  • The Singer 15 was one of the most popular models of all time. This is a 1925 Singer 15K30 with Sphynx (or Memphis) decals. The machine has been lightly and sympathetically restored to full operational order. In this video I show you how to thread up and operate this vintage hand cranked sewing machine.

Thank you so very much...your restoration videos of this machine are marvelouslly calming meditation for me (the music is perfect.) I pray that the frustrating essential tremors of my hands may diminish enough for me to better maintain my own old Singers. Also, I would love to add a hand opperated machine to my little group.

I just acquired a 15K at an estate auction and pretty sure it's a 15-30. SN is S3829 and I believe dates to 1906. The sphinx decals are absolutely pristine, though the surface and internals are filthy. When I saw the decals, it took my breath away !! It came in a mahogany coffin case which is in great shape. I'm slowly and carefully loosening everything up. The presser bar adjustment screw is frozen and the needle bar is sticky and everything under the nose plate needs a complete cleaning and re-lube. I'd never seen an upper tension like this as the discs nestle in a little cradle with an attached pin that serves as the actuator. That assembly was also dirty and rusted, but now polished, oiled and working great. It's my first hand crank and can't wait to get her sewing.

Persevere with the oiling - it will be worth it! Congratulations. They're a work of art aren't they?

This is my 36th vintage machine. I explain to people that old sewing machines are like girlfriends: they are all amazing and treasures. Some have small flaws, but each one special and wonderful in her own unique way !! @@CurioByBSpokeDesigns

Thank you so much! The manual that came with my singer was a struggle to decipher so I’m really glad that this video’s here!

Thanks so much for this video! I have a sewing machine similar to this, but a different model. I spent years trying to figure out how to use our sewing machine. A relative of mine knows how to use the one we have, but she lives in a different country and wasn't able to show me. This video is a life-saver! Now I can start using our sewing machine, thanks to your wonderful tutorial. Thank you again for this! I watched this video and learned how to thread and stitch with my machine in under an hour. I hope your day is better than my day, which is excellent now that I can use my sewing machine!

I've just inherited one of these with the Sphynx decal which I plan to restore. When I look up the
serial number it says it's a model 28K. Is this the same as a 15? Also at some point a motor was added on the back. Would there be any issues with removing it? I would prefer it as a hand crank. Thank you so much, your videos are giving me great hope that I can actually restore my newly acquired treasure myself 😊

A 28k has a long bobbin in a bullet shaped shuttle. A 15 can be identified as the tension unit is on the front plate. You should be able to swap the motor for a hand crank without any problem.

love all your videos thankyou, i have a 1940 15k treadle machine, but i dont understand(dyslexic) the numbers after it like this one is 30. what does it all mean its very confusing as im wanting to restore mine so i can use it myself,i also want an instruction manual but dont want to get the wrong one

Any 15 manual will help really. The numbers after are usually how it is driven - the 15-91 was a potted motor. There's different numbers for hand crank, treadle power etc. Basically they are all the same machine. Some models of 15 are different though - the needle threads a different way. Just take note of where the finger of the bobbin case points.

great video, thank you! could you please tell me the correct model # for the bobbin case & bobbin. i inherited the same machine, just 1927, but it’s missing the case & bobbin and i’m trying to resurrect it 🙏

You would need to work out if the bobbin case is an 11 o'clock, or 1 o'clock style.

Hi, I have a very similar one in silver decals, no sphinx, same tensioner, bobin winding with a cam but sligthly different, thing is, it has NO point to attach neither a motor nor a handle crank. Serial H1030789. I am in the process of adjusting it, Does not stitch. I wonder if it is possible to use a motor in it. Maybe making a simple stand and attaching the motor to the stand itself.

The serial number comes up with a Singer 27 dating to 1906. My guess is it would be possible to mount a motor that way.

Mine is 1925, hand crank, but different threading and bobbin. Having trouble with hook not grabbing the bobbin thread. Cannot see how to get the racer out? Have you seen the same issue?
    Thanks

Hi! I just bought an old singer from a garage sale, as far as i’m aware it isn’t broken but when i engage the stopmotion screw and try to stitch the leather band (i have an pedal activated sewing machine) or starts moving but doesn’t move the wheel or it moves the wheel a bit and then slides off. If the stopmotion screw isn’t activated it is really eazy to pedal and move the wheel but when it is deactivated it becomes really hard to move even by hand i tried to oil the machine but that didn’t have a big effect. The singer is made in 1925 and is french (the manual at least) on the front of the manual the singer is identified as No. 15. Do you have any tips on how to fix this? Thanks a lot in advance!!
(ps sorry for my bad English as it is not my native language )

It's either seized due to old solidified oil, in which case put a little paraffin/kerosene in all the oil ports and leave for a few hours. then go back and oil all the points with sewing machine oil. Heat from a hair dryer will help soften old oil.
It could also be jammed up with old thread in the bobbin area. I would check the bobbin area first and remove any tangled thread.
      hope this helps.
