- Ever since his breakout role in 2010's "Never Let Me Go," Domhnall Gleeson has become one of the most sought-after actors in the movie industry. His roles vary from supporting efforts in blockbuster franchises like "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter," to lead performances in dramas like "Ex Machina" and "Brooklyn," as well as family fare like "Peter Rabbit."
We asked Gleeson to reveal how he learns different accents for his roles. He says his most recent work in "The Little Stranger" was his most difficult assignment to-date. "The Little Stranger" opens in theaters on August 31.

Following is a transcript of the video:
General Hux: We'll remember this, as the last day of the Republic!
Moon: I always try to help out the law.
Jim Farrell: We don't really know anything of the rest of the world.
Thomas McGregor: It was my fault, I take full responsibility.
Caleb: So, let's have a conversation.
Ava: What would you like to know?
Domhnall Gleeson: If it's the right filmmaker, I'm willing to do anything. I'll do two lines, or I'll do the lead, or I'll do something which isn't flattering. Good filmmakers are the reason that I'm an actor at all. It's because I love good films. So I think I'm also just willing to throw myself into whatever they need me to be for their movie.
Faraday: Caroline, you mustn't let this business get inside you.
Gleeson: The film is a kind of a gothic ghost story. My character grew up very poor. Always looked up to the upper classes, wanted to be from the upper classes. It was a very long process actually getting the accent. I worked with a great dialect coach, we kind of invented a new accent for him because he was from the working class and yet he aspires to be from a higher class, and yet he can't lose the accent completely.
So we kind of invented that. We also listened to Philip Larkin reading his own poems.
Philip Larkin: I work all day and get half drunk at night.
Gleeson: He grew up not wealthy and yet when he read his poems, the accent he had was very posh and then something weird happens when you realize that somebody has changed themselves in some way through their accent.
General Hux: Who do you think you're talking to? All remaining systems will bow to the First Order!
Gleeson: Hux is full on fascist, English upper class, rolls his R's sometime and it's very aspirational and strong.
Gleeson: I thought I had done a really good job at my accent on "Harry Potter," until I turned up on set and went Australian.
Bill Weasley: True enough, owe it all to a werewolf, name of Greyback.
Gleeson: And I couldn't stop being Australian for a whole day, my first day in front of everybody. So that was the worst thing in the world. What you wanna do is forget about it when you're doing it and just be able to be the character.
Oldest Son: It's not my fault, it's not my fault. They never really loved me. They always loved him more. They were leaving me behind.
Moon: I don't know those boys. I always try to help out the law.
Gleeson: It's funny, southern American is definitely easier than a more general American or something from either coast. The southern thing, I don't know I think because of the way that the sentences work and the up and down of the tonality of it, you can hear it and you can grab on to it. It's an accent you can grab onto. South African or Welsh, like they're the nightmare ones, they're the ones that you just like wake up sweating about having to do someday.
I mean, I didn't go to drama school or anything like that so it's my own little system which has developed, but yeah, a lot of exercises in the mornings then I tend to keep the accent up during the day, just so it settles into my mouth and I'm not doing an accent when we start doing a scene. Oftentimes I'll find a poem that I think suits the character and that will be my mantra that I go to because it puts you in a good state of mind and it gets your mouth in shape for what you're about to do.
Gleeson: I'll keep it up on set, but then when they say, "cut" on the last take of the day, I go back to Irish and then I can go home and talk to my friends and not have them hate me. You know? So I can try and be myself again.
you can hear EVERY SINGLE ACCENT in his normal voice.
Nope, it's pure Irish
Nah that’s just straight up Irish
its an irish accent with a bit of american i'd say
Its a southside dublin accent
Naw, it's 100000% Irish
im a simple lady i see domnhall on the thumbnail i click
he's a gem
The babe gets none of the attention he deserves

Oh god I clicked on the wrong comment
It's not everyday you see bill Weasley here😂
Yeah exactly 😂😂
YYYYYYAAASSSSSSS
We're all like, "fancy seeing you here, Bill. How's Fleur?"
He is Oscar worthy.
No one was replying you so I did
@@bigsmokenoextradip7705 Yo Big smoke...whatssup
Would you say he is Oscar Isaac worthy? Huuuh?
General Hux is so unappreciated. Love that character.
I love him, too!
❤❤
ah same! Hux’s life story is quite sad, so I sympathize with him, and he really is a good character, he has loads of potential
I’d like him too if he wasn’t ginger
Well, it's not any of the actors fault the characters are written like garbage
His accents are on point. He's amazing, I love Domhnall Gleeson.
I think he's a great actor, very versatile...sometimes I don't even realize it was him in a movie, especially at the beginning where he often got supporting parts. My favorite is General Hux so far...hopefully they won't kill him or make him even more ridiculous in the last movie...
Well, I've got you some news...

Yes, I know...broke my heart to pieces... 😂😭😭😭😭😭💔
Quality Acting is so much hard work!

It's tough

I love domhnall gleeson, he deserves every role coming his way!
His performance in Star Wars was so amazing. I had chills. He kills every role and I wish to see him prosper as an actor.
My god i love him so much!!! He's one of my fave actors and it's because of his role in About Time 💕
I second that! That movie is underrated! I loved it!
it's amazing how different he looks in his every role, like - you know it's the same person but yet he looks so different, he is an amazing actor, plays with his whole body and face (little expressions that sometimes you don't even notice on the first look), he is so underrated, I like how he tried so many different movie generes
Domhnall glesson is an amazing actor he potray every character so brilliantly projected! Hes underrated
He's a chameleon, i like him, such a good actor and so underrated i I think, he's so gifted
Half of an accent is the choice of words instead about being all about pronunciation of words.
You can pronounce “gallons of gasoline” with an English accent but in reality the Englishman would say “liters of petrol.”
a
Andrew Glinski Lol yeah
What happend to your popularity
uhhm no accent is mostly about the pronunciation. ur talking about diction.
Cu M of fuel
This video still doesn't tell us how actors learn accents. It's just one man talking about his experience, not even about his training tips.
You'd probably be bored out of your mind trying to learn the accent for a role... I know I've been. You'll need to work painstainkingly long hours with a vocal coach to get it correct...
I was gonna type the same.....
@@politicalstatus197 I didn't have to, I just watched British people's lip movements then found where to put my tongue for vowels. I then listened to them say certain words and now I can speak a near perfect British accent
Congrats, you got a general British Accent. Now try to do a single person and match their accents, phonetics, etc perfectly in an impersonation and come back to me! :D
@@politicalstatus197 why do a single person when I can match the general population?
Where’d he learn the accent of shouting EXTREMELY LOUD!!!!!!
Magic
They just wrote his script in ALL CAPS
Old documentaries from Germany
Why you wrote actors in the title? It's only Domhnall Gleeson!
yes but....all we need is Domhnall Gleeson!
hehe 😍
He's just that good at accents they weren't sure it was just one guy
General Hux’s speech just needs a bit more German accent... ;)
Then do it yourself

You have a gem, Irish people. This Gleeson family, damn...
One of my best friend’s is British, when I FaceTime her I accidentally start talking in a British accent...
Raven Hailey I do that except when I'm reading books that take place in Britain
How did that.. Happen...?
Raven Hailey when I ft my American friend, i kind of change my accent to sound american lol, I’m british
Daddy Kim Yay I’m not the only one 😂

this guy's amazing. :D he didn't go to drama school???
His dad Brendan Gleeson is a great actor. He probably learned from him.
@@emzoozie3320 and I think his dad didn't either?
Probably the most versatile and talented actor of this generation
Absolutely!!!!
It's the potatoes doing their magic on a good Irish man
Hmm the guy in the thumbnail looks like his gonna sneeze 😂🤣👍
Senura Kaduwela *he's
Hahaha, at first i thought he was ready to attack, until i read this.🤣
It's when he speaks o I can hear his Irish accent. Like in Hox, op and down, mouth. It sounds so funny. I like hearing Irish accent. It's my favourite along with the posh British one. Sadly, I can't do accents at all, it's because I'm not a native English speaker. I can sometimes hear accents, but I can't put my finger on the specificalities. It's a failing.
Dude…I never would have realized all those characters were the same actor both because of the accent AND the drastic hair/facial hair differences between characters. I am extremely impressed.
He looks like prince hans from Frozen.
I see Domhnall Gleeson in the thumbnail... I click.
I can hardly tell accents apart... like I do hear in the video that he's talking slightly differently when he speaks as himself than as General Hux for example, but I couldn't tell what he pronounces differently. It's probably because I'm not native English-speaker so I'm not so good at hearing little differences in the pronouncication, I only can tell when something is pronounced significantly different way from how I was taught. And I've picked up words and pronouncication from the classroom, from the internet, from movies and tv shows, so my talk is probably an odd mix of American and British English covered with a heavy foreign (Finnish) accent, I don't know.
Still interesting hearing about this stuff though!
Elsa Laiho same with me. I can hear the "heavy" accents and telm them apart, but it makes me sad, that I don't really hear what they worked on in for example "the little stranger"
Dont worry about it, it's normal for non native speakers to not be able to tell between accents of that language. Plus, English can be so varied.
Your English is so good oh my god
@@sarahfitzgerald801 Well, yeah, when I write I can usually pass as a native English-speaker (I read and watch a lot of stuff in English, I write a lot too, plus I have studied English for maybe half my life now and still continue to study it, so that probably explains), but when I speak... well, the other person usually understands me, but I really wouldn't pass as a native with my Finnish accent.
@@elsalaiho1699 if you are interested, is more about training your ears really - and starts with understanding how and why you sound the way you sound, how your mouth opens, how your tongue moves, etc. It takes a while, but it is just training. I'm majoring in English teaching, but I'm a non-native speaker as well, so it was hell going through phonetic classes. Eventually, as you become more aware of your own voice and accent, you start being able to pick more differences and educating your ear to hear things you don't really pay attention to unless you are doing it so on purpose.
Domhmall Gleeson is da boss!! 😍
I cant recognise him on those movies. Good job mate
This is so inspiring!
I can barely imagine what work it must be, props to every actor and actress out there for doing an amazing job!
(But he is right, if the crew and director are nice people and good in what they do, its a lot easier to portray the character)
This dude is a treasure. Loved him in Frank and he has proved himself with every performance since!
he's such an amazing actor and SO underrated
*HIS VOICE IS EVERY ACCENT EVER WTF*
Domhnall Gleeson is just a legend.
I love him as general hux
Domhnall 😭💕💕💕 he is so damn attractive
I looove Domhnall!!! 😍😍😍😍
He is always my favourite actor so talented
out of all the scenes from tlj you had to include the deleted one lool
Iv loved him in movies ever since About Time, it’s one of my favorite movies and I always love seeing him in wildly different parts!
Learning different accents ruined my life. I was born in China; I lived in Germany when I was little; I went to high school and college in America; I had friends from England, Scotland, and Australia; my neighborhood are mostly Mexican now... I could a pretty good impression of their accents, but when I normally talk, I sound super weird. I gained a mixture of several different accents. It is really hard for me to fix my accent because English is not my native language, so technally, I didn't have a original standard accent.
I thought he looked familiar...
He's in Goodbye, Christopher Robin!
SUCH A GRADE-A MOVIE
General Hux loves hugs. The First Order is love.
Domhnall. Crazy talented. It's in his blood.
Ya know, Domhnall, I really love your English accent when you play General Armitage Hux in the Star Wars sequel. Hux sounds funny when he says ruthlessly, "ALL REMAINING SYSTEMS WILL BOW TO THE FIRST ORDER!".
I see Donmhall Gleeson, I click.
Accents? What accents? Can 't get past his face. He's so preeeetttty! Gorgeous man.
He's so talented!
As an actress I do the same thing, I can do more than 50 accents sadly I was not born in an English speaking country so instead I do UA-cam, it's hard to go to the UK or America to follow my dreams of doing film, I've only done stage. I really admire this actor I love this short film he was in for Burrberry.
I see domhnall i click, definitely one of the best actors of our generation
Love this guy!
He's such a great actor and a pleasure to watch perform.
He’s gorgeous
Oh I love theseeee moviess
Hux could have easily been a goated Star Wars character.
Harry Potter's friend worked as a general in the military and somehow got a chance to spend a vacation with a fembot.
PRINCE KRAZIE how dare you disrespect the Harry Potter franchise like this? He was Harry Potters best friend's older brother.
I'm still waiting for the part where they tell us how actors learn to master different accent so that I can have any accent I want 😂😂
saw domhnall gleeson and I couldn't let the video pass; i love this guy
I don't know why but Domhnall's American accent and voice in Ex Machina was sooooo sexy. He's a great actor too ;)
My love 💕💕💕💕😭😭😭 I love this man more than words
We'll remember this as the last day of stefan Karl. Rip Robbie rotten
He’s just a real good actor 😎
YEESSSSSSS DOMHNALL GLEESON!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm here because I read an article suggesting him for Sean if rdr2 ever gets filmed....and now I realize he's been in so many movies I watched & I just never connected him to. He's a chameleon! Strange to say esp since he's a ginger, but heck...he was even in Perrier's Bounty, which is a Cillian fave in my collection. Now I find he's in another with Gillen!! ....Apparently I'm starting a Domhnall collection as well.
0:00 Damn Bill Weasley had a glowup.
Awwww, he's SO CUTE!!!
Gleeson is brilliant 👍👍👍
Oh my god I love him
He's beautiful
If you are doing it for theatre, I suggest watching a recording of the show and try to get your voice as close as possible, or watch movies or TV shows set in the same area your show takes place.
I'm currently in Newsies, and almost all of us need an accent. Just practice!
Thanks for this upload! Always thought about this!
Love this dude
Rose biting Hux is truly iconic.
Not to forget that he’s also in About Time and so many other movies wow
Domnhall!!!! Aaaa!!!!😱😱😱😍😍😍💖💖💖
*The bloody legend himself!!*
Don is a wonderful actor.
So Brendan Gleeson is Hux‘ father…. Learned something new today!
He looks different in all the movies ... difficult to recognise it's him until now
Im about to say that
I think General Hux sounds funny with his British accent. You're awesome Domhnall.
I can totally see domhnall gleeson as cobra commander in the gi joe reboot
I teach voice and diction and I am also a dialect coach. It is very challenging job to teach people who can't "hear" the difference between words like 'are', 'our', and 'hour'.
He is in so many films that I watched! Is very versatile 🌹
black mirror🔥
Precious boi 👌👌👌👌
He was always one of my favorite actors, probably because he's in star wars🎉
I don't know what other countries, but in my experience as a Filipino (AT LEAST IN MY FAMILY) switching accents seems automatic with travel and/or switching language.
Buksiblings Fun Same goes with me.
Apparently we adapt accents easily (well, the very Tagalog speaking ones that don't speak accented dialects at least)
Domhnall gleeson😍😍
So the accent in "Be Right Back" is pretty close to his normal speaking voice TODAY I LEARNED I THING
Domhnall😍
No matter how many freaking characters he plays...he will *ALWAYS* be Bill Weasley..
DONT FIGHT ME
Wow! I never knew he was in all them movies..i just remember him from an episode in blackmirror
As a South African, I can genuinely say that we do have a very complicated accent. It all depends on the area, however. You’ve got the thick Afrikaans accent, the Cape Flats slang, the British/Afrikaans accent where it sounds like you were born and raised in the UK and came to South Africa, never lost the accent but have never actually been there in your life. It’s quite a complicated accent.
I thought i was late😂 but then there were ni comments😂and i realized I'm early😂
I didn't expect to see a fellow army :)
nida xoxo we are everywhere what do you expect😂
Hyungwon's Lips 😂
Sup😂
He is in an episode of black mirror as well
I just realized this guy was in the Be Right Back episode of Black Mirror
