ! GETTING BOTH K KISS & KILLING 4K'S TODAY FROM KL ! : ) MARTY (1955) ALSO COMING IN THE ORDER FROM KL. KL IS #1 WITH ME. I'M SURE YOU AGREE.
Black and white films benefit from 4k because the move from 8 to 10 bit color depth widens the grayscale and contrast. Kino's Some Like It Hot was a particularly nice release!
I'm not sure! I am not great with rankings and lists because things are always shifting for me as I watch movies. But I really respect him for multiple reasons, especially that he rarely repeated himself. Definitely an auteur.
Great review!!! I know what you mean about HDR in the Dracula. I love HDR B&W movies. I have two blu ray players , the Panasonic UB 820 and Sony UBP X700 and I’ll watch a citizen Kane in Dolby vision on one and the HD version on the other and you can really see what Dolby vision does to black and white film. I’m so excited to receive my Killing that’s due tomorrow.
Would you mind if I ever questions about certain settings on my tv , there’s some things I don’t understand. I like to be sure I’m getting exactly what the film makers wanted me to get. As far as video quality
Great review Heath, I’d be interested in seeing a video of your top 10 40/50s Film Noir movies. I’m newer to the style and would like some recommendations. Take care ✌🏻
That list would always be changing and I should definitely make that video, but a great place to start with noir are these: Double Indemnity (usually cited as the greatest film noir) Out of the Past The Maltese Falcon Gilda The Lady from Shanghai Detour The Big Sleep Nightmare Alley (original, not remake) Touch of Evil The Killers The Killing The Third Man So many more, but those are the first ones that came to mind and should give you a good overview. I'll keep that video idea in mind, too!
@@CerealAtMidnight Wow thank you so much for the list!! I’m definitely going to spend the weekend watching these. I know Barnes is having their criterion sale at the moment and they have quite a few of these titles, so I definitely want to check them out before the sale ends. Thanks again!! ✌🏻 BTW Will you be reviewing Touch of Evil 4K down the line?
My pleasure! For some reason, I was not sent Touch of Evil to review and I haven’t purchased it yet. It will get reviewed at some point, but I can’t say when.
@@CerealAtMidnight I had seen some where they released both separately, so was confused. At the moment, "Touch of Evil" is the only one i can think of where they released both. Just release both int he same release.

Ordered it a couple of days ago. I need everything Kubrick.
I kind of think 4k UHD HDR is best used on black and white films. Most black and white films I've seen using the HDR look amazing.
One of my favorite noirs. If I didn’t already own the Criterion, I’d be buying it.

Thank you for that compliment, Gary!
Influenced Reservoir Dogs.
I tried to show directly how much of an influence with my photo selections in this video. Influence may be too soft of a word!

I will get both, I had them on laserdisc and I got the criterion ones. Sound's like must haves.
We need some Bogart-films on 4K!

Kubrick is personally my favourite filmmaker of all time. Where does he rank for you? Fellow Aussie here, Love the channel mate. 😅👍

I have the criterion version and it’s a brilliant film

Would love to get this, but $65 on Amazon (to Aus)....
My interest is, indeed, piqued. Question, regarding the Kinos vs the Criterion disc: How do the extras compare?
Great movie. Have the criterion edition. Might have to upgrade.
Excellent movie.
If they had any sense they'd have 2001 special edition box covers
I hate that Kino keeps putting out these 4K releases with no blu-ray.
Per Kino's deal with MGM, if Criterion has released a movie on Blu-ray, Kino Lorber can only release the movie on 4K.
