- Road bowling veterans Mick Barry and Liam O’Keeffe go head to head in the village of Monkstown, County Cork.
Mick Barry and Liam O’Keeffe between them, have been road bowling for over five decades. Popular in Cork, the sport is played with a 16oz cast iron bowl which fits into palm of the hand. Two contestants throw the bowl along an agreed distance of road and the winner is the player to reach the finishing line using the least number of throws.
Septuagenarian Mick Barry from Waterfall in County Cork is much admired for his road bowling skills. He is in record books for lofting a bowl over the viaduct on the Cork-Bandon railway line in the 1960s. However, he is not complacent about his challenge against Liam O’Keeffe.
One never knows in bowling, it can go anyway like, you make the best efforts in the world and things might go against you, you hope for the best.
Liam O’Keefe’s preparations for the game have included an early night and abstaining from alcohol. Overseeing the contest is Bishop John Buckley who is friends with both men. Remaining impartial, he anticipates a marvellous display,
Road bowling is something that is bred in our bones here, entwined in our lives, especially in the people of the area.
Once each man chooses a bowl that feels right, it is time to take to the road and a crowd of spectators have gathered for the event. Noel Magnier cannot tell who will win the contest as both men are playing well on an uphill road. This is difficult terrain for young men let alone men in their sixties and seventies.
Wendy Forde enjoys watching road bowling as it involves walking, fresh air and meeting people.
It’s really enjoyable, it doesn’t cost you anything, it’s cheap entertainment.
Mick threw the winning bowl at the finishing line although he found the match very tough.
I made a lot of mistakes, but eventually I made up for it in the end, with the help of Liam throwing a few bad ones.

Well I can't say I know much more about the sport now than I did four minutes ago haha ... but it seems like a good wholesome community-supported activity and that's good to see.

@Jesse H it's whoever takes the fewest throws to get from start to finish line. Bowl is out when it goes into the ditch. (That's as much as I know -- there may be more rules.)
Not completely wholesome as it's a game with great potential for on the spot betting.

They used to play outside my Grandparents house near Ballinspittle years ago, my Uncle played💕💕
A group of men still play this on drogheda / baltry road on some sundays. My dad in the 70’s / early 80’s played this in Dublin but they played it in an industrial estate on Sundays.
Lots of people out and enjoying been together.

We went to visit my ex-wife's uncle in Clonakilty a few years ago and he took me to the bowling. There's some serious money is bet on these matches.

I'm French Canadian and I find this channel very entertaining.
Actjally strictly speaking it is not an Irish game, it's Dutch. It is still played in Holland. It was introduced to Ireland by the Williamite army in the 17th century and is very popular in my county, Armagh. We call it bullets as the original "bowls" were small bore cannon balls.

When I first moved down to West Cork from Dublin I found this game strange and annoying because they block the road. Lol

Maybe further into the 21st Century this Sport will become more popular again. Throughout history Sports have being revived (Gaelic Football and Hurling were at the very late 19th Century). Also Interesting video.
With modern traffic it's becoming harder and harder to really play this game

Makes sense. 28 is almost 800 grammes. 16 would be too light. I play boules (the French "Petanque"). The boules are between 650 and 800 grammes. Have you played this yourself? (bowling)
And they're cast iron? That would leave a mark on one of those spectators.
@@sdrtcacgnrjrc yes I do I’m from the south of Ireland where it’s quite popular in certain areas however it’s still misunderstood by many and sadly not advertised enough by the leading organisation - in my opinion there’s not enough new players coming in
I grew up in that part of Ireland near the viaduct the 16oz was for us kids the 28 was for the men and there was also a 32oz but not many could throw that, it was also said the game came about from the Irish throwing cannon balls back at the brits we didn’t have any cannon.
A mighty bit of craic in its day ,I've only had the pleasure to see it been played once and it'll always stay with me how we used to be in this country before idiots took it over .
The new Irish from Islamabad and Lagos will undoubtedly carry on these ancient traditions once they are a majority of the population.

I was in Dublin airport two years ago and saw very few non white people. The main airport in Ireland. Compare that with Birmingham airport where I traveled from. There were people from all over the world there. And that is not the UK'S main airport.
