Great advice and I agree NEVER compare yourself to your competitors it is soul destroying. Focus on YOU and YOUR business, you have a unique set of skills and remember there's room for everyone in this business. Lastly find your niche and become the best you possibly can don't be a generalist.

You risk burning out. At the same time, any sane client wants support and they need to know that their website will stay up. Honestly, I'm not that great at web design yet and I still have things that I'm figuring out, but during my journey, I connected with amazing people through freelancing sites and now I outsource web building, coding, and even all analytics/ tracking. I focus mainly on client acquisition. I work on sites if it is something my designers are unable to do or they are not able to get resolved (very rarely this happens). I use the flat fee rate for my services and I'm focused on smaller businesses. I allow 50% payment upfront and the remaining balance to be paid upon completion. My time frame for sites is 6 - 8 weeks, (though they are usually delivered at least 20% sooner, which makes for very happy clients). I keep coming back to this video for other nuggets of info along the way. Thanks again!
I think the key with using the Setup and Monthly plan is: 1) Establish clearly written in the contract about payments are soley for the price of the website design and not including monthly maintenance fees, these would be a separate monthly charge the client can opt in for. 2) Keeping the domain name & hosting charge in your name until the client has completed payment in full. Plus, if set up to run monthly for 1 year, at the 12 month mark once final payment is made, then transfering the domain ownership over to the client and switching the hosting over to their name. This way if payment is not being made, the website can be taken offline until payment is up to date. Granted, this all needs to be spelled out clearly in the written contract, but overall it seems feasible in my opinion. If the site is say switched to maintenance mode while awaiting past due payment, the client would have more of a rush to get their account squared away. Think of it kind of like a "Rent-to-Own" set up, like how Rent-A-Center does their furniture products. And as Darrel has said many times before in previous videos, anytime you create business documents, proposals, contracts etc. run it by your laywer first before using. Not saying every business deal has to run through your lawyer, just when setting up your documents templates you'll use for each client. Yes, this will be a small cost up front, however, having your lawyer fine tooth comb these can prove invaluable in the long run and help prevent many issues. Just my 2 cents. And as always Darrel, your content is above and beyond spectacular! Thank you!
Why not just require them to pay you before the site goes live regardless of who is hosting? Maybe if you are trying to make your price more feasible for your client but it seems like it could get messy and if you are going to do anything to help the client while secure the deal, on average it would make more sense to just lower the price and do away with the possibility of an awkward relationship with your client..

After studying graphic design 15 years ago I've been making WordPress websites for family, friends and my own projects, but the thing that has stopped me from doing it for clients (especially high paying) is the fear of their site getting hacked. Or even just a plugin conflict that I don't know how to resolve. Don't website designers need to know all about how to see and clear issues with infected files, etc, in the back end. This is the thing I really need to study up on as I start this as a career! PS, what an excellent video this is!!!

Awesome, this vid seems right in my wheelhouse. I did Darrel's Divi tutorial about a year and a half ago, then spent the last year learning HTML/CSS. I also have an extensive creative print design background. Looking forward to putting everything together and starting off a great new career in Web Design.

After studying graphic design 15 years ago I've been making WordPress websites for family, friends and my own projects, but the thing that has stopped me from doing it for clients (especially high paying) is the fear of their site getting hacked. Or even just a plugin conflict that I don't know how to resolve.
Don't website designers need to know all about how to see and clear issues with infected files, etc, in the back end. This is the thing I really need to study up on as I start this as a career! PS, what an excellent video this is!!!

This is amazing information, thank you! I had a good giggle when you said "kindly" is a scam word because In South Africa, this is a professional word we use in emails. For example - 'Kindly advise on a way forward' . We use British English, which tends to be overly polite lol

ROFLMAO Darrell I use craigslist so I guess I truly am old now at 57.....F&#k&ng funny, I use it to find free stuff for my garden! But with that said I have been doing part time web design since 1995 but WordPress is new to me, I only have a couple years of experience and still consider myself a beginner.....I have done four or five websites for money with WordPress but I need to up my game since my other business was pretty much killed by covid. I really have learned a lot from this video. So as I said before THANKYOU and THANKYOU to Dan Scott!!
