LILACS! Spring Has Officially Sprung, And It Smells Amazing! (Two Lilac Variants In My Yard)

HAPPY NEWS: Yay Lilacs!!!! Sorry the camera didn't pick up the deep purple tones of the darker variant. IRL these two variants look quite different, and the colors are gorgeous together as if we planned it. (We didn't; I only knew they'd bloom "purple," but we got 2 variations of purple, and it's divine!) They remind me of my childhood, picking a whole wagon full of lilacs each spring in a field near out house, bringing them home, setting jars of them in every room of the house while my mother was at work to surprise her when she got home from her ICU nursing job after midnight. I had to stop when she got allergic to them. They were her favorite until then.
The fragrance is strongly sweet, calling to all the local nectar-loving critters. I'm so proud of my larger long-lived perennials. Like the tree next to it that I planted 20+ years ago, this bush should outlive everyone alive today if it's allowed. All it needs is some light, a little good soil, and a bunch of time to grow. Nature does the rest.

I haven’t seen lilacs since I left Wisconsin at 12 yo. They must thrive in colder climates. Never seen a single one in Florida or Virginia. To me, nothing smells as good as lilacs.

I love them and they're a hearty bush even when they aren't flowering. I wish they flowered longer, but maybe the short span makes them all that more precious!
