Hey all - it's been two years. I figured I'd jump on here and update everyone on this project guitar Jeff tricked out for me. It's still awesome! Fun as heck as I'm developing my slide skills. Sound is great. Durability is great. Electronics are great. If I had it to do all over again, I'd do it all over again! Thanks again, Jeff. Keep rockin'. And I'm kicking around the idea of another hot-rodded Jim Dandy!

Hey My brother…! How the heck have you been?? I hope you and yours are doing fine and you are having a good summer …🙏🏻🙏🏻I’m glad to hear your guitar is holding up….😹👍🏻 They redesigned the bridge on the Gretsch, Jim Dandy Guitar I don’t think they like me modifying them ….😹😹. Stay in touch and keep on rock’in and roll’in …🎶🎸 great to hear from you…!
Your friend in sweet home Alabama Prof. Jeff 🎶🪕🎸🎻🪕
@@iplaymytele Yeah I wondered about that with the new bridge. Should still be some good options for you. Honestly, the tuners and electronics upgrades you do are worth it, though the dobro tailpieces is also very groovy.
@@wowshadowsedge …
I’ve been thinking about buying one just to see how much modification I can do to it believe it or not ….😹😹😹
Nice work!! Sounds great, too!
😃 Thank You...!
Jeff, I'm amazed that Gretsch don't hire you for hot rod mod designs for their guitars because you make them 100% more cool.
Ha Ha Ha…😹 Art , My Friend…, you would be surprised how much I hear those same words from other people….!😁
Thank you so much for your kind words and I hope all is well with you and your family over in England across the great pond….
Hey Art my granddaughter wants to know what time it is in England ….???
@@iplaymytele Hi Jeff right now it's 9.45 on a nice summer evening on the south coast of England. We went jet skiing today in Torquay beach..my brother just turned 12 and it was my Birthday last week. we just had a BBQ and it was epic : )
Thankyou for your wishes and the same to you and your Family..My Granny is a bit better after losing my Grandad last year and we all miss him very much. My Brother Noah just said for your Granddaughter to look at a map of England..we're on the Jurassic coast and it's super and a bit piratic as it was back in the day
I hope you and all those you love are having an amazing summer Jeff..lots of best regards..Arthur

The granddaughter that asked what time it was will be 15 years old in December...!
My other granddaughter is 11 years old...! She asked me that question about the time I think it was around 12:30 or one just past noon..., she said do you know what time it is in England right now Papa ....? , and I told her I wasn’t sure without checking with Google ....! Then she said it’s like( 1 o’clock in the morning ) so she was way off......ha ha ha, Then Calli and I went cruising around Town on the Harley, right after I asked you that question about the time....! 🎶🇺🇸👍🎼
Sounds incredible man. Wow
Thank you So much my friend…! 🙏🏻🎵🎸
Great Job.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I hope you are having a great weekend….🎶👍🏻🎸

I think Damon Will really enjoy his new Blue 🔥 Hot Rod Jim Dandy....🎶
What's the point of the tail piece? It already has a bridge ......it's for looks i guess.....otherwise a pointless mod imo.......looks cool though ...the whole guitar looks cool ....
The tailpiece takes the pressure off the top of the guitar…👍🏻
It also seems to add to the sustain …🎼🎼🎼👍🏻
Thanks for commenting …🙏🏻🎸 Jeff
It’s a WAY BETTER “electric guitar” than it is an acoustic. Gonna have to do this mod if one ever becomes apart of of my guitar harem
There ya go Dan….👍🏻🎵
You won’t be sorry Friend…🎵🎸👍🏻
HI jeff. Nice mod! I checked out the new jim dandy and they have changed the bridge to pegs. Do you know if the tail stock mod will still be possible with this change?
I have not seen one in person Yet... so I'm Not Sure...?? I Will Research This ... Jeff🤔
I don’t understand why the customer wanted the tail-piece installed as I don’t see any reason why , it doesn’t seem to have any function other than looking like it needs a functional tailpiece which I don’t see that being the case in this case. Please correct me if I’m wrong or missed something or misunderstood something. Thanks.
In my humble opinion... I know it takes the stress off of the top of this little guitar , and have found it does help with sustain...
Hi! Do you ground the electronics to the tailpiece or do you find that it isn’t needed? Are these the cheap Amazon/aliexpress pre wired pickups and electronics?
You don’t really have to ground the strings or the tailpiece on this set up there is no Hum per se…!
Have a good one …! friend Jeff
I’m definitely getting a JD. Upgraded sounds cool. Great job.
Wish you were local.
I’m not brave enough to drill lol 👋🤠🎵
😹😹😹 Sounds Like a Plan...🎶👍🎶
Jeff Galey iplaymytele@gmail.com
Another great build! by the way, have you ever considered using a trapeze tailpiece for these guitars instead of the resonator type? I got one of these jim dandy's and want to put a trapeze tailpiece on it because I like the look better than a resonator tailpiece.
Yes I Have…🎶 but so Many of the trapeze Style tailpieces, are way too long and will not fit in the small distance on the Jim Dandy Guitar this is why I use the Dobro Tailpiece…👀 The very First one I did in fact the tail piece was off of a old arch top harmony Guitar..!
But it looked like it was the same style as a dobro tail piece.. It was just completely rusted no chrome left on it at all…! I’m going to do a video of that guitar …👍🏻 it was the first one I did I believe it was around 2013 or so…! If you find a trapeze tail piece that will fit in that distance just make sure where it screws onto your guitar will fit properly where the strap button is….👍🏻🎶. Jeff🎸🎻🪕🎤🎓
@@iplaymytele thanks for your reply! I've seen on the web of folks putting short trapeze tailpieces on their jim dandy's. Some have a diamond shape on them. They look spiffy! Ideally if get a tailpiece like the old silvertone flattops but I would want it newer and more robust and widely available so if one needs replacing i can easily grab another.
@@SuperMikefun
Sounds like a plan..! I don’t worry about these tail pieces buzzing or flopping around that’s for sure….👍🏻🎶
Great work! I was almost tempted to buy a Jim Dandy, but I prefer a nut width of 45 to 46 mm, and a JD is around 43 as far as I remember.
Thank you So Very Much…! Being a Professional player and teacher most of my life ( 68 Years ) , about the only nuT width Size I have trouble Playing is Still some of the Very Very Smallest..! One I remember was…, a 60’s Model Gretsch Country gentlemen …!
The Neck and Nut were So small it made playing the most common cords extremely uncomfortable I don’t care how expensive the guitar or how rare it was….! But All of the standard sizes even my Old Guitane D-500 Gypsy jazz guitar, has a Pretty Wide Nut..!
And I believe the width of that particular guitar has actually help me play Smaller Necks and Nuts…! I believe I have around 25 or 28 guitars…??? They all seam to be very Playable….🎶. I Just Purchased a NEW Gretsch ( 2627T Triple Pickup Streamliner with a Vibrato,
In Whiskey Stain Single barrel ) that has probably one of the most perfect comfortable playing Necks I personally have ever played…! )
And over all these years believe me I can’t think of too many guitars that I have not owned and played on stage with…!
Have a great day your friend in Sweet home Alabama Jeff Galey…🎶🙏🏻👍🏻
Are does Grover 502 CK Roto Grip tuners. They look like the 502 CK. I think you did a fantastic job of customization. The choice of hardware was brilliant. The sound coming out of the sound hole is both warm and bright. I want to add the Grover tuners to my Jim Dandy would like to know if I got the right model number for the Grovers. Really, great job.😮
😀 I Will check the model for you...! Then get back to you... Jeff
Hey Jeff, I purchased a Jim Dandy a while back in Frontier Stain, because I loved your videos!
I’m wanting to modify mine with a permanently installed single coil, with the volume and tone control like you’ve got. Do you recommend a specific brand?
Thank you so much for watching the Jeff Galey channel...👍🙏🎶
You can purchase pre-wired Stratocaster style pick up Kits on Amazon... , and if you like you can change The generic strat replacement pick up for a higher quality DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan pick up... Nice Work! What kind of tailpiece is that? I have a Gin Rickey and would love to add that as I don't care for the way the strings feed through the back of the bridge. Thanks
😀 thanks broskie...! Its a Dobro tailpiece ..! you can get them on Amazon...Jeff
This is actually sick, and it sounds great, too. Well done!
Thanks ...🙏
I appreciate the kind words ....! , have a good Sunday...Jeff..🎶🎻🎸🎹🎤🎓
Sick?? It just came from the ‘doctor’,dummy.
Do you think it would be possible to change the strings and thus be able to adapt it for a left-handed player
absolutely...! My Son Is a lefty...and that is just what I did for Him...!😄
@@iplaymytele thanks !!! 🙏🙏🙏
Hello! Can you tell me the size of the screw for installing the bridge? and what diameter was the hole drilled with?
I just used a half inch silver wood screw…🎶👍🏻
Man, that guitar really looks and sounds amazing. Did you have to lower the bridge when you put the tailpiece on? I just bought a new JD today and the bridge seems pretty high. Thanks!
How are you this evening..?
I did not have to lower the bridge saddle at all... Everything is the same except the strings will hook into the new tailpiece to take the tension off of the bridge itself....👍 have a great weekend ..! your friend Jeff Galey 🎶🎸🎤🎻🎹🎸🎤🎼
@@iplaymytele Thanks Jeff! I'm going to be looking for a tailpiece for my new JD next week. You make a JD a whole new guitar! You're really making a good guitar even so much better!!
@@ambu6478 …I think you will Love the Looks and added Sustain …!
Keep on rocking my friend…! Your friend in Sweet home, Alabama…Jeff ❤️🎻🪕🎹🎸🎼
Electric strings on an acoustic? May I ask why? Very nice job. Looks and sounds great.
Because…, The pick ups that are installed on these guitars are ( magnetic ) pick ups…! Acoustic guitar strings have too much bronze and not enough steel in them to produce a good electrical current when vibrating over the top of the pick up…. So they do not work very well with a standard electric guitar magnetic pick up … The electric strings also are easy to bend when playing blues and lead lines…🎶If you use 11 / 48 on these Little guitars after modification they are fun to play and they are easy on the fingers also…
Jeff 🎻🪕🎸🎹🎓
i dont get it why they dont sell a model with pickups and tailpiece already...i know the gin rickey model but doesnt have the tailpiece...thanks for the video. i love it.
thanks Have a Great Weekend....!
Do you put anything between the tailgate and the body of the guitar, or is just metal against wood?
no right on the wood
Got it rotomatic keys
😄 Pretty sure that is correct....
Hey Jeff, I put a "in sound hole" pickup in my Jim Dandy and when I'm playing without the amp, it seems like the acoustic sound is muffled. Almost like the guitar top wasn't vibrating as much as it was originally. Have you ever had that happen in any of your builds? I used a different pickup and it may be a lot heavier than the ones you use.
What Pickup did you put in it…??
The DeArmond Woody has Those Foam Things on each end … I always thought they would dampen the tops vibration…
A magnetic pick up as you know, does not use any of the tops vibration for the sound it reproduces ….
These little guitars really don’t have much of a top to vibrate …😹👍🏻 thanks for Watching… Your Friend Jeff 🇺🇸🎶👍🏻🎸
is the dolbro safe for this guitar? the wood is soft to begin with, curious with the tail piece now allowing the strings to push down on the bridge and body, rather than pull up on the bridge. I want to add one to mine but the lowest humidity i can get in my home where i live even with a dehumidifier is about 51%
there is a good Solid Block of wood in the end of these guitars...! The wood is Not That Soft... These Guitars are actually pretty thick...This is One reason for them not really having very good sustain, to began with ... The Pull of the strings with the tailpiece , Will keep the Strings from pulling up the top of the guitar , and this is a Good Thing..! It is Humid as all Hell here in Alabama...!!
and In 30 some years of living here I have never had it do anything to Strength of any Axe... I did Play a "Outside Gig" as The House Band here for around 3 Year's, At a LARGE Motorcycle resort, called ( 29 Dreams ).. and the hot humid weather.. did Peel the faint and finish off of my red ( Joe Galser ) B Bender Tele... It Did the same To My Bass Players Bass..!! Have at it You cant Hurt these Little Guitars... The finish is a Epoxy of some kind... Have a Great Week Friend Jeff...
curious if you could put nylon ball strings on ? intrested what it would sound like
The Jim Dandy has a very dense body and it is small...., The nylon strings most likely ( would not sound good ) or make very much noise...! You would probably have to cut the nut wider to compensate for the width of the string also....
Of course nylon strings would not be able to be picked up by a magnetic pick up.....! This is just my humble opinion...🎶🎵🙏👍
Jeff, I just found your channel and love the mods. Just bought a JD and am going to add that exact tailpiece.(Amazon for about $14 in chrome, gold, or black). I don't have access to a grinder, could I just put the strap button in the hole for the tailpiece. I'm replacing the button, too. Also, what would be your opinion on running the strings over the bottom of the bridge, rather than through the holes? Thanks. Just subbed.
😃Very Cool ! You Will Need more pressure on the bridge... This is why I Run Them Through Bridge..., The Strap Button Hole Does nit line up with the tail piece.. You can move the button down...! Have a Great Week Jeff...
@@iplaymytele Thans, Jeff. Look forward to new content.
😃@@ltgray2780 Heck Yeah... Have a Great week...! Jeff
which pickup is used bridge or neck?
That is a Vintage 63 Seymour Duncan...! ( NECK ) 😍
Dude that pretty bad ass. They sell one like this with a pickup already installed, not sure the exact model, but it's about the same size as the Jim Dandy. Your mod turned out killer.

@@clayc124
The headstock has got to be drilled out both sides..! And if you do not use a non-progressive twist step bit it will more than likely break the headstock...🙄 any progressive twist bit will pull itself into the wood and split the hole... this is why I use a non-progressive twist step Bit ...🎵👍🎶

@@iplaymytele Does the tailpiece effect the string tension?
@@JeffMcDonoughMusic ...
Hey Jeff how are you this evening...? The tail piece does not affect the string tension....! It does however increase the stain and it takes the ( String Pull ) off of the top of the guitar...!
