The Valley of Knockanure is an Irish ballad detailing the arrest and murder of three lads by the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) that occurred during the Irish War of Independence at Gortaglanna (Gortagleanna) near Knockanure, County Kerry, Ireland, written by teacher and poet Bryan MacMahon.
These lads were unarmed. The first to be shot was Jerry Lyons. Cornelius Dee decided to make a run for it. He immediately took a bullet in the thigh but managed to escape. The other two men were shot on the spot. Today a memorial stands by the roadside where the three died.
My cover was heavily inspired by that of Daoirí Farrell.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
You may sing or speak about Easter week
Or the heroes of ninety-eight
Of the Fenian men who roamed the glen
In victory or defeat
Their names in history pages told
Their memories will endure
Not a song was sung of our darling sons
In the Valley of Knockanure
[Verse 2]
There were Walsh and Lyons and the Dalton boys
They were young and in their prime
As they rambled to a lonesome spot
Where the Black and Tans did lie
Republican bold they did uphold
Tho' outlawed on the moor
And side by side they fought and died
In the Valley of Knockanure
[Verse 3]
It was on a neighbouring hillside
We listened in calmed dismay
In every house, in every town
There kneeled a maid to pray
They're closing in around them now
With rifle fire so sure
And poor Dalton is down and Lyons is dead
In the Valley of Knockanure
[Verse 3]
So they took him down beyond the fence
Where the flowers were in full bloom
And they made him kneel down upon the grass
For to face his final doom
And then Dalton he spoke, as his voice it broke
With passion proud and pure
"Oh for Ireland I'll die as I face the sky"
In the Valley of Knockanure
[Verse 4]
Now the summer sun was setting now
Between the hills and the sea
And the pale pale moon was rising
Far out from Tralee town
And the dismal stars and the clouds afar
Are darkening o'er the moor
And the banshee cried as our sons they died
In the Valley of Knockanure
Erin Go Bragh. These tragedies will never be forgotten.
We can only hope… but so many are… (exactly why I’ve always asked for Henry Joy; it would mean so much for someone else to ever say his name)… and they deserve to be remembered… I’d never heard these names until today. Sad that so many are written out of this rich history…
@@menyou1443 My family was on the north/south border and were lucky to make it to America. I'll always have that fighting Irish spirit as a result.
@@joeygallegos5235 we are subdued but not out; one day we will be free… may the sacrifices and survivors of this conflict continue to inspire (and one day evoke) lasting change, freedom, and peace…

It’s really cool that you have that connection! I’m writing of the Famine (G-ide) and the fighting long ago-back in Henry’s day, before, the first arrival of the Peeler’s, the Penal Laws, etc… it’s years long, the book, but the narrator’s father was exiled from Dublin down to Sligo Bay when he was 5, after eviction and imprisonment for an eve, and spent most of his youth trying to find his own way (with his family) back to Dublin… they settled in Ulster (Fintona and Derry, on the Tri-county tip of Donegal, Tyrone (where Fintona lies on the Strule River) and Derry…
I have done extensive research and I try to represent both sides of Ireland💚💚💚 and too I promise to keep fighting for them-we are one people; and I stand with them!
HE DID IT! The mad man done it at last!! Brilliant Seth, well done lad
Thank you!
As a Kerry man, and relative of the Dalton men, you did this song Justice Seth
Best Irish Song. ☘️🇮🇪🎼🎵
I saw this in my notifications while listening to another one of your covers.
Arguably one of the best Irish music channels out there! Keep up the amazing work Seth!
Thank you!
saw this as rather lackluster when I first listened to it, but upon my monthly relisten to everything, I truly appreciate how beautiful this song is.
I was hoping Seth would do this one, thank you.
Beautiful! So sad, but hauntingly beautiful!
This is beautiful! Great work!
I listen to this at least twice a day… o more lol… ❤️❤️❤️
We must and will remember these tragedies for so long as our people live, Tiocfaidh ar la.
Amen! I promise to remember as I have family (Henry Joy, leader of Ulster ‘98, who I beg has a place on this forgotten heroes album we are being set up for), who is forgotten for his role in fighting for our freedom-because of him, I also try to remember all the other fallen we don’t speak about…
Tiocfaidh ar la!
26+6=1! Always has and always will.
Remember all men who fought and died for the hopes of standing in unity in the name of freedom. Not a soul should be forgotten especially the ones who gave their life during those troubling times.
Good man. Decent version its a hard song to sing well done like it!
I should have figured Seth was a fan of Daoirí Farrell.
Your voice is brilliant ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
I've been listening to Daoirí Farrell's version for a long time now, I can definitely sense the inspiration there. Wonderful cover, as always.
Ní dhéanfar dearmad go deo orthu.
It is astonishing how your name isn’t in lights Seth, with how spectacular your voice is.
One day perhaps
Awesome song! And an awesome rendition Seth! I loved the softness to it, really gives it a unique feel 👍😁
Thank you!
@@sethstatonwatkins You're welcome as always! Keep up the good work! Padraig Pearse soon?
This makes me very happy. You Never disappoint with the sound and replay value. Your presentation is very nice and formal. I would love to sing with you. So I just sing along. Good job on it all.
I feel you on the singing-I may have rejection and social anxiety that keep me from performing, and I may not be American Idol winning material, but I sound absolutely beautiful with Seth…
❤
Well done - I’m surprised he doesn’t have any Irish heritage
I love liam clancy's version of this, thanks for posting!
Proud fenian 🙋♂️🇮🇪 they had nothing, fought with their fists.
I was just thinking how it would be if you sang with @Colm_R_McGuinness. That would definitely be a goose bumps moment. I personally suggest "The Star of County Down" as a song request.
We have a collab in the works! Not that one but I think you’ll enjoy it just the same.
I'd love to see you cover 'Raised on Black and Tans' by Gaelic Storm
Goated
I request (rising of the moon), (some say the devil is dead) and (Star of the County Down) for videos PLEASE 🙏 we need these as videos!😁
Already have them! And on the albums.
Pleaaase do The regular army o
YEEEEEEEEESSSS! We need that one matey!
Need to come up with a catchphrase, cause I'm gonna be out of praise-ful /or/ inspirational words to say.
You will never understand the feeling,
Until your last moments become fleeting,
Lasting lives split asunder,
Well all be 6ft under,
So go on now
Remember to take your time, and feel free to give life a try,
For jems await in life's big mine - hold them dear before you die...
Eh, time to go write a DND encounter for Saturday now. Anyways Seth it's always a pleasure, I hope you have a great week.
Wonderful words my friend
2nd f@$#! why 2nd
So close mate
