I love chord progression analysis videos. Doing it on my own often feels like I'm droning over the changes but this just feels to me like having a conversation trying to find insight into the sound of the tune. Love the vids, keep it up!
This is my first one like this! Glad you enjoyed it.
Scott, thanx you for your work and videos. So helpful, easy and informative.
I have always wondered what scales to go with each chord. This video solved the problem that bothered me for a very long time.
Glad that I could help!
Thanks Again Scott
The best lesson for saxophone is yours cheers
Thank you!
Excellent. This helps a lot
Just perfect
fantastic analysis. Thank you!!
Thanks Ryan!
Brilliant vid!! Do you have any more of these chord analysis videos??
I am a bassist, but this helps me a lot. Thank you :D
👍👍
Awesome explanation and easy to follow!
👍👍👍
You are a generous man
Thank you..
Thanks! 👍👍👍👍 how about the blues scales and diminshed? It would be awesome to have the top 25 jazz jam tunes with videos like this
Excellent 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!
Really been enjoying your videos lately. I keep on wondering how to get that microphone sound? Also how to memorize complicated phrases? Trying to take the step from melody memorization to solo memo.
Thank you Scott. Keep up the good work
Thanks Michael!
I am a saxophone beginner and i will like to get a practical routine step by step highlighted for me most especially for gospel music to ease by practise
I'm new to this and had no idea how to use a lead sheet, it finally makes some sense Thanks. One question, I assume all the non-melody instruments use the same chord progression - if so, how do you determine whether to play the chords in quarter, eighth or other notes - so with Amaj7, would I assume 1/8 notes and and play the 4 note chord twice or 1/4 notes and play it once per measure?
This helped a lot! Thanks. I just have to learn 10 standards in a few weeks and doesn't have time to analysis thoroughly everything. The ideas here can be easily adapted for each and every song!
Yeah, once you figure out the structure and the symbols going from tune to tune gets a lot easier.
great video
Thanks!
Scott this is your best one yet. You May thing this we should all ready know but we have to learn it. I have iRealpro and having trouble
With it. I think it is out of tune with backing track, isn’t the track in tun with you. I have it set up right iReal pro has been GREAT with
Help in Customer Service. Thanks Tom
With iReal Pro make sure you have it switched to Eb or Bb for alto/tenor in transposing instruments. Otherwise the default is C, and all the chords will be wrong for sax.
yeah man
👍👍
Sorry, I only speak English.
Excellent tutorial Scott 👍
Thanks Jay!
Nice presentation. Rather than a major II though, I think the B7 in the bridge functions as a secondary dominant to the E7, even with the ii7 before it. Meaningless except in terms of analysis, but that's what theory nerds do.
hi
why B7b5 instead of B7#11 ? thank you the 5 stays in the scale right ? thank you ... nice video
Because that's the chord that Billy Strayhorn wrote 😁 You'd have to ask him. However, if you write a B7#11 you would still have the 5th in the chord and then it wouldn't sound like the second chord in Take The A Train. The #11 and the b5 are not interchangeable. Even though they are the same note, they get there by altering different scale degrees.
Scott you mentioned irealpro I’ve been looking at it, does it play songs with the notes and melody like these backing books?...
Hey Tom, no it's just the backing track with the chords. It looks exactly like the chart in the video. For the melody, you'd either need to learn it buy ear, or find a chart for it somewhere. They would have to pay copyrights for all the tunes if they offered the melody too.
Scott,
You're doing good videos. The effort to do them well is obvious. So I would like to make a suggestion to make them better...even easier to follow and spend time with. (I noticed a comment that said you don't have to shout.) You may be projecting too much for this situation. Video is quite intimate compared to a classroom or a big room without a microphone. So I'd suggest relaxing and pretending the camera is a friend in the room with you. You know your subject. Make it more conversational...as dynamics in music make it 3 dimensional and render it more interesting, so will your video be warmer and well...better. You are going to gain a lot of followers, but perhaps even faster. Toward the end of your A-Train video your voice dropped in volume and it made an impact. Hope you consider this comment as constructive.
Hey Josh, thanks for the insight. I never realized I was "shouting" until the person wrote that in the comments. In the video I just did on long tones I made a conscious effort to talk a little softer. I have a pretty loud voice and project naturally, so I need to work on that a bit. I also talk very fast, which is a struggle with the videos also. Thanks for the tips.
Did you edit this chord chart in ireal, cause mine starts with A6 and uses B7#11 when transposed to Eb, so should i change change it to Amaj7 too
Yes, iReal has some crazy changes to it. I use the changes from the original real book (the illegal one).
the first line you are playing a C major 7 chord. is this just because sax is in Bb? The note names I would think wouldn't change between instruments though.
A Train has similar chords to I Can’t Get Started
Got a link to a very basic understanding of improving.
hey man, im a beginner just to be sure, the notes i play with the saxophone aren't right in this key you're showing or am i crazy, the first chord doesnt match ?
IReal pro has the second chord, B7b5 as B7#11 which I think are the same, but why written that way? Just confused!
iReal and the Real Book have the chords written a little differently. You'll find that pretty often with jazz standards. There are a lot of different arrangements of the changes (adding or taking away harmony). I changed it so it fit the way I've always played it with the B7b5 (The B7 #11 is essentially the same thing... a #11 is the same note as a b5 in this case they are both F naturals).
the originial is in C major i believe , even tho it doesn't matter.
The original is in C concert which is A on the alto saxophone.
Thank you for shouting ;) I leave in France so I am am really far from you 😂
😅😂 Yeah, I've gotten a little better at talking on mic over the years.
Scott, thank you for your video, very instructing, can you tell me again the name of the app you mentioned?
Jose Nicolas Aponte iReal Pro
It's called iReal Pro it's an app for you cell phone that plays backing tracks for tons of songs. Once you get it download the free jazz standard pack and you'll have about 1300 tunes with chord changes that you can change into any style and any key. It's an amazing app!
quit screaming at me, imagine being this guys neighbor!
Haha!! Yes, I was talking a little tooooo loud in my early videos. 🤣😂🤣
@@ScottPaddock thanks for the progression and explaining the notes of those jazzy chords (us banjo players have very sensitive hearing)
@@banjoboy01 us saxophone players are use to being loud 🤣😂🎷
What saxophone is that? what set up have u got? it sounds cool.
It's in the description.
