Someone once asked me, “what’s the most horrific thing you’ve even experienced in your life?”. I replied, “Have you ever seen a like button abused everyday of its life?”.......
I once read about a woman who had a coconut crab as a pet. It had a whole room to itself. She would put furniture in there and it would tear it to pieces.
@@bryancooper5495 Fair enough. If I die at sea, there's lots of things that may eat me. I just wouldn't expect to be hunted by a shark while I was walking on land. These crabs are badass!
Not as scary as they look. They are very slow. Very dumb and have very little mobility w their arms. Only birds they eat are birds that are injured or asleep. They dont fuck w dogs.
When you think about those giant crabs, and the fact that "something" takes bites out of whales, the ocean really does seems like such an unfathomable and inhospitable place.
Coconut (aka robber crabs because they steal your stuff) are land crabs. They are basically giant hermit crabs. They are also fairly chill around humans. I used to live in Christmas Island with thousands of coconut crabs.
@@rcarterbrown1 why is that funny? 🤔 it's pretty much the most accurate word to use considering 80% of the ocean is undiscovered. We know what's in space lightyears away, but we don't know shit about what's on our own planet
My grandpa actually encountered some of these crabs in the jungle as a young adult when he was a sailor. He says one of the crew poked one of them with a broom, and the thing snapped it right off like it was nothing. None of the crew got hurt by them thankfully. The natives were terrified of them, which I never really fully understood until learning they were attracted to blood.
Well yes but it's easy to say this AFTER someone has died.... I mean technically in these videos, people did survive, the chamber one, he only died by unluckily going in the chimney bit he could've made it out, the one where they went under the ice 2 people did do it and survive e. T. C so if you know its possibly to survive then you don't expect you'd be the one to die.... . It's about exploration, why go to the moon in the first place when it's possible to die? Why did we go down to the Marian's trench when you could die? Why take an aeroplane abroad when you could die, plenty have crashed before.... As I say its only AFTER a death people say "why do it"..... If they went into the 4th chamber and came up with a scientific discovery of a new species of animal/plant/bacteria that's huge and it cememts their name in history, not to mention new finds like thst could have the potential to unlock what we previously didn't have in regards to science, biology, medicine e. T. C
@@NoNameEst1992 I'd say just about all of these scuba stories arent people exploring new areas. They're going past a grate, or have been warned, or knew about the dangers and risked it anyways.
@@thebenmidthun possible some of them, but the 4th chamber noone has been in and come out of alive, so who knows about that maybe there is something... Also I will refer you to the next video in this current playlist, it has another diving story where people go into "devil's hole" after 2 of them go missing... 2 experienced devil's hole divers go down to the bottom to find then and one of them ends up finding a hole he has never seen before, thst has a current, they check it and it goes to a minimum of 923ft (you've probably seen the video already so you know). Now use that as example for your comment. them experienced divers have been inside that same place many many times before and only then when they were searching for bodies did they find an entrance going soo deep it's believed to connexct to the sea 2000 miles away. so it goes to show there could always be something new to find, especially in the pitch black when all it takes is for your flashlight to hit something you never noticed last time.
Its fucking fake man what hes referring to is how humpback whales will come back with scars but its because of the giant and colossal squid When they hunt and eat the squid its quite common for the squid to try and lach on tho the whales face and mouth but its harmless for the whale most of the times
Ur acting as if you know everything when in fact you know nothing, here's a fact for you " ultimate ghandi " ... its a fact that 90% of the ocean is unexplored, second thing is for you to type on youtube " big white shark eaten alive news "
@Alex Brockmann I assume if you aren't trapped on an small island infested with them they are fine. Like, a costal area with them hanging around I imagine they aren't chasing people through the streets luting homes. I don't want to be injured and trapped on an island with an infestation of any scavenging animal. haha.
@@little_lion_heart9850 I just see you as paranoid. Once trapped there, treat them as food and hunt them down with caution while making sure they are not in the hunting phase.
Can you imagine being stranded on this island and nothing to eat ..then you see one of these and your thinking OMG im gonna eat that, to then realize thats exactly what its thinking about you!!!
They don't eat living animals they can't catch like birds and small rodents, they will eat dead animals though so she probably died from bleeding out or something else and then they came to have a free meal...that's what these animals are for, cleaning up dead things and when you've got an island full of them things get wild
@@Shinransa nah, as comforting as that thought might be, if she was bleeding out, she wouldn’t have built afire on the beach, nor brought out her freckle cream. I am afraid that poor woman died in terror and in merciless pair, torn apart alive.
Good god, being swarmed and torn apart by coconut crabs has to be THE most terrifying death I’ve ever heard of yet. It’s like that horrific bug scene in the 2005 King Kong movie, but in real life. Just thinking of such a fate makes me feel sickened.
They go for carrion. There is no records of them attacking live people, unless provoked, and then they just injure them. She was most likely dead before they scavanged her
Why didn’t Guy (the diver) have reasonable safety setups in place? Such as the ability to pull him up or another qualified diver as a rescue person on board? Seems like a serious oversight.
He did. Look up Guy Garman for dull details. And understand that, at the depth he was diving, just having somebody to pull you back to the surface will kill you. Ascent from those depths requires literal hours of depressurization at multiple stages-- I think tge ascent required fifteen hours for his partner to return to the surface safely. If something goes wrong at those depths you're dead, the only question is how, and how quickly.
As a diver, I love how there's a diving story in pretty much all of these. As a wreck diver, I'm horrified, and now think about one day MrBallen might be narrating my last dive ☠️
Don't worry, I don't TRY to do risky things, all my dives happen with a buddy, usually my dad. I've been diving for 13 hears, he's been diving for 40. An almost fatal story: one day, my dad was ice diving with his two brothers and one college friend. His college buddy thinks the guide wire should be connected to his flashlight, and well, he dropped his light, and the safety line almost immediately. Had they not been in sight of the hole they cut at the surface, I wouldn't be here right now. Diver safety isn't a joke, and we take extra precautions, like running a carabiner right to our vest with the guide lines attached when we enter obstacles. Although it seems like a joke, I am truly horrified that one day, me and my dive buddy might end up on one of these specials, because no matter how safe you are, someone else can and will easily jeopardize your safety and your life.
So I'm a certified scuba diver. I was certified in Cozumel, Mexico. There's a spot out in the ocean nearby that's also named "The Wall" and it's exactly as you described this area in your story. Huge, straight dropoff. Complete darkness. I remember swimming by it and I briefly saw the darkness and it was absolutely the thing of nightmares. I avoided that area at all costs. Remember folks, NEVER dive by yourself. Stuff could turn badly pretty damn quickly.
Being afraid of heights, I also have a problem coming over steep dropoffs in water. Ever since I was a kid I am convinced sea monsters would come up and grab me. I grew up in the Gulf of Mexico and live being underwater, but my childhood fear still lingers in the back of my mind.
I know your comment is over a year old, but I just wanted to share since I came across this video today. I've been on more than 10 diving trips to Cozumel, ever since I got certified at 12 years old, back in 98. It was a yearly tradition with my mom (she was a dive master and later became an instructor, she's now retired and it's been many, many years since the last time we went on a dive trip together). I've been to Cozumel's "The Wall" on several trips, very likely the same location as you. When I was younger we would usually skip that day of diving. But after I was around 14-15, it was something we would do a few times on each of our trips. It's such a surreal experience, I can't even put into words. On your right, just beautiful coral reef, teeming with all the typical reef fish and sea life you would normally see in the Caribbean. Then on your left, abyss, just sheer dark blue nothingness. Literally a 90 degree drop to the depths of the ocean. The running joke was, hold tight to your dive buddy or you'd end up in Cuba if the sharks didn't get you first, due to the massive current in that area. It's actually kind of terrifying thinking back on it now, but holy crap it was such an incredible experience. Thank you for bringing me back some nostalgia, I sure miss those trips.
@@mandapanda6233 you're exactly right! On the right, beauty like never before seen. Ocean life, color, just extraordinary. But on your left, nothingness. Darkness. Terror. It was so scary. And I was a brand new diver. It sure was something I'll never forget.
@Don’t get Banned! I'm pretty sure they would run away, unless I was dying on the ground. Crab tend to do that, but you felt it for a second. How satisfying would it be to crack one open with a driver or 6 iron?...swing through the crab.
You know, I'm 40 years old and have read about stuff like this my whole life. Mysterious disappearances, aliens, Bigfoot... You name it. But sometimes when I'm watching your videos I find myself being wide eyed and creeped out. You do a phenomenal job at telling these stories.
It's crazy to go from living in a reality where we didn't know what happened to Amelia Earhart, to one where the most likely scenario being Amelia Earhart was eaten alive by giant crabs.
Yeah, I’m not buying it. Mr. Ballen is super entertaining and uses research and logic when telling his stories. This is the first time for me to come too this conclusion on one of his stories. To much acceptance of evidence after the bones are destroyed.
Its fucking fake man what hes referring to is how humpback whales will come back with scars but its because of the giant and colossal squid When they hunt and eat the squid its quite common for the squid to try and lach on tho the whales face and mouth but its harmless for the whale most of the times
Me: grunting when I hear Mr Ballen about to talk about a story Ive heard before. Mr ballen: Telling the story from a unique perspective with key details I didn't have knowledge of before.
So, crabs and spiders are actually somewhat closely related. Imagine crashing on a deserted island and getting ripped to pieces by giant water-spiders.
So... after about a week of binge watching I have now watched all of these stories and as of today (7/11/2021) let me share afew things I have learned... 1 never go into the woods. 2 never go into the ocean. 3 never go into any body of water or foliage at all cause you will die. 4 never go to a family members or friends house again you will die, if not on the car ride over then definitely when u r there or on ur way home. 5 even if you do some how manage to make it home ur still going to die cause the axe murderer in ur closet was upset u left him alone for afew days! All and all safest place to live seams to be under the secretaries desk at ur local police department!
My wife and I visited Bolton Abbey & did the walk around it which passes the strid so we took a break there - I almost slipped in at one point. We threw 3 large sticks in at the top to see if they’d float down but they all instantly disappeared and never popped back up. Very creepy .
I live near The Strid. I can confirm this is a true story. It looks like nothing but is absolutely deadly with whirlpools under the surface so if you fall in it holds you underneath. Thats why it takes days for bodies to wash up downstream.
@Don’t get Banned! --- Fence it off. Children have been lost. Tourists would be curious and create more tragedy.... Darwin Awards for those stupid enough to climb fences.
So I'm from a place called ulithi or the ulithi atoll and we actually eat coconut crabs regularly. A crazy thing about them is their big pincers can actually lock closed and pretty much won't let go unless severed. Love the videos mr ballen! Hopefully you like my little tidbit lol
I once decided to camp out on an island off of Central America, because I'm stupid and it seemed like a thrill. I woke up to dozens of crabs climbing all over me and pinching me, and I screamed and jumped up, brushing them off, and I think it took a couple of days to stop shuddering. Props to you, Amelia. I could not even handle normal little crabs.
I went diving on the reef in Little Cayman. We went to the wall on one dive. Turning away from the wall and looking into the abyss is the most awe inspiring thing I’ve ever experienced. It’s so humbling.
Man these are the scariest, saddest, most interesting, and addictive stories I’ve ever found on UA-cam. Can’t believe I just found out about you. Keep it up, while I watch every single video you have!!
Their called coconut crabs, and they dont usually attack humans unless they are attacked or they smell blood, other than that they are just cool looking crabs
What in the world is eating half of a whale, off of that wall? Also, imagine the horror of being shredded alive by giant coconut crabs! I have actually read this theory of Amelia Earhart's demise. Reading it was not nearly as interesting as watching Mr Ballen's dramatic delivery! RIP Amelia!
@@inthelandofmorethansmall7582 Ah yes, the time-honored tradition of making shit up that sounds spooky regardless of any evidence. I'd like to point out that everything has its own gravity.
Its a fake photo (and video) used for shark week - this was the episode about the megalodon. Whats biting whales is thought to be cookie cutter sharks.
After he started talking about that deep sea mystery creature taking bites out of whales, I found myself being less interested in the scuba diver's midlife crisis story. I want to hear more about the mystery creature.
Look up the story of the tagged 9ft shark that got eaten by an unknown creature. The tag beacon went hundreds of meters down into the ocean out of nowhere showing an unusual increase in temperature during its dive. The tag got later found, partly destroyed by stomach acids of unsaid known creature. The dude who was leading this research got completely obsessed with it and actually fucked up his career as a scientist, taking on jobs on local fisherboats to spot the area etc. He found out that the area where the shark was eaten was an unknown breeding-ground for killer-whales so at this point in time the two most probable theories are that the shark got eaten by a massive killer-whale or by another massive white shark. The largest on record white shark was around 20ft (Deep blue, btw also probably preggy at the time they recorded her for the last time). Now imagine: if you're a shark and you are horny AF. WHO CHOSES THIS 20FT MONSTER? Something legit looked at it with it's 200m year old brain and was like: "Fuck it, Imma tap that." That's the super frightening thing about Deep Blue, that she was pregnant. It means there's an actual male-counterpart of her and male sharks are known to be way more aggresive. And with alot of animals in the animal kingdom female counterparts are often bigger and heftier... But not not in particular with sharks: the girth and weight of females is often bigger (esp. when preggy) but not their length, when not preggy they average out pretty well compared to males.
@@MrInsertyn Thanks for that info. Interesting stuff. I remember seeing photos of Deep Blue and actually thinking she looked kinda cute, all chubby and preggers.
Its fucking fake man what hes referring to is how humpback whales will come back with scars but its because of the giant and colossal squid When they hunt and eat the squid its quite common for the squid to try and lach on tho the whales face and mouth but its harmless for the whale most of the times
Never heard of that coconut crab theory. (I've heard of the crabs, but not this side of them.) That just adds a horrifying element to the already tragic story. Even if those bones weren't hers, someone was probably still eaten by those crabs.
I’m from Guam and we have coconut crabs all in the jungles. Coconut crabs don’t bother people ever, they are more like scavengers. My guess is Earhart had already passed when the coconut crab started chewing on her.
@@peachy_michy333 maybe she feasted on several of the crabs before she died. Coconut crabs are just like all crabs, they try to avoid creatures that are bugger than them and can eat them. I wish I had a few dozen right now. I'd farm them and sell them for big money. But I don't think they'd fair well in Brooklyn.
When I was 14 my family went to St Croix and we looked over the wall. It is EXTREMELY intimidating. And it made me immediately take an interest in marine biology. I never pursued a career in it, but I keep up with new discoveries and such. It's amazing how little we know about the deepest parts of the ocean.
Live in West Yorkshire, England and it's so weird to hear an American mention it 😄I was at the Strid last Summer with my kids (Visiting Bolton Abbey - gorgeous place) and I could not believe the casual attitude parents had... letting their kids run about barefoot on the slippery rocks near the water! scared me to death I couldn't watch I had to leave! kept my boys up on the path, didn't even go down onto the rocks ~believe me you can't tell folk how to parent around here unless you want a gobfull of abuse!
Don't ever tell a British Parent, especially a British mum how to parent. OMG you might as well commit suicide instead. British mums are so protective of their children it is scary. I hugged my British gf (I am also British) in front of her mum cause she asked for it, and her mum told me she would kill me if I did that again, and continue to yell at me for over a year about it. This was because of a fucking hug.
It's no different here in the states. The worse the parenting the more defensiveness and abuse you'll get trying to save their kid. And here after something happens they sue like it's the places fault.
i have never really been a fan of stories/events that are relayed in story with minimal footage or photos, but MrBallen's way of relaying the stories with his precise "set the scenes" description deliveries paint a very vivid picture of the particular scenario & are enjoyable to watch, possibly the best youtuber of this genre on the platform
I had heard of the coconut crab. I even identified it without fail when I saw the thumbnail. what I did not know is that the are so ravenous to the extent that they may even be able to consume a live human. quite a scary thought because hunters like that would not take you in one bite. they would tear you down. Imagine land piranhas stripping you down with no intention of ending your suffering.
@Alex Brockmann These aren't normal crabs, they're not super aggressive but if your asleep or your wounded, they won't mind slowly scuttling towards you and start taking chunks out of you while your alive, its only when you start fighting back that they scuttle away and sit just out of reach for a few minutes till you stop moving, then they'll start at it again.
Born and bred in West Yorkshire, visited Bolton Abbey almost every weekend as my family had a yearly pass. The Strid TERRIFIED me. My mum is very protective of us so never allowed us to go anywhere near it. Even from a very safe distance it almost felt like I was being pulled towards it, as strange as that sounds. Seeing how close some people got was scary. I remember my auntie shouting at my cousin for getting too close, and when I went back as an adult I told my dad off when he stood on the 'ledge' rock you spoke of. It's stomach-churning when you see diagrams of what's going on below the surface.

There'd be nothing you could do, there'd be no way to get away from thousands of these giant bloodthirsty crabs.

I completely forgot about The Strid until I watched this video and sweet lord, there are so many signs and notices telling people “do not go in” even in the safe areas, because some people will swim further thinking they’re still in the safe area and you never know how close is too close.

I can’t bring myself to me one of these people who creates a new thread saying “erm actually Mr Ballen you’re wrong” .. probably looks the same anyway.
I feel like the sign about the Bolton strid should mention that it has a 100% mortality rate, not just that it's dangerous, it's easy to disregard the latter but not the former
I went snorkeling in Australia and loved it but scuba diving like this or in deep enclosed caves terrifies me. I can't understand why anyone would ever do that for fun 🙃
After listening to these stories for a while, I'm starting to wonder how mankind has survived this long. There are way too many people who will look straight at death and just be like...I dare you.
It might not be helpful for survival per se, but it is requisite to make it to the top of the food chain. Tigers are crazy too, I saw a video of one try to bring down a charging rhino. That's the difference between the bull, and the guy grabbing it by the horns.
Idk bout y'all but in my brief time on this earth I've learned if it's a Ballen story and it starts with underwater diving and/or underwater cave anything just politely but firmly shake my head "no" and get up on outta there!

Bolton Abby is one of the places I spent a lot of time as a child. We swam in lots of rivers but we’d been taught to understand it and know how previous days weather can suddenly change quiet water into danger so fast. We were told why we couldn’t swim at Bolton Abby, even if others were, so we never went in. By the way, the husband who was found 10 miles away, hadn’t travelled nearly as far as the wife, if she was found in West Yorkshire!!
It’s completely safe to swim at Bolton Abbey! Or as safe as anywhere else, I guess. Just don’t get too close to The Strid, and you’re fine. Bolton Abbey was one of my favourite places to visit as a kid. It’s so peaceful there, and I was always impressed by the power of The Strid. And warned to keep well clear of the edge!

Right, just because someone is an expert scuba diver doesn't mean they have to do expert scuba dives.
What surprise me is that this experienced divers didn’t put a mark on the right tunnel not to get confused

As a diver, I love how there's a diving story in pretty much all of these.
As a wreck diver, I'm horrified, and now think about one day MrBallen might be narrating my last dive ☠️
Dude.....dont say that.
Whenever I dive I can hear his voice bracing the audience for my brutal death
😅
Omg don't say that and be safe...
Do you think it's the same wall as this just many, many, many miles apart? Looking on the map they do seem almost a straight line horizontally
Being afraid of heights, I also have a problem coming over steep dropoffs in water. Ever since I was a kid I am convinced sea monsters would come up and grab me. I grew up in the Gulf of Mexico and live being underwater, but my childhood fear still lingers in the back of my mind.
@@karenstubbs94 same here. Terrified of heights and deep water

After he started talking about that deep sea mystery creature taking bites out of whales, I found myself being less interested in the scuba diver's midlife crisis story. I want to hear more about the mystery creature.
Me too!!
Something legit looked at it with it's 200m year old brain and was like: "Fuck it, Imma tap that."
That's the super frightening thing about Deep Blue, that she was pregnant.

I grew up in England and live near Bolton Abbey where the Bolton Strid is. When we were little kids, our parents would take us there for picnics. I never knew about the strid though 😧 that’s utterly terrifying. I’m sure there has to be plenty of sign posts up warning people not to go near it. I’ll definitely be telling my kids about it so that when we go to Bolton Abbey this summer (I just moved back to England after 16yrs in the states) that they will actually listen when I tell them not to wander off near the water.
I live near Bolton abbey too xx

Have you been to this The Strid, is it human made?
The Strid: loves to consume its victims, digesting them very slowly in its many stomachs.
I’ve been there also. The photo he showed saying it was the river wharf is actually my hometown Knaresborough.. and it’s the river Nidd.. but Ho hey.. I feel like the sign about the Bolton strid should mention that it has a 100% mortality rate, not just that it's dangerous, it's easy to disregard the latter but not the former

After listening to these stories for a while, I'm starting to wonder how mankind has survived this long. There are way too many people who will look straight at death and just be like...I dare you.
Well, these are stories with scary/bad endings. Plenty of adventurous people have risked life and limb and come out the other side.
It might not be helpful for survival per se, but it is requisite to make it to the top of the food chain. Tigers are crazy too, I saw a video of one try to bring down a charging rhino. That's the difference between the bull, and the guy grabbing it by the horns.

I live in the UK and have never heard about this river. 😱😱😱

New fear unlocked : coconut crabs
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amount of times I’ve dreamed of being alone on a desert island…. Never again… screw that shit!!
I hardly can believe the theory, I live in the tropics and coconut crabs ain't gonna attack humans, and in the very rare cases they do, they are extremely slow, and they are delicious, so if you see one, you are in for a treat, they are ugly but they taste so good because they eat a lot of coconuts.
@@gustlightfall so do you think this is just an urban legend story?! I mean it seemed a bit far fetched to me. I don’t want to be petrified of flying in a plane across the ocean and crash landing on a deserted island then get eaten by giant angry crabs!! Next time I fly I’ll remember to pack a couple of coconuts to use as a distraction… I can throw the coconut and run in the opposite direction! I think what really creeps me out is that they live in the ground but they can climb trees 😫
@@elliec7677 Definitely, what was most likely that happened was she died of her injuries and that is when the coconut crabs ate her. On the contrast, those coconut crabs will be your best source of food, think of them as lobsters that you won't have to dive to get and they are very slow and easy to catch, just make sure to get a small stick for them to get their pincers on and then you can grab them by the hand, since they are too dumb at pinching at the stick instead of you.
I'm taken by surprise how much I'm learning from your vids... I've never even heard of these 3 dangers!
The tame waters and night sand look so innocent
You're telling me the answer to one of the greatest mysteries in history is that Amelia Earhart was eaten alive by giant crabs? WTF
I think I understand why we weren't taught that in school. Talk about nightmare fuel.
Search the "TIGHARchannel" channel on youtube.com they've have be expeditions to Nikumaroro going back to the 1990's, and discovered a number of artifacts including the freckle cream jar. Nears as they can tell from the trails worn into the undergrowth, she survived at least a couple of weeks. Imagine being all alone on an island with those crabs in pitch dark every night, and trying to collect condensation for water in 80+ degree heat. She would have been their during the dry season and their are no other fresh water sources on the island. Amelia met a very sad end.
Im just going to think the crabs ate her after she died.

I view Mr. Ballen's stories as cautionary tales. Do NOT do this, this, this, this, this, this, this, or this. Oh and one more.....
There is a cool aquarium near Cincinnati OH and they used to have a fantastic display with Japanese spider crabs. It was so spooky and otherwordly. It was my all time favorite aquarium attraction ever; I could stand and watch them for hours. Last time we went back (few years ago) they had removed the crabs and turned that section into all tanks with seahorses. I figure the public complained about the scary crabs, and now it looks like Disneyland. What a disappointment.
The two dislikes are the coconut crabs who are mad they got found out.

@@andrewpierce4098 I wouldn’t, not the larger ones, anyway-they accumulate toxins in their meat, which can be enough to kill a human. In reality, _that’s_ more likely what killed Amelia-she either perished on or near the island and _then_ was torn apart by CCs (crabs are scavengers, and CCs are no exception), or she was fatally poisoned after eating them.
@@gobalbucs Agreed, whoever was probably dead or near death from something when the crabs got to them. Eating a crab seems like an honest mistake. The crab, or some desalination with the bottles would've been cooked on the fire.
