Sky Sabre: Up close with the Army's new air defence system

- Опубліковано 1 лют 2022
- The new Sky Sabre system brings together data from the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, as well as being able and can hit a tennis ball-sized object travelling at the speed of sound.
The Army's 16 Regiment Royal Artillery has welcomed Sky Sabre, which is a replacement of the Rapier missile system.

Nice system. I see it's using the Swedish SAAB "Giraffe" radar system. Britain and Sweden have a lot of military manufacturing together with BAE and SAAB and Thales etc.
That NLAW is a joint Swedish-British anti-tank weapon.
I hope Sweden procure some of this.. Ukraine war has shown Anti-air defense is critical.
And I hope Sweden joins us in NATO now that Russia has proven it's a psychotic aggressor that really can't be trusted at all!
They do indeed, mate. We have similar needs, a similar mindset, are both very clever and inventive, are both very resourceful and both punch WELL ABOVE our weight in terms of size of our Countries and military power. 🇬🇧🇸🇪✌✌

A lot of newer missiles coming out with the "sky" title almost got this confused for the US Sky Hunter. I guess "sky- whatever" just sounds cool haha.
@Varangian Guard Yeah seems to be a popular title. Sky Viper by Northrop Grumman as well lol.

It’s being deployed in the eastern flank of Poland defence secretary ben Wallace just announced
Interesting that the UK has moved units of Skysabre into the east of Poland where it's coverage easily extends into the west of the Ukraine!
At least we finally have a decent air defence system. I wasn't particularly confident with the Rapier.
I would take the range numbers with a grain of salt. Range is sometimes determined as effective range vs certain types of targets. Air to air missiles can travel 200 miles and take out a slow moving cargo plane, but the range to take out a fast jet would be significantly less as the missile loses energy the further it travels - even ramjet after a certain point
You also have a British convention of "+", they'll often understate by saying something like 25km+ instead of 40km. It all means public stated ranges don't mean that much.
@@davidhouseman4328 From what I read, it was reported by Janes Defence that the Camm missile actually flew 60km in trials. Although if true this is likely to be a maximum range in perfect conditions, effective range would probably be much less, but it does give you a good indication the range is definitely more than 25km.
Thanks for that General Matthews👍🏾
I still think we should commission a long range system. Allow Sky Sabre to mop up those that get through. A lot to be said for multi layered defence. This seems "Eggs all in one basket" to me, or as the Americans say "Betting the farm on it"
We probably will commission one at some point, especially with the escalating tensions
WOAH that just upped and turned left on a dime.... That is freaking awesome
@Ryan Davies I did not know that
thats one nice bit of kit
Which cost less, CAMM or MICA?
Many countries still pick MICA even though CAMM already is available & even though French surface forces don't even use MICA
wow, that certainly looks pretty impressive. some pretty impressive calculations going on to control that lot at once... I wonder at what sort of range the missiles own guidance takes over...
It's a short range fire and forget missile, it only has a 25km range. You can add course corrections though through its data link. It's meant as a last ditch if all other longer range SAMs fail.
Longest range SAM the army has operated ever.
@@ThatCarGuy it's not a back up to long range SAMs, it's a back up to jets.
@@davidhouseman4328 depends, jets don’t do much against cruise or ballistic missiles.
@@TT-hd3zi it doesn't depend in that we don't have a long range SAM system for it to be back up to.
More generally the longer range SAMs may have utility against ballistic missiles but also have issues with cruise missile due to them low flying, and given the extra cost they are likely a worse option than something like sky sabre.
All very good but can they get it into the shops in time for Christmas?🎄
Hello from Ukraine
Greetings and salutations from the UK!! Long live Ukraine!
The presentation would have been a bit more impressive had the launcher been filled with some drill rounds rather than completely empty.

key detail here - what is the smallest target they would shoot at = cruise missile. smallest...
Oddly enough, there aren't many wpn systems which are the size of tennis balls currently. A cruise missile is smaller than an aircraft- so obviously, that's the most likely smallest tgt the system would be used to engage.
@@TheCoolCucumber tf are you on about? 😂 when i said key detail i ment anything above a 20ft cruise missile is fairgame, meaning...the 28ft brahmos hypersonic missiles might have being a focuse for developing such a system. - what was that again about a key detail i misunderstood?

Who's here after hearing that the UK will deploy its Sabre anti-air missile systems to Nato ally Poland, along with 100 troops.
This is got no chance , russia has way better air Defence systems hence why they were struggling for air superiority because Ukraine has their old BUK and S-300 Soviet systems which are way better than this, they should’ve reverse engineered t he s-300 and made it better to try to rival the s-400 this system has no chance just like the crappy SAM systems and the iron dome that failed against home made rockets in the Gaza war , russia has the best air Defence and missile technology it’s only evened out by our superiority in AirPower with jets like f-22 and f-16’s but even then they are slowly catching up

As a standalone vehicle, how does Land Ceptor/Sky Sabre scans and engage targets?
It doesn't - it needs the giraffe radar to function
@@Alpha_0ne276 nah, i did some research a long time ago about this, it can indeed be operated as a standalone vehicle. However, it can only track targets not scan. Meaning, u have to manually look for targets with your own.

Thanks for sending them to Poland. We are in huge need for AA systems in case of Russian agression.
I heard Poland have their own home made air defense systems
@@ParallelComparison yes, one of the best ones literally production launched a year ago it's called "Piorun" or in English simply "Thunder". It's previous previous version ("Grom") shot down in Georgia something like 12 Russian planes. We gave the new ones to Ukrainians in like few hundreds of them and I strongly believe those few shots downs from yesterday may be the outcome, at least partially. Even states bought big batch (up to 1000 systems?) of it. But there is one simple disadvantage - once effective this is only 2 men used, very short range system (I think up to 6 km). We don't have medium range and long system AA defence in Poland whatsoever (under development , they bought some Patriots but in such quantity that Russian saturation attack would wipe it out). It's simply expensive as hell, highly advanced and long lasting to produce such capabilities so even if you borrow it for time being it's a huge help and increases potential Russian blood cost by a degree.

I was in the process of reading the CC that did " can destroy aircraft, drones, and laser guided smart bombs" when the guy started talking again saying "The smallest thing we would usually shoot at is a cruise missile". Those statements don't really match up.
"Usually". Cruise missiles are high value and high risk enough, and maneuverable enough that you'd need an interceptor like this. Other targets can be more cost effectively dealt with.
@@obliviouz the comment went right over your head. In one sentence he's talking about using the weapons to intercept small drones and laser-guided bombs, but then he follows that up by saying the smallest thing that they would intercept with the weapon is a cruise missile. Which contradicts his earlier statement since cruise missiles are huge.
@@-NOCAP- No, actually I think it's the reverse. I emphasised "usually" from the quote because that's what made the difference. Example: "My car can go fastest 200mph, but the fastest I usually go is 60mph."
"Usually" is a statement about frequency, not capability limits.

Nice system, but too limited in numbers to be of any use.
But can you pick up Sky history channel on that thing during down time?
How many are we buying? Can we deploy in the UK for home defence while supporting overseas deployment? Will all of the UK strategic home targets be defended while these are deployed overseas to protect expeditionary forces?

@@rago8594 Hi, I know it is still being deployed but my point was how many systems are being procured? `there is no point in having great air defence for our forward deployed assets but leaving our home assets (ports, bases, airfields, energy systems etc.) totally undefended. UK has never taken home defence seriously and we can't suddenly magic 100 systems into place overnight. We also only have a few Type 45 destroyers so they won't be available to make up the gaps. The RAF has very few fighters so we can't rely on those. And if the airbases are wiped out we won't even have that.

🇬🇧 Sky saber can target 8 threats with 360 direction fire can take down threats from all direction
The radar can detect Anti-radiation misslies, i.e missiles which target the radar. It can also detect and engage both cruise and ARM missiles but only has Medium/short capability (up tpo 25km). Russia has a very capable long range air defence system called S-500 which has an operational range of 600km however these are clearly two very different Air defence systems which fulfill different air defence roles.
It's a short range system, it protects itself, basically meant as a last resort if other long range missiles fail. It's max range is 25km(the ER version 45km range with some saying up to 60km) which makes it similar to the US NASAMs meant to protect high value targets. It's also similar to the Russian TOR missile system.
@Drew Peacock Perhaps Aster 30 missiles from a Type 45 destroyer or longer range systems provided by NATO allies such as the US or Germany. The UK doesn't have a longer range missile system - I suppose that combat aircraft are the "long range" option for the UK.

Unfortunately everything in war is venerable to something. That is the nature of war after all.
In the context of general strategy this is a back up to air superiority. At the point where the enemy are running SEAD missions we've probably already lost.

Get some sent to the Falklands. ASAP.
Already have.
Don't need it. Argentina can't afford aviation fuel for its air force, never mind missiles.
Argentina is in no shape to pick a fight with the UK in the 21st century so far. I understand and totally agree, keep the Falklands very-well defended. I merely doubt Argentina could currently pick any fight with the UK. That would be giving Argentina way, way too much credit really.
While an awful lot of stirred up, frankly silly anti-British political rhetoric and tall talk comes out of Argentina from time to time (usually because some random Argentinian politician wants to bank some easy brownie points with their electorate, feeding off pre-existing anglophobia, like French politicians insultingly regularly do for attention), if you just glance at _the absolute state_ of the Argentine military capability of late, you'll see how woefully incapable they are.
Bluster aside, Argentina might even be in worse shape in 2022 for any kind of purely hypothetical scenario of conflict/war with the UK, _than they were in 1982_ and it probably is true to say. Argentina has had old ships _sink at anchor_ in their ports, for a start. Tragically on a humanitarian level, they lost an old 80's vintage, pre-Fall of the Berlin Wall era German diesel-electric submarine, with all hands, in recent years as well. No disrespect that is an appalling fate.
Britain offered and gave assistance - even though there were some elements within Argentine society and even government, rudely telling the British to leave. Delusional behaviour from some old anglophobes in Argentina. The fact the UK rendered genuine aid to Argentina, as did others like the USA, says it all. Britain is the class act and actual adult in the room. At least the UK helped in the oceanographic search efforts.
The Argentine Navy and Air Force operate largely antiquated units/vehicles. I know it is good to get ahead of the curve and anticipate any developments, improvements or changes on their end, though putting it generously they are outmatched. Putting it harshly, they would be barking up the wrong tree to dare cause trouble. And for what? Who would they be trying to kid? They are not even able to justify it on any level, no matter what anyone tries to claim.
99.8% or something like that on the Falklands voted to be UK citizens (and the few - literally a few people - that voted the other way, might have done so by accident or for a joke for all anyone knows) Or maybe a few genuinely do want to see the Argentines take over. Doubt it. It should be 100% pro-British, and from what I can tell, mostly is. Again, probably some troll ballots/voting cards in there for the lols (or maybe some need specsavers) The people of those islands have clearly spoken. It is a self-determination matter. Most international support is with the UK.
Surely this could hit and stop a nuke then ?
