Home looks TERRIBLE for neighbors after 3 YEARS of overgrowth

  • I came across this house while driving through the neighborhood and saw how overgrown it was getting. I was going to knock on the door, but all the windows were boarded up and there was a note deeming it vacant by the city. So, I spoke with the next door neighbor and she told me it's been abandoned for 3 years now. It gets crazy tall every year and the city might come out and cut it once a year. So, I thought I would completely transform it to make it look better for the neighborhood!

Agree, I’ve said this on a few of these lawncarers videos; why so many abandoned houses in USA? Surely with so many homeless and also people begging to find a rental pay, these could supply a step up. Thank you Spencer on behalf of absent owner, relieved neighbour’s and the general neighbourhood. Really excellent work, you do it with pride, no half measures. Blessings from 🇦🇺

@@ollie9619, @wrarsha, the issue is with many of these abandoned homes there are severe mold, asbestos, plumbing, and water leak issues. The value of the home/land is less than the cost to repair. If the city were to take possession to sell, they would have to sell for value of the land only. And, either the city or the new owner would have to come up with demolition costs before any new build could take place.

There's no way I could live next to that without at least running my lawnmower over it to at least keep snakes, rodents and critters out. And report to city code enforcement it had been broken into.

That's what I don't understand about the neighborhoods with these houses. We have a small meadow type area that leads down to a little creek on our street and the whole street gets together and takes care of it periodically. One of our neighbors has a strong rider and knocks down most of it, though. I wouldn't feel comfortable if I knew that yard was there like that on my street. But big props to Spencer for doing all that work. He gets a "like" from me every week. And I subscribed months and months ago.

I also wonder how long until the look of the place slowly returned to the horror that it was first seen here. The neighbors now need to take a hand into keeping the work up. It is their neighborhood, their property values, their danger. Once they know they aren’t going to be sued for mowing the lawn or cutting back the undergrowth, etc. it is just a couple of hours or less during a month to keep things looking decent. Right now dry grass and weeds around a deserted house are a fire hazard. A fire may take out the tacky house, but it may damage several others as well.

In addition to improving both drainage and appearance for the affected neighbors, this job also improved safety for them by uncovering and making the fire hydrant much more visible and identifiable, as well as improved firefighters' access to it in the event of an emergency. It does sort of seem like, in the case of an apparently abandoned house like this, that the local city or whatever authority would at least keep the public sidewalk along the street, the fire hydrant at the corner, etc. clear. The "right-of-way" area anyway.

My mower broke down last summer, I'm on a fixed income, I have some of the laziest grandkids on earth so my yard is about 4 feet tall. I used to have a beautiful yard & I miss it. I can't even pay someone to do it, they see the back & want a kidney for the half effort they'd put in it so I'm stuck with my home in the middle of a jungle. I love watching the transformation. I have done this with my neighbor's yard. She worked long, hard hours. I teach, so I have the summers off. I would "find" her patio, trim, and mow for her about once a year. She would keep up with it once I got it up to par. That's what friends are for. In the winter, my husband cleared her driveway with the snowblower. He did ours and then moved down the street. He usually did 5 houses. No one could afford it done professionally, so he just cleared their driveways, sidewalks, and steps. It was satisfying. Now, my son clears my friend's driveway as we have moved to a warmer climate.

Hello there. I just discovered lawn reclamation videos about 3 days ago. I won't leave a long speech I just wanted to let you know that so far you are my favorite as you are the most entertaining and informative channel I have found so far😊 I especially like the way you do a section involving all the steps so we can see development as the video progresses. Love you work and look forward to viewing all of them.

You are setting a good example for others. Most people neglect to clean the edges of walkways, driveways and especially the curbs and street. Good job. .

Spencer what you do is such caring act of community awareness. You do provide a real community service in helping to restore order, and public safety when you so generously reach out to work your magic. The fact that you not only cleanup the properties for folks who can’t afford or physically maintain their property but also the abandoned ones as well speaks volumes. God bless you as you continue your mission of community service. I almost was so awed by the awesome of this makeover to tell you what a great job you did here, of course you never fail to amazed by your efforts.

Magnificent job as always, Spencer! The various communities of Kansas are lucky to have someone so diligently good at their job like you.
It is always a little bit of a bummer to see houses like this with great potential that are just abandoned and doing nothing. Especially when the country is having surges of homelessness or unavailabilty of homes.
I think that with your UA-cam channel, you are actually helping out with the awareness of this problem just by doing the work that you do and showing the different kinds of abandoned homes that are in the communities of Kansas.
Anyways, keep up the good work, sir! 😎👍🏼

We see 40 minutes of what took hours to do. I’m surprised at negative comments. An eyesore is removed, sidewalks are cleared and gutters as well. And while each of us might pick up all trimmings, Spencer is doing a free service on an abandoned property. In perspective, it’s a huge job. Well done!
