- Dandelion Water Droplet Refraction Photography!
In this video, I'll be putting all we have learned over the last two years together to create some dandelion water droplet refraction photography. We try some new techniques that give different results that you may or may not like, we all like different things and that's what is great about photography.

This video was recorded before my family and I self-isolated, we are all fine and recovering well. Thank you for all the well wishes :) YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!
I was just going to say you're looking good. Glad all is going well! Oh, great stuff too.
Thanks for this I've just discovered this although I shoot from the dark side ie Nikon I have subscribed and hopefully once this terrible situation is over. We may bump into each other over Doxey Marshes, Stafford. I'm normally lurking around that area for most of early spring and summer.
Due to the fact it's within walking distance.
As a macro boy you'll have a ball over the marshes
Great video - off to try tomorrow!
Awesome :)
Bravissimo!🇮🇹❤️🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Great ideas. Thanks.
Thanks
That purple color was really nice.
Brilliant many thanks 😊
Thank you 😊
Thanks Stewart! Keep up the good work.
Thank you 😊
Excellent!
Finally someone has found a use for dandelions.
I couldn't find a syringe so I picked up a needle point glue injector from my wood working store.
I put my flower setup on an old corrugated plastic sign (18" x 24") . Then when I want to adjust it, I slide the setup rather than the camera.
Your right about playing.....i just been playing around with different lighting set ups and it's amazing what difference a simple adjustment can achieve.
Interesting results, and the advice about using the straw is very useful, thank you!
I was mesmerized by these images and needed to look at them a few times to really appreciate how beautiful they are. Thank you for sharing.
thank you for sooo much info I will have to watch all of these again and again
Informative video, Thanks
Very nice video. Lots for us to play with in lockdown
You have done me proud master love love love your getting to good 👌😉👌😉👌
Thanks my friend :)
Nice work !
An excellent video. I really liked the way you showed the process you go through. Thank you.
Thank you for the creative video. I will try this as soon as the dandelions are there.
Please show me your results :)
Great work, thanks for sharing.
Very very nice , Thank you
Great tutorial. Makes me want to try with a bit of confidence! Thanks
Thank you very much
You are welcome
I've just found your channel thanks to my favourite photographer Thomas Heaton. I'm really into macro photography, but yet as a beginner. Your channel is so inspiring. Greetings from self-isolation in Poland.
Thank you, I've just watched his video lol.
Hello Stewart...I want to thank you for this wonderful vdo. Hope I can use these techniques for my photography. Best wishes from India 🙏
Glad you are all keeping well. A fun and intuitive video, Thank you.
We are all good, thanks.
Stewart, you are a very patient person. And you made it look like you were having fun. Makes me want to try it; this next summer. Beautiful images you produced makes me want to do it. I enjoy your blog. Thanks.

Thank you great video learnt a lot going hunting for dandelion clocks 🤩
Thank you so much for this very inspiring video. I really appreciate your channel.
Thank you.
Thank you for teaching us
It's my pleasure
Thank you for sharing.
very creative ideas, thanks for sharing
Thank you! 😊
That is good advice; experiment. Slight changes of lighting, focus, etc. can make big changes to macro images. I've got a 180 macro that I haven't tried on my EOS R yet. This encourages me to try some of water droplet refraction photography this weekend.
Love the videos, thanks and stay safe
A very interesting and inspiring movie 👍
Plastic straw is a brilliant solution for folding the flower, great vid buddy!
I have a better solution for a future video.
glad to hear you and your family are well.great video, thanks for the tip, very cool...
Thank you John.
keep getting better. I so want to try this thanks for the helpful info. get well and stay well.
Thank you :)
Stunning work
Great tutorial, Stuart. I hope you and your family are doing well and on the mend. Take care.
Thank you.
Nice to hear you’re all well! Keep save and keep up the good work.
Thanks Frank :)
This is so involving! Thanks!
ive just started to try to do macro photography, and i find stuarts videos very informative, great ideas, top man
I have owned the 65mm lens for years. You can fine tune the focus with the magnification ring once you are in the ball park. Hope you have already found this out. A focus slider is another option. Love the vids. and those of your mate LH.
I'm keeping an eye on the dandelions and as soon as they are ready I'm going to do this. Many thanks for the video it's really interesting 👍
I enjoyed this very much.
Thanks :)
Great video
Very useful video,I wish health and wellness to you and your family
Thank you.
Hi Stewart, Many thanks for your great video! I love the way you're showing the experiment processing. It's stunning and really useful for me to have a try.
You're patient and meticulous in your great macro experiment to get what you love! Stay safe and good health!
Brilliant!
I like it. Looks nice.
Thanks
Nice vid Stewart, I have subscribed and joined the FB group and uploaded a couple of my oil on water shots.
Awesome :)
Very cool Stewart. Think I'll give this a try.
Greetings all the way from South Texas, buddy! Awesome images, Stewart!
Thank you :)
Oh man, I missed these, thank you Stewart.
Thank you.
WoW, these photo’s are beautiful!
Thank you.
You’re a patient man. Beautiful pics mate worked out well.
Thank you.
Nice video, no spiders lol
It's a wonderful microphoto. I have subscribed to the channel. Followed Instagram. Thank you
awesome @stewart
Really enjoyed this video, some great lockdown ideas for me to finally use my macro lens, thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Having only discovered your channel since lockdown (landscape photography is my thing) I thought I'd give this a try today. Dude much respect to you coz you make it look easy and it is not. I'm hoping I have one out of the 200 + I took that is presentable. I'm gonna have to try again another day because I want that perfect shot. Hope your family and you are all on the mend.
Thank you, keep on trying you will get one :)
just goes to show the right video gets you a new subscriber so here I am thanks Stewart , just the way you narrate the video more in laymans term was really helpful. Also by showing the setup process the pros and cons helped more than the shoot in some ways.
also keep the out takes they helped me chuckle in these strange times any way thanks again ill try some of what you have shown and fire a pic over if I manage to do half as good as this stay safe.
Neil coventry
Thank you Neil :)
Nice work mate, you got some lovely images. Gonna have to give this a go, just gotta get out of my water splash photography zone 😁
Thank you Stewart, I have been inspired by your video to have a go myself - mine isn't anything like as good as your own but just wanted to say a big thank you!
Thank you Alan :)
Wow, looks great, it will be my next project! I don't think we have dandelions here either, but I will try something else in my garden 😉
Great to hear you’re all well. We have just about self isolated ourselves so I’m looking at some indoor macro activity. Going to give this a go over the next couple of days. Love your work mate. Take care.
Thank you Brad :)
Thanks, Stewart Great video, lots of trial and error to get the shot but that's ok with me...
Awesome Photography. Can you tell me the Lens settings and focus setting for this experimental work
Hey Stewart I’m using the seed of the meadow goatee looks like dandelion clock but much bigger and with more visible structure 😀 cheers Claudia
Hi Steve. Great job, I really like what you do in macrophotography. I have been watching your channel for a long time and I really like what you do. And of course I draw a lot of inspiration from your materials. Keep it up. Greetings from Poland :-)
Super video! You explain things so well even a rookie like me can understand it. Can I manage it myself? Well looking forward to trying. Never looked forward to the darn weeds showing up before. 😉
Thank you :)
Why don't you use a focus rail under your camera? Something like a Manfrotto 454 or similar from Amazon, will allow you to move the camera small amounts instead of picking up your tripod for gross adjustments. A two axis rail will allow both front to back and side to side movement.
1: I don't have one. 2: I don't like them and 3 most the time I'm hand-held.
Stewart Wood Understood. But you were on a tripod and the composed setup would have been so appropriate for a focus rail. I’m just learning the basics so can’t represent any experience based knowledge. Nice images.
@@scottmerkle2832 I tend to not buy anything until I must have it.
Love the video, what sort of torch do you use it gives a great look.thanks
Great video nice job
I'm really enjoying your videos! Thanks so much for the effort you put into them. I wonder if you've tried mixing glycerin into the water used to spray or syringe onto the plant matter? It should thicken it nicely while retaining perfect clarity...the increased surface tension should allow the droplets to retain their shape longer.
great video, thank you! I've never been so excited for weeds to start growing! Our fields are presently covered in snow. Is there an alternative to dandelions I can try for this?
Great videos! And you tell me what size needle you use for the water drops please?
Thanks!
Hi Stuart, glad to hear you & your family are recovering well. Like you I also live in the Birmingham area & also in lock-down. I've been looking for a way to try something new as I'm a novice. I'm thinking of getting a Canon 60mm Macro lens. Would I be able to achieve photo's similar to your with that lens do you think? Thank you for sharing your skills with us - great video!
Thanks Stewart, this was very informative and piqued my interest in this style of macro work. Like and sub for you today. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the support.
show us the same photo but with your old Canon camera and you're 50 ml lens and your old extension tubes. I think it would be cool to see the differences.
Great tutorial. What size syringe & needle do you use.
you need to cut off the excess petals of the fluff, which interfere with the clarity of the image and create reflexes on the drop
brilliant :)
Thanks mate.
Love your show what lense are you using
Wow! This was so amazing to watch. I've always wondered how people got these shots. I also did not realize that there were "clock" pieces (now that all makes sense) and thus how it look like one little "flower bud". I have lots and lots of dandelions here in Canada ... so I will have no problem getting some to use. I do have one question about the plasticene. How are you attaching the dandelion clock to it??? I couldn't really see how you did it. Do you pinch the bottom of the clock into the plasticene?
ok lets see what you can do with baked bean macro while you in quarantine
lmao
Very Pretty
Focus Stacking or a PC lens would give more depth of Field.
Maybe some gels and playing with white balance would add something.
Once decided on - the lighting needs to locked down...
Another great tutorial that I will be trying thankyou.Could you possibly tell me where to get that mini tripod with clamp,I have looked on your gear page but cant find it.
Hi in one of your macro photography you use some small macro background cards. Where can I find those?
😍
Another wonderful tutorial, Stewart, thanks so much! What are those little stands holding the clips? Almost looks like a wire stuck into a cube.
Thank you, they are called memo clip holders.
@@StewartWoodArt Very clever! Thanks!
I tried this to day and gave up and couldn't get the flower sharp in the seed i Used a Rose was it to Small?
You are using a dandelion seed. The clock is the entire head of the flower when it goes to seed! Other than terminology I like your video!
Hey Steve, thanks for this awesome video. Can you help with a link or something for the continous lighting led mini-projector? Thanks
Just look on amazon for LED video light.
Hi there Stewart, I have been in lockdown in New Zealand for 6 weeks now and have been following your videos during this time. I am very much a novice photographer, so have found your videos informative and easy to follow. Do you have any tips for post processing your images?
Thank you Linda, I have videos on my channel about post processing.
Good Morning! Thanks for the inspiring video : ) . Can you please post a link to the second lens you use? It sounds interesting, and I'd like to research, but couldn't quite catch its name. Thank You!
It's the Canon MP-E 65mm lens.
Where to buy that table small tripod?
I did some dandelion stuff today, I couldn't get the reflection to come out. maybe i used to much milk.. yours looks way better
Keep on trying :)
Nice channel Steward! I subscribe it. Great tecnics. Wich is the led lights panel yuo used in vide? Is an YONGNUO. Model? Thanks! Andrea from Italy. Today I Mad my first experiment with mi macro lens 105 nikkor and dandelion..
