The most surprising thing for me in this video was you being able to actually find a Lowes associate available in your store to cut wood on the panel saw.
Went there to get my own countertop supplies and waited for over an hour after asking for help twice, left.. went to the other lowes on the other side of town, picked out boards (the only 4 non corkscrewed ones in the whole store).. was told the saw guy went home for the day. Went back to the first store the next day, was told the saw was out of order until further notice. Went to the second lowes, nobody knew the password to the saw, was told to come back the next day. Just a regular week.
Great video. I've been doing laminate countertops and much more, for over 30yrs... Fyi: what i have found to use as a separation of laminate & plywood - VINYL BLINDS. They are fairly thin, but thick enough to give you the separation.. And they're easy to clean. I have multiple strips for various projects... Such as, narrow and wide laminate countertops, I do a lot of medical facility door laminate and cabinet laminate so the shorter panels work perfectly.... Thanks for the video.. always good to see how other people approach a project. . .
17:33 Came out great, nice job. Couple tips Ive learned. Using Silicone to seal garbage disposal drains in a Stainless steel sink seems to hold up a lot better over time. The heaviness of the disposal, mixed with the thinness/light weight of the metal sink can vibrate the putty out over a few years. And also if not using an air gap when running the dishwasher drain hose it's best practice to run it through the top (about 32" high) of cabinet to prevent any siphoning or backflow problems 🤙🏼
fantastic. I am starting this project soon. I got 50 sheets of 3/8" baltic birch thru a friend for $6 each and this is the perfect use. I will triple it up for a 1 1/8" buildup.
Nice job with the laminate sir! Another old trick and alternative to the dowels or extension cords to keep the glued laminate from touching the glued plywood top is to use old metal or plastic Venetian blinds strips. They stack easily in the tool chest and can be re-used for years. Cheers!
As I also like the look of the visible plies in plywood, I built the table top for my assembly table in my garage from 1250 x 42mm (49" long x 1 /5/8" wide) staves of scrap 13/16" formwork plywood from work with the resin surface planed off, and ended up with a 1200 x 840 x 40mm (47 1/4" x 33" x 1 9/16") slab. I finished the edges with a 1/8" roundover bit and treated the surface with 4-5 coats of satin clear flooring laquer. It came out absolutely fantastic. :) I mounted the table top to the 2x4 frame with 9 countersunk carriage bolts (rectangular frame 1000mm long x 760mm wide with a central crossmember).
Gorgeous!!👍👍👍 Thanks for sharing really really like the top (and I'm happy you had to took the other top 😅). For sink installation a plumber told me a trick. If you chalk the sink fill it halfway up and let it in there for 24 hrs until the chalk is hardened so you get a perfect press fit around the sink.
Awesome job! I love all of it in this kitchen. A tip for you: If you want your top to be easily removable, please consider the possibility of using "famos" type connectors (approx € 0.4 each) instead of pocket holes. This hardware can be also used in cabinet making for any 90° fast joint.
I usually add a strip of solid oak to cover the plywood edges before applying the formica. The oak gives a nice finished look. But it's cool if plywood edge is your thing.
You can also get laminate edging that matches the top. I did this for some built in desks, and people thought I’d ordered custom granite until I had them look under the top. The trick is to not get a round-over edge but one where the top comes to a sharp corner. So the line/seam is hidden in the line of the corner, then run a bead of color matched silicone along the corner.
@@amd2800barton there is a brilliant video on how to apply a finishing pre-glued strip on a rounded corner. Please visit "bonarreda" channel. These guys make an awesome job!

Awesome video. Great tips.. plus I'll be completely remodeling our kitchen. This countertop can save me some money. Also thanks for keeping all the mistakes that you did. Its awesome to see that you can deal with anything, just gotta be patient with yourself! And none of us perfect 👌
Worktops look really cool and modern, great job. Real high end kitchens in Europe often have exposed birch ply. It seems a lot of America is along way behind Europe with regards to kitchen trends. I see a lot of new kitchens in the states are similar styles to we had in the late nineties.
The laminate tends to fail in the corner of the "L" because that is where the strain is the highest. You can help prevent this by cutting a bigger radius when you pre-cut the laminate. I use a 35mm forstner bit in this kind of situation.
Nice job Johnny. We just bought a house a while back and the inspector gave us a tip...get a hose clamp or something and get that dishwasher drain higher than where it connects to the drain, otherwise nasty stuff hangs out in the low spot and stinks. Love the video!
Just an idea. I would stain the plywood edges a darker color to match the top to much of a contrast otherwise instead of the clear coat. In the end though it is want you like.
Great video, Johnny! Countertops look great! You definitely want to elevate that loop of corrugated dishwasher drain line above the connection to your disposal. Otherwise, you’ll have dirty water just sitting in that section.
Awesome video ,instructions ....( I do prefer to have it in a little slower pace thou ) Love the idea about using strips vs. a whole new sheet of plywood. Everything came out beautiful.. Great job. Thank s again

I learned from a different creator that for 90 degree corners it’s safer to do a diagonal line and then trim out the excess triangle after it is glued down. Love how this turned out.
Love the look of wood edge exposed, and flat laminate WOULD have have been my choice, too. As for induction cook top, I have wanted one forever. Checking the videos from site, does it have a timer feature? I bought the free standing (with timer) style to see if I'd like it. Yes, great choice! Magnetic pots & pans ARE important. Well... you know how it goes.. someone like me is going to comment. 1. turned out great. I may do something like this. 2. Nortric birch.. 3. use dowels.. like 100 of them. 4. you can also come back with a block of wood and a hammer. Smacking that down really makes it grab the adhesive. 5. put a round over on that. 1/8 - 1/16th. Really softens the edge. A Seriously good job. I have the same layout minus the area to the outside of the washing machine. Going to start doing the math to do this. Got a like and a sub. ;)
We design & build bespoke plywood kitchens all the time. We do use high grade, high quality Birch ply, as it’s much denser & the edges look great. By far the most difficult part is joining the worktops. Laminated plywood is not forgiving of even slight imperfections! Not like solid wood, where you could just sand out the imperfections.
If I used a colored laminate like say red, is the laminate backing the same color? Or would I see a black stripe along edge between the plywood and the red laminate?
You should probably raise the sure vent up as high as you can without making it difficult to replace. Anyway I looked up this video because I'm planning on making a plywood countertop but not using laminate. Nice work! Question; I would have thought to glue the laminate on the top without trimming it, and make a trim cut just once. Had you thought of that? Just wondering the reasoning for what seems like an extra step.
The exposed edge/laminate countertop, in my opinion looks especially sweet with 1" plywood (rather than a sandwich of (2) 3/4" panels). Its much less work, and my eye prefers the thinner countertop.

I’ve used laminate on a few projects with good results, vanity door fronts with wood edge, desk top also with wood edge. There’s a LOT of laminates out there with all sorts of colors, styles, and textures. At the end of the day it’s what you like. There will be bathrooms that look amazing but the owners will still remodel them. Personally I’m not a big fan of the top but I still liked the content.
I think you would have been better off either laminating the edges the same black color or leaving the plywood top visible. The 3 contrasting colors look like you hobbled the thing together from scraps. But since this is the way you wanted it to look, you could have achieved the same by gluing 1/2" strips of plywood on the edge of some OSB to reduce material cost.
Like so many others have said, it's hard to get the Lowe's guys to cut the wood.
