- I drove the M4 last year and really didn't like it. I thought it couldn't handle the power, was too big and just not fun. Now there's a Competition Pack from BMW which claims to make the car easier to exploit - but is it any better?

Turn off sport mode and it wont burbble dummy. in efficient mode its very docile- the ride is the harshest part if you turn everything to comfort. Which you should because you arent track testing it.

Literally the only reviewer I have ever heard with so many complaints. Comparing to a Lotus? Really? Not even the same category of machine. Every review talks about the power but matey here says it’s slow. Not a review, just an exercise in being contrary
The Lotus comparison was because I own one so I used it as my reference point, they're similar money too. People compare the M and 911s all the time.
And it's a quick car but not as quick as the numbers imply to me.

It's probably because most of the people you're watching are BMW shills or wannabe shills hoping if they wax lyrical about a certain brand long enough that'll get some kick back. Look at Joe Achilles - not hating on the guy and I don't mind most of his stuff - but man that dude never says a bad word about anything BMW. At least JayEmm is providing his honest opinions. It makes no sense that everyone universally likes car model XYZ. Like me for example, I can't imagine ever owning a Lotus. I don't know why. I'm sure if I drove one I'd love it, but I just don't have that burning desire to own one. I watch this channel for an opinion not an echo chamber.
Actually, to add to that, it's the same with the new M440i. I can't wait until JayEmm gets his hands on one of these and reviews it honestly, because at the moment people like Joe and Matt Watson are foaming at the mouth about how good it is. Really? Not one bad word? Come on guys.

On balance the M4 cp is a truly fantastic car, I have a 2017cp lci model. Of course it isn't going to sound like a high reving v8 but believe me in sport+ it sounds pretty damn cool. It's forced induction so you'll never have the induction noise but on a manual gearbox car the driver can manipulate the car into making all sorts of great noises similar to an old school turbo motor. The effortless wave of torque is incredible, these cars are really very quick. I have a Z4M, it's a great car, solid, direct, predictable and fast but the m4 cp is just in a different league. Fuel consumption is better than the thirsty V8 and the insurance is cheaper for me than an M2. Build quality is fabulous and the interior feels much more expensive than the M2, the cp seats are beautiful and very supportive, carbon trim confirms that your sitting in something very special. There are some concerns regarding traction, my approach to this is I'd be disapointed with close to 500hp (these cars dyno at over 444) if the rear end didn't feel alive, don't buy a big hp front engined rwd car if you want 4wd levels of point and shoot! I'ts more fun and that's what we buy these cars for!! A near 4.0's time for the 0-60mph sprint confirms there's good levels of traction but don't expect RS5 levels of initial grip, 4wd coupled with an auto box requires very little driver interaction... my young daughter could do a sub 4.0's time with no skill required! Driver skill = reward. Try a manual, you'll absolutely love it.
I quite like the sound! Not the crackles so much but the actual engine and exhaust sound.. but that might be because I was expecting it to be terrible after all the reviews.

I have had a BMW M4 competition package a few months and I love it. The Jaguar XFR I had previously was a big car !! The goddam sound of the thing is just fantastic, and the kick up the arse when you change gear in Sport + just brings a smile to your face ... !!
+Nick Lawrence Curiously that kick was one thing I didn't like when I first test drove one. Car broke traction in a straight line, ridiculous. I had TC engaged but would have been dangerous had I not
I hear you .. that was my reaction .. that tends to happen on bumpy roads but the traction control sorts it out
Buy a manual cp lci, they're fantastic, smooth slick changes with no artificial 'kick'. More fun too.

Very surprising negative review from a supposedly bmw fan! Lol. I too am a huge bmw fan and drive an M4 competition and absolutely love it. Even the exhaust note. On cold valve open starts its so loud my neighbours always comment lol. I've seen many reviews on the M4 on utube and many call this M4 competition almost carfection! I couldn't agree more. Its amazing. I'm actually very surprised by this negative review.... "A bus?!?"
Lots of people voted for Trump, it does not make them right. I am a BMW fan, I've driven a lot of them - this one was awful.

Yes c63s at almost 200kg more than M4 I can agree is a rhibo... Yet around a track M4 outperforms the likes of Merc/Audi so hardly a bus! Just saying, first time I've ever heard an M4 compared to a bus 🤣
@@suhailjamil3909 Weight is only a small part of it - size is the bigger issue, and the design of the cabin making the car incredibly difficult to place on a tight road.

Is it me or is there lots of hate in the comments.Why because someone disagrees with your opinion.?.It would seem most of those rudely objecting are doing so because they own this very car.What is the obsession with more power and more speed equalling better/more fun.It doesnt really and who cares how fast a car is around the bloody Ring its just not relevant in the real world where 99% of us live and drive regularly.All cars are now becoming bigger more expensive more complicated and for the most part too heavy.They are also less reliable and prohibitively expensive when they go wrong.
The most fun per mile i have had in a car has been in a diesel transit van!!!!!.

Wonder if you can get a drive of M3 csl with manual box looks and sounds awesome.
HK Sound system is very good indeed, but needs to be correctly set up. Arguably one of the best systems for the money as an optional extra. I've had my M4cp from new, now 3 years old and has been brilliant since day one. no issues at all, I prefer the DCT to the manual , but that's my personal preference. Changing the tyres on these cars also makes a huge difference to the handling, especially in the damp or wet, I swapped to Michelin PS4S from the Michelin Pilot super sports which made a huge difference to the handling.
I had an E92 M3 prior to the M4, it was a great car but unreliable long term. The V8 is a fantatic engine, but not suited to high milages and there's the rod bearing issues they have. IMO the E92 is not a patch on the M4cp, a thrashy ride coupled with a skittish rear end over bumpy roads at speed was its main shortfall.

I bet this dude wants to buy an m4 now and regrets all the negative he spoke about it. Fabulous car. The only upside is the suspension being a bit stiff even on comfort mode. But great car everywhere else.🙌

The guy who just reviewed the v8 RS5 and says you can place it tightly or similar calling a 1600kg F82 a bus - comedian . Entitled to your opinion you are , but on this one you are wrong - I implore you to re-review - once you get comfortable in the F80/F82 it’s a razor sharp weapon …. Lively back end = character - just have the cohones to control it !
I drive a E92 m3, always envy the look of a M4.
I hope you kept the E90 generation. I had the E90 355i and I miss driving that car. Nothing else compares with how connected that generation was in the BMW line up
F80 M3 comp pack mapped is something else, E92 fan boys all it is is noise, it will destroy 10 year old supercars and still give you 30mpg. Nuff said
I really like this Jay fellow but he seems to be off on this review. The M4 I believe has better lap times and is faster to 60 than a few supercars of years past. It is like comparing my E85 Z4 to my E89. Yes, the feeling of the steering is less in the corners but the car is better than the old model in every other way. BMW makes high end luxury track cars. Now if your only goal is harsh track car then buy an Aerial Atom. 😉
I have an f80 m3 and this guy sums it up pretty well, competition pack or not, the m3 falls short of my expectations. Its good overall, but no longer legendary

Cars are so much faster than they were 20 years ago. Shame then that so many modern fast cars are lacking in the fun department. I would put the M4 CP (and most M cars) into that category.

The reason a 911 and an M4 get compared is because the M4 is the last step in the "sporty regular car" bracket for a lot of people, then they move on to a 911 which you can drive daily but there are compromises in doing so.
Most people think every Lotus is some stripped out hardcore track car. That's simply not true, you can daily it as easily as a Porsche.

I’m on my second M4 but he’s right. The steering blows and really takes away from the rest of the car which is really really good. Beautiful car, the right size, practical as the rear is HUGE for a coupe. Dangerously powerful if you’re not careful. I have a manual which really makes the car so much more fun than the auto. Drifting in the wet is just so much fun and controllable too! But the steering..
I have some questions for you if you don't mind? Clearly owning two M4s you will know the car better than 90% of the people on YT who are just driving one for a couple of days and parroting mostly what they've been told about the car.
I'm about to get a 2017 M4 Comp so I've been buried in my Internet for the last week looking for accurate info, and it seems some think the steering is really good and they don't see what YT reviewers are complaining about,. But some say "it's a bit too heavy even on the softest setting", or "it's dull and lacks tyre feedback", or "it's great everywhere except for when the steering wheel is dead centre, then the feeling suddenly goes numb", etc, etc.
It seems like nobody is actually sure what the problem is and some don't even think there is one,.. It's been (excuse the pun) driving me crazy trying to get to the truth of the matter(!)
... So if you don't mind responding,, (A)..What in your personal experience with the M4 is precisely the problem with the steering?
(B)..Has the M4 had any failures/issues I should be concerned about suddenly occurring? I've heard they can develop brake issues which are really difficult/expensive to rectify, that the crankshaft is known to break and that the drive housing can move putting the car into limp mode.
(C).. I've heard that in the DCT version the brake pedal is far too sensitive, some said even dangerously so!?
And finally (D).. What milage did you get out of your tyres before replacing them?
I hope you can offer some experienced ownership advice on the above, but I'll understand if you don't.

Every time I see one It's always the same thing: It's fucking massive. How can a two door car be so big? It just looks ginormous in person, M2 all day long. If you look at what they are asking M2 to M4 I just can't understand why anyone would buy one. M3 fair enough but M4 I am just baffled by. As an aside why in gods name are they not selling an M3 touring, I don't understand the reluctance, Mercedes and Audi are quite happy to take that money, an M3 estate would move units.

Glad you enjoyed the competition pack more than the normal M4.
But still has the concerns I have if I ever decided to move from my M235i (if you ever want to have a go in it you are welcome to) to one of the many versions of M4, it's sheer size on country roads.
Me personally I think the sweet spot in the M range maybe the new M2 CS incoming with it rumoured to have the M4 engine and a lightened car but with 4 seats intact.

The M235i was a great car (had one before the M2) perfect stealthy daily. Mine just depreciated so fast though haha that's my only issue with them.
Tom90Y i had an M235i. Just about a month ago I sold it and got an M4 competition. Best decision ive made.

I dont think camaro is made in right hand drive. Even those sold in the uk. I also wouldn't trust a USA review of a USA made car personally. Without looking at other reviews made outside of the USA.
Hi.... Just watched your review and rather surprised at some of your comments...Harman Kardon hi fi???.... Think you must either have wax in your ears or haven't figured out how to set the hi fi up properly???... It is simply one of the BEST hi fi's in any car I have ever owned... that includes BMW,s Merc,s various Lotus, Porsche with BOSE, Audis with Bang and Olufsen Ferrari and Lamborghini (Bose) etc etc etc.... hi fi in M4 Comp pack is far and away better than any of them... so I am sorry but you don't really know what you are talking about. Or maybe just plain deaf!
And "proper" Sports car???... Its not supposed to be a "sports" car like a Lotus which will break down all the time, Porsche...? Only decent "sports" car they made was the old 6 cyl Cayman GTS.. now they have lost the plot. I owned an original 911 Carrera that people reckon now is worth stupid money... it was the biggest pile of crap I ever owned... couldn't keep the car cool in summer time, heater wouldn't work in winter time, vague steering, downright scary in the wet, questionable build quality and cost a bloody fortune to keep it on the road.
On a personal level I don't like your shirt but its all down to personal preferences…. I certainly would be far happier driving down to the South of France in an M4 Comp pack in comfort and with decent sized boot to carry my luggage than squashed up in a Porsche with everyone thinking I,m a cock for driving a Porsche.
Sticks I the craw somewhat when people review cars they don't own or can't afford and then rip them apart with negative comments. Cannot understand your bias against M4 comp pack.... it is a simply great GRAND TOURER that goes like stink in total comfort and reliability, handles sublimely, reasonably economically, looks and sounds great ( and if you don't like the exhaust sound or piped in engine sound you can turn them OFF.)

Couple of points Roger, the BMW has always been thr sportiest of all the super saloons/coupes - but yes it is not a sports car.
This one has not been particularly reliable, and the exhaust on it sounds hideous basically all the time.
Oh, and I could afford one. I nearly bought one a couple of years ago. That has nothing to do with anything.

I just don't understand how you could say that it isn't very good, it's a bizarrely inaccurate assessment. Are you sure there wasn't something amiss when you listened to it? I'm not being defensive or trying to provoke argument, I'm actually genuinely interested in why you came to that conclusion. What did you think were its failings, what specifically made it unsatisfactory?
A lack of midrange clarity from memory, my father's 440i is similarly underwhelming. Doesn't feel miles better than the totally standard system in my E92.
Oddly, the best sound system i have heard in any car WAS in a BMW with HK - my Logic 7 equipped 645
iv got new m3 comp pack on order" 70k list car for 62.700" 15 plate evora 400"s are fetching 60-65k on auto trader" And its never going to be a out and out sports car like lotus/Porsche" but you cannot get your fishing tackle in a Porsche/lotus lolAnd if you go onto bmw forums like cutters" people who have gone from a m4/m3 to Porsche 997/991 always say they miss the out and out low down torq of the bmw! something Porsche and lotus are not great at"

Why compare this to a lotus or a 911 when it isn't either. I switched off half way through because I got bored of the comparisons.
One thing to comment from someone looking at an F80 M3 as a next car is how terrible that Mperformance exhaust sounds. I intend to Bootmod3 mine straight away to turn off burbled and the cold start noise.

Non of the modern cars have what you call “a feel in the steering wheel” they are all electric maybe with very few exceptions. So stop complain!!!! Second thing is and old E92 which has an issue with rod bearings and throttle actuators and 12 mpg is really a good choice for a daily driver 🤣😂 this review is total shit 🤣and btw check out video carwow where e92 just gets destroyed but f82.
I own an F82 and it’s a perfect all rounder as a daily driver show me who daily drives the old M3 specially which current petrol prices 🤣😂

The e92 design was just perfect. This is not bad but not better than the e92 for me.
Have you driven one? If you haven't then I'd recomend you do, the cp is fantastic. I've driven the V8's and they didn't feel any quicker than my Z4M. These cars offer a new level of performance.

Far better spending your money on M140 with adaptive suspension...then get a good quality LSD & power upgrade, JD4 or such like & save a shit load money.....if you go for auto the 8 speed ZF box is a joy

LegendInThaMakin Still missing the point. Here in the uk for the roads we have (size & condition of) plus the weather ie rain ( lots in parts of uk )... The M4 is simply 2 big & it's extra power is unusable a lot of the time unless you having above normal driving skills...also here in the uk we luv are hot hatches M140 golf GTI/ R, S3 etc they sell very well....so for average uk buyer the M140 is a more usable & cost buy....the massive price difference for the extra bhp & 0.60 time do not add up here ( uk channel uk comment)

It's not an M, just some sneaky try to lure some people into paying a bit more for the fake feeling to have something worthy of an M. But the thing is this: The M has to come before the model number, not after. The 1m isn't an M car by any standards. It's something for people who slap a couple of M logos on their standard BMW and think now it's an M. Kind of pathetic, really.

He gets a M4 with the Performance Exhaust but then complains that its too looud and crackly....Well did it ever occur to you that this is exactly why people buy this exhaust? Jesus christ. Also who gets a Schnitzer upgrade and then complains it's too fast? If you are not into mods then just review the standard stock model for fucks sake.
Also, I own a E92 and will get the CP M4. Its a much better car in every single way, not even comparable. The 92 feels slow and sluggish in comparison. It's like comparing a washed out old boxer vs a much better younger one in his prime.
With regards to the exhaust, I don't mind a loud exhaust if it sounds nice. This was just loud, not nice
Tha M4 has grown far too big! It's the reason why the M2 has become so desirable and probably a future classic!
Hardly any differance in size or weight with identical track and a lot less power, not even an S designated engine. Future classic = nope, unless you wait an awful long time due to no limit on production numbers.
Man this is a pointless review. Basically Jayemm doesn’t seem to like new cars. Lotus references? Cus they have such a vast array of useable cars.......not. Most reviews seem to be negative. Bit tiresome.
There's new cars I like, just not this one. At the time this review was shot I had a Lotus Evora, which was what the channel was known for

Review is spot-on. Too big, numb steering, much too fast and removed to be exciting unless you are sliding while carrying the groceries home. Agreed it should be labeled M6.

I like the C63 (the 6.2). Had plenty nice to say about the old M3 and RS4 in that video, and I really like the 996 too. You'll see in the Cayman GT4 video I highly rate that also.

Here's the facts of the matter. BMW really does nothing well, anymore. The interiors are garbage, aside from the M2, none of them handle well or are fun to drive. BMW is getting DESTROYED by Mercedes, and for good reason.
What do you mean, the M2 interior is cheap compared with the M3/4, cheaper leather, horrid open weave carbon and hard plastic. I suggest you go look at one before commenting. Destroyed by Merc, really, I don't thnk so.

JayEmm on Cars it felt like a BMW bashfest . You start the review with the prerequisite of how you are a fan and then lead into bashing the product. It’s like you even understand that you can’t help yourself you know you are going to just bash the product and we are all supposed to just agree because at one point you used to like them. It is a bigger car than a 911 but it is also more comfortable than a 911. I have never felt the M product was trying to compete with the 911. Compare it to an AMG 63s which would be a better comparison and the M is cheaper and a better performer in every way.

Rick the comparison with the 911 is because that always seems popular, although yes they are not the same.
I do not bash all BMWs, I have owned six. Check out my M235i or M2 reviews for a different take on M cars from me
JayEmm on Cars I get those may be different but this is the one I watched and that’s exactly how it felt. I believe the M4 with the comp pkg to be a great car even though it may not be perfect or for everyone but I believe it is the best in its class which again would be comparing it to the AMG c63 or Audi rs5.
Rick P I have not driven the current C63 or RS5 so I can only judge the M4 by itself - and it did not impress. Yes the comp pack is better than the regular car but for me it is outshone in nearly every way by the M2, bar equipment and interior quality. For UK roads in particular the M4 is just not right
