  • Lorenzo's Oil - Etymology of Arrogant / Arrogance / Arrogare
Etymology is the study of the history of words, their origins, and how their form and meaning have changed over time.
Nick Nolte briefly explains the etymology of the word arrogance . It' from the Latin Arrogare - To claim for oneself. It's use isn't stating that I'm better than you. It simply states that this is mine. I own this. I have a right to this. I made this.

I support the parents.they want their child to not live without basic human dignity. He was a vegetable. What life is that .Nobody would want that. Its easy to ask how could they but would you want to be living that way?Only if we are in their position we can talk.maybe we will fight and maybe we won't.

Oh thank god I’m not the only one that thinks this. These parents were cruel to keep Lorenzo living even though he could barely move, speak, basically imagine the one guy from the Metallica one music video. That’s Lorenzo

@@Carousel5883 Spoken like a person who lives in darkness! The Odones LIVED IN LIGHT because they had FAITH! Something you can't understand because you're so used to living in the darkness and lies of today's society.
By the way Lorenzo was NOT a vegetable! Only people who live in darkness see he's a vegetable. Maybe you should research what happened to the real Lorenzo after this movie and then you'll realized he was NEVER a vegetable!

@@Carousel5883 imagine if you had a child with this condition during this era when people hardly knew anything about it. Would you simply accept they would die? Or would you fight like hell to give them every chance at a good life? There are other situations that could leave people in a vegetative state (like a car accident that leaves you in a coma) but that doesn't mean they should be viewed as vegetables. They are still human. If it were my son, I'd fight till my last breath.

I don't think any of the parents in this scene are the "bad guys". They are both trying to handle a shitty situation the best that they can.

The English root of “arrogant” and “arrogance” is “arrogate” (which itself comes from Latin by way of French) and means “to claim for oneself,” and in the sense of “questioning ones’ ‘betters'” comes from the early
    1500's.
An English antonym of arrogate is “abdicate” as in ignore, give up, flee, run away from, ones’ duties and/or responsibilities. For me, this puts being accused of arrogance in a whole new light.
I absolutely will not abdicate my right to assert myself in questioning what anyone tells me I must simply accept based on their status, position, rank, or supposed expertise.

If we waited for doctors to always come up with the answers, we’d lose a lot of ideas for treatments, and a lot of people wouldn’t live long. Some terminal diseases are so complex that you have to educate yourself on the symptoms, causes, and treatments so that you’re as close to being knowledgeable as the doctors treating you; if what they prescribe you doesn’t work, you should have the knowledge to question it, and be listened to rather than preached to like a priest to a choir.

It's an unfortunate reality that genuine scientific research takes time, otherwise you risk making the patient worse with an untested hypothesis. Remember that in another part of the movie, the Adone family subjected their son to chemotherapy because they thought it might help. But instead it horribly lower the quality of his life and did nothing to combat his ALD.

this has an important message, never get the last word from a doctor, I say this as someone who suffered from a disease all his life, there are doctors who can have mistakes, mistakes like any human being, and we are talking about the medicine that is a huge business for pharmaceutical companies, be very careful in trusting, always question everything

I like that this showed the other parents' perspective and pain. And in some ways, they're not wrong. Lacking the Odone's education and scientific understanding, they don't feel competent to discern the difference between a legitimate evidence based therapy and pseudoscientific nonsense, so they consider it wise to defer to doctors.
And honestly, in a world of anti-vaxxers and Jenny McCarthy, this scene hits differently in 2023 than it did in 1992.

'Has it occurred to you that maybe he doesn't want to be around anymore?'
'Has it occurred to you that maybe he does want to be around with you as his parents even though you may want him dead to end his suffering?'
'Has it ever occurred to you that you don't know what he is thinking? Perhaps he loves you even though you may not love him enough to keep you alive. Perhaps he wants to stay alive in his suffering just so that he can be with you. Perhaps he is afraid of dying and he wants to be close to his parent. We don't know but we do know that Jesus know what we are thinking and feeling because he suffered horrendously while his Mother watched horrified. God know about suffering and his mother know what is like to see a loves one suffer horribly. Go to Jesus for the answers.
