  • In this video I attempt to fix my brother's laptop. It has a constant white screen fault. It does however connect to another display and works fine. Is it the screen, is it a cable fault or is it a faulty GPU???? Let's fine out.

you did a wonderful job removing that LCD bezel, I just wanted to tell you generally starting from the top is best and working down to the bottom. under the bottom side of the bezel where it rests on the screen there is usually a strip of pretty strong adhesive. be careful with that it can cause the bezel to break. I work on laptops like these all the time. and I was gonna say, it's more likely to be an LCD issue instead of a motherboard issue if the device displays out of HDMI. lastly, if it displays on an external display it generally is unrelated to the graphics chip. Good work Vince

Well done, Where to start , The screen fault is the control chip on the lcd screen that is faulty and not the lcd panel. Yes EC ( Super IO ) on this model is programmable, you can read the bios chip and extract the EC file from the bios but you would need a programmer to program the EC something like rt809f or rt 809h , I don`t think the ec was at fault here rather that the 3.3v rail was gone. I would do a bios update just to make sure the ec and bios match. Try to repair the faulty laptop would be a good video. Cheers 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The white screen is most probably because of the missing VGH/VGL/VCOM/VDD on the TCON board and not because of failed ACF bonding. There will be a dc-dc converter on the PCB(on the LCD panel) . It might be failed.

19:20 If you would short all the pins above the plastic separator, nothing should happen. The longer pins are Ground, as they need to be connected to the battery first. Below the plastic there are the two positive pins and the two smaller pins besides the Ground pins are most likely data lines for measuring the temperature or reading out the serial number of the battery. The plastic part is a separator to prevent plugging in the battery the wrong way and to prevent accidently shorting the contacts. It is also a bit longer, so no straight piece of metal could short the voltage to the data lines.
It could always happen, that someone is using the notebook without the battery (stationary use in schools) and a paper clip or something similar gets under it and would short it out.

Nice! 👍 Hats off to you Vince for persevering with the original one and bringing it back to life. I wonder if the LCD panel has a t-con (timing control) like a TV? If so, could it be that which failed?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 роки тому +4

Maybe Steve. I'm thinking it is the little chip on the top right of the screen purely because of where the screen is grabbed and the lines that sometimes appeared, but the bottom board may be the culprit 👍👍👍

With your eye loupe, the open end is supposed to go into your eye socket where it sort of stays there like a monacle whilst you look at things, not really made to be placed down onto something. If you are wanting to use it not in your eye I would really suggest getting a plastic housed one. Plastic sets from 2x to 10x are inexpensive and most useful. I use 5x and 10x the most. A conductive metal one around electronics seems like an accident waiting to happen. Hope this helps. Love your videos. Keep up the great content.

Suggestions were, change screen or remove power chip and short it out, but this comment said this, remove battery and power cord and hold down power switch for 30 to 60 seconds replace battery and power cord and turn on and strange and silly as it sounds my screen came miraculously to life

Some additional info that maybe helpful.
Places to look for white screen issues are the components feeding the 3.3v to the screen(lvds) cable on the motherboard.
Is 3.3v on the connector on the motherboard, yes then move to the screen. No then go backwards to the switching component feeding the cable.
On the screen iteslf if there is 3.3v on the screen pcb at the cable then look for the VCC or TST point on the screen pcb.
If no 3.3v on VCC try running a jumper wire from the 3.3v at the cable to the VCC point to see if you get picture back on the screen.
The above has worked twice for me. Once on a Lenovo and once on a HP.
On a third laptop I had to run a jumper from the connector on the motherboard to the VCC on the screen pcb and it worked but the the brightness was on full and always on.
So I had to find a 3.3v point that was only active when the laptop was awake so the screen would go off when it went to sleep or was shutdown.
Its a handy fix but most screens if the same size are swappable these days.
Really enjoy the video vince, especially the way you deliver them 👍🏻

The first thing I do with a suspected screen problem is to plug in an external monitor to the laptop. On older machines a vga or a hdmi on newer. @@boastyy I meant that only some models have a dedicated GPU installed. There is an HDMI port on both models, but it is connected to the CPUs internal graphics instead of a GPU in this model.
It depends on the exact model of the laptop how the HDMI port is connected. On models without a GPU it is always connected to the CPUs graphics. On models with a dedicated GPU there is a special IC that can switch between the CPUs graphics and the GPU.
Troubleshooting of video problems strongly depends on how the exact board of the laptop is made. There are also some laptops where you can remove the dedicated GPU for upgrades or troubleshooting.

I got a lenovo like that that someone had thrown away in ewaste. It had the white screen issue, but wouldn't do anything, and no external display either. I reflashed the bios chip and was able to get it to boot up, using an external screen. The internal was also broken, I think maybe someone got annoyed that the laptop wouldn't turn on and punched the screen.

When i removed cardboard the screen would freeze or go white. Ive heard others fixing this issue by shorting the lvd in to the 3v in on the screen connector pins if that works the use a jumper wire to keep the pins shorted.

If your wife was looking at beauty products (or your brother in laws daughter), you may see adverts like that! I often see adverts targetted at my wife lol. That said - I think YT advertising allows them to target specific videos. Maybe the person in marketting there just didn't do their job properly lol

Still can understand why anyone will put 1 stick of ram even as an upgrade when everyone should know that 2 sticks work better. 2 sticks of 4bg works better and faster than 1 stick of 8GB and the same goes for any amount of ram. 2 sticks of the same matched ram put the machine in dual channel. just chuck in the bin and get new one with new fresh battery, new warranty, new faster NVME drive not these SATA crap from 10 years ago and hopefully a better screen too. Thank you for the video

I've killed circuit boards when probing with a multimeter. If you short adjacent pins you can blow up sensitive integrated circuits without even realizing it. Pays to start with a schematic and know what's hazardous to the device before probing blindly.

    • @Hereford1642
      @Hereford1642 Рік тому

It is the shorting and not the probing that is the problem. Use a probe with a very fine tip and keep a steady hand. I have scope probes that have plastic lugs either side to help but they don't help when the pins get very close together. Then it can be a good idea to follow the track away from the pin and measure at some other component which is connected but where it is safer from short circuit.

Those voltages around the faulty screen seem very low. Does an inverter not need to bump up the voltage to power the screen? Most of your readings were under 1 volt. I would have expected at least 10 volts out of the 15?

Cheers Paul. Maybe, I don't know if the fault was on the actual screen or the board feeding the screen. I spent so much time on this off camera because of the eye loop incident, that I didn't think to measure voltages on the working screen. 🤦‍♂️ 👍👍

      @@Mymatevince Hey There Vince
I have an HP Probook G3. It was a very good laptop but one day while I was in a zoom meeting the laptop just turned off and now whenever I connect the charger the screen starts flickering white. When I smelt the side of the laptop (fan outlet) it smells burnt any idea what the problem is?

Gosh, if only I know as much as you do. My laptop's screen is also white. But if I let the laptop run for about 20mins, the white screen gradually colourises and soon the screen is normal again, until I shut the comp down or the screen saver comes on. Then back to the white screen again.

One of my uncles has a laptop which developed a white screen fault and I didn't have the experience or equipment at the time, but info pointed towards reballing the GPU. He claimed it was a virus. I said find a PC repair place who knows how to hot air rework motherboards. I don't know if it ever got fixed.

Why don't you buy some extra fine probe leads for your multimeter? It'd be a damn sight easier..

my man literally out here breaking shit so he can try to fix it back
you lucked out finding that board diagram because if not the source of that 3volt rail would be a pain if not impossible to find

They are not so difficult to find. All of the sub supplies on a motherboard will have a coil associated with them and one side of that coil will be the regulated output of that sub supply. Test each and read which one has no sensible voltage. He should have done that and checked for the 3V supply before he jumped into swapping the superIO. There was no need for that at all.

Removing the bios battery and shorting the contacts would cause the bios settings to be lost, in most cases the computer would automatically use the default bios settings when the bios settings have been lost
My sister used to have a dell laptop, at some point she gave it to me, and i could tell that it had a dead bios battery as whenever i removed the rechargable battery with the computer unplugged and shut down (which i did during the attemps i made to open it up), the clock on the computer would revert to the default time
The laptop had Windows XP on it, and also the rechargable battery did not hold a charge by the time it was given to me, well, the laptop could only be run off the battery for a few minuites before it would need plugging in

An earthing strap to ground is standard practice in electronics repair as the repairer can build up static and easily frag a circuit.

screen going all white , i had one that was a good screen and while fitting the bezel in place the bottom right corner got pressed little too hard and the good screen faded away to white never to work again. only made that schoolboy error once.
