- The Lumix GX80 / GX85, a Micro Four Thirds Mirrorless Camera.
This little guy continues to be such a blast to use and at that, creates some pretty great looking images.
I spoke on my thoughts earlier on this camera before, but wanted to go more in-depth on the portability aspect. Hence, why this camera is my go-to for travel.

I bought my gx85 just recently and so far it’s such a joy to use especially for travel.
That's so awesome!! What's your favorite lens?
I've owned two GX85's so far. The first one I picked up used for a good price that came with a few lenses and my intention was to sell the body and two other lenses to essentially get the 25mm 1.7 lens for free. I did however play around with the camera and really enjoyed using it and especially the great stills and video it took. Sadly I had a big trip coming up and already owned other cameras and couldn't justify keeping it.
But as time went by and I saw more videos about the GX85 pop up here and there. I couldn't forget how much I deep down really enjoyed this camera and made up my mind that if I saw one used for a good price that I'd pick one up again. Then luckily earlier this year I saw a practically new one come up on the used market here down under for less than $300 AUD and not even 100 clicks on the shutter. Bought it and recently took it to Thailand for a few weeks paired with the Panny 14mm 2.5 and Oly 25mm 1.8 and it was literally perfect.
I won't ever be selling mine as it's such a joy to use when on the road or in daily life. Glad to see you're getting great use of it and keep up the great videos! Warm regards from Australia :)
I totally get that! All this flashy stuff coming out and makes me want to try and grab new things, but this camera is one I still can’t let go.
There’s nothing like it in its price range and its ability to take it anywhere.
From Australia? That’s awesome. Thanks for watching!
Great job !!! I really enjoyed the photos you took.
Thank you!
Wonderful video Brandon! It came together very well. Keep up the great energy man. Cheers -
Joshua
Thanks brother!! Appreciate the comment
I bought it back on 2018 and oh boy I still love it. The camera is so portable I paired with the Pana Leica 25mm 1.4 and is awesome
Ooo, that lens, is one I want to pick up next!
I added the lumix gx85 on my list of cameras I want to try. I see that you enjoyed using it on your trip which got me curious. Lovely photos. Subscribed 🇵🇭🙂
Awesome video, Brandon!! Didnt know about this camera! thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! It's definitely hidden in the shadows but love it
@@BrandonSoum my pleasure! yeah those are the best!😉
I just ordered mine! I was on the fence because while it’s pretty inexpensive for a camera it’s still v expensive but this video was the shove i needed! i have a canon rebel 9(i believe) that i love but it’s a bulky and very simple.
Great video! Really well done )
I wonder if the mistere around the GX80/85 cage has been resolved?
(It's just that I've been desperately looking for this cage for quite some time and I have the impression that it's not available anywhere, not even second hand...)
Looking to get back into M43 with another gx85 or gx9. The 14mm is solid and is the loawa 17mm manual lense.
Great video!
great video, one of my biggest regrets of selling my gx80. I think I'll have to buy one in the next few months. congrats man
Thank you! It's good that it's still not too bad price-wise in the current market. I still enjoy using it during my travels.
this was a beautiful video, i love your shots and your insight, thank you!
im a begginer to photography, and portability is really important to me. I currently shoot with either my phone, my crappy little olympus digicam, or my mother's nikon d3100 which is a wonderful camera, but really heavy and hard to carry. I'd also love a camera that can shoot some nice video, and right now the gx85 is a dream come true for me.
I hope to get my hands on one someday, but right now, living in brazil, the import price is just too high unfortunately :(
thank you for the wonderful video!! subscribed :)
Do what you can and get yourself shooting! Thanks for watching!
What a cute camera! Great review!
Thank you!
Very nice video and images.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it!
Greats videos about the GX85 / GX80.
I am definitely interested in your new travel camera :)
I have a GX9 for dayly usage and an OM-1 which is use for landscape and wildlife. Honestly when compared side by side the OM-1 is not much bigger than the GX9. But it is thicker and doesn't get out of my camera bag as easily as the GX9. Also the GX9 is more discret and doesn't look like a real camera.
I am hesitating between the two for a trip planned in 2023.
Sweet combo! I dig what you got rocking there. My travel kit may or may not be similar to yours :)
Guess we’ll find out soon. Thank you for watching!
Hi Brandon
I've an Olympus E-M10 Mark IV with some lenses including a 60 macro or a 40-150 tele, but I want a camera to take with me all time, and past tuesday I bought a GX80 on eBay to use with a 9 mm MFT lens to all terrain photography.
I'll tell you about this when I test on the field.
Have a good photo day 📷
what lens you used? for gx85
Love your content! Quick question, any chance you could come up with a video on short on cleaning your camera! I would love to see your process and I struggle with it sometimes lol. ALSO, what lens do you use? And what's an inexpensive lens that you recommend?
Thanks for watching! My quick go-to is the Lumix 12-35 as it’s easy to make fast changes to my composition but like to carry lighter for photography.
Any manual lenses from Artisan brands I love!! I still kept them from my other systems when I am able to get more cameras.
Currently considering to buy this camera or the gx9.
Aside from the price gap, is there any significant reason why i should get gx9?
From what I know, they are fairly similar but the Gx9 does have a tilting EVF & 4 megapixels more than the Gx85.
Tilting EVF was something I considered for other angles when shooting but, it wasn't super necessary for me.
Where can you buy this camera with double lens kit aside from amazon and e-bay? ToT I need this for my photojournalism career
It’s really tough as it seems many people hold onto their cams these days; You’d have to hunt flea markets or pawn shops, I found mine online. Just keep your eyes peeled! I recommend getting a mid range zoom for photo journalism.
Good luck!!
Good stuff!
Thanks!! I appreciate your comment
That's a big pocket lol. Women don't get them so the alternative for me is a 7L purse, but that does let me pack a Laowa 7.5mm and Olympus 75mm, as well if I go out with a smaller body and the Oly 17mm f/1.8. As a side note, the boon of winter is constant access to jackets with big pockets so I can stick an Olympus Pen with any of the pancake Panasonic primes (and 17mm f/1.8) in there. I can actually fit an E-M5 body in there as well, but the Pen-F has more JPEG control and I prefer to daily-carry the latter.
In terms of going out with friends, anything between an E-M1ii and Pen Mini E-PM1 works for me paired with the aforementioned lenses, though the 17mm f/1.2 does have its fair share of usage since it balances perfectly with the E-M1ii. I might actually get a GX85 soon since I like the 20mm f/1.7 but would like to take advantage of the Panasonic DFD with it and the 14mm f/2.5, since they're both slow on my Oly bodies. It'll also be my first Panasonic body.
Anyway, I like your style and am pleased to see that it's only been refined from your first POV street photography video. Subscribed!
I figured that pro wouldn’t be applicable to everyone haha
The Pen life from Olympus is some of my favorites too! Thank you for your comments, I’m really appreciative that perhaps maybe I have grown in my photography from that 1st video :)
Thank you again!
hey do u think i should buy lumix gx85 or canon ixus 285?? i really wanted the one w the best feature for pictures
For simplicity and easy point, shoot experience: Canon.
For more tactical, manual control feel: Lumix
@@BrandonSoum wdyt about lumix gf10
Lovely tones in the daytime shots, do you have a filter ?
I did not use a filter actually!
Where didi you bought the strap, it looks so good!
The strap is by Peak Design! Specifically the leash
Are the photos shown sooc?
I'm on my second gx85 the first one got wet in Mexico. I love the size of m43.
Yes, yes. M43 is staying with me for life haha
Great review. What was the talking head shot on?
Thank you. This was shot on Olympus EM5 Mark III
@@BrandonSoum wow impressive - how does that look outside of the studio?
@@jaymills1720 I'd say it shines the best outdoors. Colors are rich and skin tones are nice. It matched well with my Canon systems then.
Many of the clips in this video was shot on the Oly EM5 III : ua-cam.com/video/XbMTGF398oM/v-deo.html
Awesome little camera travel but this peek my interest for street photography 😊...this And a nice prime and u are stealthy
That’s great to hear, give it a shot! I am sure you will enjoy.
Thanks for watching!
@@BrandonSoum sure man when I get some spare cash ....I am also a m50 user...M50 mk1
@@TheUrbandilema An M50 is a good street camera too!! Slap the Ef m 22mm and you’re set
@@BrandonSoum much tanx again yea I have been watching the lens or the efs 24mm...thanks for your feedback..see u In the next video
The only knock against the gx85 is the weight. You get use to it, but in the beginning, it strained my wrist.
I've only ever used mine with a camera strap, I recommend having one!
What's that blue backpack that you use?
It’s a bag from Brevite!
I have gx9 but still this camera is too heavy for me to carry around and take the joy of travelling 😢
Oh no! The Gx9 is slightly beefier than the Gx85 from the build, is it heavier too? What lens are you using?
Brandon what camera settings did you use?
Always on manual; usually shot f4 and up for day, street photos and lowest I could for night to retain light. Tried to not go lower than 1/150 for shutter to reduce blur
Do you think that this camera is good for filming concerts ?
It’s possible but with a really fast and likely expensive glass. I wouldn’t recommend it as I’d look into ASPC and Full frame bodies for low light
I love photography but sadly iam still waiting to get first camera
Get started with anything you can. Even if it’s a simple point and shoot or phone.
@@BrandonSoumdo you think the sony a6400 is a good starter?
Love mine, but I wish it had some better bokeh
Def look into manual lenses that have a faster F-Stop. Such as f1.2 or 1.4 or even f0.95! They are out there and bring the blur for you. Meike or 7artisan lenses.
Got mine a week ago and it's a delight. Picked up the 25mm 1.7 and got the 12-32mm kit lens with the body and just
Yeah
So good
Nice! Light and compact setup
Slap a Panasonic Leica 15mm f1.7 Summilux on it and you will be amazed.
Literally the Lens I ordered a few days ago. Possible review on it soon!
Get the hook! Surprised you use the supposedly notoriously horrible Olympus 17mm f/2.8 lens.👀
