I was struggling with setting up my external synths. You explained it better than anyone I've seen.
Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate it.
This was extremely helpful! Was driving me crazy trying to control my Moog Subsequent 37 with my KEYSTEP PRO sequencer from within Studio One for recording. Didn't realize you needed 2 separate instances of the Sub37 ( instrument & keyboard )! Thanks!!!!
You are a mind reader! I"m digging in now. And... your first 'LIKE'!
ABSOLUTELY crystal clear explanation of what can be a very confusing subject. THANK YOU!!!!
This is by far the best explanation on this. Been searching for this, thank you !!
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank you Lucas Iam so happpy 🎉❤ we just subscribed
I’m new to Studio 1. You skillfully explained critical information about setting up midi devices. This video is going to save me from enduring hours of frustration figuring things out. Thank you!
I'm glad you found it helpful!! Cheers, Lukas
Struggling to figure this out so I needed this. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Very helpful! I often wondered why my hardware keyboard would not play even though I had selected them to send and receive. Now I know! Thanks again!.
Thank you so much for this informative video. I've been struggling getting my Akai mpd218 hooked up and didn't realize I needed to have it as a keyboard not an instrument or controller alone..I did what you said and it worked!!! Keep up the good work brother.
Great explanations and delivery of knowledge. Thank you
Great video, many thanks, i too like others needed this walk through
Simple and concise. You got my subscription!
for 2 weeks I have been trying to get my midi keyboard to work as an input device. It was working before, but I must have touched something to cause the problem. but I don't know what. after 50 or more vidios, I came across yours. problem solved. why, because you included what appeared to be an incidental procedure. the instrument track has a drop function for input and output for the instrument here laid my problem. and here was the solution. Thank you for a well laid out informative how to tutorial. most 3rd party tutorials are weak on the subject, constantly tajking around subject and confusing. you were right the mark the whole time. thank you again, I leard something today.
Hey, that's great. Glad you found it helpful! If you'd like to support my channel, I'd appreciate it if you'd subscribe (and click the bell icon if you'd like to receive notifications for new Studio One videos).
I still have no output from my midi keyboard, and I don't know what or where you referred to as " the instrument track has a drop function for input and output for the instrument". Please specify where this setting is located. Many thanks
@@clembisto6654 Drop function? No output from your MIDI keyboard? I don't really know what you are reffering to here. Where did I mention that?
@@studioonetutorials Those are the words of the prior person who posted. By "drop function" he is referring to the drop-down menu located to the left of your track where you should select the external keyboard to use for input. So after you create the connection using "New Keyboard" in the "External Devices" menu, you will also need to select that input for your track, using the "Instrument Input" drop-down menu.
@@DrPatrickEhlenOkay, yes. So this is what I've shown at 7:20.
Thanks Man. Cleared up a lot for me. Just subscribed.
Brilliant. Im new to S1 and I couldnt work out all the details on this. Thank you.
Excellent explanation!!
I would NOT have been able to do this without your video. You are the absolute best! Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words!! Glad to hear you found it helpful!
very helpful, thanks a lot
This was extremely helpful! I finally understand how to add an instrument properly. I'm surprised nobody else has documented this is well as you have. Thank you!
Great. I'm glad you found it useful!
Excellent thank you!
Brilliant! TY😊
Thanks for the video very helpful
Fantastic! Now I have my Jupiter-50 set up in a way that is much more useful to me while using StudioOne 6. Thank you!
Thank you for this...i was so confused coming from cubase ... this explains it.
I have just purchased Studio One and have keyboards that I need to set up. Your video was clear and concise. It should help me a lot when I finally get to that point. Thank you again for agreat instructional video.
Hello! Thank you very much for teaching. I'm going crazy because I couldn't figure out the solution. But thanks to you, I was enlightened. So thank you very much Sensei.
Thank you 🙏
OMG 7:18 For something so simple I could not figure out for the life of me why the input was not showing and drum machine was not working. All I had to do was expand the track control zoom. Thank you so much!!!!
This was just what I was looking for, now I will go and set up my external instruments. Thanks a lot :-I
Unfortunally, I have nothing else than my external sound card (Presonus studio 24 c) to choose from, when I use the drop down menu Send to. None of my synths or even a midi out. Any suggestions what I need to do? Have you added a driver to or likewise for the Nord Stage 3 MIDI in a certain folder or ...?
@@studioonetutorials Habe gerade alles genau so eingerichtet (inkl.
Frage: bei Studion One > Optionen > Audiogerät, was hast Du da gewählt?
Merci vorab! Wo kann man Dir einen Kaffee kaufen???
Terrific!
Thank you.
I hope you earn money for this because it was extremely profesional and clear.
Thank you, I appreciate that. I'm glad it was helpful!
Perfect Thanks!
Hi, your video is pretty clear. Now I need to know how to set up my Akai mpd 218 on Studio One so I can use it as a drum pad and assign selected sounds to each pad from ezdrummer. Thanks for your precious help.
I have the mpk mini mk3. I add it using the preset. Thanks to your video I know how to record using my key board, but I can only hear what I hit when I play back the recording.
Thanks Lukas 👌
Great video. Could you do one adding a instrument connect to the Quantum 2626 and with the software.
Finally it helped 😮
will do.
Well explained..Excellent. Can i send back Real Guitar Vi stumming to my yamaha sx900 similarly..wish to embed it in the Style...
Thanks, great video. Do you happen to have a video or recs on choosing a cheap midi controller keyboard? I'm looking for one that will work well with Studio One.
Great video, Lukas. I still can't get the transport buttons working on my Keystation 88 Mk3.
Great video, I do have a question does it apply if I’m using a controller like Arturia Beatstep pro with studio one 5 pro?
Thanks so much for this! Studio One is usually pretty intuitive but those three types of external devices are not described very well! (couldn't get my Behringer RD8 to trigger anything til I saw your video and connected it as a "keyboard")
Great video! Nice. Slow. Methodical. And describing all the available parameters. Can you also show how to create the aux channel in the console for the audio. So that it all comes up together when selecting it as the External instrument in the browser?
Thanks Ronald. I have a video on AUX channels and the External Instruments section in the browser, but it's in German. I might do this video again in English... for now, perhaps watching it with English (auto-translated) subtitles is an option...?
Yes please do a video in english I would greatly appreciate it. does this also work in Studio One 5. thank you
This video makes what is otherwise a very confusing aspect of Studio One, very easy to understand. Bravo!
I have an additional question: I want to trigger multiple channels on my external device similar to the way that a Multi Instrument works in Studio One. I would like to have one track of MIDI data routed to different channels on my external device without having to duplicate the MIDI data in an additional track. Is that possible?
Video please on connecting 3 or 4 Sound Modules to be played by the main keyboard. Thank you
This was very informative. I have 3 Korg Keyboards and have been struggling with how to record them without using the VSt's. I will try to add my Kronos as a keyboard for input and as an instrument for output. I am using Studio One Version 6. I typically play using combis rather than plain piano/organ patches. Will this affect the setup in any way?
Excellent Video. The one thing that I still cant find is how to use my keyboard to record other sounds using the Studio One Instruments.
For example, I want to use the PreSonus Impact drum kit, the default kit. How do I set up the options on my keyboard/controller? Thank you.
Thanks Lukas, I've done identically with a Yamaha YC61, still no success on getting any sounds out from the YC61. No issues with drag n drop VST's, they play well when it acts as a MIDI controller, no sound back out of the built in sounds from the actual keyboard. Tried Local ON:OFF no success. truly stumped. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction
Hi. Great, very useful video, Just Subscribed. I have a question. I just installed my studio one 6, works fine except 2 things. There is a very annoying hissing background noise and I cant get rid of it. The other thing, how can I use the virtual instrument plug ins. I drag them into the track, but I am actually not able to play the virtual instruments, just the actual sound of my digital piano. The piano audio connected using audiobox 96. So do I need a midi controller to play on the virtual instruments, or can I use the digital piano? Do i need midi connection for this? Thank you, Tom
Could you please explain how to map Nektar Impact LX61+ with Studio one 6
Unfortunately i still havent gotten it to work with my Roland Fantom 06, ive added and removed it numerous times as both instrument and keyboard with no luck. It finds it when adding a track, but wont show up as midi to be able to view it in keys in order to fix mistakes
Hey Lukas, vielen Dank - sehr hilfreich.
Nice video Lucas. I've set up Studio One 6.5 to do just this and it all works as described except that Sudio One only transmits note on/off and pitch bend, but not CC controllers such as sustain, modulation, etc. I've verified using the MIDI monitor. Do you know why this is the case? I can't seem to find an answer.
I have a Yamaha CS1-X an old vintage synth. I never knew what it was when I bought it, but turns out it's a pretty popular item. I believe it can be both keyboard and instrument, like you show here with that fantastic Nord Stage 3. I have a question: Can I set up my Akai MPK mini or my ATOM to be used as a control surface only? Many thanks for this vid and all your vids.
That's cool, the CS1-X is a great synth!
Yes, you can set them up up as a control surface only if you want to use them for Control Link (automating plug-in parameters) or assigning Studio One commands to them.
Could you make a video on HOW to get MIDI bluetooth units, like WIDI or Yamaha MD-BTU, to work with Studio 1 on COMPUTER! All videos out there just show hooking up bluetooth MIDI senders to a phone or iPad. I need S1 to recognize BT MIDI in the MIDI set up page.
Ty, this was helpful. I struggle with this every time. Please do one for controllers as well. Q; when you route out midi to your keys, how does S1 hear the sound, as midi does not contain sound?
You can add an Aux channel to the instrument (if using a device that actually produces sound) ua-cam.com/video/JfdUtczw4rI/v-deo.html
So did you put your midi cable from keyboard to audiobox then to laptop or straight from leyboard to laptop/pc? Id like to listen to my own sounds on my modx using my midi cable
500. Beğeni benden.. Kralsın... Teşekkürler...
Hi Lukas... I would like to ask you how I should setup my guitar synthesizer Roland GR-55 in Studio One 6... Thank you in advance for your support...
Lukas, I have a motu 128 to get most midi gear together, a few usb devices, Komplete Audio6 and a StudioLive 16 USB mixer. Do you have one or more videos to help me route PreSonus pc to moto+usb, other pc midi intfc to either use mixer or a seperate PreSonus laptop to usb mixer. I play, record and playback. Its a jungle in here. Thanks!
Good video- have a question for anyone here: using my Keystep 37 to control synths both external and VSTs. Works great say when controlling my Typhon (Inst setup on MIDI 16), but when I select another device it plays the Typhon still.
Is there a way to have it play only the track/Inst selected at the time?
How do you sync the midi clock - so the arpegiator tempo in the midi controller matches the tempo in Studio One?
I have my minilouge xd setup. I can see the midi triggers going into Studio One and I can see my 2i2 Interface receiving sound from the minilouge into its Inputs, but the sound is not making it to my audio out.
was this control surface video, mentioned in the end, ever done?
Excellent, many thanks! I use my Roland Fantom X6 to play sounds, so just as an Instrument. What is the best way to send patch changes to it from Studio One? And is there a way of having all the Fantom's patches information stored in S1 so I can select changes from a list? (Cakewalk/Sonar has such a facility). Thanks!
I think you already found the right video :) I hope it helps!
Help. I am recording my korg synth as midi keyboard from in/out midi cable and it seems to record well when i play but when i listen to the recording, the notes seem all over the place as timing. lowered the buffer size, still didnt work. I use Studio One 5
Do you have an MPE synth? I have an issue and sent a support request to presonus: while I can monitor and record fine, Studio One 6 won't replay the recorded midi, there's no sound. Either I made a configuration mistake somewhere, but I don't see where, or this is a bug in S1, since I get it to work perfect;y in Bitwig Studio and Ableton Live.
I would like to use physical faders to add sounds (VSTs) to the normal sound of my midi guitar for LIVE & NOT STUDIO. I have been told that I must use an on-stage DAW with Studio One.
Thank You Kindly
Is it possible to use pads on my Akai mini in artist version?
I have been battling with my alesis Q88 midi controller for days now it was working before all of a sudden it stopped working with studio one 6 I don't know what the problem is any tips?
Thank you very much for this information. I have an AKAI MidiMix that I use with S1 and I would love for the indicator lights for the REC and MUTE buttons to illuminate when activated. I've searched for a solution, but do not find anything. Do you have any insight if this is possible?
If the MidiMix does not use one of the standard protocols (MCU for example) for transport control, I don't think it's easily possible without writing a scripting layer for the device.
HI - So i just found out that I cannot TRANSFORM THIS MIDI TO AUDIO? Or Bounce the tract to audio. My hope was that after I edited the Midi I would convert to Audio (So i would not need my sythesizer anymore). Do you know how I could do That?
I want to record a piano song i wrote but the studio one is recording every sound around me even when touxhing the laptop sound records it and it anoys me so much. Can samoene help me fix the problem i only want to record my piano
I connected my Yamaha pcr A5000 Yamaha , and I started playing and all of the sudden the sound it's started to come out of the keyboard although I can control it from studio one and I couldn't save it for some reason , just black recording .. any help ?
hi nice channel new sub.. Lukas how can change a song to 432hz on studio one professional.. no videos about with studio one on utube
Thanks for the video. But how can I select the sound bank on your Nord from Studio one? Is there any midi manager like in Cubase so I would be a ble to choose the patch I want to be sounded?
Yes, the easiest way is to create Sound Variation maps.

Thank you!
Hey man, hi, thanks for your video! I'm having a connection issue between my new Mininova and Studio One, and I can't seem to find a solution. Can I reach out to you via email or another method?
I have roland spd 30 pad drum. How to connect it??
Say brother… I have the Roland Fantom X6 no-usb but it has the Midi in-out-thru dim cable connection. From my Roland X6 Workstation midi cable out to the In-of my Behringer Interface which then I plug usb to my Apple Mac Pro laptop… is this my procedure before I look it up in my Presonus Studio One 6.5 Sir??? Booey… connections or routing cable is my worst ability Sir!
I still cannot get my midi keyboard to trigger S1.
It triggers my interface. Virtual sounds can be played by hitting the on screen keyboard within its own window but try as i might i cant get midi to trigger within S1
Good , to the point
But,
We need to see any work around to make Midi-out for an Instrument track to other Instrument track
One of these ways as I recall was to make a midi controller , send note to itself as well
(choose it to send, receive too)
Make an instrument track, put virtual instrument on it
Then make it an input to other instrument track
It was confusing
But it was very well to use with Arturia Vocoder v for live performance within the DAW
Sending an instrument track signal to its track
Or
Sending an audio track signal to its track
Is there any way for S1 to remember which patch to play on the external synth? In other DAWs you would send sysex data from the synth to the DAW and then back when you load the project. Is there really no way to do this? Seems absolutely crucial for work with external analogue synths and VA's.
Yes you can use Sound Variation lists for that. I'm going to do a dedicated video on that but for now take a look at this one:
ua-cam.com/video/WIhAsqHX6ZI/v-deo.html
I added my Prophet Rev2 as mentioned in the video, connected by a USB cable. I can record audio without any issue (with the audio cable), but I can't use it as a USB keyboard for other VSTs. It's selected as the MIDI Keyboard, but no MIDI signal comes in. Do you have any ideas what could be the issue?
You need to check the settings in the Prophet. Maybe MIDI out is turned off or a different MIDI channel is set that you have blocked in Studio One...
Still confused. I have a Yamaha MX88. I want to record different instruments exactly as they sound on my MX 88 to Studio One. How is the best way to do that? Also like at the end where he switches from Piano to Elec Keyboard. I want to lay down a piano track. Now if I want to put down a guitar track and change my MX to guitar, it changes the piano track I recorded to guitar. Do I need to lay down the piano track and somehow save it? I saw another video that said if you set up as Keyboard and Instrument you are stuck always being live (meaning whatever I set the MX to, that's what's going to play back.) Total novice, hope this makes sense. Also for those familiar with MX, it has 2 channels. What do I do when I want to add a 3rd track and 4th track with different MX instruments. I find if I change to Channel 3, I get an instrument sound that is not from my MX and I can't change it.
On the new instrument window there is also an option "recieve from" that you havent explain. I know its not important in the average scenario but what does this do? Is it the same as the instrument input found on the track but you set it as a default?
It's needed for bidirectional usage of automation. If you have an external synth and you tweak some knobs (effect parameters etc.), this can be used to get the automation into Studio One.
A rather unusual scenario considering most people use virtual instruments anyway.
@@studioonetutorials Thanks!
What about if I only have my laptop keyboard?
For an MPC One would you add keyboard and instrument also? Thanks
If it's an instrument (generates sound) and not only a controller, then yes.
@@studioonetutorials great channel, thanks!
and im here a month later and havent seen any answer to my concern. my issue is in the sent area. you had to enter a new instrument then chose an item in the RECEIVE. but how did that option get there in the first place? I try to connect my alesis 8.1. i do that but the only option in the RECEIVE area is my faderport16. at a loss still after a month
It lists all available MIDI devices. If your Alesis 8.1 does not show up there, it's not recognized by your OS. You either have to install a driver, check the USB connection... or if it's an older device without USB MIDI, you need to use your audio interface MIDI port.
@@studioonetutorials I apologize. I did realize that, after I posted. Issues with my interface, not S1.
Again, my apologies
thanks BUT....i have a digital piano, no extra knobs or control buttons. I want to assign unused keys at the top and bottom of the range like they were buttons. How to do that in Studio one?
That's not possible so far - only with really advanced workarounds.
@@studioonetutorials thanks for the quick reply. I was doing that exact thing with LOGIC for PC back in 2000. I had a small midi keyboard in the vocal booth and assigned keys to trigger Stop, Record, REW, del, next track, etc. I'm shocked I can't set this up today in 2023??
hi Lukas, can you record the sound you've created with the midi notes back into S1 at the same time the midi notes are playing?
I have the same question, do you know it already? Assistance would be appreciated, if you like to.
@@Inner-Way nope,Lukas hasnt answerd it yet
@@ronnyb5890 Hi there, it works, I tried and its just as he described it. Just de-active the midi-track, mark the audio-track and klick on the recording button.
@@Inner-Way thanx,i will try your solution,cheers
@@ronnyb5890 not working for me dang it! man this was almost a perfect tutorial. but he forgot the very last part
Would this work for Studio one 5 as well?
Yes, totally!
I do not understand :)
I use Roland Fantom synthesizer, record the MIDI track in Studio one, use the tone in Fantom, and then save the DAW project. Next time I open the project, how to automatically correspond to each track in the synthesizer.@@studioonetutorials
I'm using a stream deck for playing notes, it works fine in other software, where the hell do I have it send out to doesn't make sense
Actually it's very easy: Keyboard = MIDI In, Instrument = MIDI Out. If your Stream Deck should send MIDI data to Studio One, the MIDI devices the Stream Deck uses needs to be added as a Keyboard in Studio One.
@@studioonetutorials I was able to get it to work with having nothing for Receive Out but then it stopped working, super finicky
