I haven’t written a full in-depth review for a movie in a long time but Soul left me with a lot to say. Let me just get something out of the way first. I was really excited for this movie and went in with high expectations! I love Pixar pretty much all their movies other than a few. I also generally like animation movies because I mostly grew up with them and it’s been cool over the years seeing animation for these movies get better and better! I’m also a big fan of this movie’s director Pete Doctor! The man knows how to make beautiful and compelling movies and stories that are often really emotional! From Up to Inside Out and Monsters Inc. He knows the work and you could argue he perfected it. So I went in into this movie with a lot of high expectations, one of them being that I predicted that Soul may be my favourite movie from the entire year! Cause when I heard about the premise of the movie I was super intrigued and I felt like I resonated with it. I’m happy to say that this is a movie a lot of people will resonate with and connect with and even I resonated with it at some of its messages. Soul for me felt like one of Pixar’s most ambitious films yet. It’s wildly different then what you would expect from a family animated movie. I would argue that this movie is aimed at adults or students who are looking for explanations or purposes In their life. That’s how mature it is, and I think if young kids would watch this movie they wouldn’t like it and it would be far from them being able to understand this story and the messages it presents. This movie is really complex, deep, intimate, personal and unfortunately too complicated for its own good. I personally might have a disadvantage with understanding the story of this movie because I find myself often getting confused and not understanding what the filmmakers and writers of movies want to convey to me. So that might be an issue with me and not the movie’s but, I was pretty confused with the story and everything that is presented. Nonetheless, let me go back on how bold this movie is though because I honestly wasn’t expecting this from Pixar. This movie has a lot of layers it explores, it’s fast-paced at just ninety minutes and wildly different from anything else in its field. So it’s important to give credit where credits due. I didn’t even get started on how breathtaking and incredible the animation for this movie is. I could say so much more on the level of detail Pixar and their entire team put into with there animation for this movie. The movie was also unexpected at times when it gave me vibes from the movie Freaky Friday and how the events from this movie were similar to that movie at parts. It also had great music that it presented, astonishing world-building and well-realized characters that you end up caring for. Overall Soul was one of the most unique movies Pixar has to offer. With a dense and compacted plot and messages that will leave audiences pondering long after its over, humour that works for most of the time, clever dialogue, characters with a lot of personalities and just gorgeous animation makes Soul one of the best movies of the year. Unfortunately for me though I felt like I couldn’t appreciate and grasp all the messages, morals and the overall story that the movie had to offer. That’s alright though because I still had an amazing time with Soul!
The most staggering moment, as you pinpointed, has to be when Soul encapsulates the “zone.” Beyond animation, I was just in awe. My “zone,” isn’t even music, it’s writing but I just felt so warm; this movie was worth watching for this scene alone.

I thought that Coco was better, but I totally get the fingers reference. Being a musician watching actors pretend to play an instrument is always annoying, but these animated characters were spot on.
As a kid, my favorite movies were Robocop, Spirited Away, The Iron Giant, and the first 2 X-Men movies. I was able to understand the references to the Civil Rights movement that X-Men was making when I was like 5 so if kids can rap their heads around that, I think they can understand Soul.
At this time in my life, early on into my career, I have followed the job that I felt was the spark in my life. But recently I've questioned if I was completely happy and if I made the right decision. And then this movie came along and it has made me really question what the spark is... and what it truly means. Hopefully it gives me some momentum to get out of this rut that I find myself in now.
The kids in the cinema were laughing at the jokes and I think what Pixar is so good at is the ability to turn a complicated subject into something that kids can interpret. I still remember a girl burst into tears when Bing Bong in Inside Out evaporated into thin air. The mother had to take her away from her seat temporarily. It was a sad moment for both adults and kids.
Totally agree about adults not giving kids credit for understanding stuff - I was at the BFI for the first screening of Inside Out with a Q&A with some of the Pixar creative team for an audience that was mostly kids. It was amazing to hear how strongly the varying ages had absolutely no problem with understanding what was presented to them - there were even a couple of questions that had the Pixar team silent for a moment in awe of how well the kids thought about and interpreted what they'd just watched. And I absolutely loved Soul - was a gut-punch that took my breath away. Would be great if Disney allowed cinemas to show it once things can start to reopen as it really needs to be seen and heard on the big screen.
Excellent point re: Spirited Away (or any Ghibli movie tbh) My dad tried to watch Howls Moving Castle and just couldn't grasp it. My 3 year old, at the tine, was absolutely transfixed on everything. Totoro is another my kids just love, and will watch endlessly - soul is already doing that!
There's maybe too many ideas in here (which leads to a rather abrupt ending) and the worldbuilding isn't quite as strong as Inside Out, but I thought it was lovely all the same, great visuals and music, the emotional beats work well and the Knicks/Andrew Jackson gags are hilarious. I like to think of the film as a sequel to Hunt for the Wilderpeople where Rachel House's character has now become a bureaucrat in the world of souls.
Really enjoyed it. I thought it tied together the concepts with the story far better than Inside Out did (comparisons are inevitable when story structure is so damn similar - Wreck It Ralph too!). It's a shame it stuck so rigidly to the structure, some of the swings in characters were too whiplash-inducingly fast for me. It really wanted to get characters to a certain point, but shied away from earning it emotionally. But it's a kids film, and to do the characters justice would have likely been quite traumatising for younger audiences!
Agreed. Kids are not turned off by things that confuse them. If anything frightens kids away it's boredom or scary stuff, not complicated concepts when presented in fun cartoon forms.
I know it's a kids movie, but I felt it was wrong to sugarcoat it with a "happy ending" I found the original sacrifice ect to be beautiful and profound

I really respect this film, more than any other full length theatrical Pixar release but I really don’t think kids will understand it enough to enjoy it.It’s by far Pixar’s most ambitious film to date,I wish they had made it a 2 & a half hour long film,as I think it needed more time to fully flesh out the philosophy/ideas & the characters more. Inside Out got the balance of a film for kids & adults perfectly spot on & it’s currently my no1 Pixar film for that reason among plenty others. This was just a bit too ambitious but I fully respect that this was a non, long kids merchandising IP,which the Cars series of films ended up becoming after the 1st film, more than any others imo & I got lots of enjoyment & thought provoking moments from this film throughout but I am 40+ years old & that’s this films main marketing “problem” when it comes to trying to get kids to enjoy it.I don’t have kids,so I could be completely wrong.🤷♂️

Ironically the one thing I thought the film lacked was 'soul'. I enjoyed it, it had all the elements, but something was missing. I felt the main character wasn't particularly well fleshed out as, say Mr Fredrickson (UP) who had hefty flashbacks of his youth with Ellie and made us care about him. There was little of that here except rushed throwbacks to Joe and his father. I found myself not caring about the character. Mr Fredrickson was a d**k to Kevin, but we could forgive him because we knew more about him and the extenuating circumstances. When Joe is a d**k to number 22 he's, well, just unlikable. That said, I'm not the target audience. The animation is frankly unbelievable. A technical masterpiece. 6.5/10.
I was quite disappointed with this film. I feel like I should have loved it but I found it tonally inconsistent, not really knowing what it wanted to be. It goes without saying that it looks great, but for the most part it didn't work for me.
Just watched it...and yeah, that's some clever, sweet, ernest, moving and profound film-making. (But I reeeeeally want to know what happened to 22..I guess it doesn't matter but still, lil cut scene would have been yay)
Pretty good film, really enjoyed the storyline and the message about life being about more than just some passions or what we think is our purpose (also I found it hilarious that 22 ended up being born in Asia considering her voice actor Tina Fey is pretty racist towards Asians, kind of a take that jab at Fey).
It’s a lovely film but I agree with Simon - it’s a bit trippy at times and some of the “before” scenes put me in mind of extended cut scenes from Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey - a film that dealt with the afterlife in a not dissimilar way. I thought the story was a little light and whilst I enjoyed it it didn’t really grow on me in the same way that Inside Out did, and at times I was, frankly, bored. It was all a bit 2001 junior: A Pixar Odyssey.
Having said that the music in it (the score and the narrative) was great and the animation was spectacular. Some of the scenes at the end were almost photo realistic and I remember thinking “I could watch any film genre made in this style”.
While there are so many great moments and pieces of extraordinary craft in this film, it was downright weird to me how many times the characters use words of expressions that completely fly over kids' heads. Don't remember where, but there was even an article written about this, interviewing parents about how much of it they'd felt their kids had understood. To me, it felt weird and unnecessary, because it wasn't as if many of those lines were required in order to make a good joke (on the contrary, many of the jokes that felt the most forced were the result of this). That being said, my four year old was completely enthralled by Soul. But Disney could have done a lot better of a job meeting kids on their own level. One interesting thing was that my daughter didn't seem to care in the slightest that the protagonist wasn't a kid himself, which made me realize I'd always somehow assumed was a prerequisite, but now know isn't. I actually thought that was quite a brave choice by the studio.
Turned it off 30mins in as my 10 year old and 7 year old were bored. Never done that with any Pixar film before. It's a film made for critics not kids.
Mayo's only reservation was that he thinks it would be hard for certain people to understand? wtf thats not an opinion of any kind, no need to be worried about kids/adults understanding a concept, what matters more is what you thought of it
This movie is not for kids! You put this next to other Pixar movies like brave, toy story, monsters Inc etc & it just doesn't work with the same young child audience! Adults will definitely get more out of this than the kids but it's massively overrated! I thought it was average! Everything on earth works, whenever it goes to soul heaven, it's just weird!
What a bad movie. The main character basically commits suicide after getting the chance of he's life in the first 10 minutes. Seriously, who walks like that in the middle of a big city without the surviving instincts being turned on?
To me, the core message of the movie Soul was, "Life is not about having a larger than life purpose. It's about making sense of it."
My 4 year old just watched from start to finish. If she doesnt like a movie she lets us know. But she watched this till the end past her bedtime staying awake cause she was invested in it.

That still frame of the man walking across the sidewalk looks like the Beatles Abbey Road album cover.
Heyyyy my man
Ironically the one thing I thought the film lacked was 'soul'.
Trent Reznor and Atticus did an beautiful soundtrack💙
Superb film. I loved it and my Family and I are still talking about it.
Didn't give Jaimie Foxx enough credit
Incredible film
Really wonderful film.
I don’t think this is as brilliant as “Wall-e”, but I still love it.
Absolutely loved it
Mark's got The Dawn of the Dead box set.
I thought it was pretty good, although maybe a bit... on the rails. However that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Pretty good film, really enjoyed the storyline and the message about life being about more than just some passions or what we think is our purpose (also I found it hilarious that 22 ended up being born in Asia considering her voice actor Tina Fey is pretty racist towards Asians, kind of a take that jab at Fey).
Well said about children’s cerebral capabilities
5:43 "But, actually, experience has _proven_ to me..."
Experience has what now?
I like how this film doesnt talk down to kids
Best way
It’s a lovely film but I agree with Simon - it’s a bit trippy at times and some of the “before” scenes put me in mind of extended cut scenes from Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey - a film that dealt with the afterlife in a not dissimilar way.
Coco is way better but I can see why people like this.
I’m 39 and I watched it with my 4 year old daughter, she sits through many similar films but she just wasn’t interested in this and neither was I.
I think this film needs to have a rating of 30+, kids won't understand it at best and be traumatized at worst
Who liked the Sam Smith cameo in the subway ❤️❤️❤️
Turned it off 30mins in as my 10 year old and 7 year old were bored. Never done that with any Pixar film before. It's a film made for critics not kids.
Onward was way better
I liked it but didn’t love it.
Sorry but this review is a bit disappointing
I found it very boring!
@Akshay 786 I'm not a kid.
Is wearing duct tape on one's hair the latest british fashion?
It’s a cracker party hat
