  • The most incredible #tornado footage ever captured by drone near Greenfield, Iowa with up-close helical suction vortex action. This tornado was very strong and damaged many windmills along its path and also struck the community of Greenfield. Team Dominator intercepted this tornado.

Hard to put anything on anyone when it comes to tornadoes. A drone ain't gonna do anything to prevent warning the people, probably help the community know what direction it's going.

@@peppergrand1072 It's not that it's flat, it's a clear view of multiple vortexes all working together to form this monster. We are also seeing the power of this beast as it rips apart everything in its path from a totally different view point. The power to rip down wind turbines like they are drinking straws. The brief moment when the drone shows the winds flowing into the tornado, it's all new because it's from a new perspective.

Although I've watched a lot of fantastic tornado videos starting way back in the very early 90s , I have never witnessed the consistent, persistent structure of multiple vorticity exhibited here. When it hits the field, the contrast between the dirt being sucked up and the whiteness of the condensation funnel within each of the multiple vortexes is one of the most dramatic things I have ever seen. Mr Timmer, you are one of the luckiest chasers alive to have witnessed this and gotten such dramatic footage using the drone.

I've been a trained spotter and storm photographer for a long time and a tornado/severe weather enthusiast even longer. I've seen a lot of tornado footage and plenty in person... I've never seen a clear air multi-vortex tornado like this. The vortices aren't dancing around a main funnel, they seem to be braided around it. Very different. This is excellent footage, and it'll probably go down in history as helping research tornadoes. I'd love to see somebody putting info in to get a computer to simulate that one haha. That's beautiful but textbook "violent." The 2024 storm season will be remembered for a long long time.

There were so many vortices inside this beast at one point, I couldn't count them all. By the time it slammed into the tiny town of Greenfield, IA, (pop. 2000), the houses it hit were pulverized, trees were stripped of limbs and debarked, vehicles were tossed around like toys.
Anyone hit directly by this tornado would not survive, unless below ground. The good news is we were expecting this weather for days.

you ever see a tornado suck up a pile of coal and blot out the sky?
ever seen a damaged natural gas pipe?
ever seen any building in the direct path of a tornado?
there isn't much difference between all other cases and renewables...except that renewables are not all or nothing. that is to say, if a few get destroyed or damaged, it doesn't stop the rest from being able to produce.
they already have safety in mind, notice how the turbines do not rotate or freely spin. that is because there are breaks that are engaged to stop that from happening (likely the reason you see a few failed because the angle of the wind on the blade created too much force and it bent the tower).
the walls of those turbines are anywhere from 1-2+ inches thick steel. it isn't something easy to just bend over. it takes a lot of power to do that and that's what this storm had, a lot of power. they could make them even thicker sure but is it even worth that investment? i don't think it is, it's not a common enough issue and the impact of a tower going down doesn't really endanger anyone (they are built quite far away from people).

There's so much to look at here. You can see what seems to be how the center of the tornado spins the air around it from the bottom at ground level more then anywhere else along it's height; as is evident by the twist (wrapping around the center) of all the outer vortexes. Like a planetary gear setup at ground level, right in front of you instead of hidden! And the air moving toward the tornado looks faster at ground level then anywhere else, the fields show the directional flow so well here. I'm kind of a laymen for tornadoes, but I think what's going on is kinda hard to miss, which is ultra rare if I understand correctly. Fantastic work getting these pictures!

I've never seen those wind fields in such definition before.
It gives so much perspective on other tornado videos such as the one in El Reno for just how active the area surrounding the tornado is, and to see the windmill seemingly disintegrate far outside the funnel due to the sheer power of the wind is humbling. Also means that those stormchasers filming tornadic winds around them may actually be way closer to danger than they realise.
    Incredible footage.

It's a wind turbine, not a windmill, and it's designed for something in the neighborhood (I don't know what class these are) of 155 mph of wind from the side while parked, plus a safety factor. And it failed.

    • @shaunagordon4104
      @shaunagordon4104 11 днів тому +2

@@ljfinger There are a few different reports on the rating of this tornado from at least EF3 up even to EF5. From the looks of the damage (and other reports calling it "violent," which is a technical term), I'm guessing at least a borderline EF3-4, putting wind speeds in the neighborhood of 165mph. The ones clocking higher wind speeds seem to be from sensors around 600ft above the ground, but that also means the tops of the turbines are enduring speeds around 185mph, if the tornado was "only" a top end EF3. You can even see the blades feathering the way they're meant to, until the body buckles from the sheer force of the wind. The fact that neighboring turbines withstood it means the safety factors worked, but the tornado just overwhelmed that one.

A 5lb drone poses no imminent threat to life or safety of anyone or anything around it, and if you're talking about the safety of the operator, you'd have to then do a risk assessment on the last 100+ years of storm chasers; of which only one single storm out of the thousands documented since the start resulted in the fatalities of any chasers.
