Solar is the obvious next step after getting an EV. Tesla is smart for pushing solar now that there are hundreds of thousands of Tesla owners who are ready for the next thing.

The next thing is solar on the roof of the Tesla to act as a range extender or even to power the car as SunPowers outdoor roof 5' X 3.5' panles are 400 watts.

I would like to express a word of caution on the Tesla brand of solar, there systems are what we call a tier 3 system, it’s going to end up costing more in the long run then just buying a tier 1 solar system, due to 10/12 year warranty’s on very expensive parts.

About 12 years ago my husband installed solar panels on our house. We live in Hawaii, electricity is very expensive, we used to pay $600.00 to $650.00 a month. We also have net metering. We make more power than we use. So our electric bill is about $19.00 a month, that is the minimum to be connected to the net. I bought a model 3 almost 2 years ago and only charge it at home. So far we are still paying the minimum. my old car used premium fuel, and my monthly gas bill used to be about $350.00. I don't understand all the tech, but I think it's been the best investment we made.Love your videos i'm still not used to auto pilot, but your videos help.Thank You

@@DirtyTesla Yep that was another reason I wanted to just pull the trigger now. Talked to a rep and when purchased with solar, Tesla drops the price a bit directly, and they also qualify for the tax credit. Purchasing later on without solar means they don't qualify and you pay Tesla the full price instead of the bundle discount. Ends up being ~$6k now vs ~$11k after.

In SD our EV Time Of Use plan makes it beneficial to send the energy back during day and charge M3 at night. It also gives some ROI to the power walls as we run off the batteries during the peak rates. It sounds like your electricity is much cheaper than ours.

We've had solar since last July, although DTE wouldn't let us activate it until late September after their "blessing." It's been awesome. We used to have electric bills consistently between $250-300/month, and even topped $300 on a number of occasions. Our last few bills have been between $40 and $55. My Model 3 is set up on a dedicated meter so it technically can't pull from the solar system (directly) but since my panels often push power out to the grid, the Tesla is likely consuming those sun-fired amperes.

Well done video demonstration. Wish I had your App. Installing a solar system is a good move for most homeowners. Our solar was installed one year ago (northern Illinois). It's half the size of yours (6.825 kW), but produces all the energy we need (note: we use natural gas for heating). With net metering I export as much energy as I can to the grid during the day when demand and wholesale electric rates are high, and pull energy from the grid at night when demand and rates are low (to charge my Model 3 and air condition the house).
BTW, last year's 30% federal tax credit was reduced to 26% this year, and will drop to 22% in 2021. Anyone contemplating doing solar should do so while federal and possible state incentives are still in place.

We charge our car completely off grid, no power line coming in. We wait around 8:00am on a sunny day for the battery voltage to increase a bit and start charging our model 3. Around 9:30 am the panels get full sun and the battery voltage on my house bank increases then I'll set the car to 12-14 amps taking about 3kW from my inverter and leaving some for the well pump etc.. on a good day we can charge about 140km of range
... we don't want to draw off our batteries without the sun on the panels.. this way we can go from 93% SOC to 100%SOC daily. All "free"
Our system is saddly not Tesla's.
    20x 270watt panels = 5400w
    24x 2v1450amp/hr @ 20hrs = 69.600kWh of capacity.
Definitely want powerwalls instead. But they are too costly if you only look at capacity.

We have a 5-bedroom house, a plug in hybrid (BMW330e) and Model 3 Performance. We have had the system for 6 months and have net exported 2 MWh. I usually try to charge when it is sunny, but there are always times when a cloud passes over and it will be then charging from the filthy grid here in Victoria, Australia (mostly brown coal). I am about to get a Zappi 2 3-phase charger delivered. I have been very happy with the Zappi and leave on eco+, which maximises charging from solar, over the sunnier months. This time of year, I just fast charge because there is not enough left over to charge the car after using solar for the house + Powerwall battery.

Question: Michigan resident here. Would a Tesla Powerwall (if available) have made financial sense in any realistic scenario? Of course you get backup capability, but with that aside, it seems like net metering makes the Powerwall not make much financial sense. Where I live in MI heat and most appliances are gas, so there's less advantage from solar unless you spend upfront to convert everything to electric.

    • @DirtyTesla
      @DirtyTesla  4 роки тому +1

Because dte pays less for your solar generation than you pay them to use the grid, the powerwall does have a small financial benefit... • @keithharrington8715

Make sure you understand your local utility policies on net metering.
Some places are required to buy all you make, so your system can be a money maker.
Some only give you a credit for what you give them over what you use. So, if every day your make/use chart shows you send back 1 kw over what you use you are selling or giving them electricity. They give you a 1 kw per day credit. If the credit is not used in one year you gave them free power.

Curious to know if your electric rate is on time of use (or TOU) and if so, what rate and time. My electric provider is SCE (Southern California Edison) and I currently have Time of use EV prime, which means that super off-peak happens between 8 am to 4 pm, exactly when the sun is shining and on-peak happens between 4 pm to 9 pm, which is mostly at night. Because they credit you based off from the time of use, it makes no sense to back feed to the grid during the cheap off-peak hour and then consumes when on-peak start and sun is not shining. Imagine back-feeding 3 hours worth of energy for the equivalent of 1 hour of on-peak hour use, so I'm looking into getting the Powerwall so that I can back feed during on-peak. Do you have Powerwall for your home?

I have WEEnergies and am grandfathered in until 2024 , I'm on Time of Use Approx 19 cents per kwh from 8 am to 8 pm and .08868 cents per kwh from 8 pm to 8 am also on weekends . I belive that will drop to somewhere around 3 or 4 cents per kwh when my grandfathered in ends. The power company also raised the monthly fee ( Facilities charge) for being hooked up and made me put on a second meter for the solar that they charge me monthly for also. I'm also leaning toward getting a powerwall . Right now in Wisconsin you can't even get one yet.

The snow isn't much of a problem, it doesn't snow that much and when it does, it just slides off within a day or so unless it's below maybe 5F, then it can stick around. The bigger problem in winter is simply less time with the sun being up, and WAY more cloud cover. Like it's been clouds for 4 days straight this week.

I usually bank kW with the electric company on days that I do not charge my Tesla. I am wondering if I can buy a few panels just to charge my Tesla and arrange it to where it is DC current going straight into the Tesla from the panels. This would minimize power loss from the panels as there is not a conversation to AC and then back to DC to while charging the battery. The loss is probably negligible with DC to AC to DC conversion but if I had dedicated panels for charging my Tesla I would prefer a DC to DC flow of power to my car.

I just had a Tesla 7.2kW and single power wall installed mid-Oct 2022. I’m in the Calif Bay Area. I have gas heat and electric AC. Hot days are over, so, I haven’t seen how AC use affects everything. I own a Model 3 LR. PTO is not enabled yet.
It’s able to provide electrical power to the house off solar and power wall. The power wall kicks in about an hour before sun down. Solar generally starts charging the power wall and provides full power to the house about an hour after sunrise. My panels are on a South facing roof
This works even on cloudy days
I draw about 60% of the power wall overnight. Usually, the solar panels completely recharge the panels as well as provide full power to the house in 3-4 hours. By noon or 1pm, they just provide power to the house. It can’t push to the grid until PTO is approved
On most days, I can add 20-30% to my Model 3 LR. I do set the amps to 17-18 and wait until the power wall is completely charged. This is enough range for me most days.

In Michigan, the system is set up in a way so throughout the year, you generate more than you use. So in the summer, we do a lot of over production to cover the grey winters.
As far as snow goes, you can push it off (there are really long tools you can buy for this). It also slides off very easily, and once even a bit of sun can hit the panels, they warm quick and snow will melt/slide that way.
