So happy that he’s getting more recognition, genesis owusu is something special.
The guitarist mesmerized me. Shredded my face off with a guitar from 3022 and working 100 pedals IN HEELS?!
TFW you realize it's Kirin J Callinan from the 'Big Enough' video because there are actually just 14 musicians in Australia
JxC -- So glad it's not just me saying that!! I was trying to describe that for a comment but you WIN.
Guitarists name is Kirin J Callinan, he also releases his own music.
Yeah I was mesmerized too by each member of his band. Talk about talented! Wow!
Heels were impressive but where’s the shred? That bassist looks like Freddy mercury tho!!
Someone at The Late Show is obviously an Aussie music fan. Gang of Youths, and now Genesis Owusu all in a month!
Glass Animals are British, but sure we’ll claim ‘em. We call that a “Crowded House Move”.
I'd bet a pretty penny that they listen to Point of Origin on Alt-Nation SXM 🤪
A part of me hopes that Jon Batiste has some input on the shows musical guests.
Dope Lemon may be next.
@@Dragownage hahah whoops! They are so popular in Aus I hadn’t ever thought they couldn’t be Aussie!
Genesis really dropped 2021's album of year as his debut album, absolute mad lad.
Best hip hop record of 2021… so good. No skips.
And it occurs to me that maybe it’s not even hip hop.. his music defies category
@@baseboardmatt Isn’t this just how pop music sounds?
@@baseboardmatt “A song about fishing” is literally an R&B sea shanty. This man is beyond categorization 😂
Been bumping this jam all last year. Waitin on ya is another fave of mine off the album. Love to see him and Yves Tumor together at a show
Kirin Callinan's performance was mesmerizing. Guitar screams that reminded me of Robert Fripp, and boy did he rock those heels!
The lyrics of that song are so powerful. I look forward to hearing more from Genesis Owusu. Unfortunately his album is sold out right now.
Smoooth relevance. Love the groove!
Dude knows how to move in high heels. Respect.
So happy to see y'all on Colbert!!
Wow, he’s Ghanaian 🇬🇭.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Kirin J Callinan bring it back again!
Genesis can do no wrong 🔥🔥
Anybody else hearing early Lenny Kravitz with a hint of Tricky in this. First time I've heard or even heard of this dude/outfit but am liking it and am off now to have a listen to more. Fingers crossed
I just commented that!!
Should have read comments first!
This song is so smooth! Wow!!
I can't believe there's a Kirin foot mic, this is genius
Finally genesis owusu gets the recognition he deserves
The amount of hate comments on here worry me
Guitar dude living his best life.... plot twist he is genesis owusu😀
Great song
Last time I was here I left a negative comment, and honestly I was probably manic AND jealous. I love everyone in this band. My bad.
Good on you for saying that!
@@ellie-tk4jy got to be real, and try harder to be a decent person.
I'm new to this artist but this one mesmerizing performance from all these amazingly talented artists (esp the guitarist straight outta cowboy bebop) and Gensis himself it was an instant favorite and apparently dropped a great debut album at the beginning of this year so this my new anthem for 2022
Just got into this dude's music! FIRE!
Lol
I had never seen a guitarist work so hard at barely being heard.
Yea I was waiting on some serious shredding to happen w this guy
He's a very showy singer-songwriter from Australia called Kirin J Callinan. He makes absolutely amazing pop tunes. Check out S.A.D. by him.
Kirin on Guitar!!!!!
genius
Let's go my guy 🇦🇺🔥
Genesis needs to make a return after the last year hes had performing and becoming a master at it too!
Ayyy thanks for having Aussie acts on your show!
First time listening/seeing this band. Super dig it. I'm loving the diversity in the music you're bringing to the show. Keep on keeping on 💚
Same here , first time hadn't heard of him. This old lady totally loves this music.
It's a vibe
Wow, this cool looking, red suited cat has got it going on. The guitarist is the only time I take my eyes off Genesis.
WOW! I LOVED THOSE JEANS WITH THE HEELS? I'M IMPRESSED BY THE MUSICALITY......I'M GOING TO LOOK HIM UP.
Was not prepared to be seduced by this song but it just settled right in before I noticed what was going on and now i love it
I'm a straight Stacey but the man is heels is doing something for me. Never fancy men in heels but that guitarist is fine.
So dope!!
One day I will be on this show. Idk when or how, but I will be performing one of my songs in the Ed Sullivan Theater.
They gotta release the uncensored version on here... those few molecules alone are keeping this from pure artistic bliss.
C'mon Colbert, the FCC ain't here and youtube would give y'all a pass for so, so, fucking so much more
*LYRICS*
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains, yeah
I hope the stress don't kill me
They chip away my heart, expect a coin to fill me
Oh man, my joy so filthy
I pray to some, I'm still me
But boy these demons gleaming, scheming, preaching, leave them
We'll deceive him, he's believing, say we're on his team then
But I've been bleeding, wounds have deepened when I chained my freedom
Reason weakened, beaten, ripping curls like I'm fucking Keenan
They think I'm beaming, I'm the beacon of the young and decent
When I'm in this shell committing treason
You see the truth is that I'm often blue
So many cracks in the ceiling, I tried to mend them with glue
What a profession
Sleep in sessions, curse or blessings, need refreshing
See progression 'cause I beat depression
They throwing pills like M&M's and I'm hoping they don't relapse
On stage, the crowd yelling, don't get lost in feedback
My boo said I should take it slow, wish I could heed that
Without the burning of a fucking greenback
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains, yeah
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains, yeah
I do this and I do that
On call from sun till moon crack
My phone can never go flat
Who knows where else my work at
I miss this and I miss that
Birthdays, first steps and gift wraps
Hope I don't miss my first dance
Somebody put me in the circus, I'm the world's best juggler
Only two hands, pretend that it don't fuck with my jugular, I'm a new man
While praying that my music will bubble up, this my Truman
Show will rock the boat, I'm still subtler, where's the movement?
I fight for my existence
Brick wall with my persistence
I hate to say I play Russian Roulette with my resistance
Play it void of all assistance
My life, my love, my business
A goon playing charades inside the face of corporate systems
I sanitised organic ties for my arise in modern times
I can't deny internal lies in hopes that I'd be televised
I sacrifice a gentle life for goals that leave me terrified
But pray this doesn't lead to my demise
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains, yeah
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains
When it looks so gold, but it feels so cold inside these chains, yeah
Gold, cold chains
Gold, cold chains
Gold, cold chains
Gold, cold chains
His live voice is so good.
Tv on the radio wants to have a talk with this guy
underrated song!!!
Solid band behind this guy. Lots of talk about show pony Kirin, no one mentioning the rolled gold legend on the bass... Touch Sensitive, Van She anyone?!!
Just noticed him.
touch sensitive is mad underrated, watched his DJ set live a few years ago, he even shredded the bass on his set. one of my favourite performances
Whoa, is that a Roland guitar synth?!? Fucking sweet!
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
I'm making a new playlist for 2022 with all the music featured on the Late Night Shows I watch. ;-)
Juxtaposition of
Heels and
Cowboy Hat
Mad Ax!
Damn...listen to this often, love the Brother with the Freddy Mercury T-shirt!
David Wallace from Dunder Mifflin corporate playing bass!
Casual Kirin J Callinan and Theo Katzman in the band. Goddamn.
Bruh there's no Theo Katzman here, I think you're getting mixed up with Touch Sensitive
@@eufrizz oh no!! Sorry for that. Coulda sworn it was theo. Thanks for clearing it up, is his music good?
1:12 he is an Eminem fan😊
He is good......that red jacket tho... and them stilts
Great album title :D
The guitarist stole the show.
Yup. Absolutely mesmerizing.
I Watched this at 1.5x speed.
Interesting.
what guitar is the cowboy hat guitarist using?
According to earlier comment Roland guitar synth, Roland G-707
Nice suit

Interesting guitar synth. World's longest bass neck too. Not bad. Probably don't need the Strat.
💕 💕 it!
Very Lenny Kravitz 🤓✌️‼️
Wow.. Nothing about this sounds quite how I expect it to....
I liked it better when Super Nintendo Owusu did it
So he's got Billy Corgan on keyboards, Freddie Mercury's & Flea's long lost son on bass and the scariest non-binary 80s cowboy I've ever seen on roland synth guitar.
for the effects of the guitar player, they need to calm way down... not doing THAT much there buddy
🇳🇬 🆎
First!?!
This made late night tv?TV? Prince lesser known cousin
Is it just me or is this terribly mixed?
Its a live performance.
Zzzzzzzzzz wake me up when this Clown comes out of his Chains.
chorus in falsetto is nice, the rest of the singing is meh... weird
Honestly I think the mix in this makes his voice fall a bit flat. The studio version has more intricate layers to the vocals that make them pop a lot more! His album is really great
@@enriqueortiz5036 makes sense
The Band is interesting but he's marginal - nice falsetto but for the rest of it he might as well be reading the phone book.
Ughh.. no man
It sounds like Gold Chains is attempting to imitate Prince. Never going to happen! There is and will only ever be one musician as talented as Prince.
Aaah 👀 oh my times have changed. Weird af
Great music upstage by stilettos. Why would a man willing wear those???
Because he’s a boss?
Or because Yanis Marshall?!
I don't know, probably for the same reason a woman would wear those? 🤔 🧐
Placebo says hello
and somewhere in Wales, Nicky Wire suddenly gets goosebumps.
prince wannabe
Not really. He’s an Australian artist doing his completely own thing. He made experimental hip hop, neo-soul, smooth R&B. he’s not a prince junior; he’s unique.
Bro, who wouldn't wanna be Prince?
This legend is making amazing music, doing his own thing.. just like prince
i get you
If you actually believe this listen to his album Smiling With No Teeth, it’s extremely diverse and no two songs sound the same
The sound is terrible..
Meh...not that good
Too advanced for me. I came looking for something old-fashioned like a talented singer. My bad.
Yeah, and Genesis is that. Are we watching the same thing??
He literally is a talented singer with a good falsetto? This performance is almost identical to studio. That’s impressive. So either you don’t like it because you’re an oldhead who hates everything new or you stereotyped him as a “talentless rapper” because of his skin colour.
@@ihatehumans5185 That’s what i’m saying bro. I guarantee if it was a white guy with a stubbled beard or something singing the same exact song, this guy would be clapping for it
@@ihatehumans5185 Also, the “old head” ad hominem is tired. Fine, young singers are on the scene but rarely are they popular. Black popular music has roots in a legacy that naturally separated the wheat from the chaff because the great majority of pop singers came from the church. Additionally, if they became popular, they toured and did live shows - sometimes 10 each week, without “studio” or electronic/digital effx, meaning they had to really know how to sing live repeatedly in full voice to maintain audiences. For what Owusu did on the show, even if it largely matches the studio recording, that wasn’t even impressive for folks who appreciate true vocalists. Don’t hate. There is simply no comparison. He’s ok for what he does but he is more gimmicky, true to the fashion of his peers, than impressive.
If they had a slightly better keyboard player, he could quite easily fill in for other members. That "guitarist" in the cowboy hat was the biggest waste of space and pedals I've ever seen. Not the worst song I've heard this decade but still pretty unimpressive.
Kirin jealousy I see
You don't see though.
Yeah live versions are always gonna be unpredictable. I still like this but would pick the studio version any day of the week. It’s a masterpiece
Satire?
Ah yes, this certainly is some form of loosely-named 'music.'
