I finally figured out why Red is so special. More special than all the other champions like Cynthia. He's the only champion that was us. A player character that keeps on returning. Like most people returning to the games and playing them, he represents us and building our team, becoming the best. People can argue that other champions are better, and they may be right; but none can or will ever hold a candle to how special Red is. Because he is us.
This is fact when I first battled red in gold I was shocked I ended crying because I remembered my journey through red version before it was stolen from me when I was a kid

You see a Pokemon come out from the ball and hear familiar music. This by far will be the toughest opponent you have ever faced. A trainer who somehow rose his Pokemon above the 100 level limit. You somehow come up with the strength to defeat him. After the battle, the hooded figure walks off and something falls out of his bag. You see only one object, a hat. You instantly know, this was him. This was the Pokemon trainer known as Red.

It's very cold, dark, and the pokemon there are relentless. You almost running out of supplies and finally, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. You've reach the summit. The light is blinding, there's only white as far as eyes can see. It's hailing but somehow you catch a glimpse of a person that standing in front of you with small yellow pokemon in his shoulder, staring at the cities far far below. You can only see his back, but somehow he seems familiar and you realize.. it's him. You knew the stories about him: The pokemon trainer who single-handedly destroyed an entire evil organization, the trainer who have bested the dragon master, and the former rival of Blue, taking his title just right after he became a champion. Staring Down the three Kanto starters. Powerful, so rare you can't even get them, not even by trading with another GSC game, and ridiculously high level. The lesson this man is trying to teach is clear: FEAR
I think it's because of how people interpret him based on the context. He's been atop that snowy mountain for three years and doesn't say a word to you, which gives him a very solemn vibe. Personally, I like to think Red isn't being sad or creepy, but just bored and resigned because he hasn't had any Trainers to fight for three years.
That's a good way to look at it. And at least he fixes that boredom. I forget which game, but it's nice to hear he comes back for matches in tournaments :)
Perhaps... After seeing how the path of the champion ruined his friendship with BLUE, and then facing mewtwo, he was.... No longer his whole self. When we stopped playing, that is Red left, waiting until someone appeared who was strong enough to defeat him
I wouldn't really say his friendship with Blue was ever ruined. They're eternal rivals sure, but I'd say they're friends before anything else. I believe in what I saw in Pokemon Origins even though anime has a fine reputation for ruining great games when bringing them to the big screen xD

Random question. Don't take this the wrong way as just about every Red artwork I've seen is beyond badass but, why does he always look so depressed?
I think it's because of how people interpret him based on the context. He's been atop that snowy mountain for three years and doesn't say a word to you, which gives him a very solemn vibe. Personally, I like to think Red isn't being sad or creepy, but just bored and resigned because he hasn't had any Trainers to fight for three years.
That's a good way to look at it. And at least he fixes that boredom. I forget which game, but it's nice to hear he comes back for matches in tournaments :)

I wouldn't really say his friendship with Blue was ever ruined. They're eternal rivals sure, but I'd say they're friends before anything else. I believe in what I saw in Pokemon Origins even though anime has a fine reputation for ruining great games when bringing them to the big screen xD

Haha thank you! I really appreciate the sentiment. I had no idea this song would blow up the way it did. I barely cracked 500 views back then on any of my remixes or produced songs. My biggest fans were my high school friends lol. I wish I wish I'd taken this music stuff more seriously lol. Well I'm more architect than music producer nowadays.

While I guess it's up to interpretation since Red represents the player, I think he isn't really any different from the typical protagonist. Y'know, just a nice kid who cares a lot about his Pokémon and wants to be the very best.
