- What is a Seismic Wave?
What happens if you disturb the water of a calm pond?
Yes exactly!
When you disturb the water, it will continuously produce ripples or waves.
Just like in an earthquake, the sudden movement of the underground rocks produces energy waves that moves the Earth’s surface.
These waves are called Seismic Waves. These waves could travel through and on the surface that cause the shaking and vibrations of the ground.
There are 2 types of Seismic waves: Body waves and Surface Waves.
Basically body waves are waves that travel through the Earth’s inner layer. And while Surface waves are waves that can ONLY travel through the surface layer, making the Body waves travel faster than the surface waves. However, surface waves causes more damage than the body waves.
Now there are 2 types of body waves.
The Primary Waves and the Secondary Waves.

P- primary waves - fastest kind of waves it can move through solid rocks and liquids layers of the earth. Push and pull of the earth movement surface
Secondary waves- slower than p waves it only travels throug.solid rocks and cannot travel to liquid layer of the earth. Sway movement
Hypocenter of earthquake emits not only acoustic P-waves and S-waves, but also generate changes in local electromagnetic fields and could produce standing acoustic waves . Speed of P-waves, that are longitudinal, is about 4.5 times higher than S-waves, that are traverse. Speed of electromagnetic waves, that also could be of 3 types: longitudinal, traverse and standing, is 1 million times faster than speed of S-waves. Hypocenter emits them not only during but prior earthquake.as well.
Thank you sir this a very good explanation . my doubts were all cleared while watching this video. I am from India 🇮🇳.
Thank you Priyanthi. We are so glad to read comments like this as it warm our hearts. 😊
@@EarthPen Namaste🙏🙏🙏
Amazing ❤
Very helpful video! Many thanks
this will help me n my summative test in science
Amazing 😍 information you have
Thank you Sir😊
Very good explanation. I am from INDIA 🇮🇳
Thank you for the compliment brother. We are from Philippines 🇵🇭 .
Thankyou sir for better explanation 🙃
Have a nice day too :)
Great explain through 3d animation
Nice
very interesting
thank you!
Sir Nice teacher it's easy way to learn and write in exam 👍🏻
thankyou
❤❤❤❤
By studying seismic waves from earthquakes,
Thanku sir 😊😊❤❤
This is not physics this is geology
This part is included in physics too...
@@sanskritikesari4646 how?
@@nokia_eq23 This is included in modern physics
Physics solves problems with force and motions isn’t very obvious what seismic waves does ? Because of a force acting caused by different phenomenon there’s a motion too. Just like what my teacher said “ Everyday of our lives we use Physics “ you might not notice it.
waves are physics
Fun fact I have an exam in this video.
I think it is not correct, P waves cause trembling in vertical direction and S waves in horizontal direction.
you are wrong lol
Geography not geology
