    Well I finally decided to go ahead and do a how to video....!
    One of my fiddle and mandolin students of many many years, Miss Tracy Jones , has told me on several occasions that she wanted one of my Hot Rod Gretsch Jim Dandy guitars...!
    She finally expressed her feelings to her husband Frank, who came to visit me about a week and a half ago and told me he wanted to purchase one of these guitars for Tracy for her birthday.....🙏❤️👍👍❤️🙏 Soooooooo.... I Decided it was time to do a step by step Video On ( how I modify Jim dandy guitars ) , to make them into acoustic electric guitars.....!
    Have a Great Weekend...! Prof Jeff 🎵🎸🎶🎻🎼🎹🎶🎸🎵🎤🎵🎻🎓

    Gretsch/Fender really hit it out of the park with these. I have never heard a better facsimile of the "old delta blues record tone". They sound great are hugely affordable and are such a wonderful platform to customize. I have the Gin Rickey myself but they are near enough as makes no odds.

    I had a gin Rickey but it had some manufacturers defects and I had to send it back. When I went to the store they only had Jim dandy. (for those who don't know, the gin Rickey is essentially the same guitar, with the gretsch Deltolux pickup pre installed. They told me they were going to trash the old broken one so I kept the pickup. 😬 They are great soumding guitars in my opinion. Really cool to see someone really go balls to the wall upgrading them. Might have to copy some of these upgrades. 🙏🤘❤️🔥🔥😎

He purchased this Gin Ricky, and after a couple weeks gave me a phone call and said he he does not like the sound of it at all…! Instead of sending it back he told me what he would like to try to have me do to it…! I will be making a video of the process this guitar is going to be so freaking cool hopefully it will be done by next weekend and I will put up a video good luck with your upgrades….! @iplaymytele  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you Gareth ...🙏
      The knob spacing depends on how high up or how low you put the volume Pots....! There is not a whole lot of room inside of these little guitars... The closer you put the volume pots to the edge of the guitar the braces are spaced a little further apart....!
      I also put the pots a little closer together on this guitar because they were not the chicken head knobs that actually needed the room...

    I have also heard a common mod on these is to put in a new nut and saddle, Tusq ones usually, as they just come with a cheaper plastic one, but not only for that, but string spacing. The one thing I find with most of these out of the box is they do not have the best set up for strumming, as they are more bluesy style guitars that sound better fingerpicked or with a slide.

    • @iplaymytele
      @iplaymytele  2 роки тому +3

      I don’t mess with the Nut ,Unless... the string action is high or uncomfortable at the Nut.... I Personally do not have a problem with the String Spacing....? So far the distance and action has been very consistent on these guitars ...! 🎶 The only time I will change the nut is if it is actually really cheap..! I assume you own one of these guitars...🎵👍🎶 I pull the bridge saddle out of Jim Dandy’s and Gin Ricky’s all the time and replace the bridge with a “brass saddle” , ( Only If I Am Installing a Bigsby Vibrato ) and when I take the bridge saddle out of these guitars I have always noticed it is a Good quality “Fake bone” Saddle that Never breaks or crumbles upon removal....! This is How I Tell the Quality of the nut or saddle...! A lot of times when you remove the bridge saddle they are so cheap they will break just from taking them out of the guitar...! After purchasing probably 35 or 45 of these guitars since they first were released, I have honestly never changed ( one Nut ) for any reason 🎶😹👍 But yes I do change the nut on some Less Expensive guitars when they have a very cheap looking cheesy white plastic saddle , but I found the stock nut and bridge saddle on these guitars to actually be pretty freakin good for Strumming or Lead work as you can see in most of my Videos about Jim Dandy’s or Gin Ricky’s ...❤️ but changing the nut and bridge saddle in any guitar is a very common modification this actually has to do with the owners preference of how he wants the guitar to play...🎵👍 I just have not run into anybody who did not like the way these guitars played or had trouble making chords or had high action ( Yet ) ...🙏 You know that old saying “ if it ain’t broken don’t fix it...!”
      The modifications I do to these guitars are new modifications , I’m not really changing any existing parts on the guitar ....
      ( Other Than Nice Keys ) , I am just adding new parts to the guitar....! I hope you’re having a good week so far thank you for your comments I love to hear from everybody..🎵❤️🎶👍 Your Friend Jeff 🎓

    Or just buy the Gretsch G9250E Gin Rickey...

      I personally have owned seven, of the Gretsch Jim dandy guitars , I think they are a great little guitar….🎼❤️🎶👍🏻 You don’t have to do anything to any guitar….! But , the Turners that come on the Jim dandy are. ( Cheap…! ) Many of the the students that I have had and still have , own Stock Jim Dandy’s…! I found from personal experience , of getting to Set up and play play so many Jim Dandy’s, some Jim dandy’s ( right out of the box ), the cheap stock open back Tuners , ( occasionally had Keys you could hardly turn…!!! ) Over The years I have probably purchased 20 to 25 Gretsch Jim Dandy’s…. For Students and myself not including the ones I have Hot Rodded ….! The Gin Ricky is OK …..! ( but has no volume or tone control….! ) The pick up is also not as hot as the Strat pick up that I install….! The reason I install the tailpiece is for “sustain, and the tailpiece also takes relief, off the top of the guitar….! “
      The keys are personal preference ….! When I install new keys on anybody’s guitar I asked the customer what kind of keys they want…..! On this particular guitar they wanted gold Grover imperials so that’s what they got…..! I can install any kind or style you like ….🎼🙏🏻🎶. Personally I believe aesthetic beauty is in the eye of the beholder….! Would you not agree….? The Gin Ricky is a ( fine little guitar ) if you are just wanting a Jim Dandy with a no frills pick-up in it…! I hope you have a Great day…..🎶🙏🏻🎶.

      How are you Sir…?🎶
      This is a Good Question….??? As we know 90% of the sound we hear from a magnetic pick up is not from the Guitar anyhow….!
      This is just a fact ….., you can mount a pick up on a ( 1”h x 2”w x 32”L Board ) with the ( right bridge ) , with ( proper pick up height ) ,and your sustain and Tone won’t be hindered…..! I have built several Cigarbox guitars… All I can tell you is to try it out and see for your self …., I would think there would be no noticeable change in the stain or the tone of the guitar….! I think most of the added sustain I am getting from these Jim Dandy guitars, is actually transferred through the screw on the end of the Dobro Tailpiece….!
      My biggest reason for installing the tail piece , is being able to use any string gauge on this guitar without the Tension pulling the bridge off of Top of the Guitar…. On some semi hollow and hollow body guitar‘s there is a piece of filth underneath the Bigsby tail piece anyhow….! I say go for it….! Your Friend Prof. Jeff 🎶🎸🎼🪕🎻 🎓

      @@iplaymytele thats exactly my reasoning for wanting to add the tailpiece as well, in the store the display model already had the bridge coming off the guitar, and to avoid I figured the tailpiece would change that. I will not be installing a pickup at this moment on the guitar, so hopefully including the protective felt between the dobro itself and the guitars body doesnt dampen the sound, however the trade off of getting a few more years out of the guitar itself without the risk of the bridge popping off would be worth a slight dampened tone. I also plan to use Ernie Ball Earthwood phosphor bronze alloy Light strings on it to hopefully not lift the dobro off the soundboard which would creating a lesser angle from bridge to anchor point which may happen if I used heavier strings (I think). The reason we swap out the keys in the first place is to get a smoother more accurate key….! Sealed individual keys at least the ones made by a reputable companies, have much higher ratios…! The String post shaft runs inside of a lubricated housing and is locked into place by the feral nut on top of the key…! Tuning is just more consistent this is why ….! I find most all guitars use a sealed key anymore….! “ BUT …!” To give the ( Jim Dandy ) a retro look and keep the cost down , this is one of the things on the Jim dandy I do not care for is the keys…!!! I have a Dirty 37 Recording King (it was cheaper than the Gretsch, but similar). It is a surprisingly good guitar, good sound, low action, well made, very light. The 43 mm at the nut is narrow for my taste, but there doesn't seem to be much alternative, unless maybe (?) you buy an expensive vintage instrument. Also 'Coppers and Brass', guitar music by the Scottish Guitarist Dick Gauaghan, both great records (both on You Tube, though unfortunately YT in its wisdom has stopped us saving videos). Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, greetings, from Kent in England to Sweet H Alabama.

      @@iplaymytele Good morning Prof. Galey. Thank you for your reply and I hope all is well with you and your circle. Here it's 50 F with a sludge grey sky, though I like the winter, not beyond Feb though. I briefly scanned some of your videos, you obviously have a great love for this wonderful instrument, in all its magnificent variety, and it really comes through. And you're not afraid to reimagine it, hotrod as you describe it. And the bike ( the only bike I ever had was the ex- German BSA Bantam). As you know, the electric g took root too in England through American influenced beat groups and Leo Fender, for whom we also give thanks, (you are lucky to have video of your own😁). Which produced great guitarists (Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, David Gilmour, Peter Green, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler, John McLaughlin, David Kossoff, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, John Martyn, Julian Bream, and many others.
      Not to mention the honorary Brit and daddy of them all (together with Elvis, obviously dear to you, and Bobby) Jimi - I saw a terrific set in December '67 in London, whiich gives away my age, but hey ho. You are quite a master yourself (Sultans of Swing, which I first heard on a pub juke box). Also a nice version of Summertime, which invites a great variety of stylistic reinterpretations, jazz, funk, busking (the great Holloway Brothers busking in Cambridge on You Tube), Janis, Ella, etc. I also admire your teaching, those young men playing Walk Don't Run have a bright future ahead of them, with luck. So. Please keep making the videos, so we can all enjoy your renaisssance style output. Have a safe and festive Christmas, best wishes from across the great pond, Jonathan (must get back to my scales. Have just taken up the piano again, Yamaha keyboard, neglected since school days with my snuff-taking teacher - we remember these things, as your students will remember you).

      A very happy birthday to you also...! Tell your uncle to watch the video because you cannot use regular drill bits on this guitar body in particular he will have to use ( step bits...! ) , like I have shown in the video ....! Most Step Drills, do not have a ( progressive twist ) , a progressive twist drill bit for some reason in this particular WOOD , just shatters the Wood smithereens....!!! And we wouldn’t want your new birthday guitar to have holes in it that we’re not meant to be there....😹😹👍 thanks for watching and subscribing....!

      Nope…, Don’t have to…!
      No Buzz Or Hum…! Just ground your pick up to the volume Pot , ground the volume Pot , to the tone Pot, and of course your output jack will be grounded ….! ( you do not ground the strings or the bridge or the saddle or the tail piece…..! )

    • @iplaymytele
      @iplaymytele  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks for the kind words…
      Years ago I put a old tailpiece on one of my Jim dandy’s, and found out it ( increase the sustain incredibly it also takes all the top pressure off of the guitar), so the string pressure is not pulling on the bridge….! But the main purpose is for the” sustain increase “…. The pick up is actually a
      ( Stratocaster style pick up ) , with a 250K tone pot and a 250K volume pot … There is a .03 µF capacitor on the tone…, The gin Ricky pick up has No Tone control the pick up on this guitar can be raised and lowered For, Tone and Volume balance…..!

    Did you have to adjust your saddle or change guages of string?

    • @iplaymytele

      So far I have not had to cut the saddle down on any of the guitars I have done…. Are usually always adjust the truss rod a little bit to get the action as close as I can… are usually will run acoustic 10 through 48 strings if I am using acoustic guitar strings if I put electric guitar strings on it I will usually run 10 through 46 … have a good Fourth of July your friend Professor Jeff…🎶🎹🎼🎸🎶🎻🪕🎶🎸🎓
