@@studioonetutorials Those are the words of the prior person who posted. By "drop function" he is referring to the drop-down menu located to the left of your track where you should select the external keyboard to use for input. So after you create the connection using "New Keyboard" in the "External Devices" menu, you will also need to select that input for your track, using the "Instrument Input" drop-down menu.

Nice video Lucas. I've set up Studio One 6.5 to do just this and it all works as described except that Sudio One only transmits note on/off and pitch bend, but not CC controllers such as sustain, modulation, etc. I've verified using the MIDI monitor. Do you know why this is the case? I can't seem to find an answer.
I have the mpk mini mk3. I add it using the preset. Thanks to your video I know how to record using my key board, but I can only hear what I hit when I play back the recording.

Excellent Video. The one thing that I still cant find is how to use my keyboard to record other sounds using the Studio One Instruments. For example, I want to use the PreSonus Impact drum kit, the default kit. How do I set up the options on my keyboard/controller? Thank you.
Thanks Lukas, I've done identically with a Yamaha YC61, still no success on getting any sounds out from the YC61. Danke, freut mich!
Great video and explanations. Thanks.. I saw you have the Moog Sub 37 in S1, which I had some troubles setting up correctly. Not sure if I could use the Subsequent editor effectively as an Instrument or need to use as an FX 2 record automations, since automation messages are sent both through the editor and the S1 keyboard and instrument. And how to setup the S1 instrument and Subsequent Editor for it. Like filtering options, midi channels, clock sync, etc.. Some help would be appreciated, or maybe you could even make a video going through your settings for it, since there seems to really be no videos out for setting up a Moog with S1. 😉

Lucas do you have any videos explaining how to program a midi track to control an external device like a line 6 helix or similar . I know the coding for helix but clueless how to program in studio one
Indeed, I have. Do did not mention which kind of MIDI events your Helix etc. expects but most likely it's MIDI CCs and program changes. Here's a video that shows how to send program changes and create presets for the single hardware patches: ua-cam.com/video/Nred7IiyNX8/v-deo.html For MIDI CCs, you can just add a new automation parameter in the automation lanes.
I would like to use physical faders to add sounds (VSTs) to the normal sound of my midi guitar for LIVE & NOT STUDIO. I have been told that I must use an on-stage DAW with Studio One. Thank You Kindly
Excellent, many thanks! I use my Roland Fantom X6 to play sounds, so just as an Instrument. What is the best way to send patch changes to it from Studio One? And is there a way of having all the Fantom's patches information stored in S1 so I can select changes from a list? (Cakewalk/Sonar has such a facility). Thanks!
Ty, this was helpful. I struggle with this every time. Please do one for controllers as well. Q; when you route out midi to your keys, how does S1 hear the sound, as midi does not contain sound?
Hey Lukas, vielen Dank - sehr hilfreich.
Hi. Great, very useful video, Just Subscribed. I have a question. I just installed my studio one 6, works fine except 2 things. There is a very annoying hissing background noise and I cant get rid of it. The other thing, how can I use the virtual instrument plug ins. I drag them into the track, but I am actually not able to play the virtual instruments, just the actual sound of my digital piano. The piano audio connected using audiobox 96. So do I need a midi controller to play on the virtual instruments, or can I use the digital piano? Do i need midi connection for this? Thank you, Tom
Good video- have a question for anyone here: using my Keystep 37 to control synths both external and VSTs. Works great say when controlling my Typhon (Inst setup on MIDI 16), but when I select another device it plays the Typhon still. Is there a way to have it play only the track/Inst selected at the time?
Thanks for the video. But how can I select the sound bank on your Nord from Studio one? Is there any midi manager like in Cubase so I would be a ble to choose the patch I want to be sounded?
Hello. Thank you for your great content. I have a question. I have a Yamaha DGX-670 Keyboard and i want to use the sounds from my keyboard instead of Presonus VST's and i did the setup as you did in the last part. I recorded a track of a piano and i added another track wanted to play some strings but now what i recorded with my piano plays with the string sound :( How can i separate each track to have it's own instrument?
I have my minilouge xd setup. I can see the midi triggers going into Studio One and I can see my 2i2 Interface receiving sound from the minilouge into its Inputs, but the sound is not making it to my audio out.
Thank you for the very helpful video. One thing seems illogical to me or I'm probably making a mistake in my thinking. For keyboards it is recorded that they “receive” something, for instruments that they “send” something. Logically it would be the other way around. Keyboards send to the instrument and instruments receive from keyboards. What logical error am I making or what are “send” and “receive” meant in Studio One?
Got it! 🙂
This was very informative. I have 3 Korg Keyboards and have been struggling with how to record them without using the VSt's. I will try to add my Kronos as a keyboard for input and as an instrument for output. I am using Studio One Version 6. I typically play using combis rather than plain piano/organ patches. Will this affect the setup in any way?
Thank you very much for this information. I have an AKAI MidiMix that I use with S1 and I would love for the indicator lights for the REC and MUTE buttons to illuminate when activated. I've searched for a solution, but do not find anything. Do you have any insight if this is possible?
If the MidiMix does not use one of the standard protocols (MCU for example) for transport control, I don't think it's easily possible without writing a scripting layer for the device.
I use Roland Fantom synthesizer, record the MIDI track in Studio one, use the tone in Fantom, and then save the DAW project. Next time I open the project, how to automatically correspond to each track in the synthesizer.@@studioonetutorials
Unfortunately i still havent gotten it to work with my Roland Fantom 06, ive added and removed it numerous times as both instrument and keyboard with no luck. It finds it when adding a track, but wont show up as midi to be able to view it in keys in order to fix mistakes
On the new instrument window there is also an option "recieve from" that you havent explain. I know its not important in the average scenario but what does this do? Is it the same as the instrument input found on the track but you set it as a default?
It's needed for bidirectional usage of automation. If you have an external synth and you tweak some knobs (effect parameters etc.), this can be used to get the automation into Studio One. A rather unusual scenario considering most people use virtual instruments anyway.
thanks BUT....i have a digital piano, no extra knobs or control buttons. I want to assign unused keys at the top and bottom of the range like they were buttons. How to do that in Studio one?
@@studioonetutorials thanks for the quick reply. I was doing that exact thing with LOGIC for PC back in 2000. I had a small midi keyboard in the vocal booth and assigned keys to trigger Stop, Record, REW, del, next track, etc. I'm shocked I can't set this up today in 2023??

Hey man, hi, thanks for your video! I'm having a connection issue between my new Mininova and Studio One, and I can't seem to find a solution. Can I reach out to you via email or another method?
Is there any way for S1 to remember which patch to play on the external synth? In other DAWs you would send sysex data from the synth to the DAW and then back when you load the project. Is there really no way to do this? Seems absolutely crucial for work with external analogue synths and VA's.
Yes you can use Sound Variation lists for that. I'm going to do a dedicated video on that but for now take a look at this one: ua-cam.com/video/WIhAsqHX6ZI/v-deo.html
and im here a month later and havent seen any answer to my concern. my issue is in the sent area. you had to enter a new instrument then chose an item in the RECEIVE. but how did that option get there in the first place? I try to connect my alesis 8.1. i do that but the only option in the RECEIVE area is my faderport16. at a loss still after a month
It lists all available MIDI devices. If your Alesis 8.1 does not show up there, it's not recognized by your OS. You either have to install a driver, check the USB connection... or if it's an older device without USB MIDI, you need to use your audio interface MIDI port.
I was struggling with setting up my external synths. You explained it better than any other video I've seen.

Here's a video that shows how to send program changes and create presets for the single hardware patches:
ua-cam.com/video/Nred7IiyNX8/v-deo.html
For MIDI CCs, you can just add a new automation parameter in the automation lanes.
Great tutorial, now I have it as I want it😅
I would like to use physical faders to add sounds (VSTs) to the normal sound of my midi guitar for LIVE & NOT STUDIO. I have been told that I must use an on-stage DAW with Studio One.
Thank You Kindly
For an MPC One would you add keyboard and instrument also? Thanks
If it's an instrument (generates sound) and not only a controller, then yes.
@@studioonetutorials great channel, thanks!
Thanks!
I think you already found the right video :) I hope it helps!
Ty, this was helpful. I struggle with this every time. Please do one for controllers as well. Q; when you route out midi to your keys, how does S1 hear the sound, as midi does not contain sound?
You can add an Aux channel to the instrument (if using a device that actually produces sound) ua-cam.com/video/JfdUtczw4rI/v-deo.html
Thank you 🙏
Hey Lukas, vielen Dank - sehr hilfreich.
Yes, the easiest way is to create Sound Variation maps.

Thank you!
How do you sync the midi clock - so the arpegiator tempo in the midi controller matches the tempo in Studio One?
Thank you for the very helpful video. One thing seems illogical to me or I'm probably making a mistake in my thinking. For keyboards it is recorded that they “receive” something, for instruments that they “send” something. Logically it would be the other way around. Keyboards send to the instrument and instruments receive from keyboards. What logical error am I making or what are “send” and “receive” meant in Studio One?
Got it! 🙂
hi nice channel new sub.. Lukas how can change a song to 432hz on studio one professional.. no videos about with studio one on utube
This was very informative. I have 3 Korg Keyboards and have been struggling with how to record them without using the VSt's. I will try to add my Kronos as a keyboard for input and as an instrument for output. I am using Studio One Version 6. I typically play using combis rather than plain piano/organ patches. Will this affect the setup in any way?
will do.
Perfect Thanks!
Thank you.
I do not understand :)
I use Roland Fantom synthesizer, record the MIDI track in Studio one, use the tone in Fantom, and then save the DAW project. Next time I open the project, how to automatically correspond to each track in the synthesizer.@@studioonetutorials
Would this work for Studio one 5 as well?
Yes, totally!
@@studioonetutorials Thanks!
Is it possible to use pads on my Akai mini in artist version?
thanks BUT....i have a digital piano, no extra knobs or control buttons. I want to assign unused keys at the top and bottom of the range like they were buttons. How to do that in Studio one?
That's not possible so far - only with really advanced workarounds.
Lukas, I have a motu 128 to get most midi gear together, a few usb devices, Komplete Audio6 and a StudioLive 16 USB mixer. Do you have one or more videos to help me route PreSonus pc to moto+usb, other pc midi intfc to either use mixer or a seperate PreSonus laptop to usb mixer. I play, record and playback. Its a jungle in here. Thanks!
Thanks Lukas 👌
How do I connect a Faderport 6 to control modulation and expression of my Spitfire audio sound library. Which settings do I need to do and how to use LEARN function. I am struggling with this . Any help is appreciated.
I'm going to do a dedicated video on that but for now take a look at this one:
ua-cam.com/video/WIhAsqHX6ZI/v-deo.html
and im here a month later and havent seen any answer to my concern. my issue is in the sent area. you had to enter a new instrument then chose an item in the RECEIVE. but how did that option get there in the first place? I try to connect my alesis 8.1. i do that but the only option in the RECEIVE area is my faderport16. at a loss still after a month
It lists all available MIDI devices. If your Alesis 8.1 does not show up there, it's not recognized by your OS. You either have to install a driver, check the USB connection... or if it's an older device without USB MIDI, you need to use your audio interface MIDI port.
@@studioonetutorials I apologize. I did realize that, after I posted. Issues with my interface, not S1.
Again, my apologies
