If you have a fire wire 400 cable boot the iBook G4 holding down the “t” key. Then connect them together with the firewire cable. Now you can boot the G5 from the iBook’s hard drive.

Those G5's still look modern even by todays standards. The case design was excellent and it was pretty simple layout to work on. It definitely liked to get dusty, but it was pretty easy to clean. When all those fans ramped up to 100% though, it sounded like it was going to take off.

@@WizzRacing Dude really is young, I remember the days of using a 9600 Baud modem on my Commodore 64 dialing into various BBS, and Q-Link back in the late 80's as a kid.
@@CommodoreFan64 Me too.. As I had an old Hayes 2400.. Were talking RS-232 port input. With only one phone jack connection on the modem. Bought PC magazine just to get the BBS 800 phone numbers. That they had in the back...
Spent all weekend calling them. To see what they had.. Also to check if they disabled Control, Break key. As you could bypass the password screen. if they didn't.. Some even provided email service. When email was not even around..
The great thing... I found Global Village Software. It had everything from phone forwarding calls. Answering machine. Fax Forwarding on demand...Were talking 1980''s...The movie War Games come out in 1983.. It was the wild west...
@@WizzRacing As a kid I would read PC Magazine at the grocery store while my mother, or grandmother did their shopping, and I had a small spiral bound notepad, and would write down the numbers, and make other notes, I also would go into the chat room on Q-Link, and get BBS numbers that way as well from helpful users.

This is such a fun video. I love looking back at old Apple products from the 2000's, because we get a look back at how modern Apple's designs were compared to the competition.
I had the 2 processor version of the G5, it was a beast for sure! I also had 2 of the 30" Cinema Displays that cost more than my car at the time.
I've got a dual-socket version of that same generation, and it's missing almost everything that could be removed without a screwdriver (which is a LOT of parts haha)... been wanting to restore it, but some of the brackets and cables and such are basically impossible to find. And getting a Mac compatible graphics card from that era is a stupid waste of money, they're all overpriced on eBay. I'd probably be better off looking for another gutted one and hope it has a few of the parts I'm missing haha. I'm glad it's the air-cooled version at least, the liquid cooled ones do not hold up well over time and are basically impossible to repair to original condition.
Almost 2 decades old and those Apple products are still beautiful by today's standards.

I am glad the iBook G4 was the last item you pulled. I remember using those years ago and loved em. That was the computer that lead me to start moving myself off of Windows XP/Vista and onto mostly Mac PCs. I am excited for your follow up videos on all these items Luke and congratulations. (:
I had a 1.6GHZ G5 and 20” Cinema Display plus an iBook G4. The G5 was the best computer I’ve ever owned. I wish it could have kept up with the times, as nothing Apple has today is as useable and well built as that thing was.

God that Powermac still looks so futuristic and cool, it's unbelievable. Actually the most modern and good looking tower I've ever seen.

3:55 I still have mine from 2004. It was my first music production machine. I use it now as a server and radiator for those chilly Arizona days. 🤔🤨🤦🏾♂️
Connect the iBook to the G5 with a firewire cable. Start the iBook in Target Disk Mode (hold down option-T while starting) then turn on the G5. It will boot, slowly, from the iBook HD. Yo'ull also be able to install the OS from those CDs in the iBook case.
I literally LOLed when Luke picked up the very-strange-and-foreign PHONE CORD (used for the included Dial-up modem) and said "A connector of some sort, I'm not sure what this goes to."
That's the thing that allowed At&T to make billions and billions of dollars doing things much, much worse than many of the complaints of companies today, Luke.

Wow, with cool vintage apple tech today you are walking right down my alley. Would love to see future videos on all the items you mentioned plus, add a G4 Cube and do a side by side comparison using the HD display connected to each system. As a part of my collection, own a 12 inch 1.5 GHz Powerbook G4 from around the same time period and with its silver keys, I never have to worry about any color fading.

I use the same display every day with my Mac Pro 3,1. There is a dvi HDMI converter from ADC. I love the tall screen with extra pixels. I have the original box too for the screen and you can believe it cost more in Canadian dollars! I paid $150 last year from the original owner.
That power Mac was probably 75% of the total weight. Thanks! Great video!

I was starting off a career in 3D animation in 2003. I had learned Alias Maya (before it was bought by Autodesk) and was running it well on a dual Xeon PC. An illustration firm was wanting to hire me to get into 3D animation. While I was being hired, I was asked about what setup they should get. I stated that Maya for the PC was well established: that it had recently been ported to Mac, but getting a PC setup like my workstation and PC version of Maya would be more stable. Turned out their IT person thought he knew better than me and ordered the Power G5 and Maya for Mac. First day trying it, I was really frustrated. Turned out raytrace rendering on it was dreadfully slow (assume some of it was poor porting and limitations of G5 by then). I got so frustrated I started bringing in my own PC workstation to work! Just a story about how software optmization is really important.
Bring them back. I want to sit that beautiful Cinema Display in action!

Just so you know, both the iBook and Power Mac can run Leopard. I would keep the iBook on Tiger though. It's probably a little too slow to run Leopard comfortably. Another thing about the Power Mac is that it needs to have the clear plastic piece installed. There's a sensor inside that will run the fans at 100% or even sometimes prevent the system from booting if the plastic isn't installed. Also, you're lucky that you don't have one of the water cooled models. Yep, Apple was crazy enough to sell a factory water cooled computer, but they were kinda unreliable. The coolant leaks out onto the power supply and shorts it out. Usually just the power supply will blow up, but it can always take out the motherboard and other components too. The case will also rust and corrode like a mofo if the cooling loop leaks and you don't catch it, like if you have one that leaked when in storage.

I owned one of those G5 Power Macs with the Cinema Display as my main set up for quite a while. The connector you unboxed that you were unsure about was just a phone cord. People were still using dial-up internet back then. Though it was reaching the end of its lifespan. Also, I know you found a Tiger install disc, but so you're aware, that computer will run up through Leopard 10.5.8. Although, if you leave it at Tiger, it can also still run Mac OS 9 in the Classic Environment.
Cool to see all of those again. I never had an iPod Nano. I always went for the iPod Classic. It was strange to see the G4 iBook, because I literally just cleaned up one of those to sell. Clearing out old tech. Selling a 12-inch G4 iBook and a 17-inch G5 iMac on eBay right now. No takers yet though. Looking forward to the follow-up videos. :-)
you should use the G5 as one of the background macs for your set. after you get it booted.

@@CommodoreFan64 PowerMac G4 MDDs were actually the ones called wind tunnels! G5s were not so bad compared to those!

Fun fact you could get a G5 with factory liquid cooling.
I'm glad the old one I've been meaning to restore is air-cooled, I've heard the liquid ones universally fail given time and cannot be repaired.

@@WarriorsPhoto I may have heard wrong, my familiarity with vintage Macs is admittedly low. I'll still take blowing out a fan over having to replace any lost liquid or fix leaky seals... It's always been the bane of all similar liquid cooling systems; they are not maintenance-free. Some are better than others certainly.

@@WarriorsPhoto I can only speak to the experience I've had with the 3 AIO units (Asetek, Corsair and a Gigabyte now) I've replaced since those became popular in the last decade. Apple was ahead of the curve there, and the tech has improved over the years but you do need to top them off at best or replace them outright after a few years. It's never a fun job, usually involves removing the motherboard which basically equates to disassemble the whole darn thing in most cases lol
Love it! Get the G5 running! Demo Target Disk Mode and demo some editing on the BEST version of iMovie - HD, 6! Also, max out the ram on the G5, it’s dirt cheap! I have the DP 1.8 and the liquid cooled 2.7, which take 8GB.
Hi Luke, when renovating the G5 please use an SSD, the drive needs to be SATA1 compatible so an old OCZ Vertex SSD or equivalent should work well. The performance difference on these G5s when using an SSD and maxing out the RAM can be quite remarkable 🙂
I have a G5 sitting unused for about 10 years and a Cinema Display.
I still use the display for my MacBook Pro when I work out of my farm shed.
Yes on the 2008 live restoration. I have a 13" 2008 Unibody MacBook. Still working great after a SSD update. Would love to see the inside of the 15"

Not sure if anyone has said this yet about the Cinema Display but you need a special power brick for using it with another device. I actually use that monitor with my laptop and was so thankful to have found someone selling the monitor with the special power brick (it also handles the USB passthrough as well) for $10. It honestly is a great monitor and proudly sits on my desk.

Very generous subscriber! I love how the G5, when taking it apart, is as much art as it is machine. That clear plastic piece just looks so cool. I have a G5, Pro 2,1, and Pro 3,1. Love them all. I'm jealous of that display, though! ;)
Hi Luke, nice little haul! I too have the late 2008 Macbook! Its my pride and joy and yes I too upgraded mine from 2GB Ram to 4GB and swapped out the failing mechanical 160GB hdd to 500GB Fusion drive! It is still my daily driver, however I did once try to upgrade OS X El Capitan to Catalina with DosDudes software but it didn't last very long before it crashed, and I haven't tried to upgrade it again since. I used an old reboot of ElCapitan and although it is a little limiting I survive just great with it. However now that you have one, I would love to see what you do with upgrading with yours! Please please do the Macbook first! Love your videos!

I remember seeing the powermac G5 when it was introduced on a trade show back in 2003. It was on a pedestal in the middle of the booth , with just a. Huge empty space around it. It was impressive to see. This was a big reason I recently bought a Mac Pro 5,1
I got a similar set up with two 233 PPC G5 processors 2 GB ram and two 250 Gig HDs with the same monitor that you got. I paid about $US50. It came with OSX Leopard and Ilife. I still use it to run all my legacy PPC software. It is still usable in 2020! I can't believe these things cost so much when they first came out. If you use it MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE PLASTIC SHIELD before you turn it on.
Pretty impressive they kept those massive apple boxes. I am still trying to find a spot for my studio display box

1997 imac here... probably still works. 4GB hard drive, drawer-loading CD drive definitely doesn't work. now I'm trying to think if I have time this weekend to try it out.
I am working in China around 2000 - 2001 before 911 incident. For the job nature, I was once visited the manufacturing plant of "Foxconn" in Shenzhen. There were around that period assembling iMac for Apple(as well Nokia phone), so I am pretty sure the "Cinema HD Monitor" & "Power G5" were assembled at their plant.
Nice! I've owned 3 Cheese Grater G5s, 4 of those monitors. Wow, this brings me back. I purchased all of them brand new. I think I may still have one of the original mouse and keyboard somewhere... I burned those G5s out. I dug them more than all of the PowerMacs I’ve owned before. I’m still running my 2010 quad-core. Fun! I had two of those MacBooks too.
The really bad thing about the DVI connector is that there is no way to use the monitor with newer Macs & no one ever came out with an adaptor.
I have a 17 inch Cinema display and it will only work with a DVI Mac or Mac Mini or Macbook.
That will be the same video we’ll see in 16years from now for the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. Looking forward to that
Long time viewer first time responder... my top three go to’s for tech info. What an awesome possum collection to get! I’m a user of legacy machines; files, video cards, software,… Oops I mean apps. I need access to files going back to iOS 9. Needless to say I have a very loaded room of Apple tech. And thumbs up 👍 no, 2 👍 up’s. to all the suggestions for videos you made, especially the one for the G5 streaming real time refurbishing. You’re quite the lucky lad to have that to you for. You may not The old enough to have files but me being an old timer have a great loss Not being able to Access them in the programs they were created and yeah… I’m looking at you freehand, pre-Macromedia. If’s be great to recover them. And if indeed an SSD drive would work, I certainly would like to learn that lesson. Anyways great video, awesome possum haul. Well except for the 30 pin lightning connector. Amazing how tech gets shrunk down. Sooner was just molecules… Wait isn’t that something to do with the new apple Silica. Microscopes?

I am late the the party, but I remember those airports for my high school TV production class!! We also had the iMac G3s for our editing stations. All the memories. :)
I felt it when he said that he had never had such an iPod as a kid because the same thing happened to me and when the iPod touch came out I used to buy one of these but after a long time from a friend for half the price because I didn’t have the amount of pocket money.
1920x1080 in 2003 is pretty wild because it's what 4K or 8K is right now.

I own this exact system except mine runs at 2 Ghz. ADC= Apple Display Connector. The ADC looks like a regular DVI but it carries power for the display from the tower. I still use this system for my graphic design hobby.

I have a Power Mac G5 here with a matching Apple Cinema HD Display running OS 10.6 and boy does it take me back to the glory days of the early 2000’s...
I was watching this whole video thinking it just needs an old G4 iBook. I actually have one that has like one crack it and all the packaging that I haven't managed to make myself get rid of. But it won't turn on anymore. I also have that Airport Extreme.
wow. I had the dual processor version of this machine. the only problem was the case was damaged and missing fans. I rigged it up and it actually ran, but sadly have had to make the decision to scrap it out as trying to obtain a case has been all but impossible. seems they rarely survive shipping, good score man. The ibook g4 was another one, they were prone to issues with the GPU, so getting one that's still working is also somewhat rare. it actually took me getting two mainboards before I found one that worked.. but still a good machine when running.
The ultimate apple set up from 2003 would be nice.

I read somewhere a long time ago that peroxide works for yellow faded plastics. Your results may vary, so test it first.

@@dlittlester I've done retrobrighting several times over the years, what works for me is to get a sealed clear tub with a tight locking clear lid that's big enough to fully cover the item you are retro brighting, fill it with a 30/20 mix of liquid peroxide/oxiclean powder, and the rest hot water(not boiling), and set it outside in the sun on a hot day above 80F(best results have been during 95F plus summer days on my concrete back patio) rotating, stirring the piece every hour, or so keeping a check on how it's turning out sometimes it can take 8 or more hours so it's better if you have a place that gets bright sun all day, I've done things like old IBM keyboards, computer cases, mice, etc.. of course this is after giving your parts a good wash in hot soapy water to get them clean as you can, and afterwards once everything is washed again, and dried out, on things like computer cases, and large IBM keyboards I like to wipe them down with light coat of 303 aerospace protectant, you can also use olive oil, but you have to be careful on white plastics as the olive oil can stain the plastic, so that's really better when you are cleaning black plastics.
@@CommodoreFan64 I've been fan of 303 since the 70s. Worked in an RV dealer which took on a line of fibreglass trailers and campers. Every one came with a bottle of 303 and strict instructions to use it twice a year on the shell. Works great on tires too - brings back the black without gooey, sticky and wet looking. Protects from ultraviolet too.
The iBook G4 Install disc wont do much for you for the G5. The discs only work with the machines that they shipped with. Also, Leopard is a much more useable OS that was the last officially supported operating system for the PPC architecture. I definitely suggest getting a copy of that instead.

if you have a firewire 400 cable you can use the ibook to boot the PowerMac using firewire and holding "T" for target disk mode on the laptop and then holding "OPTION" on the PowerMac to choose the ibook's HD to boot from. It will be sorta slow ( ibook hd is 5400 rpm ) but it will work.
I was watching the bonus content on a James Bond bly ray the other day and they showed the films being remastered using hundreds of these G5 Mac Pros. They said they were so good they ordered hundreds more. I bet a Mac Studio could outperform 100 G5s now.

the wire is to connect the modem to a landline. The other G5 to Mac Pro difference is the Mac Pro had 2 DVD bays where the G5 had only 1. The easiest way to tell really.

I watched a movie yesterday called 'Ice Twisters' which had a room full of Mac gear in one scene. Not surprisingly, the movie was made in 2000.or thereabouts.
