Used to anneal aluminum for raising vessels by heating with a propane torch and using a popsicle stick touched to the metal to check the temp. Cut the round end off the stick. Touch the flat cut end to the metal. If it chars, its hot enough. Don't quench. Work it cold. Most of your white metals are notoriously hot short. Dang stuff spalls on a grinder wheel too...

I met Dewey last summer during Ethan Harty and Matt Martis evolution of tool making class. Shawn Cunningham was also there to supervise. Hes a cool dude, who's down to earth. I wish him a speedy recovery! You rock Dewey, stay strong. We love ya bro!

The first attempt really looked like a giant allen wrench haha, but I liked how it's turning out in the latest try

I have not done much with aluminum. I work it at night and forge it when it just barely starts to glow a very slight red. I've seen some guys who forge in the daytime use pine scraps to check the temp since you can't see any color at all in the daytime. When it just starts to smoke when touched to the aluminum then they start hammering. I've also seen some people working on smaller pieces just work it like copper, annealing it now and then and cold forging it.

I'm pretty sure you can work aluminum at room temperature as long as you anneal it periodically to deal with work hardening.

Alonimiumloum suck cause it dissipates heat so quickly. Insanely fast actually. Alot of the time if its not thick enough you won't have the time to put it on the anvil before the heat is gone. And when you put it on the anvil if it's flat with a big contact patch the anvil will just suck the heat right out of it. Good idea to heat the anvil before working. You won't hurt the anvil cause anouloninilom forges at so low temperatures.

I’m in Northeast Ohio as well. I’m in the process of moving and building all my equipment to expand an existing business into Blacksmithing. Have some stuff. Still need an ASO and a Forge body. Already built a nice double burner. I’ll tell you what happened to me in 1984 when I was trying to fold aluminum like Damascus. Bad idea. May have been because it was a hard stone surface fortunately there wasn’t a lot there.

A lot like watching Obi-wan with a brand new padawan who eventually learns to heed the master.

Aluminum have a lower melting point. It's definitely more ductile than steel. But much less in strength.
So when u raise the aluminum temperature, it's strength drops dramatically. Steel does behave the same but at higher temperature than that.
P.s; make sure you heat treat it, it will have a residual stresses, After cold working. Otherwise, it will fracture and fail.

My mentor told me that aluminum is ready to forge when wood slips on the surface of the metal as though it is greasy. I myself have never tried it but, it's possible.

Leave the aluminum for "Casting"? It's structure is to soft in my opinion. The anvil is getting coated in aluminum.
