Cheers Paul, that all sounds perfectly normal for the times! I recall my brother felling a tree, from a random local woods, putting a rope on it, tethering it to his Honda CB 125S ( which I still own) and towing the tree home, with me running alongside kicking it to keep it straight! And controlling its progress. We dried it, then planed it into a mast for our boat! Wish we could have filmed it. Cheers Kevin
Hi Paul. what a great story. Reminds me back in around 1967 I towed my mate's Ford pop behind my 1952 AJS mod 20 for a few miles. Fastest that old car had ever moved!
In the apprentice centre in Rolls Royce, Glasgow. Bikes were modified and rebuilt for fun. One lad Paul Burke had an RD250 and heavily modified the engine. His claim to fame was that he was clocked by the Police at a 115 mph! He was so proud of his speeding ticket, he had it framed. 😂
Great story! Sent shivers down my spine. I had a 1951 Reliant Regal van for a while at university in 1972 but it had engine troubles after a while so my dad agreed to tow it home with his Rover 3500S, which was quite a beast in its day. We had to get from Reading to near Redditch, some 90 miles. All went really well until my father relaxed and the speed started to creep up to 60mph and a bit above. That was unnaturally fast for a knackered three-wheeler and it was getting unstable. Communication was not great with dad listening to his 8 track stereo and smoking a cigar. Eventually, I contrived to break the (somewhat shabby) tow rope by braking sharply to escape what I thought would be a certain death. It took dad half a mile to notice I was missing😂😂. We made it home in one piece.
Nice one Paul, I remember in 1968 using my 1962 Cub, and towing a mate's BSA C11g that wouldn't start after work, we were both apprentices, I reckon we rode about 15 miles to his home, not a big deal but you just triggered a memory. Love the Cub stories, keep em coming!
Great story Paul, reminds me of some crazy things i used to do when i was younger and living in Wales. My best wishes to you from the Philippines ❤️👍💪😉😄😁🏁🏍️🛺🐏🇵🇭🏴⭐
Nice stories, Paul. Made me recall some of the things I did in my youth, which were probably not well thought out on my part. I never gained any notoriety or prominence though...only ridicule and involvement with various traffic authorities! Glad that your luck was better!
Wonderful. In '77ish I recovered a Matchless G80 outfit from Hartshead Moor on the M62 services and towed it to Harrogate, but I was in an Anglebox estate and I did not attempt any heroics.
Being towed on a bike is no fun, I can't imagine how he could hang on at anything more than 40mph and give you the thumb's up to keep going ! Good story though ! That story about the 500T towing a car rings a bell deep down in my memory somewhere ! We used to go to a few rallies in Wales back in the day and I'm pretty sure I heard someone telling the tale of the 500 Honda that towed a car at high speed, I didn't know whether to believe it or not but now I am !
I wonder if you were being told about my 500T towing the Mini - I have spent most of my life in Wales and attended the odd rally. The story was quite well known back in the day! Incidentally, my mate on the Cub couldn't let go - we had the rope tied at both ends!
@@paulhenshaw4514 There can't be many people in Wales that towed a car with a 500T ! As I remember it nobody wanted to believe it could be done but a couple of guys swore it was true and we just had to take their word for it. I'm glad I finally heard the original version from the guy that did it !
Hi Ian, that was almost certainly me and my 500T. My mate in the Mini had bikes too and liked telling people his stories, so no doubt word got around and it all seems to stack up! Nice to get some verification of sorts, too!
According to my mate, his Cub would do 90+ all day long! Amazing what 9:1 compression and a little megaphone silencer could do. Same lad met Elvis on a trip to IoM TT too. Mmmm.😂
I've only been towed once, on a Commando by my Father in a car. I can't remember how we attached the rope but l had to conteract the resulting forces through the steering and nearly crashed about 5 times but got home intact. However, l was so traumatised by the experience that I swore l would Never, Ever, again be towed on a bike and have stuck to that.
Greetings from Thailand, in 1976 I owned a Yamaha 200cc 2 stroke twin, I was on the A610 bypass testing to see how fast it would go, (75mph on the speedo), as I looked in the mirrors to see if there was any problem behind I could see a bike catching up with me, as the rider pulled along side me, he asked how fast we were going as his speedo didn't work, I told him 75, he said ok, thank you and proceeded to clear off, quite rapidly into the distance, at the time there was a clubman's race championship were riders competed with Bantams and Tiger Cubs, I think the Bantams were restricted to 125cc but am not sure, anyway, that Cub was doing a lot more than 75
That’s a fun and funny story…here across the pond I could tell a few tales of young and stupid…would I do them now? Oh hell no! And if my kids ever ask I’ll deny, deny, DENY!
When I was 17 I had a fairly new 67 Bonniville my mate had a Thunderbird I can't remember what year but it was 6 volt. We rode to Canberra and on the way home ( Sydney ) we were 80 miles from home and my Bonniville stopped, flat battery, we could'nt swap batteries so my mate towed me the 80 miles home.. It was the rectifier.. This is also a true story..
Mate picked up a 500 triton that had been lying for some time.he towed me on it threw town with his triumph herald car was a bit scarey the things you do in your teens

You think back how we did things when young,it scares me now!🤣👍

Fortunately that story is beyond the statuette of limitations. And miraculously your still alive to tell it. LOL.

Thanks Paul.
It's the tin can between the headers that gave the 500T its beans.

Hahaha! Good story Paul.
Great story. I've been towed by a Citroën 2CV on my 1977 Moto Guzzi California, but it was only for a couple of miles.
