What is the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale?
The Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) measures the intensity of the movement of the ground from the perspective of people and the response of the structure on a scale ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (very strong damage) or, in some cases 12 (total destruction). Every earthquake that is large enough to be felt will have a range of intensities.
