So interesting! I am gardening in a different zone this year, a much harsher climate, so I have decided not to dead head roses so as to build up immunity to drying heat and cold.
I have a ‘generous gardener’ that I planted in a pot in March. I am debating whether to continue in pot or put in the ground. But looks like they can grow big based on your own GG. Thank you for featuring them
This video could not have come at a better time! I am waiting for my 2 Generous Gardener roses to arrive for my rose arbor. I am new to roses & am trying to learn all I can & appreciate your excellent wisdom & experience! Thank you sooo much!🌹🌹🌹
Thank you for this instructive video. I think my GG rose is getting a little too much shade. It’s a first year and not blooming a lot, even though I’m feeding and dead heading. I love your garden. Thank you
You are so welcome, Lulu. Climbers don't impress us much during their infancy years. I have some young plants and am happy with one bloom from them this year. Your situation can be typical , unless shade is present.
Interesting please show us the hips from the GG in fall, would like to see them as I have 4 GG. I like to leave one plant by not deadhead it. Thank you your garden is beautiful.😍
I planted my generous Gardner rose about 5 years ago and interestingly, while it blooms beautifully, it hasn't grown tall. Admittedly, until last year, it was kind of neglected til I landscaped the area it's in. So it wasnt dead-headed or fertilized regularly. Very bushy - almost as if it was growing outward, instead of upward. Any idea why? Will be much more on top of regular care this year!
Hm, there can be several reasons here: 1. In cold zones climbers will loose more stems to wind and cold weather. 2. The way you prune. You shorten long main stems on the climber, which should be left alone. By doing it, all the lateral buds are stimulated and bushy growth is created.
You're going to have some beautiful hips to clip off and bring in the house. They would look great in a wreath with other dried flowers. My Generous Gardener is just 3 years old and I have to move it this fall. I hope it will be okay and start thriving next year. It doesn't like it's spot as the tree nearby has grown too much shade over it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be alright. Do you think I should prune it way down when I transplant it or leave the canes long?
Great idea about hips! As for those long canes. I would prune them for winter. Your GG will push new canes next spring, you won't have flowers, but will have your rose thriving. I am preparing a spot for your beautiful rose!
Olga I too have the generous gardener and as it was its second year in my garden in the UK last year. I didn't prune it as I didn't know what I was doing. It didn't bloom Very well at all last summer. I have more knowledge this year and I'm Looking forward to pruning it, I've removed all leaves so as I can see what I'm doing as this rose drops more petals than leaves ( it hardly drops its leaves in winter. It's very sheltered on a wall.. May I ask if you remove all your leaves before pruning your roses.? I'm sure it would take you a very long time x
Hi Davena, I don't remove all the leaves for winter. Whatever falls, I just rake from under the arch. When spring comes and spring major pruning comes, I trim all the branches with leaves and quickly clean it up. By that time there is not much left on that climber. Happy gardening and enjoy your GG this season!
@@OlgaCarmody Thank you for responding. I inherited a home with little to no garden and your channel has inspired me so much. So, currently I am debating on roses. 🤗

Hi! You can prune the rose now and it will have enough time to bloom again before winter, I think so...
I think I will go for beautiful hips in the fall. Thank you for your suggestion!

If you don't mind can you please tell me your property size and garden size? 🙂
I garden on around one sixth of an acre.
@@OlgaCarmody thank you 😊
What are the ages of both Generous Gardeners? Are they fast growing roses?
They are around 10 years old. I can't say that they are fast growing.

How old are your roses? Trying to gauge its speed.
