Plz compare MacBook Pro 2018 15 inch I7 Vs i9 Plz compare them with similar specs And is the i7 having a problem the one i9 is having. Is xps 15 with i9 a alternative to it
I take it the situation is the same for a 2019 15 inch Macbook. I just bought one with 16gb ram and 1 tb SSD. I take it that you can't replace either the RAM or SSD. I just hope 16gb will be enough to last several years at least. I think it is kind of ridiculous that you can't replace either the RAM or SSD. I'd rather have a slightly thicker/heavier computer that lets you upgrade the RAM or SSD than a thin computer that doesn't let you upgrade at all.
I remember a time before 2013 when it was easy to upgrade your standardized components on a Mac. need more RAM? done. need more HDD space? done. deciding on an SSD or traditional mechanical disk? done. want to upgrade your Mac Pro's graphics card or CPU? done. Now? forget it, using proprietary parts because they believe its better technology but in reality its meant to keep the users from upgrading their components plus seal it off with either glue or uncommon pentalobe screws! good luck at getting any warranty support from Apple for any current Macs' design flaws. I previously had owned two MacBook Pros, one Mac Mini, and several generations of iPads, including an iPad Pro, and since then recently switched to Windows because of apples shady business practices and design decisions with their entire product line. I think apple has lost its vision and focus on why they make great products and are now more focused on profits.
Geeker1982 agree I owned the MacBook Pro 2011 and changed the RAM and the HDD for SSD, I replaced the CD port with more space. I was very happy with what I could do with the machine
You are completely right, but sadly Apple isn’t the only company that uses proprietary parts. More and more manufactures switch, because it’s easier in the production.
Geeker1982. U do realize ALL tech manufacturers quickly copy and paste each others’ money making design choices. Your dissatisfaction with the current planned obsolescence business model need not be restricted to only Apple. This is the wave of the present and very soon future for all profiteers!
My 2017 MacBook Pro 15 inch keyboard replaced due to unresponsive keys, they replaced the top shell , The keyboard, and the battery, makes sense now that you say they’re all glued together.
A repairability score of 1/10. Thanks again iFixit for reminding me about my thought about how Apple basically sells consumer-grade computers at business-grade prices.
I bought a 2010 MB pro in 2010 and lasted me 8 years without a single problem. Didn't have to repair absolutely nothing. An when I say that it lasted me its because I bought an 2018 MB pro recently and thus I don't use it anymore. But its still working!! Apple make things to last. I also only cracked my iPhone screen 2 times but that was when I had my iPhone 3GS and my iPhone 5C. Nothing happened to my iPhone 4, 6S or 8.
Why only 1? Pretty much everything is repairable, except the soldered ram, cpu, gpu and storage.. and the battery which has to be replaced together with the top case. I'm not saying it's great to repair, but it's still not as bad if you have easy acess to ports, trackpad, motherboard, display etc.. I'd give it a 3.
Having RAM and internal storage soldered on the motherboard is the dumbest idea. Yet Apple insists on doing this so that if it does break, you'll either have to bring it to Apple to fix it or buy a new laptop.
its a smart decision for apple, but they should be shamed for being sooooo anti consumer. that's the reason i bought a dell xps 15, but that turned out to be another steaming pile of shit and no longer gonna buy another dell. Maybe used.
question: what was the thermal paste like on the heat sink good quality ? Have you tried any changes to that to see if thermal throttling issues are reduced ?
Good thing that iMacs and Mac Pros are fully modular and thanks to Mac Pro 2019 everything is completely Modular from the CPU Storage Ram and Even the Graphics cards whereas the 2013 Mac Pro uses Proprietary Graphics cards So maybe theres still good side of Apple after all
I hope Apple will add a SSD slot in the Touch Bar versions of MacBook Pro as in the non Touch Bar version of 13” MacBook Pro. Who want to throw their $3200 4TB SSD upgrade away if some part of the logic board fail after warranty period is over? And who want to throw their logic board away if the flash memory in the SSD get corrupt in a few years? Flash memory wont last forever. One thought I have is: Maybe Apple wanted to have a SSD slot in all models but lack of space in the Touch Bar versions made it impossible at introduction? And maybe they will find a solution for this by future optimizations? What else would be the reason only to have it in the non Touch Bar version of MacBook Pro?
The 2018 MBP is not recommended to go with i9 because thermal throttle But its unclear how a darn similarly looking and darn similarly thickness 2019 MBP can cool down i9 even the 8 core version and able to turbo boost Its just miracle
should allow modular so that tech savvy people like us can use the product we've invested for a long term. until today i'm still using my MBP2012 model upgraded to 2tb SSD and 16Gb RAM p/s: those that want a thinner design should just stick to the Air, Pro are for pro users imho
you gotta give Apple appreciation, no one is doing a better job manifacturing such compact laptops. the sothering will not be an issue when they will be able to schrink the components to the size of SD Cards with the possibility of popping them out and gettin them in with ease.
I have one. Not like I want to stir up controversy, but I love it. The 4 tbs of storage and a super nice i9 processor (yes I was a big enough of a dummy to get the maxed out version), but the keyboard is not the best, and close to the worst
My Logic Board broke on my 2013 MBPr 15" in Jan. $950 to fix a 5 yr old computer...oh well got 5 years, actually 12 months of continuos use when you count the hours...still pissed at Apple for not making it easier to fix
try to buy that logic board on ebay and change it yourself. I think it will be 5x cheaper or even more. Look at Ifixit site. There are photos and instruction in detail how to do this job for any model. Good luck. (I repaired 2 my macbooks, and it was fun too!)
Nowadays all computer vendors are following this methods of soldering all on mbs. This means use and throw. They dont want customers to get their machines repaired at anycost. They want to keep selling newer laptops every year. Thats destructive type of designing. One way its good that machines pegormance will remain solid at any rough uses reducing its failure rates, but once it fails its more expensove to repair than buying a new one. But this is not acceptable when you are paying huge amount of money of these machines. People should stop buying these machines and oppose these moves... its becoming more and more difficult to get these things repaired...
Its to do with the bill that past recently its called sometime like( repair you own devices) because of when you purchase an electronic goods as soon asyou pay for an item it's yours. as in your property so you can do whet ever repair you want excluding the warranty.
Would you buy a car (which is more or less the purchase price) that would not allow you to change anything if it broke ... I don't think so! IT'S MAGIC!
As someone who is tied to apples accessibility options and their software, it is truly sad to see a pro product be offered with minimal specs. Instead of re-configuring the base models they expect individuals to pay double the price for components on top of an apple tax when upgrading simple things like storage. I understand they are a business and what they are working towards in strengthening their product security and revenue stream. The way they are working towards this goal is negatively impacting pro users satisfaction over the long term. From the teardown I would give it a zero, because there is nothing in the computer that I would go out and buy to upgrade or replace if the computer breaks.
I would like to correct "The top case assembly, which includes the keyboard, battery, and speakers, is firmly glues in place". I suggest everyone here who own a macbook pro 2016 to 2018 shake your macbook horizontally, vertically, open up the lid and shake it all direction again, 7 out of 10 your macbook makes sound of something loose inside it. Yes, It is battery.
What is up with these non-modular design choices? It’s disheartening to see how far Apple is moving away from modular RAM and hard disks to soldered in components ... How naïve can I be?
Sander Evers take a look at the Dell XPS 15. Thin & gorgeous and completely upgradable. Or the Lenovo IdeaPad 720s. Or a ton of other thin & light laptops. There is barely an excuse for this shit
Modular means having to make everything bigger. The smaller and more lightweight you make something the less modular it can be. Someone made a modular cell phone. It was gigantic and it flopped. If you want modular, there are 100s of options out there you can buy. But there aren't many options for very small and lightweight while being high end.
Why mention that the processor is soldered on the mother board? Do you know any marginally portable laptop that doesn't have a soldered processor? The ram and storage should not be soldered in a Pro device especially one that costs that much. There are a ton of other laptops that offer better specs and that are also upgradable (at least the ram, storage and WiFi card). Build quality is second to none as always on MacBooks but tbh it's not worth it because everything else is a bit of a disappointment...
replacing the logic board in Canada is 900$ ... imagine us repair guys explaining to clients that because their SSD or RAM is failing they'll need an entire new logic board.. 😑 ridiculous
Not just hard to repair - this laptop is also a PITA to diagnose in the first place. You have no green light on charger to check power circuitry, you have no ASD/AST anymore, since that's on Apple Servers now, known as AST2 (that are not accessible if you didn't know), you have no fan spin to check whether 5V rail/board is dead and now, because the 2016/17 models were not bad enough, they gave us the precious T2 chip, that will not just bind the fingerprint reader, but now also the SSD to the board! So if you somehow manage to be retarded enough to spec the SSD to 4TB, you can kiss your data goodbye, once your board dies. You have either to repair the board to get it to work, or you can throw it away. This is also the case for the new iMac Pro. Just that they have 2 SSDs. I also don't want to imagine, if any liquid gets to the T2 chip. If that single chip dies, your mainboard turns into a 2000$ paperweight. So everyone being so excited about the "biggest leap in speed", bear in mind, this machine might drive you insane. P.S. Have I already mentioned that netboot is gone for those machines? No? Yeah. So if your SSD is dead, you also have a 3k$ paperweight. Enjoy it.
Apple may as well just forget about making computers and gadgets and move to the fashion industry. I won't argue that they often create very good-looking products, but that's about it. They just focus on aesthetics and don't give a sh!t about function and practicality.
The RAM/CPU should last the life of the machine, but the SSD? Come on Apple! it has a finite lifespan. Why this can't go on a simple Micro PCI card is beyond me. It does NOT require more space, it can be screwed down fast. There is no advantage to soldering it in place other than to compel users to purchase more expensive machines out of the gate and reduce cost (without passing those savings along to the consumer).
Apple will always recycle your old Mac free of charge. It's a very environmentally responsible service that they offer. I own the 2018 MBP 15'' Hex-core 2.6Ghz version, it's blazing fast. It's worth every penny. The 2017 MBP 15'' quad-core 2.9Ghz version is also very good, which I also own. If you are on a MBP before but not including 2013, this is a very good upgrade, and it's about time. Otherwise, wait for the next one.
This is wrong. Yes, they will "recycle" your old Mac free of charge, but so will a trashcan. Apple orders their devices to be SHREDDED by the recyclers, all they reuse is a little bit of metal. Everything else still goes in a landfill. This is so that people couldn't get parts for Apple devices. If you resell your device to a company that buys second-hand devices for resale and recycling, it will actually be either fixed or the parts will be used to fix other similar devices, reusing things like: The display assembly, the trackpad, the top case assembly, the logic board. And unless it's a shady company, your data will be wiped safely, of course. You will also get PAID for your laptop, rather than "having it recycled for free". A 2017-2018 Macbook Pro with liquid damage that doesn't turn on, is still easily worth 100-200 EUR/USD/GBP if not more
I literarily never heard of bad ram. Or broken ssd's. Or literarily anything on that motherboard, if it's not like stone-aged old. This computer is not made to last 20 years, but it will easily work for 8+ years of you handle it with care and replace the battery after some years. So what's the deal?
To be fair here, most people don't open up their computers, ever. The fact that things are hard to replace will only make it worse for apple themselves when they get any faulty computers in for repair. For us who actually do upgrade storage and ram and such, there's the current and upcoming Mac Pro. I would however love to see it in a portable device as it was previously, and I actually think it's coming back. It's all about time.
"Uh, uh, I broke the power button... Time to pay Apple $2000 for repair. It's just a small price to pay to stay in Apple's great ecosystem."
Plz compare MacBook Pro 2018 15 inch
I7 Vs i9
Plz compare them with similar specs
And is the i7 having a problem the one i9 is having.
Is xps 15 with i9 a alternative to it
Are they still using cheap thermal glue between the processor and cooling system?
i have a 2018 macbook pro 15. my keyboard is broken. what has apple to change? Battery, too?
I take it the situation is the same for a 2019 15 inch Macbook. I just bought one with 16gb ram and 1 tb SSD. I take it that you can't replace either the RAM or SSD. I still have my 2012 MacBook pro, upgraded the HDD when it broke down. It was great
My 2017 MacBook Pro 15 inch keyboard replaced due to unresponsive keys, they replaced the top shell , The keyboard, and the battery, makes sense now that you say they’re all glued together.
I just came to take a look at the cooling solution.
Why didn't they put air intakes in the bottom part? Functionality
freaking apple pairing everything
A repairability score of 1/10.
Thanks again iFixit for reminding me about my thought about how Apple basically sells consumer-grade computers at business-grade prices.

Inside the Macbook pro 2018 (16gb Ram) Model, are there two 8gb Rams or just one 16gb?
Does the top part contains the Flash storage? And when they replace it: How likely is it that they put the old storage on the new top case?
Dear iFixit, please tear down & compare i9 version with i7 version.
?
Do you have white noise issue with internal speakers when volume is low? I think it is all MacBook Pro 15 2018 ?
?
Having RAM and internal storage soldered on the motherboard is the dumbest idea. Yet Apple insists on doing this so that if it does break, you'll either have to bring it to Apple to fix it or buy a new laptop.

the copper pipe and fan are really damn small and thin... there is no way the MBP 18 is able to properly keep the CPU/GPU at decent temperatures
Awesome been waiting for this and I see the ssd is still solder on
Does it mean that if logic board is damaged then ppl may lose all the data in ssd?
Apple-> 😈
Yikkai Ng yeah, u can’t tear the ssd from the logic board so
Question. Is there a way to make the Black Apple Logo Shine?? Glowing Logo??
This machine throttles like crazy.
question: what was the thermal paste like on the heat sink good quality ? Have you tried any changes to that to see if thermal throttling issues are reduced ?
Is flexgate fixed on this particular device? Or it was fixed later?
Can we repaste the new macbook pros?
Good thing that iMacs and Mac Pros are fully modular and thanks to Mac Pro 2019 everything is completely Modular from the CPU Storage Ram and Even the Graphics cards whereas the 2013 Mac Pro uses Proprietary Graphics cards
So maybe theres still good side of Apple after all
Where is the teardown video they are talking about!?
still waiting for the ACTUAL teardown video.
iFixit can you confirm the issues that this new 6core macbook is having with overheating and thermal throttling? would also make a nice video :)
I hope Apple will add a SSD slot in the Touch Bar versions of MacBook Pro as in the non Touch Bar version of 13” MacBook Pro. The 2018 MBP is not recommended to go with i9 because thermal throttle
But its unclear how a darn similarly looking and darn similarly thickness 2019 MBP can cool down i9 even the 8 core version and able to turbo boost
Its just miracle
Anyone know if A macbook pro 2017 display assembly Is compatible with this for replacement I have A lot of 2017 Displays
Nice....
so....how about the thermal control??
신영 it's bad, just plain bad. Not even apple fans can argue with that.
Watch new video from Dave2D. He explains the thermal control in the i9 variant
신영 throttles to the bone
Young Shin
This is cinebench test of my macbook pro 2018 13”: m.ua-cam.com/video/IJzL-bX7LPQ/v-deo.html
How do you remove the heatsync? Is there another video?
Hey iFixit can you guys make a video of blackmagic egpu??
Where is gpu
Why do they never do it step by step anymore?
should allow modular so that tech savvy people like us can use the product we've invested for a long term. until today i'm still using my MBP2012 model upgraded to 2tb SSD and 16Gb RAM
p/s: those that want a thinner design should just stick to the Air, Pro are for pro users imho
Same super high repairibility score
0:12 why is there so much space wasted at the bottom of the batteries?
where are the magnets for the closing lid located?
And the graphics processor is where????
Howwouldyouliketoreaditaltogether? Everythingisgluedtosavespace. Veryconvenient. ThisishowAppleisnowadays. Readitmyways. HAHAHAHA.....
please where i
can get 1 TB hard disk i don`t know what i look
How about the eGPU ?
can you replace the 2017 mbp logic board to a 2018?
Why weren't on the ltx 2018????
you gotta give Apple appreciation, no one is doing a better job manifacturing such compact laptops. the sothering will not be an issue when they will be able to schrink the components to the size of SD Cards with the possibility of popping them out and gettin them in with ease.
I'm waiting for this video... Thank you very much!! ❤️😍😍
"Definitely the worst apple in the field" - Applejack.
well, there is a big difference between USB-C and Thunderbolt 3
Why is the video so short?
Watt Hour = energy
Very good video 👌
That there 2018 MacBook Pro is a Gosh darn “IPAD IN LAPTOP CLOTHING”!
I miss the good old MacBook Pro especially the 🍎glow logo.
soldered SSD? really? so it's not replaceable?
Matebook X pro??
As much as I like macOS, being able to upgrade hard drives and ram is more important, gonna make the next upgrade a windows machine
And Rossman will need to fix them.
If the tech like this could come 10x cheaper then everyone can afford these.
it would have been 10x cheaper if you could upgrade parts as you wish.
it's funny by how I'm not surprised by the score. lol
I wish these videos went more in depth.
Mainly a battery.
Nice vid
Ssd have a high chance of failure so when it does there is no replacing it and you can never buy more storage
So if the ssd fails you have to buy an entire new logic board?
That sucks
I have one. Not like I want to stir up controversy, but I love it. The 4 tbs of storage and a super nice i9 processor (yes I was a big enough of a dummy to get the maxed out version), but the keyboard is not the best, and close to the worst
Magic glue.
I think apple did a good job removing floppy disk, cd drive, usb a, hdmi, Ethernet for a sexy brand new USB C port.
Could you please tell where they put true tone sensors?
Just right next to the camera
My Logic Board broke on my 2013 MBPr 15" in Jan. $950 to fix a 5 yr old computer...oh well got 5 years, actually 12 months of continuos use when you count the hours...still pissed at Apple for not making it easier to fix

Inside of apple products reminds me of the Empire in star wars
Apple has become a phone company to a level that their laptops are like phones now.
Would you buy a car (which is more or less the purchase price) that would not allow you to change anything if it broke ... I don't think so! IT'S MAGIC!
I JUST NOTICED MY DOGS NAME IS PEBBLES ALSO!!
Please do Blackmagic Egpu ! :)
It seems Apple has a very high confidence on their CPU, FLASH, DRAM, and all the chips because they glue them all together.
As someone who is tied to apples accessibility options and their software, it is truly sad to see a pro product be offered with minimal specs. This what you get for making it as thin as possible.
Sander Evers and yet there are others making it thin and light and repairable at the same time.
Sander Evers take a look at the Dell XPS 15. Thin & gorgeous and completely upgradable. Or the Lenovo IdeaPad 720s. Or a ton of other thin & light laptops. There is barely an excuse for this shit

MacBook "Pro"
Oh no! Non-upgradeable RAM? *sigh* I'll have to look somewhere else.
Its a i7 if you have this laptop long enough to need a newer gen cpu its time for a whole new laptop
Where ist the gpu
It's the dawn of disposable laptops.
I have never once looked at a laptop and was like "damn I wanna upgrade that"
replacing the logic board in Canada is 900$ ... imagine us repair guys explaining to clients that because their SSD or RAM is failing they'll need an entire new logic board.. 😑 ridiculous

Thumbs Up Apple, very ecological super expensive laptop without replace anything. After few years go to trash becouse bad ram for example. 😞
32gb of ram?????

Who is to blame if you decide to buy a machine that won't allow to replace a broken ssd or ram once the warranty is gone? Don't do it.
Who is from vue-infinite-loading ?
To be fair here, most people don't open up their computers, ever. The fact that things are hard to replace will only make it worse for apple themselves when they get any faulty computers in for repair. For us who actually do upgrade storage and ram and such, there's the current and upcoming Mac Pro. I would however love to see it in a portable device as it was previously, and I actually think it's coming back. It's all about time.
Get rid of the touchbar and bring back magsafe and glowing apple logo and boot up video
