I never played those games fully, so this a point of view from a listener only, ok? Well I think the original is better for a single reason: this version from the remake have more echo and instruments, so I think it sounds less creepy (and therefore less mysterious) than the original, because that one had a constant waving sound and the single mono chant. the original knew why it was sounding that way. the new one only tries to be HD and that's fine, but it's not like the original feeling of the theme. Now, I like both, but I know how music completes a movie/game, so the original wins on that.

I think Twin Snakes does it better because it actually sounds more mysterious because it's less of a "stage theme" and more ambient.
