You don’t need to charge rent to the person renting the room, but if you don’t that could be considered ISM and reduce the renter’s SSI benefits. I believe there’s a new law that will soon be implemented that states that fair market rent (which doesn’t count as ISM) is about $430/mo; I’ll need to look for the exact number. Unfortunately I don’t have a video on this.
Hello, look, I received a letter saying the following: your participation in the payment of Medi-Cal expenses has changed to $0.00 monthly as of 11/01/2024. What does that mean? Please and thank you.
Hi Ellen! I just wanted to thank you for sharing very informative videos. I just a have a question. Both my parents are retired and has Medicare benefits. They’re both receiving sss benefits with approximately $1500 a month and my mom is collecting from IHss about $2400 as she takes care of my grandma. We recently applied to see for Medical benefit to see if they can help for some bills since my dad is going dialysis. Unfortunately their share of cost is 1600 a month. Is it better for them to purchase a supplemental insurance and drop the Medical? I’m a little confused about what Medicare cover. Thank you in advance if you reply.
The share of cost rules are changing for the better in January 2025, I’ll be doing a video on that! In the meantime, you might want to talk with a Medicare specialist to see what Medicare covers.
Hi Ellen. I’ve been trying to find confirmation that for 2025, the $600 necessary living is changing to 138% of the FPL. Some articles I’ve been reading said there are budgeting issues for this so this change might not actually be happening? Do you happen to know more? Your videos are so helpful! Thank you!
IELLEN, I'M ON 70 YRS OLD IM ON DIALYSIS AND I'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW CAN I HAVE MY ROOMMATE TO TAKE CARE OF ME AND HER BEING PAID BY MEDI CAL OR MEDICARE AS MY CAREGIVER CUZ I NEED ASSISTANCE. WHERE CAN I APPLY? THANKS IN ADVANCE❤
Thank you for confirming what I thought to be correct. I wish you would do a video on this topic. Some people assume that if they aren't "asked" if they have other monies, they assume they aren't doing anything wrong by not disclosing it. But it is wrong.

Can you do a video on what happens if you are on medi-cal and you either inherit or get a large pay check during one month only... Do they stop medi cal for month? Do you get bumped off completely?
Since Medi-Cal doesn’t look at your assets anymore, if you inherit a lot of money, it shouldn’t bump you off immediately. But if that money starts generating income, that can interfere with your Medi-Cal or lead to a large share of cost. I recommend you speak with DHCS in your area to get more specific information for your situation.
The government make it so complicated. Why not give the elderly 1 type of insurance especially they are old and have a hard time navigating all these medi-cal insurance terms.
so very helpful, thank you.
do you have a video on what you have to claim as income if you rent out a room in a house you own

California did not ratify the medical needs. I looked it up. It doesn’t change because of the budget surplus

what happens if a person doesn't disclose savings or other money?
If DHCS finds out you haven’t disclosed assets, that could disqualify you from the benefits, and you could be penalized.

Would hiring a caregiver from an agency be considered a way to spend down income to get below $1732
Unfortunately I don’t believe paying for caregiver services decreases countable income for Medi-Cal share of cost purposes

Can I drop advantage plan and buy 184.00 drug plan and 100 dental plan and get original Medicare back.

Do you pay that $268 every month wether you use your health insurance that month?
Can you be a little more specific with your question?
