Wrong! Back in the late 90's /early 00's I was working in DiFara's neighborhood for a few days and went there for lunch one day after 12:30pm. It was not packed, in fact I was the only person in there. The pizza was not the way it is made today, no basil, no buffalo mozzarella and no freshly grated cheese. It was just a typical NY slice made with caned sauce and loaf mozzarella. What remains in my memory is Dom behind the counter, the place being rundown outdated and dirt and me siting at a sticky table thinking "is it safe to eat this". Somehow Dom later changed the way he made pizza but he never changed the place.

Di Fara is extremely delicious. My slice came out perfect, the square came out like goop. The operators are the kind of people who are riding then hype tho which can be frustrating. They show up late, take their time getting started, and doesn’t matter if the pizza comes out bad. The slice was fantastic and they deserve the recognition, but don’t anticipate respect or good service
Places like DiFara are not meant to serve tourists or not meant to be perfect. Anthony Bourdain has said that he kind of regrets making local places famous. It’s common for many local places to be flawed even if it can be very good.
Finally visited DiFara yesterday with a friend visiting from California. Her son had read that this was the best pizza in NYC. After we sat down and ordered a pie, I realized that I had actually eaten from DiFara many years ago. A few short blocks from here was an NBC Studio soundstage where I used to work on a television series (a daytime drama aka "soap opera"). Whenever we would go overtime (which was quite often in television production) they would order many pies from DiFara's. Always remembered how tasty this pizza is. Worth the trip!
