THYROID GLAND EXAMINATION - OSCE CHECKLIST
INTRODUCTION
1. Wash your hands
2. Introduce yourself to the patient
3. Confirm patient details including name
4. Briefly explain the procedure of neck examination
5. Gain confidence of the patient and consent
6. Make the patient seated on a chair
7. Expose neck and upper sternum of the patient
8. Gather equipments for examination
GENERAL INSPECTION
9. Inspect the patient at rest. Look clinical signs of underlying pathology
10. HANDS - Tremor and Radial pulse
FACE
11. Inspect face for Dry skin, excessive sweating, eyebrow loss
12. Inspect Eyes for lid retraction, Inflammation and Exophthalmos
13. Assess Eye movements and Lidlag
THYROID INSPECTION
14. Inspect midline of neck for thyroid enlargement,lump or scar
15. Ask the patient to swallow some water and repeat inspection
16. Ask the patient to protrude tongue and repeat inspection
THYROID PALPATION
17. Palpate in different positions and again on while swallowing and on protruding tongue
LYMPH NODES
18. Palpate neck for lymphnode enlargement
TRACHEA
19. Inspect for tracheal deviation and palpate to confirm
PERCUSSION OF THE STERNUM
20. Percuss downwards from sternal notch for evidence of retrosternal dullness
AUSCULTATION OF THYROID GLAND
21. Auscultate each lobe of thyroid gland for bruit
SPECIAL TESTS
22. Assess biceps reflex
23. Inspect for pretibial myxedema
24. Ask patient to stand with arms crossed to look for proximal myopathy
TO COMPLETE THE EXAMINATION
25. Thank your patient
26. Summarise your findings
27. Wash your hands
